March From the Vicarage: Hello everyone How are you?

Personally it is great to be writing this letter to you all with blue sky and sunshine outside. March brings signs of spring, daffodils and primroses, longer (and generally slightly warmer) days. This March in particular brings with it signs of hope, with the government talking about the slow easing of lockdown, and the continued rollout of the CoVid Vaccines.

So “How are you?”

Please don’t be British and just say I’m fine. How are you really?

Personally the first lockdown in the spring and summer of last year, had some novelty value, giving us all time to step off the treadmill of life. It was great having John working from home and we went cycling in the evening as his commute home. This lockdown, with the long nights and record cold weather has been harder. Boris Johnson plans that this will be the last lockdown with “a cautious and irreversible easing of restrictions.” Which leads us back to thinking about going forward and hope for the future.

As we journey through Lent, as Christians we remember Jesus’ time in the desert, when he fasted for 40 days and was tempted by the devil. This was right at the start of his ministry, and immediately after his own baptism by John the Baptist in the river Jordan.

10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted[a] by Satan.

During Lent we balance Jesus’ temptations with our own self examination. Therefore this year as part of our own self examination, let us all think about what we have learnt about ourselves, families and villages during this pandemic. What things as we look forward do we want to drop/ stop doing, what things do we want bring with us, and what things do we need to allow to evolve?

At the end of Lent we celebrate Easter, when we remember Jesus’ death on the cross for the things we have done wrong, and celebrate his wonderful resurrection, our forgiveness of sins and the gift of new life.

As we we move forward through 2021, with the continued vaccination programme and hopefully therefore the easing of restrictions, what it you are most looking forward to doing? Personally, I’m looking forward to greeting people properly, not with a socially distanced wave, but with a smile (which isn’t covered by a mask) and a hug.

OUR CHURCHES NEED YOU Our Churches rely on the generosity of our congregations and our communities to support mission and ministry. Many people give regularly to our churches by standing order or direct debit but others give in cash when the offering is taken in a church service or when visiting the church.

The ongoing Pandemic has meant that People who would normally give in this way are not able to do so. This means that now more than ever it is even more important that those who are able to give are able to do so now, when our churches are in greatest need.

Foston News from the Pews

You will have seen from the Parish Magazine that our vicar Harriet has resigned from the Saxonwell group. Harriet's husband John is moving to pastures new and has been appointed Finance Director for the Oxford Diocese. We would like to thank both Harriet and John for their oversight of the Saxonwell Group over the last few years and to wish them both, and their family, every success in the future.

Tony Tucker our Rural Dean will have oversight of the Saxonwell Churches in the absence of a vicar but mainly it will be up to us to 'keep this show on the road'.

We will now be entering a period of uncertainty in our Church. The diocese as a whole is undergoing massive changes and reorganisation. What this means for Allington is unclear currently but consultations are ongoing and rest assured we will be taking part in all the discussions and meetings about this reorganisation and we will keep you informed as things become clearer.

The repair work to our Church is now finally finished and the workmen have left site. We would like to thank them for all their efforts in these very difficult times.

Below are the proposed service dates for Allington and the Group. We have to follow government guidelines so please keep your eye on the church notice board for further announcements.

'To Love and Serve the Lord' course: Advance notice The Diocese of Lincoln course entitled 'To Love and Serve the Lord' will be offered by the Loveden and Grantham Deaneries starting in June 2021. The course meets several needs. It's appropriate for those who simply wish to learn more about their faith; it provides a discernment process for those exploring a possible call to Authorised Lay Ministry; it provides the initial module for ALM training; and it's also appropriate for existing ALMs who wish to do a refresher course.

There are 16 sessions, which will be delivered on Thursday evenings (7pm to 9pm). The first eight sessions will run from 10 June to 29 July 2021 (inclusive), by Zoom. The next eight sessions will start on Thursday 9 September 2021, in-person at Grantham House, Castlegate, Grantham NG31 6SS. It will also be possible to join those sessions by Zoom. (Dates after 9 September have yet to be announced.)

The course leader is the Revd Canon Geraldine Pond (former Director of Vocations, Diocese of Derby); and the team of course tutors comprises lay and ordained ministers from a range of parishes. The diocesan Warden of Lay Ministry will be invited to attend a couple of sessions to meet participants. At the end of the course, she will engage in a conversation about 'what next' in relation to living out faith in everyday life or offering for a specific ministry.

A course book is provided to each participant, free of charge; and there is no charge for participation in the course.

Foston’s Women’s Institutes 100th Celebration

Foston WI 100th Birthday Celebrations, on Tuesday 9 February 2021 was supposed to be a day of wild celebration for Foston WI, as this was the date of our 100th Anniversary. On this day, 100 years ago, a Mr Ryder had provided the W.I. with a hut and chairs etc. The Institute repaid the loan, “as and when they could” (Mr Ryder’s words”) and was paid back from with donations and with events to raise the money. The land was donated for as long as the hut was on it. On the night, a dance was held to celebrate this memorable occasion.

One hundred years later to commemorate this special Centenary event, Foston’s St Peters Church, was floodlit. During the lockdown, our President, Kathryn Singleton, produced a lovely table cloth for the head table, together with a Banner. On this was a patchwork tree, which the members helped produce. The Banner is to grace the Village Hall in Foston; these were to be unveiled on the night of our celebration; that at least was the plan.

But nothing daunted our President and committee arranged to deliver a commemorative rose bush, to all our members. This was to be on the morning of our birthday, but as we were due to have snow on that day, the delivery was fortunately brought forward a couple of days. The rose was aptly named “We’ll meet again” and all the Members were delighted with their gift.

Due to the Covid Virus, planned celebrations were cancelled so on the night, those members who had the technology joined together, for 100th Celebratory Zoom Meeting. The President of Lincs South Federation, Liz McCintosh kindly joined us, with few members listening in by phone. During the meeting, we were honoured by ‘Her Majesty the Queen’, who briefly dropped by to congratulate us on reaching 100 years. We were then treated to a compilation of old and not so old photographs, with a few ‘Ooh’s and ahs’, especially seeing the hair Dos’ and Clothes!

Following on our President, Kathryn, then read snippets out of the previous minutes, over the decades which proved most interesting and enlightening.

After a game of Higher and Lower, run by Carole our Treasurer. Liz McCintosh then kindly presented us with our 100th Year Certificate, before asking us all to join her in raising our glass/or cuppa, to toast our W.I. The evening finished with a general chat, which was a much-needed morale boost for all members. We are all now looking forward to a great party to celebrate at some point in the future – and when “We’ll Meet Again!” in person.

ST JAMES VILLAGE HALL LONG BENNINGTON AGM MARCH 16TH 2021.

In these unusual times the open AGM normally held in the Village Hall in March is unlikely to take place in the normal format. However, as the Management Committee responsible for the running of the Hall is obliged to hold such a meeting, we are choosing to offer local residents the opportunity of joining a Zoom meeting.

This meeting will be held at 7:00 pm on March 16th 2021.

To ensure that this meeting is kept as safe as possible, those wishing to join the meeting are asked to register their interest by sending their request to my e-mail address. cedricjamesbradley@outlook.com.

Once I have details of all those interested I will send out an invitation by Wednesday 10th March to all via blind copy to protect e-mail addresses per data protection.

The Methodist Chapel A WAY OUT Dear All, We finally have a way out of the Covid-19 Pandemic. A number of vaccines have been produced and are now being distributed around the world to combat the virus. There are all kinds of estimations as to how effective the vaccines are but the fact is, they will work to reduce the effects of the virus. The more people that are willing to have ‘the jab’ the better it will be for the general population. Our government is now optimistic about starting to relax the restrictions in the near future. It might take a while but eventually we may be able to get used to the new normal. There are so many things that we have missed because of the virus and the accompanying lockdowns, that we hesitate to look forward to the freedoms that we will have. We may even have to live with the coronavirus for many years to come. Despite our frustration, we are very grateful for all those who have worked to get the vaccine to the stage it is today. We are indebted to our NHS workers and those doing essential work. We have endured a difficult year and I hope we have learned so much from it. Lessons that we can put into practice in the coming months and years.

I cannot help thinking that the coronavirus is like sin. Sin is easily passed on to other people by the way we live our life. We get angry and express that anger, and someone else gets angry and expresses that anger to someone else, that’s how ‘road rage’ develops. We are selfish, and other people respond to our selfishness by keeping what they have instead of sharing. We are ungrateful, and so we teach others to be ungrateful. What possible drug is there to combat our fallen nature? The ‘drug’ is love, God’s love, and the only way it works is if we are willing to have this ‘drug’ injected into our lives. Just like with the vaccines we have to be in a position to receive it, we have to purposefully want God’s love, God’s Spirit in our life. It doesn’t cure us because we are still in control of our life, we still have to make the decisions and take responsibility for them.

But the more we allow God to influence us the more God’s love will show through in our life. The other thing to point out is that it was Jesus who took the poison into his life so that we could be set free. When Jesus died on the cross, he claimed the ultimate victory over sin and death. We may have a pathway out of the Pandemic and we also have a pathway out of our selfish nature. Not everyone is willing to have the vaccine and not everyone is willing to submit themselves to God. In the end it is our choice.

Long Bennington Medical Centre Covid Vaccinations:

We have been working closely with the Primary Care Network (PCN) vaccination team and are happy to say that almost all of the first 4 cohorts, 80+ and housebound, 75-79, 70-74 and the clinically extremely vulnerable cohort of patients have either had their first vaccinations or are booked. The PCN and Practice are working hard on the next group of patients bit by bit and Text messages are sent on our behalf to those patients who have consented to receive such messages. If you have a smartphone you can click on the link and book your own appointment.

At the Practice end of things, we can see a Dashboard that shows us who needs to be manually booked (no mobile phone or text consent given) or those patients who have not yet booked and the system is therefore awaiting a response. The team here can then focus on contacting these patients to get their appointment booked. Please note, availability of appointments is based on vaccine delivery dates. If you would like to consent to receiving text messages then please contact the surgery.

Nicola our Care Coordinator, together with Beverley and Liz our Practice Nurses have been out in the community to vaccinate housebound patients.

We understand that things change very quickly and really do appreciate it if those patients who have access to our Facebook page and website can pass on any information to friends and neighbours who may not have access to social media – thank you for helping to spread the word!

Some top tips to get the best out of askmyGP: •

Generally the system is set to accept requests from 07:00 am to 12:00 noon Monday to Friday (we do have to occasionally close early if we receive an extremely high volume of requests in order to practise safely). This may seem quite a short time for the system to operate, but in order for the GPs to manage their day effectively they need time to set up mini clinics for patients who need to be seen face to face, check blood results, read all their incoming post and process all the referrals for that day in order to ensure patients receive the appropriate treatment/advice in a timely manner. If you do require medical advice after the close off time of 12 noon and cannot wait until the next day please do contact the medical centre on 01400 281220.

If you regularly see the same GP then it is advisable to request that GP on a day when they are working (unless you consider the matter urgent for that day). We, like you, prefer continuity of care wherever possible.

Please be really clear in the subject heading as this helps the GP to see clearly what the issue is. We know you don’t get much space initially but you can be more descriptive in the next section.

Please be really clear on the timescale for your request, if everyone puts asap or urgent it’s not really helpful in effective triage. If you know your query isn’t urgent it would be really useful for the GP to know that they can contact you in a day or so or by the end of the week.

The GPs will ring the number you have specified or that we have on our system.

They never know what their workload will be like and cannot guarantee exactly when they can ring you. We are sure you appreciate they have urgent issues, emergencies etc. that throw the days plans completely.

Long Bennington Parish Council Parish Council meetings are still happening, and Councillors have resolved to continue to hold our meetings remotely until further notice. If you want to join one of the meeting via Zoom, please let me know.

Councillors have discussed the Flood Alleviation Scheme again and the revised plan for a Long Bennington scheme now expected to commence in either March or September 2022. Scheme layouts are now being investigated.

Lincolnshire CC is consulting locally on a proposed cycle lane that provides a link between the village and the existing cycle lane that runs on the eastern side of the A1 northwards towards Newark. The proposed scheme will also include parking restrictions in the immediate area. Further details are available on the Parish Council Facebook page or at http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ trafficorders. Please call me if you need help with accessing the information. Councillors were advised the vaccination programme is working well in the County, with two large vaccinations centres now open. At the time of the meeting, it was confirmed 80% of 80-year-olds having received their first vaccine and over 70s now being contacted. If anyone has transport issues relating to attending a vaccination centre, there is a HELPLINE 0345 4564474.

Planning: S20/0669 Smith. One mobile home and one touring caravan for a traveller.

In view of lack of action, the Chairman and District Councillor Wood had a meeting with representatives from SKDC regarding the unauthorised traveller site. It has been indicated that SKDC will be looking to approve the application, suggesting it would be for a limited time and personal to the applicant in a move to restrict use by other travellers. The Parish Council still regards this as unacceptable site for any type of development and will be reiterating objections to the Development Control Committee, in addition to airing concerns over the poor processing of the application by the Planning Department.

S21/0127 Land at the rear of the Royal Oak Pub. The Parish Council has been consulted on another application for development of land to the side and rear of the Royal Oak public house.

The application is for 15 properties (regarded as major development), with access through the pub car park. The application hasn’t yet been discussed by the Parish Council and will be on the agenda for the meeting on 1st March. If anyone has any views of comments, please submit them to SKDC direct or to the Parish Council.

DOG FOULING – sadly, there is an increasing amount of dog poo in and around the village. Dog owners/walkers, please pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste in your dustbins or the litter bins on the footpaths in the village. Please remember, the riverbank is also a footpath and so same rules apply!! Let’s looks after our lovely environment for the enjoyment of others as well as our own……….

Long Bennington Village Produce Association (Gardening Club) We did it! We held our first meeting on Zoom on 26 January and learnt lots from Geoff Hodge about gardening on clay and the shrubs and plants which do well on a clay soil - very relevant to all of us in this area. Inevitably we had the usual Zoom problems and it took us a while before all of us were ready to go - but it was worth it in the end.

We are not going ahead with a March meeting - the speaker we had booked is very hands on and a talk on Zoom would not have worked well - so we are postponing him until we can really enjoy seeing him in person. We are however going ahead with our Spring Show on Saturday 27 March in the same way that we held the Summer Show last September - ie entries on tables outside your home or on tables in front of the Methodist Chapel. News from the Pews Congratulations to Sam Wade for putting Sedgebrook in the spotlight with a full-page interview in the Grantham Journal of February 5th entitled “How a village came together to cope during Covid times”.

One of the many activities and challenges was a Matchbox Challenge. The attached photo shows Marion and Mike Hubbard’s collection which earned them third place.

Markham Community Museum – congratulations to the museum on being chosen for the Co-op Community Champions Grant.

Thank you to Ian McKay for all his work on the application and to all those who voted for us.

We have been selected to be Community Champion in the Grantham, Springfield Rd area from Sunday 7th March to Saturday 5th June 2021. Based on previous fundraising, we anticipate joint Community Champions will receive around £500. The main fundraising comes from members – every time a member shops and uses their dividend card a donation will go to their local Community Champions. In addition, money is added to the pot from carrier bag sales, collection boxes, event days and colleague fundraising.

This should help us install CCTV to protect the church and Museum, ready to return to daily opening as well as putting the last of the T H Beale collection safely on permanent display, and possibly go towards creating a guidebook etc.

Re-opening of the Church - We had hopeb make Easter weekend a joyful re-opening of the church as we return to daily opening from 10am-4pm. There will be new museum displays including a fascinating new photo of the Old Rectory courtesy of Mike and Sybil Hubbard as well as village history past and more recent. We also look forward to the village history group being able to begin once Covid is under control.

Sadly There will be no services in March On Easter B_w Qervice at 4pm

Prayer If anyone would like to spend time in the church for private prayer we can arrange this.

Alternatively, we will be praying daily for the community, our keyworkers and all those working for the relief of those suffering because of the pandemic, those who feel anxious or isolated. We would be pleased to hear from you if you have someone you would like included. We are happy to give anyone a call who would like someone to talk to.

Book drop The church has an amazing selection of books/CDs/DvDs – all quarantined for 72 hours. We cover just about everything from a large selection of the latest thrillers and detective stories, fiction and biography of the fascinating and famous, poetry, gardening, wildlife, history, travel– you name it!
