MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Lana Del Rey: Ultraviolance On January 30th, 2012 Lana Del Rey released the darkly glamorous 'Born To Die'. Her album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, at number 1 on iTunes in eighteen countries, and has sold over 2.5 million albums and 4.5 million singles worldwide to date. Ultraviolence can easily be considered the most anticipated release of the year. Lana has so far teased her fans with a hint of what's to come with the release of ‘West Coast' which has already received universal acclaim from music critics. Commenting on ‘West Coast' and Ultraviolence Lana explains "The record is finished and it's beautiful - it's so wrong and exquisite. It is absolutely gorgeous - darker than the first.

Futurology : Manic Street Preatures Futurology is the twelfth studio album by the Welsh alternative rock band. The album features contributions from Green Gartside, Nina Hoss, Cian Ciaran and Cate Le Bon. The album has tapped back into the passion, the fury and the anger which make them such a beloved institution. It is brimming with ideas and new sounds and fuelled by anger and regret and believed to be one of the most interesting albums for a long time... Futurology is dark and nasty but it's also a celebration of the sense of motion, of travel. Summing up the overall sound of the album, Nicky Wire (lyricist/Basist) concluded: "It's post. It's punk. It's disco. It's rock.”

Elbow: The Take Off And Landing Of Everything Elbow 's new album is largely inspired by Brooklyn, in New York. The group's follow-up to ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ is apparently as much about the trendiest borough in New York as it is about Manchester, the band's hometown. Garvey explained the title for the album. "It's to do with the fact that there have been so many life events. There are five members of the band – people have split up, got together, had children. It never stops, this stuff. Especially round the 40 mark... Everybody's feeling relief, with remorse, next to joy, next to loss." Accordingly, the title track was inspired by Primal Scream and Spiritualized. Can we still rely on the bearded kings of Greater Manchester to deliver in 2014? Thankfully the new tracks on this album are proof that Elbow are still providing music that's reassuringly tender and fabulous!

TRAVEL THE DECLINE OF STAYCATIONS

We might still be pinching the pennies as the failing economy struggles to revive but it seems holiday makers are fed up with economising on their holidays by staying at home and are looking to escape by jetting off abroad once again. With Spain and Greece providing popular.

on year boost in bookings of 60 per cent making it the nation's favourite destination in 2013. This was followed closely by Majorca and Costa Del Sol both of which have experienced a year on year increase of more than 90 per cent.

The past few years has seen many tighten our belts in light of the recession, but online travel agent On The Beach, says people are splashing out again to escape the economic gloom, as it has witnessed a massive increase in bookings for overseas summer holidays.

Greece has also proved a popular getaway despite a difficult couple of years for the country, hoteliers in Greece have sliced prices by an average of 15 per cent in an attempt to help drive the country's economy; this coupled with the weak Euro has led to bookings soaring by 55 per cent, making 2014 the opportune year to enjoy the white beaches and crystal waters of the Greek Islands.

Desperate to escape the depressing economic situation, many of us have turned to British holiday favourite Spain, which is still destination of choice for most holiday makers. With many of us - still on a tight budget, Spain and its neighbouring sun kissed islands are proving most popular for British holiday makers this summer as it's famous family-friendly resorts are great value for money. The most popular Spanish hot spot was the Canary Island, Tenerife which has topped the charts with a year

Those of us with a slightly bigger budget might consider a trip to the Pyramids, as holidays to Egypt have also decreased in price by an average of 20 per cent compared to 2011, in an attempt to rival the Spanish hoteliers and attract the all-important British holiday maker. This has made the popular Red Sea resorts ever more desirable, resulting in a year on year bookings increase of more than 70 per cent in 2013.

The best way to drain a wet garden. Do you have a garden or outside space that you can never use as a result of poor drainage or lack of drainage? Is the ground constantly wet and soggy underfoot, with high levels of water retention after rain? Then AQUATERRA EUROPE has a solution that will give you back your outdoor space. PASSIVE CAPILLARY DRAINAGE (PCD) was designed and developed in the USA originally for the sports turf market and as part of our ongoing development has now been adapted by AQUATERRA for the residential market in the UK. PCD can be installed without the entire affected area being excavated and upon completion the garden is ready for use straight away. A typical installation can be completed in 3-4 days, including drainage connections and turfing where appropriate. Call AQUATERRA today for more information.

GARDENING MEDITERRANEAN MAGIC If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do when making a Mediterranean corner in your garden is to choose the sunniest spot available, it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up potrings, pot-hangers and brackets with hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. If the containers are small they will need very regular watering so go for some of the more drought-tolerant plants such as geraniums, pelargoniums and sedums.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers as these add to the Mediterranean feel. If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt it may sound crazy but this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens all of which will help to give that well-loved look. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also gorgeous looking terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. All these help to give the right feel and bring about a definite warmth. Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening making it even more appealing to sit out and enjoy that glass of something continental. Add interest to a vertical surface - be it a wall with supports attached or an arch or pergola - by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look gorgeous especially when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

17

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. If you have wooden garden furniture which is past its best, paint it white or a vivid blue, and buy a brightly coloured tablecloth. Eating alfresco will instantly make you feel like you are on holiday. If you look at photos of Mediterranean scenes, you’ll notice that much of the hard landscaping is ‘shabbychic’. Rough plastering, crumbly mortar and plants growing in cracks create an authentic feel. Try growing your own oranges or lemons. It is easier than you might have thought and with our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant

well worth considering. These Mediterranean classics are now readily available in many garden centres. In warmer parts of the country and especially in citycentre gardens crops of edible olives are now becoming more common too. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic - try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Plant up beds, borders and pots for colour and don’t forget, that in the case of the herbs, your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too.

Lomond Consultants Lomond Consultants are different to the average architectural service. It was set up by Ian Georgeson more than ten years ago and combines the knowledge of technical details required for construction along with experience of the true "costs" of building projects. Ian told us “I was frustrated to hear again and again from customers requiring building works that they had specified a budget to the designer only to find the expensive 'design' could not possibly be achieved within budget. “Most of the early projects (prior to Lomond Consultants) I was involved with, were 'fixed price' and therefore I had to be accurate with design and costs. I could see there was a real need for someone to provide a more realistic design and build service and this is what Lomond Consultants specialises in." Lomond Consultants provides a 'one stop shop' offering a Design, Planning Permission and Building Control service along with an experienced building team. Hopefully Lomond Consultants will allow your new house, extension or holiday home to be completed On Budget with Good Service and 'No Surprises'.

CINEMA 22 JUMP STREET

The most ridiculous police movie since 2008's Cop Dog sees its sequel released in UK cinemas this month. Which is something of a surprise, given that the first wasn't the finest example of a badge-wielding comedy. Nevertheless, we're still keen to see what the second can do. For those who missed 21 Jump Street the synopsis was eyebrow-raisingly simple, and inspired by a TV show of the same name, aired in America and (perhaps tellingly) never shown here in Britain. Two officers, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum), are deemed young-looking enough to go undercover in a high school, with the mission of sniffing out whoever is supplying drugs to students. Along the way they fell for

girls, partied with minors, and managed to make us laugh out loud at least a couple of times, albeit this is no Dragnet or Naked Gun (not that we needed to point that out). Part two of this short saga, 22 Jump Street follows a startlingly similar story to its predecessor. This time round the returning professional partners have gone up in the world, switching their undercover HQ from 21 Jump Street to 22 Jump Street, across the road (their disused Korean church apparently having been bought back by the old owners), and are now being deployed at a college, with more instructions to track down the most prominent purveyors of a narcotic that has found its way to the top of the academic wish list.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

25

Again we're treated to the ever-amusing Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman from TV's Parks and Recreation and coming-of-age indie comedy The Kings of Summer), who hilariously explains to his cumbersome and boobish recruits that they 'got lucky' because nobody cared about the first ' Jump Street ', but s o m e h o w t h e 'department' (a metaphor for the film studio) has deemed it worthy of investing 'a lot of money' into ensuring the idea doesn't disappear. In the inaugural outing, the same character slated the fundamental concept of re-hashing a forgotten and underwhelming cop series, one of the strongest jokes therein.

Ice Cube is back too, as Captain Dickson, filling the unforgiving and foulmouthed police chief role. And he does it well, clearly learning from his previous appearance, and benefitting from the kind of lines that can't help but make you snigger. On the whole then, 22 Jump Street isn't very original, but that's part of the real gag, and when a film boasts one of today's finest funnymen in the cast (Hill), you know it's probably not going to stray too far off the desired mark. Hardly essential viewing on the big screen then; nevertheless there are far worse ways to spend your money.

INTERIORS DOUBLE UP YOUR SPACE When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish.

No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way. folding chairs in wenge

Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

29

The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future. By Catherine Sorell Create a home office from the tiniest amount of spare wall space with a wall-mounted, foldaway table that also incorporates 10cm deep storage compartments. Ideal in a kitchen, under the stairs, in a child's bedroom or in an office. Calligaris Spacebox, £281, Lime Modern Living, as above.

For hassle free letting ... If you’d thought about becoming a landlord but dismissed the idea because of concerns over trouble with tenants or months without rent, then think again. Northwood Lettings’ branch on Milngavie Road, Glasgow may hold the key. They guarantee that, as a landlord, you’ll receive a fixed monthly payment regardless of whether the property is let or not. Northwood’s experienced staff take over all aspects of the tenancy for a minimum 12-month contract period. They key difference between this stress-free set up and more traditional approaches is that there is a contract between you, the property owner, and Northwood effectively making them the tenant. This straightforward system is becoming hugely popular as landlords can relax in the knowledge that the income is dependable and there are no unexpected costs. There’s also no need to worry about inconvenient calls

over broken boilers and the like, Northwood deals with all of that. It’s easy to look for a downside in all of this....perhaps the condition of the property after rental. However, there are no concerns here either as Northwood selects tenants who will treat the property with respect. In the unlikely event of needing to take legal action against a tenant, Northwood will also cover the cost - and make all the necessary arrangements. Of course, this Guaranteed Rent option is only one of many levels of service offered by Northwood. Among others, they also offer a Fully Managed Landlord Service and a Rent Collection Landlord Service. For further information, or to talk to the team about properties they are looking for, contact them on 0141 942 2200.

BEAUTY PERFECT NAILS You might spend a lot of time and money buying-up and trying-out the latest skincare, hair care and cosmetic products, but do you pay as much attention to your nails? It’s certainly easy to overlook your hands and nails, but you really shouldn’t, because they’re often as noticeable to new people as your face; after all, a handshake is the first introduction. Un-manicured nails can really let the side down, especially when you’re otherwise wellgroomed and neatly presented. But there’s no denying that it’s hard to keep your nails in tiptop condition. Washing-up, cleaning, cooking, and all those other unavoidable daily chores pose a threat to nails, not to mention cold weather, regular hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers. Even so, it’s worth establishing a hand and nail care routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken an in-depth look at three of the most recent - and popular nail services. CND Shellac Nails Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudge-proof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon

your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. In fact, Shellac often stays looking so good that it only really needs to be removed when an obvious gap has emerged due to natural nail growth. It also offers the benefit of protecting your nails against breakage meaning you can keep the length much longer than you might usually be able to. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option - even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again. Shellac isn’t suitable for everyone though; if your nails are weak, brittle or splitting opting for a set of Shellac nails - or any artificial nail enhancement - isn’t the best option. Nails and nail beds need to be healthy before application. Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you. Bringing fashion to your fingertips, Minx have been a favourite with celebrities everywhere since stepping into the spotlight a few years ago. Offering a vast choice of designs in showstopping colours, patterns and prints, there’s no chance you’ll ever get bored when you choose a set of Minx nails.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

37

Minx work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated - that’s why nails and Minx are heated before application begins. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. Whilst still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, it means they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days. Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off. Long Lasting Nail Polish You might wonder why anyone would still have traditional nail polish when Shellac and Minx last so much longer. There are several reasons. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks.

It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option and the choice of colours is much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux), so whilst it won’t be as instantly ‘set’ as Shellac or Minx, your finger and toenails will be complete dry and hard within a couple of hours.

MOTORS THE STARS OF NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW The New York Motor Show might not be the biggest event on the automotive calendar, but there were some still some treats in store for car fans in the Big Apple. Land Rover Discovery Concept It was launched on an aircraft carrier, next to a spaceship, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, anyone would think the new Discovery was a big deal for Land Rover. Of course, we jest, it’s a massive deal. This debut is not just a new model, but a new “family” for the manufacturer. It’s packed with tech, like a “seethrough” bonnet - augmented reality that can project sat nav directions and camera feeds on the smart glass windscreen - gesture controls that open doors without the need to touch them and the ability to remotely drive the car using a tablet or smart phone. How much of this James Bond Q branch-style tech will make it into production is unclear, but the firm’s big wigs promised us cash is being invested in all of it.

577bhp under the bonnet, the monster S63 AMG Coupe can hit 60mph in just 3.9 seconds and shave precious seconds off the dash to the office. It has a 5.5-litre turbocharged V8 engine that produces 40bhp more than the CL63 AMG it replaces and an interior that’ll please those used to five star hotels and private jets. Air suspension, an imaginatively-titled Magic Body Control system and other technological trickery helps keep caramel lattes from spilling on Saville Row suits. The S63 will go on sale in November and cost a finance director-bothering £100,000. BMW M4 Convertible Convertible? Cabriolet? We’re not sure which term the Germans prefer and frankly don’t care, all we know is the BMW M4 looks absolutely stunning with its roof chopped off. The M4 features a clever three-piece folding metal roof and some not-so-subtle design tweaks to mark it out from lesser drop-tops in the range. These include quad tailpipes, larger front bumper and a tweaked kidney grille.

Exciting stuff. Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe The world’s chief executives are sure to make their next meeting on time thanks to this luxury missile. With

The convertible will go on sale in September costing £60,730 and boasts a 3.0-litre turbocharged six cylinder with 425bhp. The new car is 60kg lighter than the old drop-top M3 and this has helped top nearly a second off the 0-60mph time, now down to 4.6 seconds.

Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary It wouldn’t be an American motor show without some muscle, and thankfully Ford has been taking its protein shakes and come up with this. It’s the 50th anniversary Mustang revealed by Bill Ford himself. The night before the show, Ford chopped one up and rebuilt it, cut-and-shut style, on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, recreating a stunt they pulled off with the original back in 1954. It’s available in a not-too-confusing blue or white colour choice, has a retro four speed auto box and chrome detailing that also gives a hat-tip to its heritage. Under the “hood” is a 5.0-litre V8 producing 414bhp. Kia Sedona Finally, Kia’s not-so-pretty Sedona MPV has been given the same plastic-surgery treatment as the rest of the range. The new model might still be a little bit vanlike, but with the trademark Kia tiger nose and smart headlights, it looks a lot more stylish and it needed it. The MPV has seating for eight as well as some clever internal trickery that can fold seats away and remove them. BMW X4 There were a number of models that didn’t make our top cars of the show cut, and this X4 very nearly was o n e o f them. Let’s face it, the crossover fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down but thankfully there are many people out there that love an ugly duckling, and BMW will be hoping they’re willing to buy one of these. The maker has from here. Apparently 240,000 people bought the equally visually-challenged X6, so there’s certainly a market for it. Borrowing engines from the X3, the X4 will go on sale priced from £35,590 that’s a lot of money for a car only a mother could love. So why’s it included here? Well, we like manufacturers being brave and revealing this with a straight face was certainly that... by James Baggott, Managing Director of Blackballmedia.co.uk

HEALTH HAVE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY You’ve booked the perfect holiday in the ideal destination. In your dreams you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing with a good book - but it could turn into a nightmare unless you ensure you’ve got your holiday health covered beforehand. Holidaying in the UK If you’re holidaying in the UK, it’s easier; food, drink, transport and healthcare are all familiar and there’s no language barrier. You should still arrange travel insurance though, in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled or cut short. If you’re planning to go way off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast first. Wear appropriate footwear and ensure you take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing and a first aid kit. Take a map too and make sure everyone knows the route (if only one person does, what happens if they’re injured and lose consciousness, or can’t walk?). Plan walks realistically as you’ll be slower over rough terrain. These things sound simple but many deaths are caused every year by ignoring these precautions. If you’re going to a beach that’s out of the way, check it’s safe for swimming. Concealed rocks and debris can be dangerous and the UK coast harbours creatures that can deliver a nasty sting. Holidaying Abroad Read your guidebook and information from your travel company well in advance and visit www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before departure for specific precautions for your destination. Air travel healthy and safety Newborn babies and women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks if it’s a multiple pregnancy) can’t travel by air, and it’s also not advised if you’ve had a recent stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma, or if you have a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting your ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system. Insurance can become void if you ignore advice about pre-existing conditions or conceal them, so check with

your doctor. Inside aeroplanes the air is very dry. Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol, as this will dehydrate you and altitude increases its effects. Ask your doctor’s advice if you are concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or if you’ve given birth in the last two months. The risk of DVT can be reduced by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated. Compression stockings may also help if fitted and worn correctly. Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress. Food and water safety Always wash your hands before and after using the toilet or handling food, and pack sanitiser gel or wipes in case hand-washing facilities are unclean or nonexistent. If you’re not sure the water is safe, don’t drink it or use it for brushing teeth unless it’s boiled or treated with purification tablets, otherwise stick to bottled water and avoid ice cubes too. Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food where you can (especially if buying from street vendors), and avoid salads, shellfish and ice-cream (unless it’s from a large commercial manufacturer). Thoroughly clean or peel fruit and vegetables.

Health precautions Depending on where you’re going, there may be a risk of malaria and it shouldn’t be taken lightly; it can be fatal. Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and your clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through it. Wear long trousers or long-sleeved tops, particularly after dark. Anti-malarial tablets need to be started before you go and must be continued (sometimes for up to 4 weeks) when you return. Pack a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed. Vaccinations Again, requirements depend on destination; check www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel to find specific guidelines for the country you’re visiting as some vaccines are given in several doses, and factor in other countries you may plan to visit on holiday. Carry proof of vaccinations - some countries will require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and

Sick and tired of feeling Sick and tired? How Juice Plus+ Works  Takes away hunger  Gives you energy all day  Increase your metabolism  Improves general health  Helps maintain results  Control fat & weight

DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should all be free, but you’ll have to pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B (unless it’s given as a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine). Rules about prescribed medication Always take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter too, including your personal details, travel dates and details of medication you’re carrying. Your healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country that’s part of the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card which entitles you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care is usually dependent upon your insurance. Sun Protection Most people still aren’t careful enough about this. In hot sunny climates wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly.

TECH GUIDE HAPPY SNAPPING

How to get the best from your phone photos and videos Think of the last time you took a photograph or recorded a video. What did you use? For most of us, the answer will be “my phone”: in a very short space of time phone cameras have replaced traditional cameras for most people’s everyday shooting. However, not everyone is getting the most from their phone’s camera - a few apps and accessories can make an enormous difference. One of the most common problems with smartphone clips is the washed-out effect you get when you use the flash. While some recent smartphones use LED flashes to try and address this, it’s better if you just turn the flash off altogether: apps such as Google Camera, Apple’s iPhoto and Camera+ enable you to change the exposure, which affects how much light the camera lets in: the longer the exposure, the better the low-light performance. Another problem that affects many photos and videos is camera shake. While many phones attempt to compensate for this they can’t get rid of it completely, so if you’re finding blur is a problem it’s a good idea to invest in a phone tripod such as Joby’s GripTight (around £20), which can grip to almost anything and ensure shake-free shooting. If you fancy getting creative with your camera there are lots of options to choose from, from cheap and cheerful wide-angle lenses to Sony’s truly impressive QX10 Lens. It isn’t cheap - the RRP is £179 - but it adds a wireless, 18 megapixel lens with 10X optical zoom to deliver photographs you simply won’t believe came from a smartphone.

Another way to get creative is to use specialist apps. The aforementioned Camera+ and iPhoto enable you to apply filters that make your images look ancient, while 8mm does the same for video by applying vintage camera filters ranging from Super 8-style footage to what looks like an early black and white movie. iStopMotion makes it easy to create Wallace and Gromit-style stop motion videos, while Filmic Pro offers a range of professional video features that turn an iPhone into a powerful high definition video camera. There’s one big problem with smartphone shooting, though, and that’s the smartphone itself: the screen is too small and the speakers too quiet for you to spot audio and video issues that are really obvious on a big TV. For best results it’s always a good idea to edit your images and video on your computer, and there are several ways to transfer it: via the USB cable that came with your device, or by taking out the memory card (if your phone uses one) and popping it into a card reader. Many recent PCs have memory card slots that take the industry standard SD/SDHC memory cards, but if you don’t have one or you want the option to use multiple memory card formats it’s worth investing £10 or so in a memory card reader that plugs into a spare USB socket. There’s no shortage of software for editing images on PCs and Macs: both Mac OS X and Windows have decent built-in image editors, while the free paint.net (on PC) and The GIMP (PC and Mac) deliver professional image editing for free. You can get decent video editing for free too: Lightworks on PC is great, as is Apple’s own iMovie. Both programs make it easy to clean up and edit your clips.

1kg fresh mussels 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100ml white wine 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube 200ml crème fraiche 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve

First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside. Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed. Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread. For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

BOOKS TIME

They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them is going to be praying that isn’t the case. Whether you’re spending the summer behind a desk or in a deckchair, these timely titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass you by, almost in an instant. A Tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end. This is a remarkable story linking three women across time and continents. The Time Traveler’s Wife - Audrey Niffenegger Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twenty-three and he was thirty-one. Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, his ‘clock’ continually resetting, meaning Claire has no idea where or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life; raising their child and holding onto the fact that they found each other at all. It’s a fantastic and heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again.

A Time to Kill - John Grisham A ten year old black girl is viciously attacked and assaulted by two drunken white men one night. The town of Clanton, Mississippi is thrown into total chaos by the act of violence and the girl’s father, Carl Lee Hailey, asks a white attorney Jake Brigance for legal advice, wanting to know if he could be acquitted if he kills the two men. Brigance implores Hailey not to do anything stupid, but adds that if it were his daughter…Hailey avenges Tonya’s attack and kills both men leaving Brigance fighting to save both his client and his own skin. This is a legal thriller at its best, firmly cementing Grisham as the king of the courtroom drama. The Time Machine - H.G. Wells Long before Doctor Who started fighting Daleks and regenerating, H.G. Wells gave the world his view of the future, through the eyes of a Victorian scientist. The Time Traveller (we never learn his real name) invents a time machine that sends him to the year 802,701AD and discovers a peaceful people called the Eloi. But these descendants of man live lives of unspoken terror. When he scratches beneath the surface of this apparent utopia, our time traveller discovers another race: Morlocks. These terrifying tunnel-dwellers are not to be messed with and the time traveller must escape post-haste…if only he can relocate his missing time machine.

What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.
