12039. Printmaking Explorations * You will be introduced to the world of printmaking. Concentration will be on making one-of-a-kind prints using layered inks, found objects, and drawing, painting, or reduction methods. You will be introduced to several printmaking methods and explore different papers and inks. Students may produce a dozen or more different prints! All levels encouraged.
12020. Comics, Graphic Novels and Manga Explore comics as an art form by developing your own characters and stories. Class projects will emphasize the fundamentals of visual storytelling and comics. Learn the principles of page and panel layout, character design, story development, penciling, inking, and basic printing and publishing techniques through in-class demonstrations and exercises.
12050. Printmaking on the Press * This class is designed to using methods specific to the printing press. You will be using special cutting and inking tools, water-soluble inks on Plexiglas as well as textured wood boards to produce colorful and unique monotype prints as well as multi-copies of your own drawings and designs on fine papers.
12045. Drawing Observations The artist must train their hand and eye to see. We will focus on simple, yet amazingly effective drawing exercises for improving your observational drawing skills. Through both short and long drawing exercises, and using a variety of approaches and materials, strengthen your approach to drawing and improve your art skills across any medium.

DIGITAL ART & VIDEO 12052. Visual Storytelling: Basics of Video Production Discover the foundations of effective and creative visual storytelling. Learn how to compose shot, basic approaches to cinematography, storyboarding, and video editing and post-production using iMovie. Leave the class with two to three short videos as well as resources to create a basic video for commercial, fiction, or non-fiction purposes. Students should be prepared to work in a shared lab setting. Digital Mash-up: Studio Art and Photoshop Exploring intermediate techniques in Photoshop, students will incorporate digital processes to create drawings, paintings, collages, and/or other “hybrid” works of art that mix analog and digital processes. This is a course for art students who want to push their creative skills in new and modern directions. In Photoshop students will learn about a number of advanced techniques, including different ways to create animated GIFs; layering and masking techniques; how to effectively use tools such as the magic wand and clone tool; how to create customizable color swatches and brush tools; and how to automate processes. 12041. Installations: Yarn Art Design, create and learn the process of yarn art installation. GLASS 12011. Stained Glass * Explore the beautiful art of stained glass by creating designs in colored glass and copper foil or lead cane. Learn the basics of cutting and grinding and the intricacies of effective design and use of color. 12010. Fused Glass * Fuse colorful glass pieces together by firing them in a kiln to create unique items like earrings, pendants, ornaments or sun catchers. 12036. Enameling on Metal * Enameling is an ancient process where glass is fused to metal through heat. It is a beautiful way to add color and make your pieces pop! Drawing for Beginners and Beyond Adult Camp A drawing course for those who feel they cannot draw but have always wanted to learn, as well as for those who want to practice or learn new approaches to drawing. A variety of mediums will be explored, including pencil, charcoal and ink. Observational and realistic methods will be taught, along with imaginative experiments with composition. 400. Introduction to Figure Drawing from Life Using a variety of mediums and approaches, the class will draw from the nude figure. The class is taught for all levels, though some general drawing experience will be helpful. The poses will consist of very short “gesture” positions as well as longer still ones, with the teacher demonstrating the approach and medium first, then helping individuals one-onone throughout the class. Some basic drawing materials will be provided, but students may bring their own specialized materials as well. 4772. Intro to Drawing Workshop: Different Ways of Seeing - NEW Draw what you actually see and not what you think you see. This means slowing down and paying attention to every subtle angle, every shape that is happening. It’s very easy to generalize when starting out with drawing, but just generalizing will not get you to an accurate representation of a 3-dimensional object. Instead of drawing a banana by placing curved lines next to each other because you know that is what a banana looks like, stop and take yourself away from the object and look at exactly how those curved lines are behaving. You’ll see that it’s different from what you were assuming, and the latter looks more like the real thing. 4970. Still Life Painting - Bring the Garden into the Studio Learn to create still life paintings that will bring the garden into your home. There will be a special focus on a strong block in of large shapes, how to keep flowers clean and transparent, how to mass in leaves as a design element and how to move the viewer’s eye around the painting. Introduction to Printmaking This introductory class will cover multiple printmaking techniques, including intaglio, relief, monoprint and embossing, while covering supplies and studio practice. 401. Multi-block Woodcut In this special woodcut class up to three of the same size wood boards are used to cut different but somewhat related designs. Each board is then inked in a different color. Prints are made by combining any two to three boards printed on a series of papers through a press. Color-blending, transparent-layering, and special effects using natural woodgrains will be explored. All inks are water-based and clean-up is easy with soap and water. Popular Print Seminar Returns! How Did They Do That? A print lover’s guide to: intaglio, etching, drypoint, softground, aquatint, woodcut, lithography, chine colle, screenprint and all things in between! With Artist Terry Schupbach Gordon In this seminar we will look at many original prints from the 15th century to the present, examine how the marks were made and where it all fits in the wonderful history of printmaking. We will talk about the difference between “original” and “reproduction” and how you can tell the difference. In addition to talking about and looking at prints, we will make marks and print them in order to illuminate for you the mysteries of the printed image…Try your hand at turning the press or wiping the plate. If you want to know how to tell a drypoint from an aquatint, or an engraving from a lithograph or if you want to understand why a print looks the way it does and where it fits in the history of art and culture, this seminar is for you. 4116. Screenprinting Workshop Create your own limited-edition artwork on fabric or paper while learning about screen printing. Artist Woodie Anderson walks you through the design and printing process and shows how some of the tools and techniques work. Students will create a non-photographic stencil and print from a screen using the screen filler negative method–a method you can easily use in your own home using safe, non-toxic materials. Bring a t-shirt or pillowcase to print on, if you’d like. Printmaking is a wonderful art form that is accessible to all levels. 371. Natural Dyes 101 Camp Create a wonderful array of colors on fibers using natural materials. This class will explore natural dye techniques and different mordants on protein and cellulose fibers. We will use dye plants that you can grow, collect in the area, or purchase. While creating beautiful colors we will discuss why using natural dyes over synthetics is important. Each student will build a swatch book with test and recipes to continue using natural dyes at home. Beginning Tapestry Tapestry is an ancient form of weaving that has been practiced by diverse cultures around the world to make wall hangings as well as functional articles such as rugs, blankets, canopies. It is a weft-faced weave, meaning that the weft, or horizontal threads, completely cover the warp, or vertical threads, and pictures or designs are made by building up areas of different colored wefts, often based on a drawing or cartoon. You will learn several different methods of juxtaposing colors and then design and weave a small tapestry incorporating those techniques. Some supplies will be provided. 5135. The Beauty of Moving Metal - Cold Forging for Jewelry Cold forging is forming and shaping non-ferrous metal with the use of hammers for the creation of jewelry. Explore forging techniques to create elegant forms that make the most of these techniques. Demonstrations include workhardening, temper, annealing and tool prep. Use nu-gold or other non-ferrous metal in round wire or rod form and learn to transform it by forging. Some preliminary shaping is done with pliers and hand shaping. There will be demonstration of techniques and forms to forge, and lots of hands-on practice. Past students are encouraged to attend again, as Ben has added new techniques to this weekend of jewelry forging. A tools and materials list will be mailed prior to the workshop. 5162. Loop-in-Loop Etruscan Chain Workshop Create this beautiful chain from wire requires minimal equipment and can be done at home, once you learn the basics. Take fine silver wire, wrap a dowel to make a coil, cut individual links, and fuse them closed using a torch. Then assemble the links into a chain. Includes silver wire. 1118. Healing and Horses Horses allow a person to be aware of all of his or her abilities, emotions and strengths at once. Horses often mirror human emotions through touch, breath, and energy and will allow connection to occur immediately. Just being around horses can change human brainwave patterns and create calm and focus. Sawtooth students will have the unique opportunity to work with horses at Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center, combining hands-on time with the horses followed by a personal art experience and meditation on the farm. Students will work with the horses through the guidance of Laura Pallavicini, program director and certified PATH Intl. instructor and equine specialist. Then you will create your own personal art based on your experience with the horses. We will create meditative art in the mediums of photography, drawing, and writing. In the last 30 minutes you will have time to process the day’s experience with Amanda Sullivan, counselor and Sawtooth’s Healing and Wellness Through the Arts coordinator. No experience with art or horses required and all horse activities will take place on the ground with no riding. 1121. Conceptual Photography for Self-Expression Conceptual photography is the execution of a carefully pre-planned idea for a single photo or group of photographs. It can be used to create a unified body of work or as a means of self-expression, working through a particular emotion such as grief or fear. This unique workshop utilizes both in-class assistance and independent study to guide students through the process of developing a photographic idea, finding creative ways to explore and present the concept, then reconvening to show our completed projects. Our first class will be an exploration of conceptual photography and how we can work through both positive and darker emotions through our photographs. We will then have 5 weeks on our own to work on our projects, assisted by weekly emails and tips. 1126. Beginning Mindfulness Meditation Practicing mindfulness through meditation is a great way to alleviate stress, re-focus goals, and create meaningful art. 598. Modern Outdoor Bench This modern bench will be created using a box joint configuration. Its robust design and joinery makes it an ideal outdoor bench for the batio or poch. A combination of power tools and hand tools will be used to prep lumber and complete this project. Day one works towards one large glue up, and then flattening, sanding, and finishing will be done the following day. Open to all skill levels, but some experience with power tools is preferred. Open Wood Studio Open Wood Studio is designed for the experienced student who wants access to the specialized tools and equipment available in the studio, and to enjoy creative shop time with others! 575. Birdcarving This carving class introduces the precise art of carving birds out of wood. Learn the use of power-carving tools (flexible shaft tools), burning tools, bird anatomy and other techniques while creating the bird sculpture. Class open to beginning to advanced students (intermediate to advanced students will refine their skills). A $20 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the first class session. All necessary
carving equipment available in the studio for use; students may also bring a Flexshaft and attachments of their own. Summer’s class sculpture is a beautiful Gold Finch. Class limited to 8 students. 590. Beginning Lathe Turning 101 This is a beginner’s introduction to the tools, techniques and processes of turning wood on a lathe. It’s also great for those who have just begun lathe turning and want more guided practice. 593. Introduction to Bowl Turning Explore the art of bowl turning! Covered are the use of a scroll chuck for mounting and reverse mounting a wood blank to complete a bowl, the techniques involved in using a gouge on the interior and exterior of a bowl, and finishing on the lathe. Students should have some experience turning spindles using spindle gouges. (“590: Beginning Lathe Turning” above meets that requirement.) 9716. Sharpening for Turners There is a direct relationship between sharp tools and quality woodworking. Bring your dull tools to this workshop and learn how to sharpen them and keep them sharp. Instruction provided on using the Wolverine system on a high speed grinder, and using a slow speed grinder like the Tormek system. Learn the techniques to sharpen gouges, parting tools and skews; as well as the different grinds and bevel angles used for turning gouges and why they are used for different types of turning. 9720. Learn To Turn - Let’s Make a Pen! No experience necessary! Get started turning by creating a pen. Start at the beginning with material selection, preparation, turning and finishing. Learn how to use a bandsaw, drill press and lathe to create your masterpieces. Shop safety is a must. All tools and materials included in class fee (but feel free to bring your own tools if you are sure they are sharp). Every project will be unique! PRIMITIVE WEAPONS 570. Making Wood Arrows – The Art of Fletching The traditional art of making arrows has always been highly regarded and the Fletcher has an important place in history. Fletching principles, skills and materials are easily understood. Students will make several arrows in different styles and have the option to create a final project showing their best effort in materials of their choosing. Materials charge paid to the instructor (likely $40 or less). 5572. The Continuing Bowyer Open to previous primitive weapons students, the ‘Continuing Bowyer’ provides studio time to work on unfinished bow projects or maybe to start a new one. Instructor Dane Snodgrass will be on hand to provide his expert advice regarding bows, arrows and all aspects of the bowyer’s art. Students will have full use of the wood studio’s equipment and are expected to provide their own materials; bartering and sharing encouraged. WORKSHOPS 9719: Drawing with Fire: Pyrography (Woodburning) A Hands-On Introduction This is not woodburning like you may have learned in scouts! Pyrography (woodburning) is very detailed, similar to a pen and ink drawing, yet easy to learn. If you can trace lines, you can create beautiful drawings using this burning technique. In the morning learn about different types of equipment, basic pen tips, safety, selecting and preparing your wood, transferring a pattern, coloring and finishing. After a break for lunch, spend the afternoon creating a pyrographic masterpiece on wood. Class fee includes materials and class project. (Students can bring their own variable temperature woodburning equipment and pens to the workshop.) Classic Weapons: The Atlatl As course instructor Dane Snodgrass says, creating an atlatl – a transitional weapon between the spear and bow and arrow - is a very “Neolithic” introduction to both woodworking and a classic primitive weapon. At the end of the workshop, students would have a historically correct, functioning primitive weapon. With a little practice, “they will be able to kill that saber tooth tiger in their backyard.” Atlatl and spear kits for building the weapon are covered in course fee and provided in class. Youth Scholarships Youth scholarships are available based on need. A written recommendation for the scholarship must come from a classroom teacher or qualified professional, and a parent or guardian. Please direct the scholarship application with recommendations to the youth program coordinator. Parking The parking lot across Spruce Street for the Milton Rhodes Center is a self-pay system that takes credit/debit cards and cash but does not give change. The lot is owned and operated by The Arts Council of WSFC. Please be aware that you have other parking options such as at a meter on the street (25 cents per hour) and on numerous other pay surface lots and parking garages within one to two blocks of the school.
