MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Garbage - Not Your Kind of People The fifth studio album from the alt-rock ensemble Garbage, 2012's ‘Not Your Kind of People’ is the band's first release since 2005's ‘Bleed Like Me’. Previously, the band had gone on individual projects as drummer Butch Vig's production work - which nabbed him a Grammy for Green Day's 2009 album ‘21st Century Breakdown’ - and lead-singer Shirley Manson's own creative pursuits, including acting. In February of 2010, the band met up for some initial studio recordings in Los Angeles. Featuring over 15 new tracks, ‘Not Your Kind of People’ includes the lead-off single ‘I Hate Love’. Frontwoman Shirley Manson has said that the band's forthcoming album, 'Not Your Kind Of People', has been inspired by David Bowie, Siouxsie Sioux and Cocteau Twins.

Norah Jones - Little Broken Hearts ‘Little Broken Hearts’ is the fascinating next step in the artistic evolution of Norah Jones, who has flitted between easy listening, jazz, lounge, country, punk and beyond in her career to date. Her stunning new album is produced by Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). Jones’ forthcoming release takes inspiration from the vintage film posters hanging in Burton’s studio, especially the one for 1965’s Mudhoney. This year also marks the 10-year anniversary of Jones’ debut ‘Come Away With Me’, which just became the No10 bestselling album of the Soundscan era, having sold 25 million copies worldwide. ‘Little Broken Hearts’ features original songs co-written by Jones and Burton that give her an arguably more edgy sound than ever before.

Alabama Shakes: Boys & Girls The quartet Alabama Shakes (formed in 2009 in Athens, Alabama) have hardly been a secret in the past six months. The group boasts a familiar blend of southern rock music, with a twist of soul, blues, and gospel. Brittany Howard's voice glistens with a genuine and rich affluence of soul. Her vocals and lyrics are all equally matched by fantastic backing music that entices the ears, and leaves the listener far from bored. ‘Boys & Girls’ demonstrates that Alabama Shakes, standing solely on one album, have found themselves completely comfortable with their musical roots, and the group does not seem like they are ready to forget about them anytime soon.

GOLF TIP

THE BEST SWING EXERCISE IN THE WORLD.... EVER! Take your posture as normal, but put the butt end of the club into your belly button. Grip down the shaft as if holding the club normally (both arms relatively straight). Then, turn back until the club shaft is parallel to the ground. You should be able to do this without the club coming out from your belly button. This gets your muscles used to working in tandem with each other while you rotate your body on the backswing. Try it and see how you get on being connected! For more tips and insightful information, sign up to my weekly email newsletter by emailing daryn.cochrane@foremostgolf.com

AT THE CINEMA DAMSELS IN DISTRESS

Whit Stillman returns to screens this month after a 13-year hiatus to remind us why he's one of the finest and most acclaimed indie directors of all time. College campuses will never be the same again, literally, as Damsels In Distress centres its fictitious narrative on some unsung American academic revolutionaries - groups of girls that arrived in US universities when campuses first went co-ed. The sudden influx of femininity into once entirely masculine environments caused a rift in student communities everywhere, and, if real life was anything like this film, led to some hilarious situations. Violet (Greta Gerwig), is sweet as apple pie, and along with her beautiful friends Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke, That '70s Show) and Heather (Carrie Maclemore, Gossip Girl) arrives at Seven Oaks with one intention, or maybe two: to get an education, and to make life around the lecture theatres more female-friendly. Cue open understanding, fresh flowers and elegant dinner dresses replacing the grunting stags who have nothing better to do than read Playboy and drink beer. The trio begin to make an impact on two levels. Firstly, through the promotion of good hygiene, their effect on some of the boys becomes evident. And secondly, with the opening of a 'suicide prevention centre', the mental wealth of their young lady comrades on campus improves (many are at risk from something called 'grunge' - poor grooming and depression caused by aspirations to date above their

social status). This outpouring of goodwill is extinguished like a bonfire at a frat party when Priss (Caitlin Fitzgerald) starts something with Violet's boyfriend, the dim-witted Frank (Ryan Metcalf). From here, a classic college comedy unfolds, though American Pie this is not. Stillman's masterful direction and pin-point accurate script make this perhaps the funniest film driven by intelligent dialogue and timing since February's Carnage. Along the way we run into the likes of Thor (Billy Magnussen), who is what you might call educationally challenged after over-optimistic parents forced him to skip kindergarten. Then there's the shapeshifting Charlie (Adam Brody), to whom Violet takes a shine due to his notably deeper personality when compared with his keg-chugging buddies. We haven't seen a feature from Stillman since 1998's The Last Days of Disco. His latest is a different film of course for starters it isn't set in a club filled with oddballs and strange occurrences. But there's no denying the clear connections between his two most recent releases. Both find pleasure in the peripheries of everyday life, where eccentric behaviour is the norm, romance is an inherent theme throughout, and both rely on astute players on the end of sharp scripts. Stillman may be something of a modern day Woody Allen then, and if that appeals, then Damsels will too.

TRAVEL BANGKOK - RIVERSIDE TEMPLES

Bangkok is dotted with nearly 400 fairytale temples, known as ‘wats’, the most magnificent rising on the banks of the Chao Phraya. Colourful, dazzling, they are among the top attractions in Thailand’s capital. Here, monks meditate and study scriptures, medicine and astrology, tourists marvel at all the glitter and gold and the locals pray, read their horoscopes and chat with their friends. There are food stalls by the gate and on holy days, temple fairs where you can buy amulets and herbal remedies. Some temples are humble places haunted only by monks in saffron robes, others bustle with visitors. A few have a claim to fame, the highest dome, the largest bell, cloisters filled with the scent of jasmine or a 5½ ton Buddha of solid gold, hidden under a layer of stucco until it was dropped during transport in the 1950s. The Thais are devout Buddhists and most men, including the king, spend some time in the monkhood, whether a whole life or a few days. On the left bank of

the Chao Phraya, the royal chapel is a stunning extravaganza of gold leaf, multicoloured mosaics and mythical creatures keeping watch in the courtyards, from fierce guardians with green faces to slender ‘garudas’, half-bird half-human. There are bell towers and spires, pavilions with upturned eaves, pagodas, colonnades and white elephant statues believed to be lucky. High above it all, in a dedicated chapel, the small Emerald Buddha sits under a nine-tiered umbrella, carved from a single piece of jade and highly revered as he protects the kingdom. There is barely a whisper in the air but the chanting of monks echoes along the walls. The royal temple is close to the Grand Palace and three times a year, in a special ceremony, the king changes the Buddha’s robes to match the new season. Down river, Wat Po, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is the oldest and largest of the wats, a busy place where 300 monks mingle with visitors. The Buddha fills an entire hall, stretching for 140 feet, nearly 50 feet high, covered in gold leaf and mother of pearl incrusted in the soles of his feet in 108 auspicious

Regardless of faith, the Buddha touches your soul, totally serene as he approaches nirvana. Meanwhile, in the courtyards bristling with gleaming shrines, families picnic under the trees or buy a caged bird to set it free, for a blessing, and tourists bargain for rubbings of temple carvings. As the seat of the country’s first university, Wat Po is also a reputed centre of learning and the best place in Bangkok to try traditional medicine or enjoy an authentic Thai massage. But across the river, Wat Arun is the most iconic of all. This is the Temple of Dawn, perfectly poised to reflect

the early morning light from its lofty Khmer-style tower. Rising some 220 feet above the water, it is covered in seashells and pieces of Chinese porcelain once used as ballast on incoming ships. Demons and monkeys guard the sanctuary while steep narrow steps lead up to the dizzying b a l c o n y overlooking the river, the palace and neighbouring temples. Once a year, the King sails down the Chao Phraya in full regalia to present new robes to the monks of Wat Arun after their traditional fast. The royal barge procession is said to be the most colourful festival in Bangkok.

Local Business praises TV Daybreak's safety campaign Martin Long from Apollo Blinds in Clydebank has praised ITV's breakfast show Daybreak for its campaign to raise awareness of child safety for window blinds. The programme recently ran a three-day campaign to raise awareness about unsecured window blind looped cords after a number of fatalities of young children across the UK who had become tangled in them. Martin, who owns the Apollo showroom on Kilbowie Road, Clydebank is delighted that Daybreak has given the issue vital national coverage. “Window blinds from responsible retailers like Apollo have come with safety devices as standard for a number of years,” said Martin. ”But the TV campaign highlighted the problem of existing blinds which may not have been fitted with safety devices when they were originally installed. We have seen a rise in the number of parents and grandparents wanting advice and information about child safety as a result of the Daybreak programme and we're happy to help as it's such an important issue.”

“We have a selection of safety devices available which are easy to fit to make sure existing blinds are safe.” As well as having safety devices as standard on products such as roller blinds that have a corded mechanism, Apollo has been an industry leader in pioneering the development of blinds which don't require cords at all. “Apollo has led the way in developing cordless blinds, which aren't just safe but look stunning in any room in any home,” added Martin. “We've seen a huge rise in demand for them and expect this to continue increasing because they are gorgeous and practical.” You can visit Martin's showroom at Apollo Blinds 36 Kilbowie Road, Clyedebank to see an extensive range of cordless blinds or call 0141 941 1852 to get practical information on child safety. Apollo Blinds are also exhibiting cordless blinds and promoting child safety at the forthcoming Scottish Baby and Toddler Show at Glasgow's SECC from 27th to 29th April 2012.

INTERIORS WONDERFUL WINDOWS They keep in the warmth and keep out prying eyes, but window treatments are much more than a purely practical addition to a room, says Katherine Sorrell. Curtains - where to start The cheapest and most subtle option for hanging curtains is undoubtedly a plastic or metal track. Double tracks can be used to hang both nets and thicker curtains neatly, while triple tracks allow you to use flat panels, perhaps of different fabrics, which can be pulled back and forwards in different combinations depending on the effect you want or how much light you wish to allow in. The more decorative alternative is a curtain pole perhaps in see-through acrylic, slender stainless steel or pale-painted wood and with pretty finials on the ends. On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening. Curtains - fabric and style Whether you prefer minimal panels or swathes of fabric, it is best to take into account the architecture and size of the room, and of the windows, before opting for a particular curtain style. Grander curtains tend to suit larger, period rooms, while simple curtains are often best suited to modern properties. The way in which a curtain hangs is determined by its heading, usually created by a tape which is sewn onto the back of the curtain and pulled to form gentle gathers, smart pleats or a variety of other shapes. For a less formal look, however, there are plenty of alternatives. Tab and tietops are often found on ready-made curtains, though they can be fiddly to draw. Curtains can also be hung from a deep hem which is simply slid over a pole, from large eyelets punched in the top (this looks great hung from a tension wire), from clips (magnetic ones are easy to use) or even just from hooks. Curtains can be made from practically any fabric, depending on your budget. The heavier the fabric, the better it will hold a fold, though very heavy fabrics will be too bulky for smaller windows. Very light fabrics will tend to look floppy unless supported by a lining. Lining is, in fact, always a good idea, as it will not only help the fabric hang neatly, but also protect it from fading, dirt and condensation. Thermal linings help retain heat,

and can be as effective as double glazing, while blackout lining also blocks out light and some noise. Blinds Once considered something of a poor cousin to curtains, blinds are increasingly fashionable, offering a clean-lined look that is sophisticated and laid-back yet still pleasingly tactile. What’s more, they tend to be far cheaper, as they require much less fabric just the size of the window opening, plus hems. There are different options to suit different styles of room, many of them easy to make yourself or inexpensive to buy off-theshelf. A roller blind in a neutral colour will blend into the background in a modern, minimal space, or could be used in conjunction with ‘dress’ curtains (fixed either side of the window) in a more formal room.

Roman blinds pull up in lovely soft folds that give an attractive drape without going over the top, while fabric roll-up blinds which, literally, roll up from the bottom and tie in position, show off their reverse, thus offering an attractive combination of two fabrics. When choosing fabrics, mid-weight, not-too-textured fabrics tend to be best for blinds, which need to roll or fold easily against themselves. Shutters They may not be the obvious choice, and they are almost always more expensive than blinds or simple curtains, but shutters are good-looking in an unfussy kind of way and suit both old and new properties. They’re also great for privacy, for blocking out sound and light and adding an extra layer of security. Depending on the configuration of your window, shutters can be made as a single pair, bi-fold, tri-fold or whatever will fit, either full-length, half-height (café style), or tier-on-tier, rectangular, tapering or arched in shape, and either set within the reveal or folding back against the wall. The plainest, period-type shutters have a timber frame and a solid centre panel they can be painted any colour and complement a Georgian or Victorian home extremely well. American shutters have louvres that tilt up and down, offering privacy but also

letting in light. Alternatively, for a highly contemporary effect, it’s possible to have shutters made from s l e e k aluminium or funky acrylic, which comes in a range of gorgeous colours.

The secret of this Ninni Rund pair of ready made curtains from Ikea (0845 358 3363; ikea.co.uk), £49.99, is that they have both hidden tabs and a gathering tape at the top.

WEDDINGS PICKING THE PERFECT DRESS

Now that the wedding season is in full swing and many couples are eagerly anticipating their big day, attention turns to finding that perfect dress. Fortunately there is more choice than ever on offer to beguile brides-to-be – from High Street bargains to high-end fashion. Retailers are becoming increasingly aware of the market demands for ‘designer style’ at high street prices and many new, more affordable ranges, are emerging. Although for most of us the romantic idyll of the celebrity marriage on sun-kissed foreign shores is as distant as the Caribbean beach on which it takes place, with so many different gowns and accessories available, you’ll be sure to look just as good as they do. Whether you have had your dress designed in your mind for years or you are only just starting to look for

style inspiration, the fantastic array of classic, cutting edge and modern designs infiltrating high street boutiques means that finding your dream dress is far more likely to become a reality. For many this comes as a welcome alternative to commissioning a bespoke creation with a more hefty price tag. As vintage chic is an enormous trend at the moment and is showing no sign of going away, many top designers are taking inspiration from bygone eras by producing magnificent gowns with extreme embellishments. Ian Stuart’s latest collection – which is typically theatrical, playful and utterly romantic – capitalises on this with truly magical results. Taking ideas from this means that you can revel in a wide choice of sumptuous fabrics, layers of luscious lace and fantastic appliqué work – not to mention heavenly embroidery – when designing the bodice.

Embracing full-on vintage style and purchasing an authentic period dress, or adapting a family piece, can not only be a cost effective measure for the more budget aware, but can have spectacular results, as you are guaranteed to have a totally unique gown which will certainly not look embarrassingly dated in years to come. adaptations can easily provide a way for you to stamp your own style and personality on any vintage piece. Using classic make-up and hair styling can help to achieve the full period look, but as an alternative, adopting a more modern style can marry two periods together and work exceptionally well. With that in mind, you can carry forward the ideas of ‘something old, something new’, when choosing accessories. A tiara from the 1920s can sit happily alongside contemporary earrings. For those who love modern styles and who would not – even for a minute – entertain the idea of anything other than a sparkling new gown, Vera Wang’s latest collection of creations will suit perfectly. As a designer whose creations have been worn by numerous celebrities over the years, Wang’s wedding dresses have consistently been big news. And the reason for

And then there’s Frank Usher’s exciting bridal range which is tailored towards the bride-to-be who requires simple, elegant styling. His new ‘Destination Bridal’ collection is ideal for those marrying in an exotic location; but of course, this will work just as well for a summer wedding at home. For a modern dress, with sleek lines and ultra chic style, this new collection is well worth a look. Undoubtedly, the decision of which dress to choose just became harder albeit in a good way, as being spoilt for choice is never bad. And be reassured: if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to a designer gown, you can still acquire a similar look. The high street always reflects the catwalk . But for real savings, adapting a vintage gown might just mean that you have enough left over for a honeymoon of your dreams. But all that’s another story.

BEAUTY FRESH FACED - THE ULTIMATE AT HOME FACIAL A trip to the beauty salon is the ultimate treat for many women after a stressful and hectic day. But, ‘me time’ should continue at home too as regular care of your skin will have lifetime benefits. A facial is a great pick-me-up and one of those all-important treatments that not only results in glowing skin, but leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated too. And what’s more you can achieve near professional results at home. Part of the joy of treating yourself to a salon session is soaking up the atmosphere - the gentle lighting and soothing music equal total relaxation - so recreate that by turning your bathroom into a candle lit haven, that’s delicately fragranced and full of luxurious accessories. Cleanse away the day by removing all traces of make-up. You must use a liquid eye make-up remover, cleanser and toner make up remover wipes are convenient but not as thorough nor as pleasant to use. Use a muslin cloth that’s been submerged in hot water to place over the face in order to open up the pores. Leave for a few moments before repeating. Double cleanse by using a wash off cleanser that will extract any deeply ingrained dirt and grime. Smooth the product over the face and neck, before removing using circular, upward motions. Splash with water. Now that the skin is at this stage it’s time to work on congested areas. If you are prone to blackheads then a good exfoliator is essential for clearing out blocked pores. And what’s more, they are great for removing dead skin cells and revealing brighter, fresher and younger looking skin. Apply the exfoliant to damp skin and work all over, concentrating on the forehead, nose and chin. Always

use upwards, circular movements and don’t be tempted to scrub - light strokes are all that’s needed. After exfoliating, apply a face mask. Ensure that it’s the right kind for you - if you have combination skin then use assorted masks, applied in different areas for the very best results. Many beauty therapists do this so that they can address the requirements of each part of the face. Thermal masks are fabulous. They gently heat up to draw out impurities and prove to be the perfect pampering treat.

37

With your face mask on, it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy doing nothing for a few minutes. Use a wet face cloth to remove the mask and splash your face with cool water before drying thoroughly. At this point your skin should be feeling totally refreshed and super soft, but there is still more to do.

1

Applying an eye cream is a must to protect against and fight off wrinkles. Start at the outer most point of the eye and use light tapping motions to press the product into the skin. Because the eye area is so sensitive it really is vital that you do not rub, drag or pull. Moisturise using a product that suits your skin’s needs and as you apply treat yourself to a mini massage that will stimulate circulation and bring much needed oxygen and nutrition to the surface. Work from the centre of your face, moving upwards and outwards, using your fingers and palms to lift and smooth the skin. Don’t forget to include your neck in the massage too.

MOTORS MINI COUPE ROAD TEST

The Mini brand is expanding yet again this time into the niche Coupe market. James Baggott finds out more Yet another Mini that’s been tweaked to keep the brand’s sales moving upwards. Sales for the maker are up 14 per cent year on year in a market down five per cent and the Coupe aims to add around 3,000 a year to that total. Classed as a ‘halo’ model, it’s not expected to be a volume seller, but a rival to the likes of the VW Scirocco and Audi TT. It has a lower roof, boot spoiler and only two seats. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? There are diesel and petrol options. As it’s the halo model, Mini won’t be offering One versions, only Cooper, Cooper S, SD, and John Cooper Works versions. We tried the SD and John Cooper Works. The latter is the range-topper offering 149mph top speed, 060mph in 6.2 seconds and 39.8mpg. The diesel is a bit clattery but great to drive. It returns 65.7mpg, hits 134mph and passes 60mph in 7.7s.

WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? High. Standard equipment includes DAB radio, air-con, parking sensors, alloy wheels and sport stripes. But as with all Minis, it’s the personalisation both via factory order and dealer- fitted accessories which are plentiful. The famous TLC servicing pack is available for £249 and some 98 per cent of buyers are expected to take it up. We’d like to know who the two per cent are that don’t… WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? Enjoyable, but for taller drivers, extremely uncomfortable. The low roofline means you have to constantly crick your neck and the seats sent our legs to sleep within 10 minutes. It handles much like the hatch and in the dry is extremely chuckable, but in the wet it suffered with understeer. But none of that will stop fashion-hungry buyers snapping them up.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

43

WHAT DO THE PRESS SAY? Auto Express said they thought ‘the powerful model has the makings of a machine that will take the brand to a group of drivers who feel that the standard hatch just isn’t tough enough’. While rivals Autocar said: ‘If you can live with the striking looks and driving appeal is a priority, it’s certainly worth considering.’

Roadster due next year, it’s clear the Mini brand’s expansion is set to continue apace. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

WHAT DO WE THINK OF IT? The looks certainly grew on us during our test, but no amount of driving dynamics could take our attention away from the pain in our legs, not something any driver wants to experience. With only 3,000 expected to find homes, this low-volume model will be a fashion statement for style-conscious buyers. And with a

Julie has over 10 years experience and comes highly trained by Rita Rusk International, and has undertaken latest courses by Toni & Guy and Vidal Sassoon. She also has diplomas and specialises in advanced cutting and colouring techniques keeping up with the latest trends and fashions. Having previously owned a salon and guest house in Milngavie before moving to Spain for a few years, where she owned a successful International salon, she came back to the area and soon realised there was no-one offering such a unique designer service on a mobile basis and started trading. In next to no time, she has acquired clients and numbers continue to grow as the public realise they

can now receive a designer cut at competitive local prices, mostly at a time to suit themselves and all in the comfort of their home, cutting out those travelling and parking nightmares! Her hairdressing business has been focussed on the needs of her clients to create the best possible results and she will listen carefully and blend your needs with her in-depth knowledge. Julie tells us “As a Mobile Hairdresser I know the problems for many is just getting to the Salon in the first place; take mothers for example, many find it hard to get there with their kids - especially juggling all their social activities! Others might be temporarily incapacitated and require mobile services, as do those with a flexible / work-from-home lifestyle, thus saving time. The whole family could even save money by having their hair done together”. This is a unique mobile hairdressing service and is such a great choice.

GARDENING

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

KEEPING PESTS AT BAY THE NATURAL WAY

More and more people have become concerned about using chemicals in the garden. Indeed, some gardeners have used chemicals rarely, if at all, for many years. It may be that you are worried about wildlife and conservation in general or you may also be concerned about using gardening pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat. Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Some of the most infuriating pests are to be found in greenhouses, conservatories and other protected areas, where they can thrive and breed rapidly. It is a great help to know that there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and

parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.co m) and then released into your greenhouse or c o n s e r v a t o r y. T h e s e insects or mites do a great job of keeping many common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. For those who are troubled by pests such as leather jackets (symptoms are deteriorating patches in the lawn, shortly followed by the lawn being ripped up by birds or badgers searching for the ‘delicious’ grubs) or chafer grubs (also responsible for damage caused by eating plant roots), there are now biological controls available to keep these at bay too. There is also a fairly new control available, which sends ants off in the other direction - wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped! I garden organically so I use these biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also used as a place where you or the family relax or perhaps enjoy a drink or a meal, I’d say it is especially important not to fill it full of potentially harmful chemicals. If you want to try these controls then you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues -

otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need another mite, this time the predatory Phytoseiulus. Introduce these in amongst the infested plants and they will automatically go in search of the pests, soon getting their numbers under control and all without you having to lift a finger. It may sound off-putting to release wasps into your greenhouse or conservatory (or mites come to that) but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests.

precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are a few, but not too many, pests around. If you wait until the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread within the greenhouse. Now that’s what I call useful. By Pippa Greenwood

Biological controls, including those for slugs and vine weevils, are all tricky for garden centres to stock, as what you are buying are living creatures which won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf for too long. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post along with strict instructions for storage (they should usually be kept in the fridge) and for using before the use-by date expires. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and are used by many professional growers.

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

To ensure success you must follow the instructions

TECH GUIDE THE BEST KITCHEN GADGETS Celebrity chefs have made cooking cool, and the gadget industry hasn’t been slow to cash in: from items that’ll brighten up your kitchen to technology that can make your food more healthy, there are all kinds of gadgets for all kinds of cooks. One of our favourite kitchen gadgets is Taylor’s Coloured Kitchen Knife Block (£34.99), a clear perspex block with five neon-coloured knives embedded in it. The knives are stainless steel but they’ve been given a special non-stick, dishwasher safe coating to turn them into works of art. If you have an iPad, you might already be using recipe apps to plan your meals, but have you stuck your tablet on your fridge? The £34.99 FridgePad does just that, enabling you to watch Jamie Oliver’s tips, keep an eye on a recipe or just watch the TV or listen to music while you chop and cook. The FridgePad promises to hold 25 times its own weight, although we’d be checking our home insurance coverage just in case. Even the humble egg has gadgets: the £14.99 BeepEgg is a singing egg timer that you chuck into the pot with your eggs. It then plays different tunes to alert you to different levels of hardness, so for example you get “Killing Me Softly” for soft-boiled eggs. If that kind of whimsy makes you smile, you might also like the Monday Morning Heat Changing Mug (£14.99): it starts off dark with a sad expression, but when you pour in hot water, tea or coffee it turns into a yellow smiley face. Kitchen gadgets can be sensible as well as smiley. Philips’ AirFryer (from around £200) promises all the joy of deep fried food without the fat: instead of a big bucket of oil, it has a grill and circulates air to cook food using 80% less fat than traditional fryers. Tefal’s ActiFry offers

a similarly high-tech approach to health, but it’s a good bit cheaper: the FZ700015 model is widely available for less than £120 and enables you to cook enough chips for four with just one spoonful of oil. If you’re the kind of person who breaks out the barbecue at the first sign of sun, gadgets can help you with that too: digital thermometers (widely available from around £5) enable you to check that the inside of the food isn’t still raw when the outside’s been burned to a crisp. While you’re at it, you might want to order a BBQ Branding Iron (£12.99 from MenKind.co.uk) to burn your name - or any text you like - into the food you’re cooking. More sensibly - and as useful indoors as out Hostess makes a cordless hot tray that keeps plates of food warm for up to an hour from a single 8-minute charge, while Barcraft’s rotary Ice Crusher (from around £16) crushes ice for those all-important cocktails. Sometimes the best gadgets are the simplest ones, such as Joseph Joseph’s many cookware ideas: the firm’s bright-coloured, beautifully designed kitchen gadgets range from adjustable spaghetti measures to chopping boards that fold up for washing ingredients or emptying them into pots and, if you can imagine it, the company probably makes it: there are herb choppers and rotary peelers, citrus juicers with built-in pipcatchers, dual-purpose grinders and pump-action potato mashers. Our favourite, though, is the Cut and Carve, a chopping board that’s on an angle and has a lip to catch juices when you’re carving meat or chopping fruit. Like all good gadgets it’s beautifully simple and makes us wish we’d thought of it first.

Auto Repair for Dummies by Deanna Sclar This collection wouldn’t be complete without a title from this hugely-popular range of ‘how to’ books, and if you don’t like calling your mechanic every time a windscreen wiper falls off or a light comes on the dashboard, this will arm you with all you need to diagnose and repair a number of problems on your own driveway. Jargon-free and easy to follow, every car owner should own a copy.

You Can Do it: The Complete Step by Step, from B&Q An essential item for any homeowner, this breeze-block of a book explains how to do all those jobs both inside and outside the house, from painting windows and grouting, to fixing the cat-flap. The Gardener’s Pocket Bible by Roni Jay Can’t remember when to trim that hedge or how deep to plant the bulbs? Want to know how to treat greenfly without nasty pesticides?
