Five-board Bench In this class, the young woodworker will gain confidence and skill learning their way around the woodworking studio. Shop safety, fundamental types of joinery, finishing techniques, and more covered in the class. Class project will be a customizable 5 board bench. Materials: A $45 materials fee is due to instructor on first day of class. Introduction to Wood Turning Enter the magical world of woodturning! Learn the tools, techniques and processes of turning wood on a lathe. Emphasis will be placed on SAFETY, using a roughing and spindle gouge, and developing skills through practice and finishing several projects. Class size limited to four students, so there will be plenty of individual attention and lots of hands-on practice. Materials: A $30 materials fee is due to instructor on first day of class. Black and White Film Photography Teens will be introduced to both camera handling and basic black-and-white darkroom practices. After getting familiar with your camera functionality, practice framing, composition, color, and lighting, while exploring the world around you through the lens of a camera. Touch on learning how to digitally modify your photographs. No experience necessary. Portable 8GB USB storage drive required. DSLR Camera preferred. Point and shoot loner cameras available. Creative Writing & Letterpress Printing Students will do some guided creative writing experiments. Creative Copper Jewelry Explore jewelry fabrication techniques like sawing, soldering and polishing copper while you create several copper jewelry pieces such as earrings, cuffs and pendants. Work with wire, tube and sheet copper. Learn to texture and color copper and design unique jewelry for yourself or friends. We’ll add beads and embellishments if you’d like, or create sleek modern designs if that’s your style. Materials are included in the fee. 1016. Making Digital Comics - Workshop Learn techniques for planning and creating comics digitally. Familiarize yourself with Adobe Photoshop as well as digital tablets for illustration. Learn about different formats for comics and platforms for publishing them. Then learn of the positives and negatives for different file types, printing methods, and lettering techniques. Middle school students from Carter G. Woodson discovered the power of creating self-portraits in a short photography workshop taught by local artist and teacher Diana Greene. The young women gained the skills to compose and create portraits based on clearly seeing what they see, how they see, and understanding how to translate their vision using a camera. Experiencing the creative process from wonder to exploration to refinement provided students with an opportunity to dig deeper, penetrating beyond the surface of a snapshot.
