WELCOME We celebrated our 4th year anniversary in the last issue and continuing on from that we would like to thank all of our readers for their support and making us now firmly established within the community. Also the advertisers themselves for continuing to support this magazine as they find it one of the most cost effective ways to gain new business. We still have a lot of our advertisers who started with us back in 2007 which proves it works for them! Moving on we are now finally in Summer which means long days, holidays and sunshine (hopefully). It is also time for gardening where we have a new article on growing your own vegetables and of course festival time and a preview for The Wickerman Festival is on page 32. We hope you enjoy reading this issue and once again please mention the directory when using any of the advertisers and if you have any suggestions for subjects you would like covered please drop us a line.
Until the next issue!

MUSIC NEW RELEASES
Blondie - Panic of Girls The album will be the band’s ninth studio album following 'The Curse of Blondie', which was released in 2003. Debbie, Chris and Clem have once again united together to create the new album, produced by Jeff Saltzman (The Killers) and Kato Khandwala (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach). The new album promises to encapsulate the true character and spirit of the sound of Blondie and as always, an eclectic mix of Pop/Punk/Rock/Reggae all feature. Deborah Harry may be 65 but she has energy and a voice to put some of todays artistes to shame!
The Chemical Brothers - Hanna OST The Chemical Brothers are getting into the celebrity-composer act, which has become increasingly popular thanks to high sales of Daft Punk’s awesome soundtrack for Tron: Legacy. For the Chems they had a difficult job at hand, there’s no way that the film and their music was a perfect fit in the same way Daft Punk seemed to be for Tron: Legacy. But in many ways this is where The Chems have out shone their French counterparts, they seem to keep their own style and adapt it to the film. Some tracks are pretty, some are ominous and haunting, a few are just plain fun, but all the songs on the Hanna OST are quality electronica from one of the genre’s foremost acts. If the soundtrack is this good, I can’t wait to see the film.
Friendly Fires - Pala Friendly Fires have return with their highly anticipated second album 'Pala'. The new album is named after the island in Aldous Huxley's 1962 novel 'Island', 'Pala and is set to follow on the success of their debut album that was released in September 2008 and went on to sell over 200,000 copies in the UK, picking up a Mercury Prize nomination and two Brit Awards nominations along the way. The album also sees musical collaborations with The Harlem Gospel Choir (on 'Hurting') and Holy Ghost's Alex Frankel (who plays Clavinet on 'True Love').

Burnbank - A home from home for your pet The Burnbank Pet Hotel in Queenzieburn has recently changed hands in December 2010 and is now a family business run by Lisa McCabe and her Dad James Kerr, offering the best overnight accommodation in the area for cats and dogs. They also offer a day care service for both cats and dogs and are open all year round, which is uncommon for boarding establishments. They aim to provide the best quality service you could hope for. Lisa explains “As pet owners ourselves, we understand the anxiety which comes with leaving your feline and canine friends when you go on holiday, as after all they are part of the family! We offer comfortable surroundings and lots of cuddles and attention, therefore a typical home from home experience.” The cattery has room for 40 cats per night, all comfortably set out with beds, blankets and toys. The cattery is also well heated, therefore keeping them toasty and warm during the winter months and the dog kennels can accommodate 50 dogs per night, all with their own little room, which includes bed, blanket and chew toys. Each one is heated, therefore keeping our 4 legged friends nice and warm.
Before moving into the pet hotel, Lisa and James ran a successful dog walking business (Stardust Dog Walking), which now runs hand in hand with the pet hotel and therefore provides a full dog walking service, offering 1 hour and 2 hour walks along with the day care service. Currently, they are offering a 10% discount for multiple animals from the same household. Why not pop along and see what they can offer for your furry friends.

AT THE CINEMA LAST NIGHT
The ever-lovely Keira Knightley plays Joanna Reed, half of a New York-based British couple hitting a tricky spot seven years into their previously happy and successful marriage, during which husband Michael (Sam Worthington) has never before mentioned his beautiful colleague Laura (Mendes) until Joanna meets her one night. In perhaps a contender for the 'worst timing ever' ward, Joanna becomes instantly suspicious and challenges Michael to admit that he finds Laura attractive - right before he has to leave for a week-long business trip with her. Meanwhile, while Michael's away, Joanna runs into old flame Alex (Canet), who she's never told Michael about either, and agrees to go for a drink with him. As the story progresses, each half of the couple must challenge both who they are away from their relationship, and the temptation placed before them while apart. Cut down to basics, Last Night is a story about choices those that a couple makes in how much to reveal to each other and the ones they must make when faced with temptation, and while the plot is occasionally predictable it does force you to think about those big
relationship questions - what constitutes cheating, for example - and makes you ask yourself what you'd do in Joanna and Michael's respective situations. Although it does feel contrived in places, Last Night's strength lies in the way it makes us empathise with the characters, and this is helped along nicely by excellent performances from all four of the leads. Knightley seems both emotionally and physically fragile as Joanna, a woman with a glossy New York lifestyle but who is ultimately unfulfilled, while Worthington plays Michael to a tee as the boring, emotionally closed off husband. We could have perhaps done with a bit more depth to Mendes' character, but she does make an excellent sultry temptress and does the best with what she's given. Last Night may not make for a great date movie or one to take your significant other to - it's hardly a romance and could provoke some awkward conversations - but it's well-acted and throws forth some interesting questions about how much we should - or do - reveal to our partners

TRAVEL SHANGHAI: A CITY OF CONTRASTS
Shanghai is the second largest city in China: colourful, exotic and quickly making a name for itself as a mustvisit long haul destination. In the past it has been the domain of adventurers, swindlers, gamblers, drug runners, the idle rich, fashion dandies, tycoons, missionaries, dangerous gangsters and pimps; a dark memory during the long years of Communist isolation. Today the sun rises on a city typifying the huge disparities of modern China: monumental buildings that reach for the sky and glinting department stores that swing open their doors to a stylish elite while child beggars, prostitutes and the poor struggle to live. But travellers still love this city of contrasts, which has earned itself the accolade of the Paris of China and the Queen of the Orient.
Located at the centre of the mainland’s coastline, Shanghai has long been a major hub of communications, transportation and international exchange. The municipality covers an area of 6,341 square kilometres and has a bustling population of more than 17 million. Shanghai is China’s largest economic industrial base and a famous historical and cultural city. It is home to the most modern stock exchange in the world, to one of the most advanced subway systems and to the third tallest skyscraper, the Jin Mao Tower. Visitors to Shanghai are not only dazzled by the modern metropolis and gateway to a developing China, but are also able to immerse themselves in the unique Shanghai culture, a combination of Chinese and western elements.

Even back in the dull Communist era, Nanjing Donglu had a distinctly shop-tillyou-drop feel about it. Nowadays, high street stores such as Esprit, Benetton and McDonald’s have shouldered Marx and Mao right out of the way. A visit to the Old City is easily combined with a stop at Yuyuan Garden, a wellrestored Suzhou-style garden created during the Ming dynasty. Jade Buddha Temple, located in North West Shanghai, is the most popular Buddhist temple in this city. It is famous for two jade Buddha statues, one of which is reclining and the other seated.
Huaihai Lu Colourful festivals and celebrations litter the yearly Shanghai calendar, such as the Shanghai Nanhui Peach Blossoms Festival, Shanghai International Tea Culture Festival and Shanghai China International Art Festival.
Culture vultures can immerse themselves in the fascinating history of China to be found in the Shanghai Museum where there are 120,000 works of art. Expect to spend half, if not a whole day here. It is one of the city’s highlights.
The well-known Bund area is a must for visitors to Shanghai. Here, 52 buildings lining the narrow shoreline of the Huangpu River offer a living exhibition of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architectural styles as well as combinations of Chinese and Western looks. The area of Huaihai Lu is all about shopping, with huge department stores blotting out the sun along a road colourfully lined with flower boxes, while the area around the hotel is littered with cafes, boutiques and antique shops. Head down the side streets off Yan’an Lu for the tatty, down-at-heel fin de siècle architecture that is so evocative of yesteryear. Nearby, the Yuyuan Gardens and bazaar area of the old town offer some delicious lunchtime snacks and welcome greenery. Nanjing Donglu (Nanjing Road East) has long been China’s golden mile, although these days it’s looking a bit the worse for wear beside the luxury option of Huaihai Lu. But shoppers still love it. A late 1990s renovation project pedestrianised the street from Xizang Lu to Henan Lu, and the shopped-out can catch the tourist train that runs along its length.
Yuyuan Garden
If you have a head for heights, how about a stay at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai? It is the highest hotel in the world -– located on the 53rd to 87th floors of the Jin Mao Tower – in the heart of Pudong, Shanghai’s financial and business district, and with easy access to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shanghai World Financial Centre and the International Conference Centre.

INTERIORS 20 WAYS TO GET A FRESH LOOK FOR SUMMER Want to give your home a quick, easy and inexpensive makeover for summer? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell offers 20 inspiring solutions 1. Pop some fresh flowers in a vase. Even casual arrangements of garden flowers in a cheap vase or an old goldfish bowl will brighten up all but the most formal of rooms. 2. Light a scented candle or line up a set of multicoloured tea lights. 3. Change your cushion covers. For the most up-to-date look, choose vivid but co-ordinating colours, in a variety of quirky patterns. 4. Disguise a tired sofa or a boring bed with a pretty throw. 5. Replace dated lampshades or light fittings. So quick, easy and cheap, there’s no excuse not to. 6. While you’re at it, check that your light bulbs are the right wattage for the room - there’s nothing worse than poorly lit rooms, or ones that are so dazzling they look like a lamp shop.
10. In a girl’s room, suspending a corona over the bed, with some sheer curtains draped around, will go miles towards that fairytale room she’s always wanted. 11. Flower lights wrapped around the bedhead are a lovely touch, too. A boy might prefer camouflage netting or a giant map of the world on the wall behind the bed.
7. Use paint to transform your home from top to bottom. Floors, walls, window frames, skirtings, shelves, freestanding furniture and even kitchen and bathroom tiles can all be refreshed and revived with a lick of paint.
12. Create a fabulous display of pictures. Instead of dotting them around in an ad hoc fashion, frame them all the same and hang in orderly rows for super-duper impact.
8. Flooring sets the tone for any room, and if your carpet is looking tired, you’ll be amazed at the effect a change can have. One option is to remove the carpet entirely and renovate the boards beneath. To strip away old stains or surface coatings, hire a professional sanding machine and follow the instructions carefully, before sealing, staining, liming, waxing, bleaching or painting.
13. Look at your light switches. If yours are of the bogstandard, white plastic type, check out the alternatives stainless steel, nickel, chrome, brass, even ‘invisible’ acrylic, with a rocker, dolly or even neat little push button switch. The same goes for switch plates, TV aerial sockets, even shaver and electric toothbrush plates.
9. Adding or replacing a rug is another instant way to change the look of your floor. Think bold texture, pattern or colour.
14. Do the same for door handles, blind and light pulls, cupboard and drawer pulls, and any other knobs or handles you can find. Substituting ordinary ones with something interesting, tactile and good-looking can make a world of difference.

15. Flouncy, fussy curtains have to go. Replace with simpler versions (no pelmets, thanks). Practically every high-street store has ready-made curtains at reasonable prices. 16. New bath and basin taps will go a long way towards giving your bathroom extra pizzazz. Replacing them is a doddle for a plumber (or even a DIY dad). 17. The most ugly-duckling bathroom can be turned into a beautiful swan with the right towels. Soft, neutral colours have a timeless look, while bold patterns are of the moment. 18. The latest look for walls is to use specially designed stickers to create a graphic, funky pattern. Just peel and position for an instant new look. 19. There are some snazzy storage ottomans currently available. Not only does it add an extra seat to the room, but for an emergency cleaning, you can scoop up everything in sight and just toss it in. 20. Last but by no means least, clean your windows it really will add a sparkle to the room.

I.T Blog by Colin Fyffe - Virus Cleanup Virus cleanup jobs account for quite a lot of my work, the last few weeks in particular has seen a rise in scareware and fake alert type malware (Malicious software). These viruses are now big business and fund organised crime. If you discover that you have a virus on our computer, or better yet, before such an event. You need to download a removal tool. There are many to be had, but the easiest one to use that I recommend is the excellent, free Malwarebytes’ Anti Malware. If you Google search ‘MBAM’ it should appear top of the list. Click on the free version and download. It is around 7 Mb. If you are unfortunate enough to have a virus you may find that you are prevented from accessing internet pages. In this case, we will have to try safe mode, we were going there anyway. Restart the computer and lightly tap the F8 key after the first screen appears. This screen may show the brand of the computer. If at this point you see the windows loading graphic you have missed the point to press F8, restart and try again. You should be diverted to a list of
commands, one of which will be ‘Safe m o d e w i t h networking’, or similar depending on your operating system. Highlight using the arrow keys and press enter. Going in to safe mode it will look slightly different to normal but things should work to some degree. If you still cannot access the internet here I am sorry to say that your virus may have its teeth in too deep for this article, either that or your internet connectivity is down in safe mode. Once Malwarebytes’ is downloaded, run the installer and let it update. Update before every scan you do on the machine – third tab along. Let it run the quick scan and remove any nasties it may find. Restart and repeat the update and scan in normal windows operation. Hopefully that helped. Let me know how you get on.

MOTORS CARS TO ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT You’ve worked hard, looked after the pennies and sacrificed your preferred choice of wheels for family cars. However, things are different now: the children have flown the nest, you’ve got time on your hands and more importantly more cash, so why not treat yourself to a new set of wheels? Retirement is the perfect time to take advantage of lower insurance premiums and empty roads (everyone else is at work), but the hard part is what to choose. Here we take a look at five cars to suit five different needs…
The I’ve Got A Reputation To Uphold choice… BMW 5-Series Audi A4 Cabriolet, Our pick: 520d SE Touring, £31,830 The new 5 Series is a marked improvement on the outgoing model. It not only looks better now the design has been toned down, but the engines are even more efficient. If you’ve spent your life in the boardroom, you’ll know how good a BMW is and there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a new one now. We’d go for the Touring (estate) version, which looks stunning and has plenty of room too. Just don’t go mad on the options list!
The Grandparents Called Into Duty choice… Audi Q7 Our pick: 3.0 TDI Clean Diesel S Line, £47,290 A large part of enjoying retirement is the luxury of having time to lend a hand looking after your grandchildren. The thing is, little ones come with a lot of baggage, so you’ll need a car that can fit it all in. The Q7 is a great solution. Not only has it got acres of spaces, efficient diesel engine choices and a great specification, it’s also fabulous to drive. The I’ve Got To Have A Sportscar choice… Jaguar XKR Our pick: XKR Coupe, £77,900 You’ve worked hard for it, so why not splash the cash on something that’ll make an impression at the golf club? We’d resist the urge to buy a Porsche 911 (despite the force being strong) and instead head for a Jag dealership. The XK-R is a cracking car to look at, great to drive and sounds incredible, but above all it’s comfortable. If you really want to blow the budget, find another £6k and opt for the convertible. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk
43
The Keeping An Eye On The Pennies choice… Hyundai ix35 Our pick: 1.7 CRDI Premium, £19,345
The Chance To Relive Your Youth choice… VW Golf GTI Our pick: GTI, £25,045 The Golf GTI has been a fixture in most of our motoring lives for decades, but we’d hazard a guess that although you always wanted one, it never really fit in with your lifestyle. Well, now’s your chance. The MK6 is the latest version and even though it’s put on a few pounds since the legendary MK1 arrived it’s still very good indeed. The 2.0-litre TSI lump serves up 207bhp, which is good for 60mph in 6.9 seconds and, as it’s built by Germans, it’ll stay the course too.
If you’re looking for a car that’s good to drive, comfortable, won’t cost the earth and has a decent warranty, then the ix35 is a great option. Hyundai has really upped its game with this soft-roader in terms of build quality and feel. It looks great and the high-level driving position gives a commanding view of the road. Just beware lead times are long so get that order in well before you want to take delivery.

TECH GUIDE SMART PHONE APPS THAT TRANSFORM TRAVEL If you've ever scoured the streets of a strange city trying to find a cash machine, found yourself hopelessly lost after taking a wrong turn or wished you knew even a few words of another language, you'll know that travelling isn't always easy. Help is at hand, or rather in your pocket: with a few well chosen apps, your smartphone can be the perfect travel companion. Smartphone apps aren't just for Facebooking, Tw e e t i n g a n d playing Angry Birds: they can transform the way you travel, too. Some of them concentrate on the nuts and bolts - how to get there, whether your flight is delayed, where the British Embassy is - and others on the bigger picture, with guides to the most interesting attractions and best hotels. Some apps do both, telling you about interesting things and then using GPS and maps to guide you there. Before we get app happy, two quick warnings: remember your charger - location-based apps drain batteries very quickly - and watch out for roaming fees. Some apps need an internet connection to function, and you may incur pricey mobile data charges when you use them. On the nuts and bolts side there's Flight Times UK (iPhone), which you can use to see if your flight into or out of the UK has been delayed; Accuweather (iPhone and Android) for long-term weather forecasts; Tripadvisor (iPhone app, or via your phone's web browser) to find hotels, flights and restaurants and to browse users' reviews before you book; and a wide range of GPS applications ranging from Android's free Google Maps to the excellent (and batterykilling) TomTom Europe for
iPhone. While most travel apps are free or just a few pounds, TomTom's European apps are £42.99 for Eastern Europe, £52.99 for Western Europe and £69.99 for all of Europe. Some of the best travel apps come from the Lonely Planet stable (www.lonelyplanet.com/uk). Its iPhone and Nokia city guides tell you everything you could possibly want to know about your destination and make good use of maps, while Android users can take advantage of Compass, a city-specific augmented reality app for destinations including Paris, Seoul and London. Compass enables you to point your phone's camera at something and see relevant information, such as the best nearby sights or restaurants. Lonely Planet also provides phrasebooks for Nokia, Android and iPhone users. Compass isn't the only augmented reality app: Wikitude (for iPhone, Android and some Nokia devices) overlays information on real-world footage, so for example you can download an overlay showing you where the nearest Starbuck's is; Etips City Guides (iPhone) use augmented reality to show places of interest; and Metro AR Pro (iPhone) shows you where the nearest tube or metro stations are. Some apps can act as translators too. Google Goggles (iPhone and Android) can take a photo of a menu or sign in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish and translate it into English, while the Google Translate app (Android and iPhone) can translate written text between 57 different languages, read the results aloud in 23 languages and translate spoken words in 15 languages. And then there's Word Lens (iPhone), which can recognise text and replace it in real time - so if you point your phone at a menu, sign or billboard, you'll see the text change from Spanish to English immediately. It's one of the most extraordinary things we've ever seen, and makes us feel like we're living in the future.

GARDENING
KITCHENS FOR LIVING
VEGETABLE GROWING There is something lovely about this time of year: even on the less appealing days it rarely gets too chilly, the soil is warm and feels all the more full of potential. But there is no doubt that your vegetable growing may seem to be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas on the decline. Rather than forgetting the fun of growing your own until next year, why not add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh? If you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home grown vegetable and herbs....it’s not too late to start, but you’ll have to get your skates on. Knowing what responds best to late sowing is the key, and knowing what might be worth the risk has the potential to be the icing on the cake. That lovely warm soil is a real advantage to those somewhat tenuous sowings made right at the start of the season, but you may also have to spend more time watering your vegetables, especially when the plants are small. Sow yourself some ruby chard. These fantastically brightly coloured plants mean you can create something seriously good-looking as well as tasty. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach. Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing. Mizuna is one of my favourites. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown right through from now and into September. Good in stir fries or as a salad ingredient, Mizuna does best in a sunny site. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea-beetle away and so prevent the leaves becoming riddled with tiny holes. Spring onions make really tasty additions to salads, ploughman’s lunches and stir-fries. They grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil where you can then harvest full-sized versions in March. Carrots can be sown for many weeks of the year and some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can
still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container. If in doubt about sowing times, just check the packet. I love eating them, but hate buying those ridiculously expensive baby spinach leaves, but grow your own and you can have as many as you like for little outlay. They are perfect in salads and sandwiches....and much, much tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and in to September and in five to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like fullsized spinach leaves, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more.

Chinese cabbage is another late-season stalwart. It is one of the fastest growers I know and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October. If you enjoy miniature beetroot or baby beet as they’re often known, then buy a packet of beetroot seed and sow some of them promptly for a delicious, crop of small-sized beetroot from the autumn until Christmas. French beans are so much better when grown at home. It is hard to make them tough or tasteless. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. Kohl rabi is, admittedly, a peculiar looking vegetable as it has really tasty and crisp swollen stems, but it is perfect for adding to salads and great in stir fries too. It performs well in most areas if sown up until about the middle of this month, and just nine to ten weeks after sowing you should be able to harvest your first crop.
There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and as long as you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-and-come-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil. As conditions become cooler, cover the row with fleece. Rocket with its spicy dark green leaves makes a great ingredient for salads and because the plants grow so fast, a sowing made now will soon be producing a brilliant crop. Make successional sowings every couple of weeks. There...almost too much to eat! BOOKS BOOKS FOR ALL THE FAMILY THIS SUMMER It’s that time of year again; the kids are off school and if you’re lucky enough to have a holiday coming up, there’s no better way to while away the hours in the sunshine than with a good book. Here we’ve put together a collection of new and recent titles to keep everyone entertained over the summer season, with something for all the family. Hothouse Flower by Lucinda Riley Having suffered a huge personal tragedy, concert pianist Julia Forrester returns to the stately home where she grew up. Now undergoing renovations under a new owner, a hidden diary has been discovered which transports Julia and the reader to France and Thailand as she pieces together a love story from the distant past. Both funny and heart-breaking, there’s a real depth of emotion to this debut novel which won’t be quickly forgotten.
A Pile of Stuff at the Bottom of the Stairs by Christina Hopkins Mary Gilmour is a frustrated mum with too much to do and too little time. Life is passing her by, she’s missing out on quality time with her two young sons and as far as she can see, there’s one thing making it all twice as difficult - and she’s married to him. Compiling a spreadsheet of ‘infringe-ments’, from displaced used teabags to wet towels left on the bed, as well as a few positives to redress the balance, husband Joel unknowingly has six months to correct his score. Or else. Brilliant, funny and sharp all mums/partners to untidy spouses will love this.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett An utterly absorbing, deeply moving tale which delves into 1960s America and the story of the black maids who raised white children whilst dealing with ongoing discrimination from a prejudiced society. The author creates some truly wonderful characters in her presentation of ‘the other side to Gone with the Wind’. Inspirational, beautifully written and sincere - you won’t be able to put it down.

LE TOUR DE FRANCE 2011
Every July the Tour de France takes over the streets and towns of France, and the TV screens of the world. This legendary event has grown hugely in popularity since its inaugural run in 1903 and is now watched by an estimated two billion television viewers. The 98th Tour commences on 2nd July 2011 from Passage du Gois La Barre-de-Monts and 3,500 gruelling kilometres later, it finishes on the Champs Élysées in Paris on 24th July. In early 20th century France, anyone envisaging a near-2,500-km-long cycle race across the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didn’t stop Géo Lefèvre, a journalist with
L’Auto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. And so it was, that on 1 July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After six mammoth stages (Nantes - Paris, 471 km), only 21 “routiers”, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end. Le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside and, since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight.

The Tour originally ran around the perimeter of France. Cycling was an endurance sport and the organisers realised the sales of L’Auto magazine they would achieve by creating supermen of their competitors. Night riding was dropped after the second Tour in 1904 after there had been persistent cheating because judges could not see riders. That reduced the daily and overall distance but the emphasis remained on endurance. A succession of doping scandals in the 1960s, culminating in the death of Tom Simpson in 1967, led the Union Cycliste Internationale to limit daily and overall distances and to impose rest days. It was then impossible to follow the frontiers, and the Tour increasingly zig-zagged across the country, sometimes with unconnected days’ races linked by train, while still maintaining some sort of loop. The tour is split into stages, each stage being completed within a day. Stages can be flat, undulating or mountainous. Riders are judged by
the time each has taken throughout the race, a ranking known as the general classification. There may be time deductions for finishing well in a daily stage or being first to pass an intermediate point. It is possible to win without winning a stage, as Greg LeMond did in 1990. Riders normally start together each day, with the first over the line winning, but some days are ridden against the clock by individuals or teams. The overall winner is usually a master of the mountains and of these time trials. Probably the most famous participant in the race is American Lance Armstrong. In 1996 Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a tumour that metastasized to his brain and lungs. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was originally poor. Incredibly he went on to win the Tour de France each year from 1999 to 2005 and is the only person to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins.
