Monkey Music and Your Baby Monkey Music’s award winning pre-school music classes introduce babies and young children to music in a way they can easily understand and enjoy – and it’s brilliant fun for both children and adults! The specialist teachers who are carefully chosen for their natural ability to communicate with and entertain young children, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Classes are carefully structured to encourage progressive learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age. There are many benefits of introducing music to very young children, particularly when teaching within a group. Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can really help develop a whole range of educational skills. Language and numerical skills flourish through action songs and rhymes; fine motor

skills are refined through playing hand held percussion instruments, while an awareness of space and one another is developed through movement. It’s amazing to watch each child’s confidence and self-esteem grow, as their involvement in the group increases! This term, due to popular demand, new classes are starting on Wednesday afternoons in Woodhill Evangelical Church, Bishopbriggs and on Thursday mornings in Lenzie Union Church. MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Royal Blood - Royal Blood Two years ago Royal Blood didn’t exist. Now with one EP barely in the bag, they’ve almost single-handedly brought riff-rock back to the ears of the modern hipster. After their BBC Sound of 2014 nomination and the recent NME Awards tour, Royal Blood’s rise continues with release of the new single Come On Over. The track was Radio 1’s Hottest Record and the duo made their first ever appearance on Later with Jools Holland in April. Encapsulating their ferocious, bluesy bass and drums groove, Come On Over blisters with an immediate intensity that matches their recent breakthrough singles Out of the Black and Little Monster. Their sound is undeniably powerful, stretching between the kind of stadium shaking alt-rock and the big surprise is that it’s all done with just a bass and a set of drums...

Twin Atlantic - Great Divide Glasgow Rock band Twin Atlantic have just released their new album, ‘Great Divide’.The lead single from the new album, ‘Heart and Soul’, was dubbed the ’Hottest Track in the World’ by Zane Lowe from Radio 1 back in March. It has since dominated Radio 1 and even if you don’t know Twin Atlantic you definitely will have heard this song by now! The new album is just as great as their previous material – 2009’s mini album Vivarium though more varied in song style. The album starts with the melodic track ‘The Ones That I Love’, full of soulful vocals and sorrowful lyrics. It then leaps into action with the heavier (and catchier) first single ‘Heart and Soul’, which we all know and love. The rest of ‘Great Divide’ is full of a mix of songs which all have the same Twin Atlantic spirit but show a full range of diversity which proves how truly talented these boys from Glasgow really are.

Pixie Lott: Pixie Lott Pixie Lott has released a self-titled collection of tracks that take their cues from the singer's early musical influences and is her most personal record to date. After two albums (2009's million selling, triple Platinum Turn It Up and 2011's Young Foolish Happy that spawned the number 1 smash All About Tonight) and a clutch of hit singles including three number 1’s, Pixie Lott has become a household name. With her new collection, gone are the LA-based sessions of her previous albums where the singer would meet with a succession of songwriters before nailing down her best work. This time, encouraged by her writing team, she was able to pour her own experiences and emotions into the lyrical sketches to deliver an album big on soul-heavy ballads and break-up anthems. “Pixie Lott is the album that represents me the most. It's the album that I've always wanted to make. Now I can't wait for people to hear it."

TRAVEL THE GRAND CANYON

Most people visiting Sin City find so much to see and do on the Strip that they never go anywhere else. That's a mistake that you'll want to avoid. No trip to Las Vegas would be complete without paying a visit to the magnificent Grand Canyon. I guarantee you'll be thrilled if you add the canyon to your list of things to see. Options Although there are other ways to see the National Park, the best choices are tours by bus, airplane or helicopter. Most people choose one of these three types of Las Vegas Grand Canyon tours based on their time and budget. If you can spend all day going to the canyon, then choose a scenic bus tour, but if your time is limited, choose a quick helicopter or plane tour. Going by helicopter is the most expensive while going by bus is the most affordable. While bus tours are great for people on tight budgets,

they are also ideal for people who don't want to fly. Bus tours go to the West Rim and the South Rim. The South Rim is farther away and takes 5 hours to get to but the West Rim is only about 2 hours away. Both of them are over twelve hours long from start to finish. Since they last so long, you don't want to make dinner reservations for the same evening. Chopper tours of the Grand Canyon are probably the most exciting and provide you with a thrilling adventure. Direct chopper flights from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West (the West Rim of the canyon) are scheduled on a daily basis. If you want to take a chopper tour of the South Rim, you won't be able to fly there directly from Las Vegas since it is so far, instead you can book a combo tour that takes you from Vegas to the canyon by bus or plane. I recommend opting for the plane. It takes 5 hours to get to the South Rim by bus, but only 45 minutes to get there by plane.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

15

Helicopters You can choose a landing copter tour or an air-only flight. Landing tours land on top of the canyon, except at the West Rim where they can descend to the floor below. You can also upgrade and add fun activities like a visit to the glass Skywalk and a boat ride down the Colorado River. Landing tours are certainly the most exciting way to see the canyon if you have the time and money to spend. They provide a more fulfilling, comprehensive canyon experience. If that's not an option, air-only tours will give you panoramic, birds-eye views of the National Park. Air-only and landing versions of airplane tours are also available. Airplanes are the quickest way to travel to the West Rim, bar none. The airplanes usually hold about nineteen people so they are large and comfortable and are made for sightseeing. They are built so the wings attach on top and don't obstruct views below the plane, plus the windows are much larger than they are in traditional planes. If you are going to see the canyon with a group of people, going by plane is probably the best choice. Choppers only seat six, but your entire group could fly on the same plane and it wouldn't be anywhere near as expensive. Normally you'll be able to book everyone into an airplane tour even if you'll be traveling during tourist season.

GARDENING CREDIT CRUNCH Now you may have made your mind up to cut back on or even cut out some of those money consuming hobbies or pastimes, and you may well be looking for ways to make your whole lifestyle that bit less expensive. But before you even start to consider giving the garden a miss, checkout my top tips for Credit-Crunch Gardening. –Apply for an allotment. In some areas you may have to join a waiting list, in others you might be able to get started straight away. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. –Save seed from favourite garden flowers and vegetables. If there are some runner-beans that have turned to cricket-bats, or your pretty summer border plants have gone over, rather than just confining them to the bin, save the seed. Collect it when it hasn't been raining, allow it to dry completely away from artificial heat, then store in old envelopes, labelled clearly. –Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don't feel embarrassed to ask, friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. –Leafmould is free soil improver. Choose softish, deciduous leaves for the best leafmould, avoid leathery and tough leaves or those with very chunky mid-veins as they won't rot down so well. Just make a 'cage' from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners, puncture a few holes and you'll make great leafmould.

jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else. –Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil. They'll trap the wasps at virtually no cost. –Many local councils offer really good value composters and compost bins so give them a call and see what they have on offer. Better still, if you're at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards. –Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds - some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. Hardy annual flower seed is best sown either in the autumn or in spring. –Make your own plant supports. Tree and shrub and even large hedge prunings can be really useful as 'peasticks' to support not only garden peas, but also many herbaceous perennials which otherwise do tend to flop over if left to their own devices.

use stale beer as slug bait. Use an old plastic – You can6620 T: 0141 952 beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is

about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. You'll be amazed at how many you catch. – Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and so are many of the weeds such as dandelion. Blanch them first to reduce the bitterness and they make a good addition to a salad. And don't forget the old favourites such as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into the breakfast delight, bramble jelly. –Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, help the planet and save yourself some money by using these as miniature seed trays. Some already have holes in the base for drainage, other may need you to make the holes.....and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid to help to keep the compost moist and allow the seedlings that bit of extra warmth. – Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. Right now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and sowing seed.

–Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they'll last years longer. –Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you 'posh' fruit....for just pennies. –The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it's what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible.

The best way to drain a wet garden. Do you have a garden or outside space that you can never use as a result of poor drainage or lack of drainage? Is the ground constantly wet and soggy underfoot, with high levels of water retention after rain? Then AQUATERRA EUROPE has a solution that will give you back your outdoor space. PASSIVE CAPILLARY DRAINAGE (PCD) was designed and developed in the USA originally for the sports turf market and as part of our ongoing development has now been adapted by AQUATERRA for the residential market in the UK. PCD can be installed without the entire affected area being excavated and upon completion the garden is ready for use straight away. A typical installation can be completed in 3-4 days, including drainage connections and turfing where appropriate. Call AQUATERRA today for more information.

CINEMA THE INBETWEENERS 2

The boys are back on the big screen and this time it’s Down Under, as Channel 4's most socially inept young men get their chance to make amends for what was, on the whole, a disappointing first filmic outing. Fingers crossed for more success this time round then. In some ways, it's rather fitting that The Inbetweeners Movie fell short of the high benchmark set by the TV series. Jay, Simon, Will and Neil have never really excelled at anything - useless with girls, not particularly athletic and, while in the schoolyard setting of those original episodes, hardly a favourite with their teachers. As such, was anyone really expecting them to strike movie-making gold with a trip to one of Europe's booziest and sleaziest resorts? Probably not. Time for round two then, and in many ways it looks set to be a case of business as usual. The four chums are

now three, with wannabe ladies' man (and bona fide sex pest) Jay having gone on to sunnier climates. It's now the year after their A-Levels. Will, Neil and Jay's girlfriends have all broken up with them since the events of the last film, and Simon wants to break up with his girlfriend, Lucy, who he finds too clingy. Will and Simon are at university and Neil is working in a bank when Jay - the potty-mouthed member of the group is off on 'an absolutely mental gap year' in Australia - a travelling experience that's now seen as something of a birthright for many a middle class further education graduates - hats of for originality then. He e-mails the others, claiming that he runs a night club, lives in a mansion and has regular sex, convincing them to join him there for a holiday.

After persuading, (with very little effort), his three best buds to come out and join him for a few weeks. Once again, they put growing up temporarily on-hold, and embark on a backpacking holiday of a lifetime in an awful car under the South Pacific sunshine, surrounded by scantily clad girls eager to learn something about themselves before heading off to Uni, and smoke a few spliffs on the beach, it seems like the perfect situation for a quartet of red-blooded lads eager to satisfy their overactive libidos. Of course few things in life run smoothly, and given this entourage's reputation for insensitivity, foot-in-mouth moments and general self-humiliation, it doesn't take much to figure out their dreams of a pleasure-filled, stress-free trip are about to be shattered. Still, the main reason most people want to see The Inbetweeners is the humour, and The Inbetweeners 2 delivers no short supply of it. There's a regular supply of punchy lines, and embarrassing set ups along with good mix of hearty laughs and gleefully offensive humour. This is definitely an upgrade on the last movie and probably one of the better comedies of the year.

INTERIORS PLANNING FOR BUILDING WORK Thinking of getting the builders in? Forward planning is vital. Our expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy advice. Ready, Steady, Go? It may sound obvious, but do you know exactly what work needs doing to your home? Think structure first, then decoration. Are the walls and roof safe and sound? Is the house warm enough in winter? How good is your boiler - have you got hot water whenever you need it? Do your windows stick; do your stairs creak, do your gutters drip or is your plaster crumbling away? Aim to get all the boring but necessary repairs and renovations out of the way - you might want to look for tradespeople (from builders to carpenters, electricians to plumbers) in the pages of this magazine before turning your attention to paint colours, floorings and soft furnishings. Then sort out your budget, agree a programme of work and get ready to make a few cups of tea. Before Work Starts If you want your project to run as smoothly as possible, make sure you get the following issues sorted in advance: • Hours to be worked • Access to the house (especially if you won’t be living there), and security • Parking • Storage of tools and other equipment • Who is responsible for clearing the working area in

advance, and cleaning up afterwards • Use of a WC, and a sink to clean tools • Disposal of rubbish • Use of power points • Potential aggravation to neighbours (anything from loud building noise to playing a radio) Rules and Regulations Before you start any building work and especially if it’s a major change such as an extension or conversion find out whether or not you need to obtain planning permission from your local authority or speak to an architect. Go to www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission for lots of information. If you live in a listed building, green belt or a conservation area, you should be especially careful to get the necessary consents - it is a criminal offence to fail to apply for listed building consent when required, for example, so it is always worth checking with your local planning authority.

DIY SAFETY Keep safety first and foremost if you’re doing any building work yourself. Never attempt any work that you are not competent to handle and, if it involves gas or electricity, call in a professional. If necessary, take the time to do a course, read a book or at least watch relevant internet videos. Use the right tool for the job, and ensure it’s in good working order before you start. Make sure you know how to use hire tools properly. Wear appropriate clothing, keep pets and children out of the way, tie long hair back and don’t smoke on the job. Heavy lifting to be done? Get help at the appropriate time. Be especially careful when using a ladder, don’t rush or cut corners, and store tools and equipment safely. Ventilate any areas where there are fumes or a great deal of dust and, last but by no means least, keep a first aid kit handy, just in case.

You may also be surprised to find that Building Regulations cover most aspects of work to your home, from the energy efficiency of new windows to electrical installations. It is important that you comply with them, because if you don’t you could be asked to alter or remove the work. You would also have problems when you come to sell your property. Confirm with your builder that he is taking responsibility for compliance and get the necessary documentation to prove it once the work is finished. If you are doing the work yourself, talk to the building control department of your local authority. By Catherine Sorell GOING GREEN Now is the time to decide on any environmentally friendly features that could save you money (and the planet) in the long run. Some eco measures, such as ground source heat pumps and wind turbines, are best suited for new builds or top-to-toe renovations, but others - solar panels and rainwater recycling, for example - are more easily achievable. And don’t overlook the straightforward options, including fitting double or secondary glazing, installing water-saving showerheads and insulating your loft. Even tiny moves such as connecting an energy monitor or switching to energy-saving light bulbs can make a big difference. For more information, go to www.energysavingtrust.org.uk.

BEAUTY EXPLAINED: THE SCIENCE BEHIND SKIN CARE

How many times have you been completely baffled by some scientific sounding jargon when you’ve gone to buy a new anti-ageing cream? Unless you were top of the class in chemistry, you probably don’t know your AHAs from your Ceramides. So that’s why we’ve compiled our guide to the most common ingredients you’ll come across today. Once you’ve read our skincare glossary you’ll not only understand the terminology, but you’ll be able to find the best cream for your skin’s needs as well. Antioxidants serve to protect skin from those damaging free radicals to which our skin is exposed on a day-today basis. Free radicals - or oxidants - are unstable molecules which are caused by environmental factors like smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals are responsible for causing those annoying visible signs of ageing like lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E, Vitamin C and green tea are some of the most common antioxidants. Vitamin E has great moisturising properties and makes skin soft and smooth, whereas Vitamin C helps to

diminish the look of brown age spots and hyper pigmentation, green tea is a strong antioxidant and a staple ingredient in most anti-ageing products. Hyaluronic acid, when applied topically, gives the skin a fresh, smooth look and helps it to maintain moisture which is vital for youthful looking skin. It’s a naturally occurring carbohydrate in the body, but levels diminish with age, especially after you reach 40. Ceramides help in the fight for youthful looking skin thanks to their ability to prevent water loss and promote skin-cell renewal. They’re commonly used in moisturisers as they effectively re-hydrate dry skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring acids, commonly found in citrus fruits (citric acid), dairy products (lactic acid) and sugar (glycolic acid). They work to aid the skin’s natural exfoliation process by loosening dead surface cells. When applied in the form of cream to your face, AHAs reduce fine lines and unclog pores.

Glycolics work similarly to AHAs - they speed up the process the skin goes through to shed dead outer cells, which in turn reveals new, smoother skin cells. Collagen is found naturally in the skin, the protein maintains the skin’s elasticity and keeps it looking plump. Over the years though, the body’s production of collagen drops dramatically. Used in many anti-ageing creams, collegan is found to be a very effective waterbinding ingredient. Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A. They have been found to help to renew the skin and stimulate collagen production, minimise the appearance of wrinkles and bolster the skin’s thickness and elasticity; which makes them a popular ingredient in anti-ageing creams.

dark spots by blocking the pathway of melanin. They can aid in preventing collagen loss in postmenopausal women as they have an effect on skin that is similar to oestrogen. Copper makes an appearance in some anti-ageing products as it is thought to promote the production of collagen and elastin - two of the most important factors in younger looking skin. Hydroquinone is useful in suppressing pigment producing enzymes in the skin, thus fighting age spots. It’s therefore, often recommended by experts to lighten those dark spots on the skin.

Growth factors are used to help to build collagen and diminish lines and wrinkles, whilst softening the skin. Their natural function in the body is to control cell growth in different areas. Soy isoflavones are a type of plant hormone thought to be useful in treating

MOTORS MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV

It’s not very often a car comes along with the promise of ‘changing the game’ but that’s exactly what Mitsubishi believes its new plug-in hybrid Outlander will do. We took it for a spin on and off road to see if we can believe the hype. What is it? It’s an SUV with a seriously clever powertrain that combines a 2.0-litre petrol unit with battery technology. On pure electric the car can travel up to 32 miles, even at motorway speeds, and when the batteries are depleted an engine takes over to keep you motoring. All that clever technology has huge benefits too such as no road tax, Congestion Charge exemption, and just 5% BIK for company car drivers. But that’s not all you get all this with NO price premium over the equivalent diesel model. That’s an industry first and to put it into perspective, Volvo’s plug-in hybrid V60 commands an £11,000 premium over the diesel. What’s under the bonnet? It’s not what’s under the bonnet that matters but what’s hidden in the floor; a wedge of batteries. As the plug-in name suggests you can top these up every night, for around £1, from a normal three-pin plug. If you do no more than 30-odd miles a day, and top the car up every night, you’ll never use the fuel in the tank. On those occasions when a longer trip needs to be made, you can use the electric range and then rely on the petrol unit to power the wheels, which in itself will do 48mpg.

The switch between the two units is seamless. Officially the combined economy is 148mpg, but this will vary depending on where you use it and how often you charge the batteries. What’s the spec like? The bottom of the range model gets 18-inch alloys, cruise control, air-con, leather steering wheel, reversing camera, Bluetooth and a lot more. On higher spec models there’s a mobile phone App (Apple and Windows) that lets you change the heating settings, view current range and even operate the headlights and horn remotely. Also, it’s worth remembering this is a proper off-roader with 190mm ground clearance, fourwheel drive and Mitsubishi’s renowned reliability. Any rivals? Not really. This is the first true plug-in hybrid SUV. The closest thing to a rival comes from Volvo, in the shape of its S60 plug-in hybrid - but remember that costs nearly £50,000, and commands a £11,280 premium over the equivalent diesel. The Outlander PHEV starts at a ridiculous £28,249.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

43

What’s it like to drive? In EV mode it’s near silent and although the petrol unit is a little revvy when it kicks in, it’s not nasty. It’ll hit 60mph in 11 seconds, which is quicker than the diesel, and reaches a top speed of 106mph. It’s all very refined though and wind and road noise is kept to a minimum. There are lots of clever tricks up the PHEV’s sleeve too like the ability to hold a charge and use the petrol engine instead at the touch of a button, and the ability to recharge back to 80 per cent when left on tick over for just half an hour. Our only complaint would be a rather hard ride.

The AOL Cars Verdict The biggest winners are company car drivers who effectively get a £10,000 pay rise a year if they’re higher rate tax payers, plus free fuel. Business owners are winners too as they can write down the full cost of the car in the first year. If you’re a normal car driver then the benefits of EV motoring, no road tax and Congestion Charge exemption will be equally attractive. And remember this is all wrapped up in a comfortable, highriding, go-anywhere off-roader. HEALTH YOUR GUIDE TO HEART HEALTH The British Heart Foundation estimates that around 82,000 people in England suffer a heart attack each year, with one in three people dying before they reach hospital. And it’s not only the elderly around half of heart attack survivors living in the UK are under 75. So it’s vital that we look after our heart and that we recognise the symptoms of a heart attack, and know what to do for ourselves and others when one occurs. Keeping your heart healthy. Diet Keep it balanced. Avoid or reduce high sugar and high fat foods, and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Choose wholegrain carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta) or potatoes and try to include several sources of protein in your diet (meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, legumes and pulses). Alcohol Alcohol can damage your heart muscle and cause abnormal rhythms. Stick to the recommended guidelines; remember they’re maximum safe limits, not targets. For men this is 3-4 units per day (max 21 per week) and for women 2-3 per day (max 14 per week). Not sure what a unit is? 1 unit = 1 small bottle of (4%) alcopop OR half a pint of beer/lager/cider (4%) OR a single measure of spirits (40%). 2 units = 1 standard 175ml glass of wine/champagne (12%) OR 1 pint 4% beer/lager/cider OR 1x 440ml can of 5% beer/lager/cider OR a double measure of spirits. Smoking Smokers are at least twice as likely to have a heart attack, so try to quit, or at least cut down. Don’t try to go it alone - ask your doctor for advice. The British Heart Foundation has published a useful guide called Time to Quit, which can be ordered for free on their website. Exercise Ideally we should all do 150 minutes (two and a half hours) of moderate exercise a week - exercise that gets

you a little out of breath and raises your heart rate. This helps to keep your cardiovascular system healthy. Your heart is a muscle and like your other muscles, it needs exercise to keep it healthy. If you don’t exercise, then start small and build up. Try to find an exercise you enjoy. Symptoms of heart attacks Although we think of heart attacks as presenting with sudden intense chest pain, that’s often not the case. Heart attacks sometimes start very slowly; symptoms can be mild and build slowly, particularly in those with diabetes, or come and go; or they can be sudden and intense. Although chest pain is the most common heart attack sign, nearly half of women and around a third of men arrive at hospital without chest discomfort. Chest pain (often like a squeezing sensation, or a fullness, which may linger, worsen, or come and go) Dizziness or light-headedness Sweaty (normally a cold sweat) Shortness of breath (often before chest pain occurs you may feel the need to pant or take deep breaths) Nausea or vomiting Pain away from the chest (usually in the jaw, neck, back, left arm or abdomen) Heartburn Coughing or wheezing Sudden or severe fatigue Overwhelming anxiety

Additional heart attack symptoms in women Women may experience all the usual symptoms or none, but we now know women are more likely to experience some of the less common symptoms - pain in other areas (particularly the upper back) as well as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea or vomiting, dizziness and unusual tiredness (sometimes for days); without accompanying chest pain, they don’t always realise they’re having a heart attack. What to do when a heart attack occurs Try not to panic, but do act swiftly. If you’re in any doubt, always call 999; don’t presume it’s just indigestion, anxiety, or a virus. If you’re an angina sufferer and have quick-acting glyceryl trinitrate (‘GTN’) tablets or a spray, the NHS recommends using this medication and then having a repeat dose 5 minutes later if there is no improvement; a third dose can be taken another 5 minutes later, but if this doesn’t make a difference, phone 999 immediately.

pain relief but to thin the blood and maintain a healthy blood supply to the heart. If you’re the patient: Move as little as is necessary to get help, and call an ambulance - don’t drive yourself to hospital. Take an aspirin, but only if it’s nearby - don’t exert yourself to reach it. If you’re attending the patient: Phone the ambulance immediately. If the patient isn’t aspirin-allergic, fetch them an adult aspirin (300mg) tablet - providing they won’t be unattended for more than a moment to get it. Keeping your heart healthy is one of the most important things you can do but ensuring you’re prepared to take the correct action if a heart attack occurs is vital too. By Alison Runham

Both the NHS and the British Heart Foundation recommend that people who suspect they’re having a heart attack should chew and swallow one adult aspirin (300mg) tablet, providing they’re not allergic to it not for

TECH GUIDE PICK A SIDE - APPLE OR ANDROID?

Is Apple where it’s at, or are Android gadgets better buys? Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap.

top boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems and that’s just the stuff we know about.

Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it - and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from.

This means you need to consider the bigger picture. It’s not just about the particular phone or tablet you want to buy, but what techy types call the ecosystem: the various things that the phone or tablet connects to and gets content from. For example, if you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you want to use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on.

Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not viceversa.

Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the companies from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your health and fitness. By the end of this year both firms will have smart watches or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, set-

Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come.

The sessions also develop breathing control, coordination and stability of the body, changing muscle lengths, relaxing and re-balancing the body.” No matter what age, sex, size or shape Pilates classes can build up core strength, helping to avoid or recover from injury, improve posture, balance and gain a greater mind and body awareness. SC Pilates classes are performed in a group environment with class sizes kept small to ensure participants receive the attention they require. One to one sessions can also be arranged by appointment.

SC Pilates, founded in 2013 by Silvia Catani, offers Pilates classes in Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Bearsden and Milngavie. This simple, yet effective exercise method can help participants develop a healthy self-image, through the development of better posture, proper coordination, breathing and improved flexibility. As a direct result of their weekly practice, Silvia's clients often experience improvements in confidence, selfesteem and self-awareness resulting in a new zest for life. Silvia Catani, owner of SC Pilates, said “Having been recommended to try Pilates to overcome back pain in 2008, I quickly fell in love with the health and wellbeing benefits experienced as a result of my weekly practice. I was so passionate about how Pilates had helped me, I wanted to share this with others, which prompted me to embark upon my studies as a Pilates instructor and subsequently change career to allow me to teach others this highly rewarding exercise method.” Karen from Milngavie commented: “Silvia's classes are enjoyable and relaxing. She explains everything brilliantly and ensures that everyone has the correct positioning which is so important with Pilates. My back problems are improving and I am so much more aware of my posture and stance, in general - Silvia has helped me to correct bad habits I have had for years!“ Silvia commented “High fitness levels or great suppleness are not a necessary prerequisite for Pilates. In fact, my Pilates classes enhance both of

BOOKS FUNNY GIRLS

Barbara Streisand may have been the ‘Funny Girl’ of the silver screen, but some of these ladies have been making audiences laugh their Bridget Jones-style big pants off for years. We’ve put together a selection of books by funny women, for funny women, or just women in general…or men who want to talk about problems with hair in unwanted places, and how to walk in high heels. Bonkers: My Life in Laughs - Jennifer Saunders We couldn’t talk about Dawn French and then not include Jennifer Saunders’ memoir, Bonkers. A selfconfessed procrastinator, Saunders seems to be under the impression - it’s a bit of a miracle she’s achieved anything. There’s never been a life plan she says, more a sort of stumbling from one thing to the next, but it seems to be working for her. The book follows her haphazard working life alongside fellow ‘bluffer’ French and is full of their adventures together as well as those had whilst working on her own series such as Absolutely Fabulous. Then of course, there is her battle with cancer; again, not something she had planned for. She doesn’t shy away from talking about the tough times and it seems that laughter really could be the best medicine. I Hate Everyone…Starting With Me - Joan Rivers The queen of controversy and the heeled assassin of the red carpet, no one is safe from the acid-tongued Joan Rivers, including it seems, herself. The New York Times bestseller is a no holds barred rant about everything that gets on Joan’s nerves; nothing is sacred, especially not ugly children. Rivers has made a career out of making fun of people and this is a pretty hilarious rant. You might want to read it in small doses though, or face seeing the world through very jaded glasses

Dear Fatty - Dawn French National treasure Dawn French has had an amazing career as a funny girl and this memoir is written as a series of letters to people who have influenced her life. Dear Fatty is a fantastic blend of honesty, poignancy and controversy, just like the comedy actress herself. As one half of the nation’s best-loved female comedy duo, French and Saunders, she and her partner in crime redefined the roles of women in entertainment. With their sideways look at life that started with performances in Comic Strip they’ve sent up pretty much everyone in their hugely successful TV series. French tackles everything, from her career to her father’s death, and not forgetting a nation’s obsession with her size. A brilliant read. How to be a Woman - Caitlin Moran Moran’s definitive guide to being female will tell every Miss, Mrs and Ms everything we’re supposed to be doing as we totter through life in toe-crushing heels, as well as raising all the questions we’re not supposed to ask, such as ‘do we really need to wax?’ and ‘should a sense of broodiness be in-built?’ It’s a laugh out loud book that will make you feel better about your old lady chin whiskers and your inability to get on a trampoline post kids. Billed as being ‘part memoir, part rant’ this is a laugh-out-loud-funny book that will reassure the ‘fairer sex’ and educate the male population, provided the blokes can get past the chapters on puberty.
