New Music Review Kate Nash: My Best Friend is You Kate Nash is back with her brand new album 'My Best Friend Is You'. Now she returns with a 13-track album, which ranges from girl group hits, to grungy guitars and hazy vocals that we weren’t really expecting. Produced by Kate herself and Bernard Butler, the new album is classic Nash - but it is quite clear that she's developed her sound during her 2 years away from the limelight. Kate's album is all about growing up, taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, being a human and standing up to right the world's wrongs...and of course falling in love.

The Courteeners: Falcon when they initially arrived on the scene in 2007, The Courteeners quickly revealed that they were little more than one-trick ponies with the release of their debut LP St Jude. Now 'Falcon' is the second album from Manchester based outfit The Courteeners. The album sees the four piece build upon their sound, creating a set of impressive soaring indie anthems with Liam Fray's everyman lyrics at the forefront. The album is preceded by the single 'You Overdid It Doll'.Tacitly hailed as lad rock saviors.

Scouting For Girls: Everybody Wants To Be on TV After spending their early years as a pub band, Harrow trio Scouting for Girls sold nearly a million copies of their self titled 2008 debut. They then scrapped their first stab at a follow-up, claiming to be in pursuit of perfection and decided to re-write their second album. Re-entering the studio with producer Andy Green. 'Everybody Wants To Be On TV' sees the London based three piece perfect their brand of rock pop. Their second album will again charm fans and sell by the lorry-load with its catchy melodies and hooks.

Paul Weller: Wake up the nation Paul Weller returned on April 12 with new album 'Wake Up The Nation'. He's hailed it as "political with a small 'p'" . While it probably won't dissuade his dad rock-hating critics, '‌Nation' is effectively the sound of one of the most accomplished songwriters ever enjoying himself in the studio and striving to push his music into the least predictable places possible. After the triumphant, Brit-bagging success of 22 Dreams (his third solo number one) Wake Up The Nation album sees rock's most iconic songwriter come up trumps once more To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

Book Review -

Best Gardening Books

) into the wilderness that is your garden. It’s time to get the gloves on and head out If you’d like a bit of inspiration, here are a few of our favourite titles to give you a helping hand. Reader’s Digest Garden Basics Gardening Techniques This fantastic range of flip books are a brilliant reference for any gardener, full of basic but essential knowledge to get growing. With step-by-step guides on planting, advice on what to sow and when, and how to diagnose diseases and find solutions - this book manages to be concise as well as rich in detail. Branching into tips on designing gardens, machinery and turf-laying, the pencil illustrations and explanatory photographs make it perfect for beginners.

BBC Gardeners’ Question Time: Techniques and Tips for Gardeners The favourite voices from Radio 4’s much-loved show bring together their expert knowledge in this collection aimed at both novice and accomplished gardeners alike. From building ponds to pulling weeds, the range of topics discussed is varied, and readers will not only be delighted with the advice, but will also enjoy the lively conversation between four of Britain’s most popular gardening personalities.

On Guerrilla Gardening: A Handbook for Gardening without Boundaries Forget planting things in an allotment, this book is fundamental to the revolution of transforming wasted public space into a bountiful paradise. This is a collection which took two years to create, collaborating stories of guerrilla gardeners from around the world who, irritated by neglected pieces of land in and around cities, get out their shovels and rakes out in the dead of night in a bid to restore natural beauty to the landscape. Fascinating and eye-opening, it’s a brilliant read.

Derek Jarman's Garden by Derek Jarman Monty Don himself described this book as ‘the single most inspirational and best produced book on gardening of any kind.’ British film-maker and artist Derek Jarman found solace in his Dungeness garden and this book reflects his passion. Beautifully written chapters accompanied by stunning photography bring his garden to life it’s a must for anyone who loves nature.

Paris

Paris is also called the City of Romance. And you can also be sure to have a fantastic, romantic weekend, if you go to Paris. In the city you can eat great food, spend hours shopping and se some of Europes most amazing sights. The landmark of Paris is the Eiffel Tower. The tower was build for the World Exhibition in 1889. The plan was to tear it down afterwards, but luckily enough the decision was changed. The tower is 319 meter (1047 feet) high, and until the Empire State Building that was built in 1931, it was the highest building in the world. You must be patient, if you are planning to visit the Eiffel Tower; especially in the high season. Here the line can be very long, because the elevator has a limited capacity. Instead of waiting a couple of hours, you can also take the 1.665 stairs instead. No matter what you decide, you will be rewarded with an amazing view. If you are lucky, you can see as long as 70 kilometers (43 miles).

The Louvre Museum was made famous by Dan Brown in his book The Da Vinci Code. But the museum is more than a crime scene in a famous book. It is also the scene of one of the world's most amazing art exhibitions. Look for the Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci and the ancient Greek statue Venus from Milo. But those two pieces of art is just a very small part of a huge exhibition in the old building from 1190. You can see everything from Greek and Egyptian ancient art to modern design and fashion. So if you want to see it all, one day is not enough If you have more time, you should also visit ChampsElyses, the Notre Dame Cathedral which is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in France and in Europe. It was restored and saved from destruction by Eugène Violletle-Duc, one of France's most famous architects.

You should also try to visit Versailles. The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.(about 30 kilometers/19 miles from the centre of Paris). Disneyland is also a very popular choice among kids..You can also do some heavy shopping in Paris. You can find all the well-known luxury trademarks in the department stores. When it comes to haute couture fashion houses, Rue du Faubourg-St-Honor on the right side of the Seine is the place to go. Look for Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Pierre Cardin, Chanel, and Christian Dior.

Finish your day on one of the great restaurants with a typical French dish and a glass of red wine; or try a sunset cruise on the Seine. If you have more energy, you can party on all night in one of the many nightclubs.

Paris is also a market city. Buy great food at the Rue Mouffetard market or old books, postcards, and musical instruments or porcelain at the March de la Porte de Vanves market. For cheap souvenir, go to Rue de Rivoli.

Golf Tip of the Month

By Daryn Cochrane - The Golfing House

LONG GAME TIPS Tip One: Open Up Numerous golfers struggle to get their Fairway Woods airborne because they don’t open the clubface sufficiently. While this gives your shot plenty of roll, it will hamper your consistency and distance control. To encourage an open club face practice fanning the clubface open during the first foot or two of the backswing. This puts your hands in a good position at the top of the swing and ensures a proper wrist cock. Tip Two: Use it, don’t lose it The length, forgiveness and ball flight offered by modern Fairway Wood designs makes them a superb course management tool. If you’re faced with a small landing area or it’s imperative to find the fairway then sacrifice a little distance, take the Fairway Wood and put your ball safely in play. You can’t make par with a ball if you can’t find it! Tip Three: Gently does it A Fairway Wood’s longer shaft means there’s more time between take away and impact for something to go

THE

wrong, so don’t force it! Keep the swing rhythmical and smooth and don’t try to flick or scoop the ball off the ground – the shaft and club head will combine with the centrifugal forces created by the low CoG to take care of the trajectory and get the ball airborne. After hitting the ball maintain your finish position to enhance the balance of the swing. For any further help with your game, you can call me on (0141) 942 4048, email me at: thegolfinghouse@btconnect.com or pop into my shop at Bearsden Golf Range. Have a fabulous golfing month!

Not Just the Same old Salad

We often associate summer eating with salads and with it, the hope that summer will offer an ideal time to revamp our diets, get our 5 a day and maybe even lose some weight and feel healthier. When I, as a dietitian, mention salads to my clients, the main concern people have is that they won't be filling enough. This can put some people off. Salads can be super healthy, but there is a risk of them becoming very high calorie and high fat, without you realising it. For example, for every tablespoon of olive oil that is drizzled, another 100 calories is added. Yes, olive oil is one of the better oils to use for your heart health but, calorie wise, it is equal to butter. Dressings are often to blame when it comes to upping the calories but adding full fat cheese, croutons or mayonnaise are also culprits.

give us that extra energy we need to get out walking more? 1. Use as many different vegetables as you can to get a range of nutrients. A good tip is to make your salad colourful. By having as mix of yellows (e.g. peppers), reds (e.g. tomatoes), greens (e.g. cucumber), you are getting a range of vitamins necessary for health. By having more vegetables, you are also increasing the soluble fibre in your diet, essential to keep your cholesterol in check and your heart healthy. 2. Make sure your salad contains some carbohydrate such as handful or two of potatoes, pasta, rice or couscous. Leaving carbs out of a salad (or any meal for that matter), is often where people go wrong. Carbohydrate foods are your body's preferred energy source that also fill you up and, without them, you end up feeling weak and hungry, soon after.

So what can we do to make sure that our summer salads are healthy, fill us up, are enjoyable and To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

3. Get into the habit of adding salad to meals. By filling half your plate with salad vegetables, you increase the fibre and vitamins of the meal and reduce fat and calories.

2 tablespoons lemon juice Freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons fresh basil

5. Try these different dressings to add variety.

Mayonnaise dressing serves 3 (40 calories / serving) 1 tablespoons extra low-fat mayonnaise 1 tablespoons white wine vinegar 1 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped 1 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped 1 tablespoons olive oil freshly ground black pepper

Balsamic serves 10 (70 calories / serving) 6 tablespoons olive oil 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 pinch caster sugar Salt and pepper

by Nathalie Jones Dietitian (based in Milngavie) www.nathalie-jones.co.uk 07956 208 205

4. Keep the oil or mayonnaise in dressings to a minimum by using balsamic vinegar and then just the spray oil instead of pouring. If you do use oil, measure it out in tablespoons (capfuls are a similar volume) to avoid the risk of over-pouring.

Vinaigrette serves 6 (80 calories / serving) 1 garlic clove crushed 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese 4 tablespoons olive oil

Motoring Review

Mazda MX-5 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year…

Two seats, soft top and rear-wheel drive three ingredients that form the basis of a recipe for success. Add in a dash of affordability, a pinch of cute styling and lashings of handling prowess and you’re well on your way to a Michelin Star winning banquet of a car! When Mazda designed its MX-5 it kept things simple. The concept was to recreate a classic British sportscar of days gone by a modern interpretation of a Lotus Elan or MGB and boy did they crack it. As only the Japanese can, they took the idea we had and made it even better and buyers lapped it up. The little Mazda has been an unequivocal sales phenomenon for the firm shifting more than 860,000 units since it first arrived on our shores in 1990. Yes, the MX-5 really is nearly 20 years old. But where did the idea to create such a car come from? Well, quite unbelievably, that was all down to one humble journalist’s chat with the head of research and development for the car manufacturer back in 1976.

By James Baggott

Motor Trend magazine scribe Bob Hall was lamenting the dwindling numbers of ‘classic British sportscars’ on the roads and suggested a carmaker should try and recreate an inexpensive roadster for the masses. The conversation planted a seed in the mind of then R&D head honcho Kenichi Yamamoto. Five years later, Hall was offered a job at Mazda in a product planning role and met the same man he’d spoken to but by then Yamamoto-san had moved up in the world… to chairman of Mazda Corporation! The chief remembered their chat and tasked Hall with turning the idea into reality. Hall immediately set about putting his great plan for an affordable sportscar into place and a competition was set up between Mazda’s design houses in Tokyo and California. The Americans opted for a front engine, rearwheel drive layout in line with the British roadster roots Hall was trying to recreate. But the Japanese couldn’t decide between two drive trains: front-engined with front-wheel drive or mid-engine with rear-wheel drive. Both teams presented their plans on paper, and the mid-engine model was discounted. The second round of judging saw clay models produced and the American team emerged victorious. Their concept, dubbed ‘Duo 101’, was earmarked for production. This was back in 1984, and it would be some years before it would become the MX-5 we know and love today. Mazda commissioned a British company International Automotive Design based in Worthing, West Sussex, to build a prototype and after positive reaction from the public, top brass finally signed the car off in January 1986. Three years later it was ready to launch at the California Motor Show with the name that’s become somewhat of an icon: MX-5. The M stands for Mazda, the X came from ‘eXperimental’ and the five was the project number.

litre axed in favour of a 1.8 and a new 160bhp 2.0-litre introduced too. Only a year later, Mazda tweaked the formula again adding a retractable hard top model the Roadster Coupe. That brings us to 2009 and another MX-5. This time changes were designed to make it ‘sharper, leaner and greener’ and give the eight-strong line-up the edge to still win sales. But what really makes Mazda’s little roadster such a success is the fact the maker has stuck closely to the original concept: simplicity, fun and value all three of which go a long way when it comes to pleasing car buyers. It just seems funny, then, that it took a humble journalist to point that out to a car giant… By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

But the real key to the MX-5’s success has been just how good each model is on the road. Rear wheel drive, like all good sportscars should be, with sprightly engines that weren’t too powerful, the Mazda was a delight to pilot. It’s won thousands of fans the world over including a host of celebrity followers. Car nut Jay Leno believes it will be the car that future generations will want to collect and even Jeremy Clarkson loves the baby Mazda calling it ‘basic, honest and wonderful’. In its 19 years, there have been four generations of the MX-5 all of which have stuck to the original concept closely. The first was with us for eight years and launched in the UK in March 1990 costing £14,925. It featured a 1.6-litre 115bhp engine capable of hitting 60mph in 8.7 seconds and a 121mph top speed. Mazda UK sold 20,088 models of the MkI but worldwide more than 580,000 found homes! The MkII’s biggest difference was at the front, with the pop-up lights of the original outlawed for safety reasons replaced with fixed units. Under the skin there was plenty of reworking too and the 1.6-litre was joined by a new £15,995 1.8-litre that produced 145bhp and hit 130mph. UK sales doubled to 47,157. Seven years later in 2005 the third generation arrived and with it the MX-5 got its first complete redesign since the original. Inspired by the then recently-launched RX8 it got a gentler wedge shape and flared wheelarches. Again, under the skin, the designers got to work introducing a new chassis but the big news was the 1.6-

The Block Paving Experts.... SCOTLAND LTD

GBM (Scotland) Ltd were established in 1995 and has a solid track record of the supply and installation of monoblock driveways, paths, patios and fencing services to homes in and around the Glasgow area. GBM’s owner, Gil Meechan started working as a ground worker/labourer when he left school, better known as a tea boy at that time! Slowly he was to be shown the ropes by the experienced ground workers on building sites, quickly gaining the knowledge of excavation work, drainage and building requirements whilst working with large blue chip companies on road and motorway construction, shopping centres, offices, government buildings and residential homes. Gil tells us “It was in 1995 my older brother encouraged me to take the plunge and start up on my own. If not for his support and guidance, I might never have started the business in the first place. I had worked for a number of years on large commercial groundworks so the experience I had made it easy to transfer over to smaller domestic groundworks and use the knowledge I had built up over the years on different sites and so on. But there has been so much to learn about running my own business apart from just laying driveways!”

GBM can also offer Marshalls optional insurance-backed guarantee, which p r o v i d e s comprehensive cover on the products and labour for a full 10 years, protecting your Gil Meechan GBM Proprietor investment, whilst offering complete peace of mind. If required, they can even utilise the free Marshalls contract document, thereby preventing any disputes or misunderstandings arising. “Myself and all the staff here at GBM (Scotland) Ltd would like to thank all our customers and the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory for all the business!”

Gil continues “Reassurance and peace of mind is very important when choosing a company to carry out a project of this nature. We offer quality products installed by our own experienced skilled staff backed up by our written 10 year guarantee, has led to us being recommended time and time again by satisfied customers. Building up a good name over the 14 years has been the break through for me, the staff, and the business.” “The Bearsden & Milngavie Directory has been a great help in letting the local people find a good local company like ourselves” smiles Gil. As members of the Marshalls Register of Approved Landscape Contractors and Driveway Installers, GBM can help you create the project of your dreams with complete confidence. They work to an agreed code of practice, ensuring high quality workmanship is backed up by a commitment to client satisfaction.

RM Plumbing & Gas Services - Reliable and Local

Finding the right plumber or heating engineer is a daunting task, and on occasions has to be done under extreme time pressure, for example when the boiler is not working on a very cold day. Wondering if they will turn up at all? If they do turn up, how much are they going to charge you? and what will the quality of work be like? RM Plumbing & Gas Services have a long standing reputation for being honest, efficient, respectful and highly experienced at handling the most difficult jobs from both residential and commercial premises. Their local plumbers can carry out any job from the simplest leaking tap through to a full replacement heating system. The company was set up by director Ronnie McFarlane, who served his apprenticeship straight from school and went on to work as an engineer with Scottish Gas covering the East Dunbartonshire area. In 2001 Ronnie decided to go it alone and has built his company steadily through recommendation and reputation for quality workmanship. Due to the continued support from the local residents to use RM services, Ronnie has been able to employ two apprentices, 1st year apprentice Matthew Baillie & 4th year Kevin Gallagher who are both from the local area, during a time when many other large construction companies are unable or unwilling to start apprenticeships for young people. RM also have time served plumbers, gas engineers and an electrician currently employed.

In need of a new boiler? Ronnie and the team are boiler replacement specialists and supply high efficiency condensing boilers that are cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly than conventional boilers. They also have power flush machines that can make your old heating system like new by removing sludge from your system with no mess and no fuss to make your whole system run more smoothly. The company is also part of the new “Gas Safe Register scheme which starts on April 1st 2009, replacing the existing organisation operated by CORGI. By law, from April 2009 all gas installation companies and installers are required to join the new registration scheme and they will all be required to remain competent and registered, and will therefore will be inspected regularly. To tie in with this new register starting, Ronnie has opened a new showroom/advice centre in Auchinairn Rd, Bishopbriggs for the public, please call for more details. With RM Plumbing & Gas Services you can have peace of mind of having first class professionals working on your behalf. Osteopathy

Osteopathy originated in the United States in 1872 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still, an army doctor in the American Civil War. Disillusioned with conventional medicine, he devised a means of encouraging the body to heal itself. Today osteopathy is one of the most effective treatments for back and joint pain. Its key principles are to stimulate the body’s self-healing powers by gently manipulating the musculoskeletal system. Similar to a car, the body works best when its ‘engine’ is well tuned. The ‘engine’ is the musculoskeletal system which runs all other bodily functions.

Osteopaths use massage and manipulation in order to restore or improve mobility. This holistic therapy means that the focus is on each individual person rather than producing a generic technique for treating a specific, named condition. Lower back pain, for example, may have a different cause for each person and originate in different parts of the spine. Some headaches start from stiffness or trapped nerves in the neck so manipulation can often cure them. In addition to back pain, osteopathy is a ‘whole-body’ therapy that can also work on other parts of the body such as the digestive and circulatory systems.

31

Common conditions that respond well to treatment include repetitive strain injury (RSI), arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and sinusitis. Your first appointment will include an in depth consultation and detailed history-taking. You will also have a physical examination where the practitioner will ask you to undress down to your underwear in order to assess your spine and mobility clearly. So it’s best to wear something suitable and comfortable. It’s unlikely that your first treatment will be your only one as the cumulative effects of a number of sessions produce lasting results. However, a good osteopath will not insist on a long course of treatment without explaining precisely why this would be needed. You may also be given exercises to do at home in order to strengthen and mobilise your body in between sessions.

immediately. Once the session is over you may feel slightly sore, especially if your muscles have been tense over a long period, but this soon clears. You may also feel very tired so ensure you have time to rest afterwards. A special form of osteopathy called craniosacral therapy is an extremely gentle method suitable for babies, children, pregnant women and people in great pain. It has produced dramatic results in sleepless babies and has also helped ease colic pain. In the modern world where we have both sedentary and tense lifestyles, osteopathy is one of the best ways of freeing up your back and life by improving flexibility. It’s one of the most respected and widely used of all complementary therapies.

During a treatment session the therapist will slowly massage and stretch muscles and ligaments. Sometimes a more vigorous ‘popping’ of the spine or joints is required. Although slightly alarming the first time this happens, it doesn’t hurt and relief is felt

Relax Your Mind with Yoga

Yoga is a time old practice which originated in India some five thousand years ago. Since its origin, yoga aims to radiate peace and tranquility within the mind, body and soul. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word 'yuj' which essentially means to join or unite. Thus, yoga refers to the self uniting of an individual with cosmic consciousness or the Universal Whole. Yoga Poses (Asanas), Meditation (Dhyana) and proper breathing practice (Pranayama) are the keys to yoga. When these three entities collaborate, a yoga practitioner is guided to a journey of deep spiritual insight. Practicing yoga paves the holistic path and help you to connect yourself to the Omnipotent. With passing time, yoga has become a non-denominational concept, that is, it has become an integral part of all religions. Spiritual oneness or unity with the Supreme is the ultimate preaching of all religions and yoga as a doctrine upholds this concept of oneness. There are different kinds of yoga like Hatha Yoga, Bikrama Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and each kind of yoga are unique in their own ways but all leads to a similar spiritual goal. Our minds have a tendency to wander and ponder. We tend to worry about the future or get upset about our past. This results in stress and anxiety, which not only disrupts the mental harmony but also have a profound negative effect on our physical health. Yoga practices help us to attain a state of self actualization when the feelings of "I, me and mine" transcends into a selfless awareness of "Thy, Thee and Thine". The simple practices of asana, pranayama and dhyana leads a yoga practitioner to achieve a state of optimal physical

health and bless him a state of peace. Different kinds of yoga help a person to rise from their immediate, present state of consciousness. The individual move forward gradually to experience a state of wholeness, well being and enlightenment. When coupled with soothing music, yoga practice helps a practitioner feel more refreshed and rejuvenated. The pleasing melody of a yoga music can delve deep into the senses of the individual and draw him to extra ordinary levels of perceptions. As a result, the devotee experiences a state of harmony. The yoga asanas encourage positive thoughts of mind and meditation helps in achieving the strength of will. Breathing practice is another key part of yoga. Pranayama in yoga context, is called the science of breath control. Through the practice of Pranayama, the life force (Prana) is taken in and stored in the body. This in turn, brings great vitality and strength to the mind and body. Pranayama increases an individual's overall immunity and resistance to various diseases. As the conscious control is achieved through synchronized breathing, the mind is illuminated and an eternal spiritual power is realized. Thus, it can be derived that through Pranayama, the vital energy of the body and the mind can be controlled. This eventually benefits a practitioner by providing increased energy to the body and develop the different faculties of the brain.

Bearsden & Milngavie Directory: The Local Directory at the heart of the community

“I never knew so many businesses existed within the area.” This remark has been made time and time again in relation to the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory. Since April 2007 the Bishopbriggs Directory has gone from just an idea to firmly establishing itself as the magazine for the local area. Starting off with just 2000 copies, the directory has expanded over the 3 years to now cover 12,500 homes throughout Bearsden & Milngavie. Containing a mixture of editorials, adverts and articles, as well as local information and events, the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory regularly receives positive feedback from the residents and advertisers alike.

Truly Local Local residents like to support local businesses: local businesses need the support of local residents. The vast majority of our advertisers live, work or have connections within our distribution area. Many of these businesses don’t have a ‘shop front’ - they’re small independents who use a home office, and Bearsden & Milngaive Directory is one of the few affordable ways they can promote their business to a local audience. By using them you are truly supporting your local community. A sister directory covering Bishopbriggs Directory started in April 2006 which gives total coverage between the two directories of 25,000 homes

throughout East Dunbartonshire and surrounding areas.

Step Out of the Box… … and get noticed. Adverts are visible and never lost on a page, even if people are skim reading. There are never more than four adverts on a page and there are limited advertisers within each business category, to ensure that no-one becomes “lost” in a long list of competitors. Editorial features are available, if you want to tell readers about your business in more detail. We also offer leaflet drops along with the directory.

Shelf Life The Bearsden & Milngaive Directory has excellent shelf life, the relevance of the editorial and advertising content, as well as local information, means it is in constant use. Residents keep it as a reference point until they get the next issue, thereby giving advertisers immediate access when their services are required. This is really important because although some people may require services immediately, most will not, but will subconsciously retain the names of adverts they find eye-catching and notice often. This is why repetitive advertising usually yields the best results: it keeps your name prominent and at the forefront of peoples minds. If you think that advertising in either the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory or the Bishopbriggs Directory could benefit your company then please call either Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210.

What our advertisers say............ I have been advertising in the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory since June 2007 and find it to be the most cost effective advertising that I do. We receive excellent feed back from our advertising and will continue to advertise in this publication and would recommend it to any new or established businesses who want more from the area. William Burke, Guttermaster “Brilliant! We have seen a dramatic increase in business since advertising in the directories. They get delivered when they should and where they should, unlike some other “mags that we have used in the past. The professional image the directory delivers benefits every existing or potential customers. Noel Daly P & N Bathrooms

I have been advertising in the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory since the first issue, people often refer to the directory and the work that I get easily covers the costs of advertising. Keith Malley, Chips Away Our company, Sovereign Select Chauffeur Driven Cars, based in Kirkintilloch have been advertising in both the Bearsden & Milngavie and Bishopbriggs Directories since their creation and have found that it has g r e a t l y assisted in the steady growth of our business by its provision of quality advertising and a local showcase for our quality

Chauffeur Driven Cars. Robert McKenzie Sovereign Select Chauffeur Driven Cars I found that both the Bearsden & Milngavie and the Bishopbriggs Directory a great platform to advertise in, both Scott & Natalie helped design my advert for me and gave excellent advise. I believe the directories have definitely helped my business grow and I received nothing but positive feedback from them. Gillian Marshall, The 9 Rules

Last year we spent a large percentage of our advertising budget on well known publications such as Yellow Pages with mediocre results but in comparison, the budget spent on both the Bishopbriggs Directory and its sister publication, the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory proved invaluable - consistently producing more local enquires than any other of the larger nationwide publications. It remains our favourite way to generate valued local customers. There are many imitators of this style of local magazine advertising which have sprung up recently, but Scott and Natalie have the original formula that works with the publication and its results are underpinned with their professional creativity and good old fashioned but necessary hard work. I would look to advertise in any future publications they may create.

TV’s New Dimension Will your next TV be 3D? It’s taken nearly a century the first 3D film was shown in 1920 - but at long last 3D TV is heading for your front room. At least, it is if you believe Sky. The satellite broadcaster will launch the UK’s first dedicated 3D TV channel later this year, offering a mix of the arts, movies and sporting events. There’s no doubt that 3D is hot right now. Films such as Avatar, Up and Toy Story 3 make tremendous use of the technology, and by happy coincidence 3D films are much harder to pirate than traditional ones, which is great news for film studios. That means we’ll see stacks of 3D films in our local multiplexes this year. But will the same technology work in our homes? Sky certainly thinks so, but there are several problems to overcome. The big one is that 3D TVs still need special 3D glasses, and while they’re much more stylish than the red and green glasses you’ll remember from your youth you’ll still need to stick something on your head whenever you’re watching 3D content. That might be a problem for glasses wearers, but until lenticular 3D sets – which use twin lenses to provide 3D viewing without the specs – go on sale there isn’t an alternative option. Such sets are still several years away. The same applies to 3D gaming: while some current graphics cards can deliver 3D gaming for PC users, you’ll need 3D glasses as well as 3D-ready monitors.

3D CONTENT The second issue is content. As anyone who invested in the first HD TVs can attest, just because your TV can show something doesn’t mean anybody’s broadcasting it. We very much doubt you’ll ever see

EastEnders or Corrie in 3D, and at the time of writing there aren’t that many 3D films, let alone 3D TV programmes (once again the same applies to games: there are very, very few titles specifically designed to take advantage of 3D displays). They’ll come, of course, but early adopters will find themselves spending much more time with their TVs in 2D mode than in 3D. The exception – and it’s a big exception – is if you’re a football fan. Sky knows that football sells satellite subscriptions, and we’d expect it to invest heavily in 3D football matches from the very start of its 3D service.

PRICE The third issue is price. New technology is expensive, and while Sky+HD users won’t have to buy a new Sky box they will be expected to pay extra for the channel unless they subscribe to Sky World with Sky+HD at £58.50 per month. Sky hasn’t announced how much the 3D channel will cost otherwise, but we do know what you’ll have to pay to get a 3D TV set. The first wave o f S k y compatible 3D TVs will come m ai nl y from f o u r manufacturers: Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic. Prices will start at £2,000 to £2,500 for the TV, and depending on the model you’ll get one or two pairs of 3D glasses thrown in. Extra pairs will cost around £100 each.

So is Sky right? Is 3D the future? It’s hard to tell, because 3D is a hard sell. If you’ve already bought an HD TV and pay for an HD TV subscription, will you want to replace your TV already and sign up to yet another pay-TV channel? Will the kids keep crushing the 3D glasses at £100 a pop? Will you be willing to wear glasses over your glasses whenever you want to watch something? Will 3D ever be truly mainstream? Nobody knows which is why the smart money is saying “wait and see”. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

Owner William tells us “At Audi Technik we only use genuine parts and as a VW group specialist garage, we give all of our customers the highest quality service, regardless of whether you have an old or new vehicle”. William then goes on to say “Regular vehicle servicing is often overlooked by car owners however it is more important than most vehicle owners realise. Through keeping your service book up-to-date you will retain a better resale value when you come to sell your vehicle. But the vehicle sale is a long term benefit, until then you will also benefit from identifying potential problems before they occur, ensuring the optimum miles per gallon for your particular vehicle and you get a 'smoother, tighter' drive from your driving experience!” Did you know that servicing and maintaining your car at Audi Technik Centre does not affect your manufacturer’s warranty? Tech Treats for Father’s Day Delight Dad with our pick of the best tech presents Buying presents for your dad is never easy, but don't despair: it's still possible to find a Father's Day gift that will delight him rather than end up gathering dust or dumped in a drawer. The trick is to get something he'll actually find useful and yes, that rules out USB lava lamps and iPod socks. Instead, have a bit of a think about the things your dad likes to do. There's a very good chance there's a gadget, add-on or accessory that will be a perfect fit.

PHOTOGRAPHIC For example, if your dad's into photography there's a good chance he's already got a decent camera - but there's an equally good chance he won't have a Gorillapod. The Gorillapod replaces traditional, bulky tripods and turns almost anything - rocks, branches, even lamp-posts - into a stable shooting surface. It's a brilliant invention and, amazingly, doesn't cost a fortune: expect to pay £12.99 (from Play.com) for a compact camera model, or twice that if dad's got a heavy SLR camera. Another suggestion for snappers is a digital photo frame. Prices have plummeted, and frames that once cost over £200 can be picked up for a fraction of that. Even big-name brands are cheap: for example, Amazon.co.uk is currently offering Sony's excellent DPFE72NB model, a good quality 7-inch frame, for £42.99. If dad has shoeboxes full of printed photos it's easy to bring those old snaps into the 21st Century. You can pick up USB negative scanners to turn slides into shiny digital photos for around £50 (www.firebox.com), while dedicated scanners such as HP's ScanJet G2410 (£35.51 from Kikatek.com) cope happily with photos and documents alike. If video's more Dad's thing, the U Record Video Converter (£39.99 from Firebox.com) makes it easy to convert old tapes into digital files.

DATA STORAGE Before encouraging Dad to digitise everything, though, watch out: digital files can be massive, especially if they're video files. If Dad's computer is already short of

space, an external hard disk would be an excellent present. If you've got £67.99 to spare, you could get him a 1TB Seagate USB drive from www.play.com: that's 1 terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes, of storage space.

GADGETS

If Dad's accumulated lots of gadgets already, you can save him from the usual Spaghetti Junction of chargers and cables with the clever iDapt Universal Desktop Charger. The I3 model has sockets to charge up to three devices simultaneously, and it includes six tips that fit some of the most common gadgets on sale today including iPods and iPhones, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung phones, and anything with a Mini-or Micro-USB port - which includes Sat-Navs, Blackberries, e-Book readers and stacks of other gadgets. The I3 is £29.99 from Maplin.co.uk.

MP 3 PLAYERS While we're on the subject of MP3 players, there is a huge range of iPod docks, connectors and other goodies available, but if your Dad is a keen traveller or just a fed-up commuter then the best iPod-related gift could be the gift of silence. Sony's MDR-NC33 headphones (£69.99 from www.iheadphones.co.uk) have a clever noise cancelling circuit that gets rid of background noise such as train, bus and aeroplane engines, and unlike most modern headphones they don't have to be jammed deep into your ear canals. They do a great job of removing background noise, and they're particularly good for listening to audiobooks and acoustic music. Still stumped? Then you've got the Impossible Dad - but there's a gift for him too. iTunes gift cards are a great idea when you simply can't think of something, and they're not just for music: they can be used to download
