I am surrounded daily by women showing me what is possible and that with the right support ‘impossible’ is no longer an option. I have never felt more empowered!

But, I've also reflected upon one of the challenges that I had growing up - that I never knew this path I now follow was possible for me.

I never considered a career in a trade, motorsport or even a business. I saw politics as a mens' game.

I didn’t see the knowledge I had as something I could share. I thought I was too young to start my own business - and saw no other women doing it. I thought success had to be about university, money and stuff. I didn’t know that I could support my family doing something I love.

So, this issue brings us all of this and then some. Shining a light on our state's incredible women.

Not just the women mainstream media focuses on. But the women in your backyard. In your local community. The ones quietly breaking glass ceilings. The ones following heart-driven purposes. The ones who are kicking stereotypes to the kerb and embracing empowerment of all.

The everyday heroes that kick more inspirational butt than Wonder Woman.

At SA Woman, we believe that all women across South Australia should have the opportunity to be seen, be empowered and soar. It’s my heart-on-fire purpose and mission.

ou can’t be what you can’t see.

This sentence has been on repeat in my mind over the last year. As I reflect on my own journey through life and business and as I meet and hear the stories of other South Australian women, I am constantly reminded of the opportunities that are out there for us in our wonderful state.

A state filled with empowered women is an incredibly exciting one!

And, this magazine is just one way we can make that happen, one way we can make a difference so all girls and women can see that - if she can, I can too.

We hope you love this issue, as much as we loved creating it. This is just the beginning of a whole new chapter for South Australian women.

For Emily Riggs, there really is no place like home. Merging her love of fashion with the merino wool that's grown upon her family's property in Burra, she wouldn't be anywhere else. In this candid chat, Emily tells us about the tragedies and sliding door moments of her childhood, to realising her childhood dream, to the pinch me moment with Mia Freedman and launching her collaborative collection with Catriona Rowntree.

ello Emily! Thank you so much for taking some time out with us. We loved having you on stage at the SA Woman Awards last year and getting to you know you there. But for anyone who hasn’t come across you, can you please tell us about Iris & Wool?

Can you take us back to the start, what were the moments & realisations that led to you starting this beautiful business?

Everyone has their own story and their own sliding door moments. Mine happened on the cusp of my tenth birthday.

I was laying in a hospital bed with my family when the doc delivered some life changing news.

I was diagnosed with NHL – Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Not many 10 year olds would know what this meant but I did because my Mum was in the battle of her life with breast cancer.

The first thing I said was “Oh no, I don't want to lose my hair!!”

That day the unthinkable would happen: Mum and I would fight cancer together.

Mum died a year later when she was only 43. It was a horrible time. I had lost my Mum, I was so sick I could barely leave my bed, I struggled at school, and I did end up losing my hair.

I was often mistaken as a boy and this really shattered my confidence. It was then that I turned to fashion. It was a creative outlet for me and a way for people to look beyond my illness.

I didn’t always nail it - hello jeggings with a sparkly midriff at our year 7 social! But, looking back I think this was when the first seeds of Iris & Wool were planted.

Years later, I found love with Tom, a fifth-generation merino sheep farmer.

Together, our family runs 15,000 merino sheep across our 100,000 acre property in Burra, South Australia.

Emily's collaborative collection with the much-loved Catriona Rowntree also introduces a unique “wheat stitch” — a subtle sartorial nod to the husbands of both Catriona and Emily, who are both farmers.

In 2019, after welcoming two children, I founded Iris & Wool and finally realised my dream to design, merging my love of fashion with merino wool.

‘Iris’ is in honour of my mother’s favourite flower and five per cent of every sale is donated to the McGrath Foundation to provide ongoing support to people experiencing breast cancer.

I want to ask you about the highlights so far, but can I firstly say a huge woohoo and congratulations for partnering with the amazing Catriona Rowntree to launch a new collaborative collection! I’d love to hear more about it!

So good! What other highlights have really made your heart soar since being in business?

Mia Freedman was another pinch me moment. I saw her do a social series on skinny jeans so on a whim, I sent her my jeans as well as a jumper and gloves. She posted everything on her own channels and the results of showcasing my goodies were phenomenal - she really is the definition of an influencer. I had like 2,000 new followers and 100 orders. It was incredible.

SA Life - I worked with the fashion editor, she put my name forward to the editor and they chose me and my kiddies to be part of the family issue.

We got the cover story and the most beautiful images to keep forever.

I can imagine that living in country SA would bring with it, its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. What do you love about it and what have you had to find ways around?

I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else, we are so blessed and only a 2-hour car ride to Adelaide!

It’s a beautiful environment to bring up our two kiddies. I guess the only frustrating thing is postage and the time it takes to get somewhere or get to me.

Winter is just around the corner and I feel like there will be nothing better than feeling cosy, warm & beautiful in Iris & Wool!

What are the styles and trends that are coming to us in the cooler months?

My AW22 has arrived and is available to purchase via my website or stockists scattered across the country.

Women are a driving force in motorsport.

In a testosterone-fuelled industry, more and more women like Courtney Tyler, Co-Founder of JAM Motorsport, are finding their way to shine - on and off the track.

Our Head of Showcasing, Jess McEachen, is a lover of fast cars from way back, and was super excited to take five with Courtney to talk about the challenges she's had to overcome, the array of opportunities that now exist within motorsport for women, as well as Courtney's role as a Champion for Girls on Track. ello Courtney! As someone who has loved watching motorsport for years (and I’ve got such fond memories of heading up to Bathurst), I’m super excited to be chatting with you!

Can you take us back to the start - tell us how you came to be Co-Founder of JAM Motorsport? And, has motorsport always been something you’ve loved?

Firstly, I'm super delighted and honoured to be asked to be part of the SA Woman Q&A – thank you!

To be honest, if you asked me five years ago if I thought I would be running a race team, I probably would have said “no”!

My background is Executive Assistant & my partner is a Mechanical Engineer, having been around motorsport for the best part of 10 years. With his

experience and my experience, it seemed fitting to start our own race team. My partner makes the cars “go fast” and I do everything outside of that (well most things!).

I grew up with four brothers, however we weren’t hugely immersed in motorsport. It has only been the last eight years that I have really immersed myself. I am still quite “new” to the industry – I have A LOT to learn! But I love it. Which is lucky because motorsport can be quite demanding (long days, nights, weekends, public holidays), so you have to be passionate – lucky for me, I am!

It must be a pretty epic gig being the Race Teams Operations Manager! What do you love most about what you do?

My job is very cool – I love it. I love all the people that make our Jam family what it is. We are super

lucky to have amazing clients who are our drivers and of course our staff and team of crew, because without them our business is not possible. I love being around our drivers, staff and crew on race weekends and test days.

We are lucky to travel to racetracks all around Australia and the vibe on race weekends – it’s something else! Although it can be stressful though. Like...I stress my drivers are going to hit each other on the track! Thankfully they are VERY good and have so far, avoided each other!

Absolutely awesome to see you representing as the driver of the only fully female team in the 2021 Adelaide Rally out of over 400 cars. What were the highlights for you of those 3 days?

There are too many to mention, however finishing is definitely a big one! I was actually on a rally stage and my mat got caught under the accelerator pedal - can you believe it! I immediately thought there was something wrong with my car…but no, it was just me!

To drive in a rally was also a highlight – something I had never done before, which was very cool.

Another highlight was having Rosina Laucke as my navigator too – she is very experienced, and I learnt a lot from her.

But, I have to say though, I was a bit surprised to see you were the only fully female team as I thought there would be more by now. As far as being in this maledominated industry, what are some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Yes, Rosina and I were the only full female team, which I must admit I was surprised about because there are so many excellent female rally drivers and navigators!

I think the main challenge is if my partner is around, men automatically go to him. I may not know all the “technical” things to do with a race car, however being around cars I pick up the basics, so sometimes I may have the answers. ⁄ 16

“TO BE HONEST, IF YOU ASKED ME FIVE YEARS AGO IF I THOUGHT I WOULD BE RUNNING A RACE TEAM, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE SAID NO!" I must admit though as time is going on, I don’t see this being as prevalent, my drivers / clients now call or text me for updates on their race car!

And, then on the flipside, what are the opportunities that women have in motorsport? Where do they thrive within this space?

There are opportunities EVERYWHERE. Women may not see it, but having been in the industry for five years now (still not long in the scheme of things!), I see it.

Women can thrive in whatever they choose to thrive in, whether that be driving a car, navigating a car, being a mechanic, engineer, reporter, journalist, Category Manager or like me, a Race Team Operations Manager.

My advice to any woman is draw upon your strengths, find what you’re good at and go for it! And, if there is a role that you would like to do that you have not done before, back yourself, read, study, reach out to people in the sport

For Courtney, it is such a privilege to be a Champion for the Girls on Track program and she's planning to do it as long as she can. To help young women and girls feel supported, with someone to reach out to as they find their place in the industry.

You received such a beautiful nomination for the SA Woman Awards last year in the Backbone category. I love that you mentor young women who are interested in getting into motorsport, and that you volunteer your time for the Girls on Track program.

What do you love most about doing this?

I did receive a nomination and thank you to those beautiful women who nominated me, also to my referees – it was very humbling.

I love everything about being a mentor to young women. From meeting the girls and women, to having them come into my workshop for work

experience and joining me on race weekends.

It is so rewarding personally for me seeing a young girl or woman enjoying themselves in an industry they may have felt they could not enter.

For me, when I started, I struggled to get my head around the motorsport industry, and I don’t want that for young women or girls – I want them to feel supported and feel that they have someone to lean on or reach out to. It is such a privilege to be a Champion for the Girls on Track

program and I will do it for as long as Motorsport Australia will let me!

For any women reading this who are itching to get involved in motorsport, what are your biggest pieces of advice? #1. Back yourself and #2. Volunteer! Honestly, that is how you get a lot of exposure and experience in different roles in motorsport.

Reach out to your local car clubs (visit the Motorsport Australia website for details), because they are always looking for volunteers to assist in various roles. It is via these roles you can meet people in the industry and make a lot of connections.

My inbox is always open for any women and girls too – so do not hesitate to reach out to me and I can point you in the right direction.

The motorsport industry is full of lovely people, ready to welcome anyone to the industry!

And, can we finish on a plug for your region – for any of us coming to the race track or heading to Tailem Bend, what are the must sees and do’s?

MUST get your coffee from Little Local Co in the main street of Tailem Bend (the coffee is AMAZING!). MUST have dinner & a cocktail at the Rydges at The Bend Motorsport Park.

MUST stay overnight at the racetrack (super cool waking up almost on the race track). MUST try the Go-Karts or have a hot lap at The Bend.

However if you love the water and a little relaxation, you must stay at The Floathouse at White Sands (20 minutes’ drive from The Bend) it is a floating tiny home on the Murray – delightful!

There is more to Zima than meets the eye, tell us about your bigger mission.

The vision is to promote health, resilience, and empowerment for a better future. Zima active wear is the engine that supports our bigger vision to help and promote education where it is needed. A percentage of our activewear profits go to our Zima foundation which is supporting children in Burundi with school necessities. The goal is to expand in the near future in countries in Europe and Asia.

What has been your biggest challenge so far in bringing Zima to life.

I would say finding a manufacturer that would put as much passion and care into making the products as I did in designing them.

You have been working and studying while creating Zima. What is one tip you have for someone else trying to juggle 'all the things?

Determination - everything is possible when you are determined.

My name is Claudine Niyonzima. I am 22 years old, born in Tanzania and raised in Burundi. I am a graduate Nurse from University of South Australia, and I am an entrepreneur founder and CEO of Zima and Zima foundation. It's exciting to see the political landscape change, with a growing sisterhood in SA parliament. We spoke to MPs Olivia Savvas and Rhiannon Pearce to get a window into their world and be inspired by their journey as change makers. interview by JESS M CEACHEN

ello Olivia and Rhiannon - congratulations on your recent election wins! Thank you so much for being happy to chat with us and share more about your journey as a woman in politics in South Australia. We’re excited to hear more about you!

Without being too blunt, I feel like entering politics isn’t everyone’s idea of a fun time! I’d love to know how you’ve come to be a State MP. Was this something you dreamed of as a school girl, or has the drive to become a politician come to you more recently? What were key points of your journey that brought to you running in this election?

Olivia: I come from a long line of fierce, opinionated women.

Each one of them has been a single mum, worked insecure jobs, lived in insecure housing, and fought against domestic violence, addiction and sexual abuse. I first got involved in the Labor party as a teenager. For me, I felt I’d been given ⁄ 21

the ability to speak out for kids growing up in situations like mine. I got involved in the Labor party as a teenager and I’ve never looked back.

Rhiannon: Thank you so much. To be honest I give credit to my country roots. I grew up just outside of Port Pirie and saw firsthand how important it is to have a strong local community.

It’s easy to fall through the cracks, and without support it is so hard to get back up on your feet.

I wanted to do something about that, which led me to study economics at University. I wanted to understand how our country works and what needs to change to make it fairer for everyone.

I continued to follow that path, which inevitably ended up with me putting my hand up to run for parliament.

I can’t imagine it’s been an easy ride either!

What are some of the hurdles you’ve had to overcome? What has kept you moving forward?

Olivia: There are campaign pressures for all candidates, but even more so for young women.

There’s constant scrutiny on our outfits, our ages, and for those with children, their child-caring arrangements. Lots of our female candidates have also dealt with inappropriate comments and attention from people online.

For me, a huge support in that has been Rhiannon.

Not only can she relate, but she’s always there to remind me why we do what we do – to make it slightly easier for the women next in line.

Rhiannon: Whilst an absolutely rewarding experience, it isn’t without its challenges. It is an industry that has traditionally been set up by men for men - and while there has been progressive change, there is still a long way to go.

For any young girls or women who are contemplating a career in politics, what pathways do you recommend? What are the best pieces of advice you can give them?

Olivia: Get involved in the youth wing of your political party! All the major political parties have a branch for young people to get involved.

On our side, Young Labor are the lifeblood of our campaigns – they put in blood, sweat and tears to form Governments. It’s an incredible way to get involved and understand elections, but also a way to make friends for life. The friends I made in Young Labor aren’t just my colleagues, they’re my family.

Rhiannon: One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was ‘you can create just as much change from the outside as you can from the inside’ – so don’t ever feel powerless.

Follow your passion, get involved and engage with people on the issues that matter most to you, your friends, your family and your community – because together you can get the results you desire, and be part of the change you’re seeking.

Most of all, believe in yourself and put your hand up!

It’s exciting to see more and more women holding seats within SA parliament, and helping change the face of this maledominated environment. What excites you about being part of this change?

Olivia: What’s most exciting to me is the women themselves. Each and every one of the new female MPs is a brilliant advocate for their community, incredibly hard-working, funny, smart and strong-willed.

On our team, Erin is a powerhouse Mayor who turned around the City of Onkaparinga. Nadia is an incredible foster mum with the biggest heart of anyone you’ll ever meet. Sarah is a true boss-woman, who’s spent her entire career advocating for working people. Cathy has a heart of gold – she’s committed her entire life to community service, particularly in the CFS. Lucy is the hardest working person I’ve ever

Women supporting women. This is a core pillar of all we do here at SA Woman. From the outside looking in, the women in Labour appear to stand side by side. How would you describe the energy of the team and what’s it like to be part of this growing sisterhood?

Olivia: You couldn’t be more correct. We have a wonderful culture of women supporting women in the Labor party and that’s been amplified by seven since the recent election!

At the election, there were seven new female Labor MPs elected. We speak every day, providing advice and support and answering each others’ questions. This week we had our first girls’ dinner since the election which was the best night. The aim is to continue them regularly, no matter how busy we are!

Rhiannon: It is absolutely incredible, and something I would have been lost without. Each of us has a different story, purpose and motivation – and that is what has made our sisterhood truly special. We recognise each other’s strengths and potential and we helped each other get to the finish line, together.

But it is also important to recognise the women who aren’t joining me in Parliament. I have been fortunate to have had strong women building me up throughout my journey.

The women who fuelled my fire and told me I can, the women who built me up and shared with me their skills and knowledge, and the women that gave me strength when I most needed it.

These women I will forever be grateful for.

Now clearly, life isn’t about all work and no play! What do you love to do most in your time away from work?

Rhiannon: So true – it is about balance, and looking after your own wellbeing, which we as women so often put to the side.

On weeknights you’ll find me playing netball for the North-East Zodiacs. It was something I made time for during the campaign that was time just for me. The cherry on top was being part of an absolutely great team with some amazing women.

On weekends, when I’m not ferrying the kids to sports or working, I like to make time to walk some of our amazing trails in the North-East – Cobbler Creek being one of my absolute faves.

We’re heading into the cooler months here.

What are your favourite parts of South Australia in Autumn & Winter?

Olivia: I love the Adelaide Hills in Autumn, particularly! On the Eastern side, I love to go to the Matilda Bookshop in Stirling as the leaves are falling. Closer to home, lunch at the Inglewood Inn next to the fireplace is my favourite!

Rhiannon: Something I love to do every Easter is camp with my family. One of our absolute favourite places to do so is at Punyelroo, which is not too far from Swan Reach.

We have an 80's camper trailer which the kids love, and I just can’t wait to wind back and enjoy a good book or two with a glass of red – this year I am packing ‘The Nurses’ War’ by Victoria Purman.

Lastly - looking into the future…what legacy would you love to leave behind for women to come after you?

I’ve spent my working life helping people – and now am a Member of Parliament for my local community. I’m focussed on listening to and working with the community to deliver what matters most and am determined to be a strong voice in State Parliament.

Olivia: It’s incredibly important to normalise the role of women in politics. It’s my hope that eventually, young women will see politics as a normal career goal – one that’s accessible to all genders and ages!

Rhiannon: I want to make their path easier, not just for those who want to be a Member of Parliament but for all who are striving for a seat at the table – wherever they may be.

I want to ensure workplaces are safe, secure and inclusive, irrespective of the industry.

And most of all, I want women to feel heard.

I’m Belinda Stiles, 4th generation owner and Dealer Principal of Rosenthal Automotive and Riverland Mazda. We are located in Berri but we aren’t your typical country dealership! We’re here for those that want the best of both worlds when buying their next car. Country family values and service, combined with everything you’d expect from a modern metropolitan dealership.

I also founded Easywheels in 2018, which at the time was South Australia’s first car subscription business. I’m a big believer in being able to offer everyone options that truly suit their needs, and sometimes those needs require flexibility that the traditional car buying framework by traditional

“Family-owned since 1908.” Wow!!! There’s just not many people who can say their business has been around for over 110 years! What does it mean to you today to be carrying on the business and does over a century in business shape your approach to business at all?

I’ll be honest, at first I did feel quite a lot of pressure that I had to carry on the business because it was the ‘right’ thing to do.

before taking on the business, because I’ve never wanted the stigma of our customers and staff thinking that I’m only running the business because it was handed to me and not because of my abilities - especially being young and female.

Now, I imagine that being in a family business and working alongside your wonderful husband must bring its share of opportunities and challenges! What are your favourite parts and are there any downsides?!

At 22, I left the family business after only 18 months to work for 3 other dealerships, before landing a role at CBA in their graduate program, then moving to ANZ as a Branch Manager and later Premium Banker, then moving to my ultimate goal of being a Relationship Manager for Esanda.

Wow, great question!

I had my own career for 10 years outside of the family business and it was the best thing I ever did. And, although it has come with its fair share of stress, heartache and sacrifice, I can now say that we are the only generation to have entirely bought out the family business in our own right, and for that I am incredibly proud.

Our business has evolved and changed so much since 1908, and it will continue to do so. The car industry has experienced (and will continue to experience) unprecedented levels of disruption over the past 5 years.

Our business has survived through 2 world wars, the great depression and now a global pandemic and I put that down to carrying on strong family values of trust, honesty and loyalty that drive repeat business.

In 1908 my great grandfather advertised himself as ‘the reliable man’ and that still underpins what we do today. ⁄ 28

So many people say they could never work with their husband, but Andrew and I have such a great working relationship. We met during our time on the CBA graduate program, and we were both trained in the exact same way which I think helps a lot. We both think very similarly and we also share the same values.

We are two very different personality types though – our first proper conversation was discussing our DISC profiles, to which I took one look at his opposite curve and said to him ‘wow, you mustn’t be able to stand me!’ We both had a laugh, but I think our differences is what makes us work. I really enjoy working together and I wouldn’t change it.

As for downsides, we are both driven people and we haven’t really learnt how to switch off, so work often comes home with us. We also struggle to take leave. I think the hardest part though was navigating through family succession over the past 10 years. Family business can be exceptionally hard and navigating through family succession without a plan is not for the faint hearted.

In this past 2-5 years, you’ve become an incredibly skilled pivoter – with not just a pandemic to cope with, but Holden shutting their doors and so much more. Your toes must be sore!

What has been your approach to needing to make change - are you always on the look out, or has it been fortuitous timing? And also, what do you feel you’ve learnt about crisis management?

All we want is some precedented times, amiright?!

On February 17 2020, at 12:06pm, everything changed for us. Losing our Holden franchise mid agreement with no warning that we had held since 1946 was a crushing blow, and it taught me so many lessons that I didn’t want to learn. I’m such a trusting person, and that day along with everything that followed afterward from Holden taught me that you really can’t trust anyone. To this day I still find this the hardest thing to come to terms with.

I remember reassuring our staff that they will still be paid and it will be business as (un)usual until otherwise advised by the government. Keeping everyone calm when we all felt anything but was important. Keeping calm in a crisis is not something that comes naturally to me, but I think the overwhelm of watching the world shut down when our world had already been turned upside down with the Holden announcement turned the logical side of my brain on.

One of the things that I took away from my time at CBA was how the CEO was planning 5, 10, and even 15 years in advance. I’ve always tried to think one to two steps ahead and pre-empt things and try to have contingencies in place.

It’s safe to say absolutely no one pre-empted a pandemic, let alone how things would change from day to day, but due to our forward thinking we had already been working for the previous 8 months to completely change our customer’s buying experience so our customers could purchase cars ⁄ 29

In the weeks that followed as the pandemic started to reveal itself, I was on autopilot whilst in shock.

In those days the song ‘Three Little Birds’ echoed through my head on repeat and I turned days into hours and sometimes hours into minutes and just focussed on the things I could control in that time to get through to whatever was next.

It was a hugely time consuming and expensive undertaking and at the time there were only 2 or 3 very big dealerships offering this in Australia.

On March 1 2020, we launched our brand new rosenthals.com.au website where customers could transact entirely online, including seeing 360 views of the inside and outside of all of our cars. Who would have thought this would be our only way to transact just a few short weeks later?!

In May 2020, the phone rang and on the other end was an opportunity to open an Ironman 4x4 & Outdoor store. I’ll be honest, I’m not particularly passionate about suspension and swags, but it turns out my husband and staff are, and I love problem solving. So began our next huge change, the planning and funding of a huge renovation to accommodate (another) brand new business. Plus everything that goes hand in hand with starting a whole new business.

I look back at the last 2 years and what we’ve achieved in spite of everything, and it feels a bit surreal.

We’ve lost a franchise and weathered the legal storm that followed it, started Easywheels, had to find a way to buy out my brother when he unexpectedly quit in September 2020, taken on a Thrifty franchise and had that revoked mid agreement as well, then rebranded it to Sixt in November 2021. Plus we’ve had to purchase our premises so we could renovate and expand to accommodate Riverland 4x4 & Outdoor, in that time had 1/3 of our staff turn

over all whilst juggling one of our twin daughters going through childhood cancer.

Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time leads to being in the right place in the right time. What I’ve learned about the past 2 years is that everything happens for a reason, and trust the timing. Always be looking long term, and about what you can control in any given moment.

Plus there is an extremely stubborn streak in me, and I find it difficult to give in.

I’ll never forget the first time I met you at the 2018 SA Woman Awards, where you delivered an absolutely jaw-dropping speech about what it meant to be a woman in your industry, and how you’ve been treated at times. I was gobsmacked, although sadly, also not surprised. Can you sum up what it’s been like to be a female business owner within such a testosterone-fuelled industry? And, what are changes you’d still like to see?

I think Kim Kardashian actually said it best in her recent Vogue interview. “Ït’s like a racehorse that puts on blinders so they can see clearly and straight.

You’ve got to just be that racehorse, put on those blinders, and go. And, if you start trying to see to the right or left of you, you’re going to trip up.”

Being a woman in a male dominated industry doesn’t matter. I’ve been praised for my professionalism for not trying to be one of the boys, or pulling the damsel in distress card.

I’m just me, I can’t be anything else and I don’t want any special treatment for being a woman. I want my achievements to speak for themselves in the professional sense.

I’d love to see more women in key roles in the industry, I think we have so much to bring to the table and offer a different viewpoint and a different way of doing things. But in the meantime I’ll keep speaking up about the things that I believe in, and the great thing is that at a corporate manufacturer level I feel respected and heard and that’s all that I can ask for.

Can you also take us back a step – what was it like for you to make the shift from a career into self-employed? Was there a particular moment you knew it was time to change? And what has

been the biggest differences for you?

My journey to self employment didn’t happen in the conventional way, and the timing was largely decided for me when my Uncle and Dad retired in 2013 and 2016. I actually said no when my Dad asked me to move back from Perth in 2012 to rejoin the business, it was Andrew that talked me around as it was he that wanted to explore being self employed. People often say that I only work so hard because it’s my own business, but that isn’t the case. I’ve always given 110% to my job because I see it as a reflection of me.

I miss being given instructions as much as I enjoy forging my own path and making my own decisions.

I miss being valued for doing a great job as much as I enjoy seeing a plan come together. I miss not having to solve problems as much as I enjoy being able to problem solve. I miss the security of a salary as much

The other big one is whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.

as I enjoy the (relative) flexibility. I miss not having to worry about staff as much as I enjoy building my own team, and most of all I miss not having huge financial and legal responsibilities as much as I enjoy knowing the sky is the limit as long as I work hard.

For anyone who’s thinking of making the leap into business, what’s your top piece of advice?

My top piece of advice would be know and truly understand your ‘why’. Always honour that and surround yourself with stakeholders/staff/ suppliers that align with your core values, even if it costs more. Bigger isn’t always better, especially if it means compromising your ‘why’.

That and start by starting, and back yourself!

Goodness, where do I start! I actually have huge social anxiety, though I’m not shy and the first thing that struck me about SA Woman is how immediately safe I felt turning up to an event on my own. I love the inspiration I feel after every connect event, it’s intoxicating and renews my sense of purpose if I’m feeling unmotivated or a bit lost.

Watching and listening to women live out their passions inspired me to start Easywheels, and every time I hit a brick wall (which was often at first!) I knew there was a community that had been right there at one point or another that I could reach out to.

Sometimes just being part of something is all you need to do great things, and for me SA Woman is everything that is missing from my everyday business life that can be quite the boys' club.

Small business drives our economy and women empowering women to live out their passions is such a rewarding thing to be a part of, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Lastly, being a Riverland local through and through, can we get the inside tips of where we have to go or what we have to see when we’re next there? (Best kept secrets are welcome!!)

Gosh there are so many places, so many great SA Woman businesses to support as well! Most are well known must do’s, but for me I think the best kept secret is actually our National Parks. Getting off the road and exploring the Murray River is just the most relaxing way to spend a weekend – there are so many great sandbars to pull up a houseboat, or camp on the river's edge and spend a night or two in nature with no-one else around.

n mid-2014, after 15 years as a diplomat in Canberra, Beijing and Hanoi, I moved to the Barossa with my husband and two boys.

event was a coffee morning. I’d been thinking about starting my business and was keen to establish some local networks outside of my day job.

Fast forward to today, and my copywriting business has just turned three. I think I am finally feeling like it is a success – based on my terms. I’ve stopped trying to justify my decision to leave my diplomatic career to run a small solo business. What I’ve also realised is that I’ve created a business that means I don’t have to wait until I retire to have time for family, community, myself and new hobbies.

I joined up as an SA Woman member straight away, still not convinced about my business, but I loved the energy in the room and the diverse group of women.

The winding road to copywriting

My second event was a dinner in July 2019 to celebrate and SA Woman member milestone. It turned out to be a catalyst for a huge change. Shelley Cox arrived, having just signed a lease on what would become Workspace Barossa. I went for a tour the following week and was her first paid-up member.

When we moved to the Barossa, I completed a Masters in Arts and Cultural Management, then tapped into my previous experience to run a trade consultancy helping local businesses understand free trade agreements. But it wasn’t the right fit.

SA Woman has continued to provide great networking opportunities to make some local business buddies, many of who I now consider friends.

It’s also been exciting to introduce other friends and clients who have started business.

So, for the next few years, I worked for a local winemaker. Working in a small family-owned business, doing anything but winemaking, provided the opportunity to develop a widerange of small business skills.

I think one of the best things about SA Woman is the diversity of members, businesses and industries. Start-up to established, city-based and rural, young and old, small and large (both turnover and people). Seeing such a range of businesses has provided both inspiration and encouragement.

Then, it was only when a blog I wrote about my son’s teeth being photoshopped went viral, I explored feature writing and soon discovered the world of copywriting.

For the first couple of years, I was happy for my business to stay small. I felt like I’d already had my ‘big career’, and that copywriting was something that would bring in some dollars and keep my brain working until I could focus on writing fiction.

But in the last year, I’ve decided that maybe I do want to build something bigger. I now appreciate there is often no end point or final summit to climb. The longer I’m in business and following the journeys of other successful people, the more I realise this is just a normal part of business.

Working for myself and having control over how my business operates and grows really is one of the most amazing things.

Barossa life – more than just business Eight years on and I can definitely say the decision to move here was the right thing to do. I’m an active member of the local community as a board member of Foundation Barossa and a member of both the Tanunda basketball and hockey committees.

I think the Barossa is a fantastic place to start a small business, especially as a woman. There are great programs like the B2B initiative, amazing coworking spaces like Workspace Barossa and a really supportive network of local businesses.

While Covid has had many downsides, one positive has been the realisation that people can work from home effectively, meaning I can work with clients anywhere in the world, while still making the most of all the Barossa offers.

1. Tell us about your business and when you started.

I started my business in 2019 when I was 6 years old. I was already making soaps and candles and then mum asked me “Amalia what do you want to be now?” I told her everything I already am but add fashion designer.

So I created a collection called African Heritage that I also model. My business is a social enterprise that puts profits into schools we built in Kenya.

2. What do you love most about having a business?

I love earning my own money to spoil my horse and paying profits forward to kids in Kenya. Mum teaches us the Barefoot Investor model of money, so we have 3 envelopes. Splurge, Smile, Give. I use splurge for my stuff, smile to save and reinvest and give goes to the kids in Kenya.

3. What is ONE thing you have learnt.

It’s not all about getting the money it’s about the impact you create for other people.

Aaliyah is seeding and leading a campaign to eradicate period poverty from Korogocho, a large slum in Nairobi.

Aaliyah has created a job for one lady and is on the way to her first 1000 sanitary pad packs for girls in our community.

The intention is to keep girls in school even when they have their period.

1. Tell us about your business and when you started.

My business started in 2020 when I was 16. We run a dance troop in Kenya and when I found out girls were not attending lessons because of their periods I decided I could do something about that. I started a Little Lunch concept where I would talk at lunches my mum’s friends organised and they would donate. I also designed my own colouring in books to sell. We now provide work to ladies in Kenya who make washable sanitary packs, give menstrual health education and have given thousands of girls the chance to stay in school even when they are menstruating.

2. What do you love most about having a business?

My business is all about creating impact. I get videos and photos every weekend of girls in Kenya saying thank you for changing their lives. It is very humbling shows me how much impact one girl can make to the lives of other girls.

My business is called Designs

By London and I sell handmade beaded bracelets, phone charms, earrings and rings. I started Designs by London because I had seen tons of other people doing similar things on TikTok and they inspired me to start my own business.

2. What do you love most about having a business?

I love making people happy and packing their orders! I always add some extras to each order, because I just love the idea of someone opening their package and getting a little surprise.

3. What is ONE thing you have learnt.

I have learned how to create TikToks and run my own social media channels. In April I was lucky enough to have a stall at Gillies On The Grounds, and that was the first time I have ever done a market for my business. It was an excellent learning experience.

I have also learned how to create unique packaging for my orders and how to manage my Etsy store.

This is the time we have dreamed of for two years. There is a huge buzz of excitement in the travel industry right now. We have this new sense of freedom and life is moving forward again. It warms my heart and brings me so much joy to be able to reunite my clients with family and friends and also make people’s holiday dreams come true. Finally. written by HOLLY VELARDO

T

he pandemic hit my family hard, as it did everyone’s, with my husband and I both working in the travel industry. We did whatever it took to support our five children, and took whatever work we could.

My first trip to Sri Lanka was in 2018 when I was invited to attend a Famil (familiarisation trip). This trip was sponsored by Ceylon Roots, one of Sri Lanka’s top destination management companies.

I believe everything happens for a reason, so during the pandemic I decided it was time for me to build my business as much as possible. I spent a lot of time educating myself in all areas such as business management, social media, marketing, systems and processes, and so much more.

My husband and I fell in love with Sri Lanka so much, that six months later we returned and brought our five kids with us.

The first few months of the world opening up was extremely challenging as there were so many entry requirements, forms to fill and travel exemptions required.

Thankfully these are lifting every day, and more and more places are now available to travel with few or no restrictions.

My family and I are so thrilled to be travelling to Sri Lanka in May. This will be our first overseas trip in two and a half years!

I have created a very close relationship with Ceylon Roots and sent many clients to Sri Lanka, all who have fallen completely in love with this beautiful country.

Both times we travelled with a private driver, allowing us the freedom and flexibility to see Sri Lanka at our own pace.

We were met at the airport and assisted with money exchange before being transferred directly to our hotel. It’s such an easy and stress-free way to arrive.

This island paradise is rich with culture, has stunning beaches, delicious food and the most welcoming and kind people. The diversity of activities available in Sri Lanka makes it the perfect destination for anyone.

The temples are breathtaking, and with Sri Lanka’s long and rich tradition of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian religions, you are spoilt for choice.

One of my favourites is the Dambulla Cave Temple, a Buddhist temple consisting of five cave temples carved under a huge overhanging rock. The walls and ceilings are painted entirely with Buddhist designs.

Sri Lanka is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, giving you an abundance of choices to study their history. These sites include the ancient rock fortress Sigiriya, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Galle Fort, and The Sacred city of Kandy.

You can catch waves at the famous Arugam Bay or Hikkaduwa if you love surfing. Or just relax on one of their gorgeous beaches, such as Passikuda, Bentota or Mirissa. Maybe with a cocktail in hand.

One of the most memorable experiences was hanging out of a train from Kandy to Nurawara Eliya, like the locals do.

We were travelling through the most beautiful scenery of tea plantations and waterfalls. It was breathtaking. Locals jumped on board at every stop to sell you hot peanuts and fresh mango.

The wondrous wildlife was everywhere we looked. We visited an elephant transit home and saw hundreds of

We visited a turtle conservation centre, where you can hold baby turtles who are just a few days old. They care for eggs that have been rescued from the beaches, as well as turtles that can’t be released back into the wild due to injury or disability.

Oh the food, I cannot say enough of how delicious and fresh the food is in Sri Lanka. We loved stopping at road side stalls to get king coconut juice and rambutan.

Taking a cooking class is a must. We were able to pick our own fresh ingredients from a private garden and learnt to cook a traditional Sri Lankan curry. We love to make it when we’re hosting, and it’s a great way to bring stories and culture back home.

I have had so much interest and demand in Sri Lanka in 2022 that I have decided to personally host a small group tour later this year. There is no better way to travel than having an expert on the trip with you.

ne of my passions in travel is to truly experience the local areas. Sure, there are local touring companies, or even international ones, that have local guides, with special experiences on a local level, that allow you to have that level of local connection and stories.

Then there are the one-on-one experiences, whereby you get to have one person at your fingertips, to show you 'their' hometown, or village, or wherever it may be.

When I was in Miami for a Cruise Conference, I decided to do a couple of local walking food tours, run by local residents. Miami, due to its location, has a large demographic of Cuban people, and sections of the city, especially near to Miami Beach, have many Cuban cafés, restaurants, ice creameries, bars and more. We started out near the memorial for the Bay of Pigs and learnt about the Cuban/USA history of that time, and then started our food quest.

The knowledge gained, and the personal experiences of people met along the way, was brilliant, and precious. We also rolled all the way back to our accommodation, bellies full of delicious Cuban treats.

the way you organise your home.

We have all had a pretty interesting couple of years, to say the least! Whilst we have been so busy concentrating on other things, our homes have been slowly morphing into a space we might not even recognise anymore. But with the change of season in the air maybe it is time to rethink our homes, our stuff and the way we organise. So let's get back to the basics and hit the reset button on our space.

T

he first thing you'll want to do is recognising your organising style. If you look on social media you are pretty much guaranteed to see the same pretty organising styles over and over again. The problem is everyone's brain works differently so what is right for one person might be unworkable for someone else.

Here are some signs that you have the wrong type of system in your home: » You find it hard to put things away. » You can't find what you are looking for. » You get overwhelmed when looking for things.

You are not lazy or unorganised, you just haven’t found the RIGHT system for you.

So, rather than forcing yourself to use a system that isn’t right for you, take some time to figure out your basic organising preferences.

Discover your preferences There are generally two types of people: Hidden organisers prefer to have their belongings put away out of sight and to have a visually simplified space.

Visual clutter, especially surface clutter, will often make them feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Using drawers, cupboards with doors, and containers/baskets that are solid (rather than clear) are preferable for this type of organiser.

Note: Just don’t forget to label!

Visual organisers prefer to be able to see everything at a glance and find visual abundance pleasing.

When things are put away they are often forgotten about or become difficult to find.

In this case using opening shelving, vertical wall spaces and clear containers (usually without lids) would be a better option.

Note: most kids are visual creatures so picture labels are a must.

The other consideration that needs to be accounted for is if you work better with detailed or open categories.

A detailed category might look like file-folded tea towels in a divided drawer. Alternatively an open category could be the same tea towels just thrown in the drawer, no folding or dividers required. Both ways are organised but I can guarantee your brain is freaking out about one of them. This is a good indicator that that is not the category for you!

Finding the right system for you doesn't have to be scary or expensive Start playing with things that you already have in your home and test them out for a few weeks. If it doesn’t work, no big loss, try something different!

Once you figure it out then you can start upgrading to organising products that suit your style.

more space?!" Well, when it comes to organising, the simple fact is you are restricted by the size and shape of your home.

Whilst you can utilize clever organising tools (which might gain you some space) you really do need to accept the space that you currently have and start working with it and not against it.

Here are two tips on how you can start embracing your space: » Take a realistic look at your belongings and start decluttering until they fit comfortably in the space that is available. Yeah I know it hurts.

But is shoving things you don't really need back into your overflowing closet really making you happy? » Use the principle of prime real estate and place frequently used items in best and most accessible locations. This is usually at eye/chest height for most people. Belongings that are rarely used e.g Christmas decorations should be stored out of the way, in harder to access spots, as they are only used once a year.

Once you start accepting your space for what it is and actually using it wisely you will start to notice a difference in your home.

1% is better than 0% One of the biggest mistakes you can make when organising your home is to do nothing. To make no decisions and to take no action.

"I don't know what to do with this so I'll figure it out later."

"I can't finish it now so why bother starting?"

"I don't know how to organise this space so I'll just leave it."

What happens is that all of these delayed decisions and inaction lead to clutter accumulating and stuff just being shuffled from one spot in your home to another.

Now you don’t have to re-organise your entire space in one go. In fact, unless you have help, I would recommend you NOT doing that.

What I do suggest is to break it down into more manageable tasks. Small wins really can add up and by completing these small tasks you are building your decluttering muscles!

So, for example, if you are currently struggling with your wardrobe, think to yourself what is going to make the most impact today? Maybe it might mean that you start by: » picking up your floor-drobe and putting a load of washing on » decluttering and re-organising one drawer in your tall boy » going through one section of your hanging space and deciding what items you really love and enjoy wearing and what you are willing to let go of If that is all you manage today that is great! It was better than it was when you started. And, if you feel like you can continue then that's also great. Keep the momentum going!

Note: Just remember to finish off each task to completion (rubbish in the bin, items put away, donations to the front seat of your car) before you start in another area. This will prevent you from getting into a big mess that you can't finish.

Now is the time to change things up Just because you've always done things a certain way doesn't mean you should continue doing it

that way. Especially if it is not working for you!

Start to take notice of the stuff around your home. Where are the pain points in your home and what is actually causing the problem? Is it that you don't have the right systems, do you have too much stuff for your space or are you not using your space effectively? Once you have figured that out, what can you do today that will improve the situation? No matter how small the action: progress = progress.

One last reminder - you won't always get it right the first time and that's okay. Just play with it, try new things and eventually you'll discover what really works for you.

Styling Game Changers Now that we are heading into the cooler months, it’s a good time to take stock of what you have in your wardrobe. Doing a wardrobe edit is a great way to see if any pieces might need updating, also to identify any ‘gaps’ or items which could be added to make your look current for the new season.

hen working with my styling clients, I always create a shopping list to use as a guide. This not only helps you to remember what items you actually need but also can save you time and money.

To help you get your wardrobe ready for the cooler weather, these are my top 3 styling tips for effortless outfitting this season. Happy styling!

1. HAVE YOUR BASICS COVERED Your basics are the workhorse pieces in your wardrobe which are worn on high rotation for both day and night, work and play. I usually recommend keeping to neutral colours with these items, it makes it so much easier to mix and match and create multiple outfits.

Autumn basics usually include dress pants (one light and one dark pair), denim jeans, a skirt, a dress which can be dressed up or down, a blazer, denim or leather jacket, a cardigan or coatigan, and a coat (trench or a heavier weighted style).

2. LAYER LIKE A PLAYER Layering in cooler weather is a game changer, it is also one of the things I’m asked about the most by my clients.

The key to wearing layers without feeling bulky or restricted by too much fabric is to consider your fabrics.

Wearing shirts and tees in natural fibres is a good start, and choosing fine knit sweaters and cardigans works well. A knitted vest is one of this seasons’ big trends, this can be worn over shirts and tees, as well as under jackets and coats quite comfortably. If you are a bit of a hot-bod like me, a camisole top is another great layering piece to have in your arsenal. Layer under a blazer, cardigan or jacket for a dressy-casual look.

#1 FIND ‘THE’ COAT

M

y first tip for heading into the cooler months is to find yourself ‘the’ coat. ‘The’ coat is your go-to piece, the piece you don’t even have to think about, the one that seamlessly goes with any outfit and most importantly the one that makes you feel not only warm but makes you feel amazing when you wear it!

Why a coat, not a jacket? A coat has length and will come down over your hips whilst a jacket will stop at hip length. Which makes a coat much more versatile, and will be something you'll find yourself using time and time again. I currently have three coats that I literally wear on repeat during the cooler months - a gingham trench, a long black puffer and a wool dustcoat.

The dustcoat is great as it has no sleeves and can be layered over jumpers, shirts, and jackets.

There are a couple of reasons I choose long coats, they form part of an outfit, they give great coverage so are perfect for all body shapes and they’re also perfect for layering. No matter what you currently have in your wardrobe, it can all be worn with your coat, I guarantee it.

Depending on the weather you can pop a tee underneath and for really cold weather we can layer over jumpers, hoodies and even another jacket.

There’s nothing better than layering a coat over a hoodie exposing the hood, teaming with a comfy pant and your favourite sneakers to complete the look.

#2 ADD A POP OF COLOUR TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR DAY

S

ome of us fall into the trap of wearing darker, somewhat drab colours during the cooler months and whilst yes, I agree dark clothes absorb the suns heat and keep us warm, but they also have the ability to dull an outfit and sometimes our vibe. So, adding a pop of colour can certainly brighten up your day!

You don’t have to use all the colours in the rainbow at once, but you’ll be amazed at how one colour might brighten up your day. An allblack outfit can look amazing with a pop of colour. A black pant with black longline knit teamed with a green puffer vest is one of my go-to winter looks, of course finished off with some green leather feather earrings.

Accessories are another easy way to add a pop of colour, whether it be a neon pink shoulder bag, a coloured beret or even a pair of multi-coloured sneakers, when you find what works best for you, you’ll be amazed at how it will make your outfit feel a bit brighter and more exciting.

#3 BREAK THE RULES!

T

oo often I hear from clients and close friends that ‘I couldn't wear that in Winter, it’s a Summer dress’ or’ I think I'll be too cold if I wear that’ and they deny themselves of wearing their favourite piece or outfit during the cooler months just because their following ‘the rules’.

My third tip is to break the rules!

If you’re heading out and really want to wear a special piece or outfit, but it dawns on you that the piece you were thinking of you would typically wear in the warmer months...go for it, break the rules.

Wear that maxi skirt that you love, but to keep a little warmer wear nude stockings underneath with your boots, no-one will even know!

Go on, wear that neon pink blazer that you purchased in summer and layer it over a long sleeve tee or even better still invest in some merino undergarments to see you through.

Don’t NOT wear something that you know feels amazing on because you’re ‘following the rules’. Break them and wear what you feel good in, despite the season! Set yourself a challenge this winter and break some rules by wearing pieces that in the past you’ve felt they shouldn’t or couldn’t be worn in the cooler months!

With the cooler days creeping in, it’s time to make the transition between seasons, refresh your wardrobe and bring your warmer options into the spotlight. Here are my top 3 styling tips to keep warm, maximise your outfit options and reduce the impact on your pocket and the planet. written by JO PUPLETT

1. MASTER THE ART OF WEARING LAYERS My favourite item for timeless, everyday layering is a lightweight, fitted top. It’s a wearwith-anything, essential basic and perfect as the starting point. It will go with just about everything from pants, jeans and skirts or layering under a dress, jumpsuit, vest or knit.

From ¾ sleeve to full length, classic neutral colours to bright patterns, these beauties will be in your wardrobe for many seasons so go for the best quality fabrics you can buy. For extra comfort and warmth try a lightweight wool.

Layer up with jackets, cardigans, scarves, hats and anything that drapes over your body that can be removed and still looks great. For a slimmer look stick with finer layers rather than bulky knits.

Top Tip: When layering check in the mirror to make sure your outfit still looks complete and put together when taking off any piece.

2.WEARING SUMMER DRESSES WITH A TWIST Get extra wear from your summer dresses by adding a t-shirt or basics top underneath, pop on a jumper, denim jacket or cardy, paired with sneakers or ankle boots for a casual look. Elevate your look with heels and blazer. For cooler days add leggings and a scarf for extra warmth.

Top Tip: If your jumper is too long, tuck it up under your belt or tie a knot in the front. For knits use a hair tie to from the knot. ⁄ 62

3. EMBRACE YOUR PERSONALITY THROUGH YOUR STYLE Clothes can have a huge impact on the way you feel from the inside out. Bring out your happy vibes by wearing what makes you feel comfortable in styles, colours and textures that you love. Experiment with new looks by shopping pre-loved fashions. It’s a great way to play with new ideas and creative pieces at affordable prices.

Top Tip: For outfit inspiration make a Style Canvas; a collection of pictures, fabrics, patterns and colours you are naturally drawn to.

I create wearable art for a living, and I love it.

The SAW community is inspiring, and so I felt pulled to these colours because of what they now represent to me. A group of women empowering one another. We need that. Now, I’d love to be able to make enough over time, for many of us to be able to wear and feel a special connection to.

M

y wearable art comes from an authentic heart. It has meaning, it has a purpose and it brings happiness. I am obsessed.

When I create my art, my inspiration is usually drawn from the colour palette. If I see a few colours together that I instantly love, I record that and use those colours to create my own magic.

Perfecting a highquality resin finish is so important to me, I live for that glossy clear dome.

I’d love to paint big, but I need to scale it down so when I cut it up, it’s even across all the components.

I’m a lover of leopard, I crush on pink and I’m all for teal. I don’t go with the seasons, I just do what I love.

I am really loving how this first SAW artwork has turned out, the resin just finishes it so well with the rose gold foil.

I can’t wait to paint more!

Over the past 10 months I've been working hard towards a new studio. I’ve never had such a big space to call my own and I'm so proud to have a brand new, inspiring space. I’ve been in this business for 3 years; working from a tiny, cluttered room as well as the tiny dining table.

I’ve cried a lot - it’s overwhelming to think that I’ve built this business from nothing. I’ve earned this, and I deserve it. My business is growing!

Over the next couple of months, I’ll also be focusing on creating fun digital textiles, these will also include my hand painted art. Opening a new chapter that could involve clothing and other accessories is exciting. The sky’s the limit.

like to use a body scrub every few days on my arms, hands and legs to remove the dry skin cells and allow for the new cells to regenerate, while the base oils essential oils provide a nice subtle layer of oil to the skin to provide hydration. I follow up with a luxurious body butter to nourish and intensely hydrate my skin.

The ultimate self care ritual is having a nice warm bath with essential oils and magnesium (Epsom) salts - while burning scented candles in the bathroom, of course! It’s not only great for hydrating our skin but also fabulous for our mental health – allowing time for relaxation.

Using magnesium salts is great for detoxing your body and acts a muscle relaxant, which contributes to stress reduction by relieving muscular tension.

Adding essential oils to your bath can have different holistic benefits, depending on what your needs are.

Here we are! Already in the middle of Autumn and heading into the cold months of Winter.

So, how can we navigate the Winter months with good health and keep our spark alive? Today I want to share with you how important your digestion is for your vitality and keeping you Sparky through Winter! written by JACQUELINE ILES

I

work with many women who strive to be well. They eat good food, take supplements and yet still experience less than optimal health.

Most experience disturbed digestion from gas and bloating to acidity, constipation or loose bowels, lack of appetite and heaviness or discomfort after eating.

When ignored, and over time, these mild initial messages from our body, develop into more serious issues such as IBS, leaky gut, SIBO, or chronic constipation, inflammation, arthritis, osteoporosis and hormone imbalance.

In our Western culture we are taught to treat the symptoms, rather than the root cause. We take zinc for immunity and acne, B12 shots for anaemia, magnesium for cramps, psyllium for IBS and ashwagandha for anxiety.

Unfortunately, no amount of supplements, superfoods, herbs or home grown organic veggies will help if your digestion is imbalanced!

#1 Start your day with drinking one to two mugs of warm to hot water.

Adding lemon juice helps to alkalinise your system.

Hydrate to support good elimination and clear your physical, mental and energetic channels ready for your day!

#2 Eat only when you feel hungry, not out of habit or boredom.

Easy in theory right!

Many of my clients have forgotten what true hunger feels like and eat when they can fit it in with their schedule.

Eating without having the enzymes, your Agni, ready for digestion, creates poorly digested food sludge which clogs your channels and tissues, promotes inflammation, lethargy, headaches and perpetuate the cycle by impairing your digestion.

Ayurveda teaches that a primary cause of disease is poor digestion.

So, get curious about when you’re actually hungry!

Try sipping herbal tea, or hot water in between meals, to clarify if you are hungry or not.

With good digestion we naturally enjoy more vitality, less inflammation, less heaviness, stronger immunity and good mental functioning.

#3 Eat more warm cooked food and less cold and raw food.

With good digestion everything works better!

Think of it this way… every cell of your body takes in nutrients, digests it, and gives off some waste. Then the cycle repeats.

Every cell of your body has its little own digestive process.

When your central digestive capacity in your Gut, called Agni in Ayurveda, is working well then all your little cellular Agni’s in all the systems of your body function well too.

This creates well-nourished tissues and organs, glowing skin, good metabolism, mental focus and clarity, and balanced hormones and cycles.

With good digestion you digest LIFE well too, rather than feeling like everything is getting on top of you!

Contrary to popular food fads, not all about what we eat, but also how and when we eat.

Try these simple Ayurvedic tips to support your digestion and health this Winter. ⁄ 70

This alone will radically support your digestion!

Think porridge, soups and stews, rather than cereals with cold milk, fruit salads or cold veggies.

Large amounts will dilute Agni and fizzy drinks will create more air and bloating.

#5 Take at least half a minute to breathe deeply before eating.

Eat slowly and be present with your nourishing food and yourself!

We know that stress greatly impacts our digestion.

But, in reality, how many of us make sure that we eat in a calm state and environment?

There is a reason our para sympathetic nervous system is called the rest and digest mode.

Too much stress, screens, pushing on and overdoing, (you do not have to prove yourself through action!), caffeine, alcohol and sugar are all stimulating and disturb our digestion.

We need be calm to digest well rather than eating on the run or multi-tasking at work!

#6 Aim to make lunch your main meal of the day and dinner an earlier and lighter meal.

Ideally have dinner done by 7.30pm at the latest.

Late meals will digest poorly, disturb your sleep and make you feel heavy the next morning.

#7 Increase your use of spices.

If you experience excess mucous, lethargy and heaviness in Winter think ginger, black pepper, cayenne, chill and garlic. And, exercise more to generate warmth.

Hot, active and light are good key words if this is your experience!

If you naturally have dry skin and lips and experience bloating and a tendency to anxiety or worry then favour gentle spices like cumin, fennel, ginger, cinnamon and cardamon.

Warm, nourishing and grounding are your key words!

If you are naturally a hot body, go easy on the hot spices even during Winter and remember to rest!

Ayurveda reminds us that we are a part of nature. We are made of the same stuff as the stars, the trees, the rivers, and the earth.

All around us nature is slowing down, withdrawing and going inwards for rejuvenation after the outward Masculine expression and heat of Summer.

Winter is the time of the Feminine. The season for deep nourishment and replenishing our energy reserves so we can meet Spring renewed and energised!

With good digestion you’ll more deeply tap into Winter’s rejuvenating quality.

Remember to invite nourishing feminine qualities into your life and business this Winter. » Schedule more rest, slowness, and down time.

sually, the initial stage of an intimate relationship is best characterised by Chemistry with a capital C. However, when you are in a long-term relationship, chances are the relationship isn’t very sparky. After being with someone for a long time, comfort slowly grows, but the spark is gradually disappearing – you are always busy thinking about the kids, the mortgage, your business, waiting for the quote to fix your roller door, etc.

To put it simply - your daily conversations with your partner are more likely to be about dull logistics than flirty fun.

IT’S TIME FOR A LITTLE CHAOS! An enjoyable, sustainable and healthy relationship needs two elements: order and chaos. Order refers to the comfort and trust you have accumulated in a committed relationship; chaos means being

3 Lessons Learnt from Divorce

In her business, Desiree is creating huge ripple effects by helping women over forty who want to get back into the workforce after divorce or separation.

Empowering them to become their own hero and coaching them through what can be such a rocky time. One of the reasons Desiree's work is so powerful is because she's been there herself. Here are three life-changing lessons that Desiree learnt from her own divorce. written by DESIREE BEEKHARRY

T

hese three lessons are the ones that had the most profound effect on me after I worked out that they were a bane to my post-divorce recovery. However, I would like to clarify that each woman will have her own top three lessons and they will probably not be the same.

My three lessons are: resolving shame, overcoming failure and not to take things personally.

SHAME Resolving shame means getting rid of it. Not pointing fingers. Not laying blame on myself or anyone else.

It took a while for me to realise that I was ashamed of being divorced.

My family was too. No one at home mentioned it. No one asked me how I felt about it.

When I was a girl child sitting in the women’s circle and listening to the women talking, divorced women were always discussed. It wasn’t so much about what they said but rather the bad taste and pity in how they said it. I eventually got to understand that ⁄ 74

my shame came from the culture, my upbringing and their beliefs that became my beliefs.

Mum used to tell me about how men tried to court her, thinking that as a divorcee she was more likely to ‘give it up’ after a couple of dates. Mum had to move back in with her parents after her divorce so that she was kept respectable. At the time, Mum was already a Registered Midwife on a salary. Yet, she finally applied for a nursing scholarship as a mental health nurse in the UK to escape.

I didn’t really get what she was saying then. And, I thought that living in the UK, if I were to ever get married, let alone divorced, things would be different for me. Because the culture is better and more open. More forgiving.

But, I was wrong because I allowed all the other stories to become my beliefs. Somehow, their shame became my shame. I allowed other people’s judgements about divorce to permeate me. The shame was present because of the code of silence around it in my family. To this day! It also turned out the culture, beliefs and judgements about divorce were the same in most countries.

With support I learned to let go of this shame and accept that I had nothing to be ashamed of.

When the voice of shame crept in, I learnt to hushit-up! There are many techniques to use to keep the voices in your head quiet and I used talk-back which worked for me.

FAILURE No one likes to admit failure. My marriage failed. I failed my high school Maths exam five times (gave up after that) but I talk about it and laugh about it because I know it was never my thing.

Yet, failing at a marriage, irrespective of the grounds for divorce, is a bitter pill to swallow.

My attitude to failure played a key role in healing. It was easier to blame someone for the failure than look within.

I needed to look at what triggered this unhealthy relationship to failure and the truth was that I am the eldest. I was expected to set the examples. In fact, I never told anyone during that time that I failed Maths because I was too ashamed – I said I wanted to get the highest grade… Now I admit to it and laugh knowing that it does not define me.

The marriage failed, not me.

NOT TAKING THINGS PERSONALLY Not taking things personally prior to, during or after a divorce – even long after a divorce can be a bigger challenge that anyone actually fathoms.

Why? Because divorce is personal. Divorce is very personal.

Facing it, dealing with it, accepting it, fighting through it, life beyond it is all a roller-coaster of emotions that causes chaos to our systems.

I failed at my marriage. I was ashamed. I’d have to look at people in the eye and tell them that and they have judgements. How could I not have taken it personally?

And I did…

The thing is that my sense of personal importance got in the way. It was “all about me”. I felt that I was responsible for everything. Me, me, me.

A marriage takes two and we both had beliefs on what a marriage should look like. When these beliefs differed, then the marriage failed.

I realised this after working on myself with a Shaman.

A healthy immune system is crucial to overall health and a range of factors influence how well it functions for it to effectively ward off infection and disease. These factors include your nutritional status, gut health, toxins, stress, sleep and having a chronic disease.

The best diet for a wellfunctioning immune system is a SLOW diet.

For this reason, it is important to avoid consuming nutritionally deficient processed foods such as refined carbohydrates and sugars which create havoc with our gut.

In addition, the gut flora (collectively known as your microbiome) also influence the immune response by releasing antimicrobial substances and preventing colonisation of the intestinal tract of potentially pathogenic bacteria.

Therefore, the greater the diversity of plant foods that you eat, you will nourish your ‘friendly microbes’ which will in turn keep you healthy.

What an optimal functioning immune It is easy to get caught up with the latest system needs. diet, however the best way to eat for health and immunity is SLOW – seasonal, local, organic and wholefood in which foods are as close to their natural state as possible.

The benefit of eating whole food is that the minerals and vitamins (and phytochemicals) locked within the foods are in the correct amounts that work together to benefit the immune system.

An example of eating whole food is making the choice to eat a fresh apple instead of a cup of long-life reconstituted apple juice (which is lacking in fibre and other nutrients) that has been processed and with sugar added.

The inclusion of foods high in protein (meat, eggs, diary, legumes, nuts, seeds, hemp and tofu) is essential for the synthesis of antibodies, white blood cells and for optimal T-cell function.

The gut-immune connection.

A layer of cells lines the entire digestive system (epithelial cells) and these are joined together by tight junctions that act as a barrier to defend us against antigens from food and microorganisms. When the gut barrier becomes weakened (by poorly digested proteins and food allergens) unwanted microbes and molecules pass through to immune cells causing infections and inflammation.

Vitamin A supports healthy mucosal barriers and the function of macrophages, neutrophils and natural killer cells. Sources of vitamin A include carrots, green leafy vegetables, spinach and sweet potatoes.

Vitamin C is essential for fighting respiratory infections as it increases the number of circulating immunoglobulins involved in the immune response.

Nature provides us with an abundance of citrus fruits, broccoli and sweet potatoes in winter which are high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids (plant derived compounds) that help the absorption of vitamin C. Vitamin D is not a nutrient in the usual sense as under normal conditions it is supplied by the action of sunlight on the skin.

The main function of vitamin D is to maintain serum calcium and phosphate concentrations by enhancing the absorption of calcium form the diet.

Vitamin D also helps induce monocyte conversion to macrophages (white blood cells that ingest microbial pathogens).

Few foods contain significant amounts of vitamin D2 (salmon, herring, mackerel and eggs) therefore in winter supplementation is advisable to maintain sufficient levels.

IT IS EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP WITH THE LATEST DIET, HOWEVER THE BEST WAY TO EAT FOR HEALTH AND IMMUNITY IS SLOW – SEASONAL, LOCAL, ORGANIC AND WHOLEFOOD, IN WHICH FOODS ARE AS CLOSE TO THEIR NATURAL STATE AS POSSIBLE.” “

Zinc functions as a cofactor for immune dependent responses and is required for the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes. Deficiency impairs white blood cell function. Food sources of zinc are beef, egg yolks, liver, oysters, sunflower and pumpkins seeds.

Iron is a trace mineral we require for cellular energy, synthesis of haemoglobin and detoxification. For immunity it is involved in proliferation of white and red blood cells and deficiency of it impairs T-cell function, cells that destroy virus infected cells.

Groups most at risk of deficiency include toddlers, children, menstruating women, vegans and vegetarians.

Best sources of iron rich foods is haem iron found in meat including beef, lamb, liver, poultry and fish. Non-haem food sources of iron include spinach, lentils, tofu and broccoli however iron in these foods is not as well absorbed as in animal meats due to phytates which bind minerals inhibiting their absorption.

Tip: Before supplementing with iron and vitamin D, get your serum levels checked through a blood test.

Warming Chicken Soup recipe by MELISA BYRNE

Preparation time . . . 20min Total time . . . 1h 10min Serving size . . . 4

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 chopped onion

1.

Cut fresh chicken breasts into slices or dice.

2.

Chop onion, leeks, carrot, celery and parsley stems. Heat a heavy pan and sauté the onion, garlic, leek and fresh ginger until soft and aromatic, add the vegetables and sauté 5 min.

3.

Add chicken stock to the pot and bring to a simmer, add chicken and ½ of chopped parsley leaves and cook until chicken is tender, add salt and pepper to taste.

4.

Serve sprinkled with fresh parsley and finely grated lemon zest and lemon wedges on the side. Add a ¼ cup of cooked rice or quinoa to your bowl before ladling over the hot soup.

5.

Enjoy!

A 2012 study found that carnosine, found in chicken breast may prevent the development of the common cold. So my recommendation is to have some of this lovely Chicken Soup in the early stages of a cold, or just to enjoy on a cold Winter’s day.

reading by REBECCAH ROACH THE EIGHT OF SWORDS This shows that central to our feelings around our businesses and life in general, it appears there is a sense of a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ kind of feeling. It could be the constant pull between family and life demands versus wanting to spend time on the business. This card also relates to a fear of moving out of the current situation. Feeling trapped in the present because we are too scared to move out of our comfort zone.

THE SEVEN OF CUPS Let us look at past external and internal influences that have led us up to now. The Seven of Cups indicates we have had many exciting choices and options before us, primarily affecting our emotional selves.

There has been so much exciting choice, where our hearts were led in different directions, making it necessary to choose the specific intention and focus. While there has been time of plenty of heart felt creative energy, there comes a time where careful decisions need to be made and action needs to be taken.

Wands relate to our creativity, our passions, what really drives us. Seeing the King of Wands here indicates that one of our biggest internal influences is the desire to feel that we are on top of it all. We are driven, passionate and want to be full of energy, pursuing our dreams, trying new things, impatient at times. Be mindful of counterbalancing that energy. Sometimes in this state of constant drive there may be lapses in attention to detail. Have we become bossy with those around us? Have we gotten so caught up that we are not as considerate of others as we should be?

THE NINE OF CUPS The Nine of Cups shows the influential happenings outside of us in times ahead. This is a beautiful card with great significance. The meaning behind it is a dream or wish of great importance coming true. It also signifies very important unions, typically romantically. I look at this card as two-fold.

On the one hand, a timely reminder to celebrate and really invest time and energy with our loved ones. By making that investment it can help us achieve balance. On the other hand, it also signifies an opportunity for strong partnerships, having been through trials and tribulations, there is a strong and successful outcome, worthy of celebration. It is a great reminder that having been presented with a lot of choices in the past (refer back to the Seven of Cups), by honing in on what we really want, being clear with our intent, taking consistent steps towards achievement, we absolutely can achieve a great outcome.

THE TWO OF PENTACLES Our internal influences in times ahead is shown by the Two of Pentacles. Time to get back to the drawing board with our plans and our skills. Be honest, flexible and adaptable. Is a different approach or method required for practical daily matters? A time to focus on our craft again and fine tune.

Maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and do that course that has been put off, the one that will strengthen your existing skills or provide you with a whole new skill set to take your business further forward. Invest in your learning. It may mean an alteration to financial affairs and a need to juggle things (what’s new? we’re used to that). Make full use of the resources available, even if it means taking a risk.

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE Underneath it all The Wheel of Fortune reminds us, as always, we have to roll with it, take the good with the bad. Nothing is set in stone, we are the ones in control of how we deal with whatever is thrown at us. What may seem like good fortune can just as quickly turn out to be not as good as we had hoped and vice versa, what seems like a catastrophe many times turns into a blessing. Use wisdom and all that has been experienced to roll with it, knowing that the wheel continues to turn, we continue to learn, set backs are temporary and so are the highs. Tune into the ebb and flow.

Take a moment, think back over past months, consider all the options available to you. Drill down, fine tune to figure out what it is your heart truly wants to focus on and then take action. Look for opportunities for great partnerships, great outcomes are available to you even after difficult times. In fact because of the difficult times, the achievement and celebration is all the more sweet. Take the chance to refine your skills or learn a new one if it’s going to help move you forward, even if it means some financial sacrifice. Now, first up – what are the most common challenges or blocks that you see getting in the way of people following their passion & purpose in biz?

There are several women in the SA Woman community who have nailed the magical place between talents, passions and purpose – I can spot them a mile off and you can see it shining from them as they go from strength to strength.

When it comes to people following their passion & purpose in business, the three most common challenges I see are: 1. They don’t believe that what they have is enough (so they keep adding to their offering and getting themselves and their audience more and more muddled)

Reason #3 for starting her own business: I didn’t want to have to ask anyone’s permission to take my dog down the beach, go for a surf or go to the Museum with my kids’ class (and get chewing gum in my hair and get told off for letting kids run wild in the botanic garden).

Last but definitely not least, the quirks! Oh my, the quirks. What are the transformations you see in businesses when the humans running them embrace the very essence of who they are? When perhaps they’ve not done so in the past, for fear of it not being professional or something you keep separate?

I’ve worked with so many clients – male and female – who think they need to be someone different in order for their business to succeed.

You know, the old “home persona” vs “work persona” thing.

But the thing is: once you’re confident in your talents and what you have to offer, your quirks and weird-nesses

simply become part of the proposition – part of the uniqueness of who you are.

I’ve seen it so many times – clients whose businesses take off the minute they bring the full ‘them’ to their work: without fail, their brightness and uniqueness draw the right people to them.

In very exciting news, you’ve launched ‘Northstar:Create’, which is an eight-week intensive for purpose-driven business owners.

The fact that you're here to help others unearth what sets their heart on fire, got me thinking about the exact opposite! About the downsides & at times drudgery of the last few years. Have you noticed in particular throughout the pandemic, that more & more people are really wanting to turn their passion into a business? That it becomes top priority?

Yep. When the pandemic first hit, I noticed that people were using the space it created to reevaluate their lives, and there seemed to be this real focus on building lives that worked for us, rather than the other way around.

I also think when the sh*t hits the fan it helps us realise how short life is – and how little of it there is to waste.

I remember reading this beautiful quote by Mizuta Masahide, which said “My barn having burned down, I can now see the moon”. It blew my mind and for days I couldn’t stop thinking about how I could help these people who were itching to create positive change in their lives.

It’s so important to do work that we love – the work that lights us up. I believe we all come with a gift to share, and that we all light up when we’re using ours.

I absolutely love that you help others to ‘do the work they love & earn good money on their own terms’. But what does this mean for you personally – what are your terms for your business?

When I established Human Brands I knew very clearly that I wanted to only work with businesses which were having a positive impact in the world – so that’s one of our non-negotiables.

I also knew that I didn’t want to do ‘cookie cutter’ marketing (because that takes away all the things that make your business special and leaves you swimming in a sea of identical-looking fish) and I definitely wanted to take a strategy-first approach.

I also knew that I wanted to work with amazing people in a way that brings creativity, playfulness and connection: we’ve totally built that in our community of clients and experts, and I think this is one of the things I’m most proud of.

Last of all, if you could go back 25 years to when you first started supporting clients to create and grow thriving businesses – what would you tell yourself ?

Do what you love.

Be brave: you are capable of so much more than you think you are.

Listen to the experts, but listen to yourself more.

hen podcasting popped onto the scene, savvy biz owners everywhere were singing from the rooftops because it gave them one heck of a free PR strategy.

Guesting on podcasts is an easy, essential strategy to catapult you and your biz into success!

So let's talk strategy for getting pitch perfect.

#1 DITCH HUMBLE Let’s start with the fact that when you're pitching to be a podcast guest there is no room to be humble.

We can do it with grace, sure. Authenticity, yes. Open-hearted humor, absolutely.

But there's no room for being humble.

If you’re serious about pitching to podcast guests, the first thing you need to get sorted is your bio and headshot.

Hint: Keep your bio updated regularly and use it on your FB/IG profile so if the host scopes you out, you’re consistent across all platforms.

Hands up if you’ve got becoming a world class charismatic speaker on your vision board?! Great, you’re in the right place. There is no better way in the online marketing world, to further your reach, grow your audience and be known as 'the person who...' in your industry, than podcasts. So, how do you get pitch perfect so they say Yes every single time? Babe, I got you. Read on to find out how to decide what podcasts are the best match for you, how to pitch to them and what to do when they say a big fat YES! #2 IT FLOWS BOTH WAYS The second thing I want you to understand about pitching to podcasts if you’re feeling nervous is this - it’s a mutually beneficial energetic exchange.

The host gets your specialized knowledge and expertise, and in return you get the exposure to a new (warm) audience that is already in the market for what you’ve got.

So remove the mindset block that says you’re asking for something, because you’re also giving!

In saying that, know what you’re offering.

Whether it be a unique insight, process, mindset shift or technique, be solid in what you know, how it helps the podcast hosts audience and why it is going to blow their minds.

#3 DO THE RESEARCH Next, you want to do a little research on the types of podcasts you’re going to pitch to.

It’s important here to stay away from direct competition and target the indirect competitors of your market. Those podcasts that offer similar but not the same products or services.

Why? Because you’re wasting your precious time and energy if you pitch to a direct competitor.

Their audience is already invested in the podcast host. They know them, love them and trust them, so you’re very likely to get no new fans (or sales!) by guesting on their podcast.

Instead, identify your indirect competitor markets and make a list of them.

Also ask yourself - who do you know in your immediate network within those markets that has a podcast?

Moving beyond that, get searching on any of the podcast platforms, as well as IG, FB or Pinterest using hashtags or keywords to find what you’re after.

Tip: These questions might help you distill down the podcasting pool: » Have they been podcasting (or in business) for a while?

» Do you have a burgeoning or established relationship with them already? » Are they competitive?

#4 MAKE YOUR MOVE Now you have the gold - the list of names. From here, if you don’t have an existing relationship with them, then start interacting with them on their posts, comment giving value and in support of what they’re saying to their audience.

When you feel comfortable - jump into their DM’s, but approach it with authenticity and transparency. Believe me, it is so refreshing and they can FEEL you.

Absolutely essential tip: be sure to have listened to at least one of their previous podcast eps!

Lead in with how you adore their podcast (get specific about what podcast ep changed your life and why), tell them a little bit about you and why you can bring tremendous value to their audience, make your request and leave it at that.

You’ve opened the conversation, you haven’t oversold yourself, you’re

solid in your offer to them and their audience and they’d be crazy to not take you up on it!

#5 WORK IT BABY! When they respond with a big fat YES, book in a time and give that audience all that you’ve got.

Remember: You can approach grassroots podcasts like this and it's great for building your confidence up and refining your speaking style. Then get out there to some big name pods, and there will usually be an application process.

When you’re looking at a grassroots podcast, as I mentioned above, be sure to keep an eye on what their engagement is like, because a larger audience is not always best.

If they have a micro audience that is highly engaged with them then you’re more likely to get quality followers or a potential sale because their audience is highly invested in them and trusts who they associate with...you!

These are the ones that have an audience of soul-mate clients, avoid at all costs those podcasts you are in direct competition with as you most likely won't get a yes from the host AND their audience are strongly invested in THEM not you.

#8 LUCKY LAST

guest etiquette WAIT YOUR TURN Don’t talk over the top of your host, allow them to complete their thought or question before chiming in.

TRUST THE HOST Be lead by them, trust they will ask you the questions their audience needs to hear so you can unleash your genius.

KEEP YOUR COOL Don't fidget - the sound is distracting and paints you as nervous. If you need to move your hands then choose something that is silent - I often have a crystal in my hand that I smooth over with my fingers.

SOUND CHECK Remove any bangles that you have that might make noise as you speak using hand gestures.

IT'S OH SO QUIET Be in a nice, quiet place with no distractions at the time of recording.

We are in theory emotional beings, with a higher EQ. So, stop planning your content from a logic or transaction-driven approach and start with the emotion.

What do you want this community you are building around your business to feel? Which of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are you tapping into and what is the journey you are taking them on?

Sounds pretty full-on for a Facebook post you say?

Well, perhaps but the truth is that when you start with the emotion you are tapping into aspects of our brain that run on instinct. ⁄ 103

Emotional relationships have a higher lifetime value A study from Motista showed that emotional attachments can create loyal customers. It found that customers with an emotional relationship to a brand have a 306% higher lifetime value and will likely recommend the company at a rate of 71%.

I don’t know about you, but I want those customers and I definitely want their word of mouse (pun intended). Our emotions generate longevity through engagement. Customers, and potential customers, are more likely to engage with feelings, whether that be on social media or a mental connection.

The good news then is that longevity translates to people being far more likely to remember the product and brand after emotionally connecting.

So we want to connect with them the same way we would if they were sitting next to us.

Have you ever been trapped at a table with someone who literally doesn’t shut up about themselves? Maybe you have “that” friend, you know, the one who has always done it bigger, better or harder?

The point is the above examples shouldn’t be you! Hone in on the emotion then ask yourself what action you want them to take. It’s not always about implicit calls to action – like/tag/share.

Get busy being socially focussed The most successful businesses on socials are focused on implied calls to action, the soft sell and occasionally they throw in the other kind, like the salt and pepper to finish off a good meal.

Spend the time getting to know your customers and stop making assumptions about who they are, what they are dealing with and why they buy into you or your business' success. Get some of them together, supply them with wine and have a conversation.

It always generates some amazing insights that will shape your approach and build your connection capacity online.

5 Steps to

n this article, I'm going to run you through my top five places to start when looking to make your business a more sustainable operation. Most of these are free or very low cost in the establishment but have significant impact on your business’ ecological footprint.

1. BIN AUDIT This is my place to start for everyone trying to be more sustainable at home and in business. It won't cost you a thing, it just takes a bit of your time and energy!

The key idea with this, is to understand what your business is discarding. Then, the outcome of gaining information on this is twofold. You can change practises that reduce waste and often money leakage and find better ways to manage the waste that you do create.

Here's how to do it: For a week record everything that goes into each bin - for example, rubbish, recycling and organics.

You can do this with a tool like the one on the Green Industries SA website, or by simply writing everything down on some paper.

You don't need to be very specific with this list. For example, if you create copy paper waste, take note each time you empty the copy paper waste into the larger collection wheelie bin/ dumpster and for a general waste bin, take note of what items are ending up in the bin each time it's emptied (such as food waste, recyclable containers, and soft plastics).

Next, is to identify things that can be taken out of general waste and disposed of in a different place or manner.

Some questions to ask yourself at this stage are: » Do we need more bins to separate the waste? » Is the wrong waste ending up in the ⁄ 112

wrong bin? » How can I help my staff to use the right bins? » Are there things in the bin that suggests we should change some business activities or practises?

Solutions that I've found to these questions have often been solved with clear identification of the bin that should be used for each waste item.

I personally love BinShift and their cardboard waste stream bins and signage (not affiliated - just love this SA business). These bins can be ordered from the BinShift website and picked up from fellow SA Woman business, Ecolateral.

Something you may want to consider is creating a business compost or worm farm. Office friendly versions are now readily available - and no they don’t smell! If this is not your thing check out what organic waste management is available to you via your kerbside collection or look at the green waste commercial collections available. These will save you money!

You could consider sharing this bin with a business neighbour to bring the cost down even further.

The best thing about these cards is that you can update the details in your user account at any time so if any details change you don't need to reprint cards you simply update the digital details.

2. DIGITAL BUSINESS CARDS

There are several brands on the market that I quite like. TAPT is an Australian company and now you can order the card from Officeworks. V1CE is a UK based company and create the non-plastic card options (metal and wood). Social Dot is another Australian company who have make a small NFC adhesive dot that you can attach to your phone, ID badge or key chain to pass digital business cards to smart phones. I have personally used or received digital cards from all these

Whilst it can be quite time consuming to manage your digital data, it is well worth investing time in creating a process or habit to help you routinely sort and delete from cloud storage.

My personal favourite tool I use on my Mac is Time Machine which backs up my data but writes over older copies, so I only ever have the most up to date version of things I need to keep.

4. REUSABLES If you are in a business that uses things like disposable cups in your breakout room, a swap to reusables will save a lot in waste generation and dollars if you swap to reusables that can be

This is not an item so much as a suggestion. If you are anything like me you have acquired pens, post-it notes, notepads, and notebooks from events you have been to or gifts from people, even end of year school stationery sent home.

If you already have this - use it. Don’t feel bad about the single use pen or plastic highlighter - use it up and then make sure you take to Officeworks to recycle.

3. Prepayments Do you have any big business expenses coming up? Are you able to prepay them? Anything you can pay in advance before 30th June will have a positive impact timing wise.

4. Superannuation Whatever your business structure, superannuation can be used as a tax saving vehicle. From 1st July 2021, an individual can contribute up to $27,500 towards concessional superannuation contributions. Any contribution must be received into your fund and cleared by 30th June and your fund must be notified of the intention to claim a tax deduction.

5. Motor Vehicle If you use your motor vehicle for business purposes, do you keep a logbook? A logbook will ensure that

The ATO will always want to see receipts and they won’t accept paper copies that are faded and browned.

Digital is an excellent way to manage this but make sure you know where the receipts are being stored and ensure you have backup copies. At this time of year we should be reviewing our accounting software and making sure it is meeting our requirements and working for us.

8. Think before you spend And finally, one of my favourite sayings “Don’t spend a dollar to save 30 cents”.

There is no point in spending just for the sake of it. If your business is making a healthy profit you will pay tax and that’s a great position to be in!

Do you struggle to earn consistent, reliable income in your business? Do you find it even more challenging to step back from ‘business as usual’ and think of new ways to generate or increase your revenue when the old ways aren’t getting the desired financial results? Increase your prices

Repackage your services If you haven’t increased them in the up into ongoing retainer past 12 months, you need to do it; offerings look at inflation – life has become so expensive.

Add an extra revenue stream to your business One that doesn’t require your direct time - create and sell e-books, prerecorded courses or masterclasses, or merchandise via your website.

Or, a revenue stream that lets you leverage your time by serving many people at once - paid speaking gigs, group workshops, or masterclasses.

Then, instead of finding new clients month in, month out, you can create a consistent revenue stream by signing clients onto ongoing retainers.

Find any that went cold over the past 12 months and reach out to them. It can’t hurt to ask, and even if it is a ‘no,’ it’s still nice to make that connection and reach out. But sometimes, people are just busy and forget to get back to you. Make it easy for them to buy from you.

Can you be found easily?

Review your SEO, run Facebook or Google ads or increase visibility on social media.

Ensure that you are selling your services or products to reflect the value, quality, and price point you offer. It will be hard to consistently convert into sales if you aren’t selling yourself or your products well.

The moral of the story is this: if things aren’t going how you would like them to financially – take it into your own hands and take action, increase your visibility and remember: you can’t sell a secret!

Take charge of your finances!

It seems that bushfires, floods and covid weren’t enough to throw a few curve balls our way! Now inflation has taken hold, interest rates are on the rise and the cost of day to day living seemingly takes more and more from our pockets every week. So what can we do? Here are my top 10 tips for managing your finances in these difficult times. written by SHARON BURTON

I

am a big believer that we control our finances and not our finances control us.

With a little time and few simple changes to our lives, we can make significant difference to our expenditure and savings and our disposable income.

1. KNOW YOUR SPEND Until you know what you are spending, you cannot budget. So, get out the Excel spreadsheet, create your columns, go through your bank accounts and balance your accounts.

Start with fixed costs like rent/mortgage and household bills, and then work down to food and other regular expenses and finish with entertainment and social expenses. Split your columns into colours to make it easier to view.

2. SET UP YOUR ACCOUNTS Have an account for Bills, Save, Spend. Record

everything, even the 5 year renewal for your Driver's Licences and kids' education. Once you have worked out what you must spend in each area, divide it into how often you get paid and put that amount into your individual accounts each week/fortnight/month.

Also abolish the fees! Many banks charge $10 or $15 to have an account – but you do not need to pay to give the bank your money. Source a bank that has free banking and online management.

3. NEGOTIATE Negotiate everything! Speak to a broker to see if you can get a better rate on your loans. Did you know your broker can even help you get a better rate with your own bank?

Negotiate your utilities and insurances. It does not pay to stay with the same provider, tell them you can get a better deal elsewhere and ask for a discount as a long-standing customer.

4. DROWN THE DEBT/ CONSOLIDATE IF NECESSARY Get those debts paid off quick. Work on the debt that has the highest interest rate and bust it out (or consolidate). Get rid of Zip pay and Afterpay - if you don’t have the money, don’t buy it.

My top tip: wrap the credit card in plastic and put it in a container of water in the freezer. By the time it has defrosted so you can use it you will have had time to think if you really need to buy what you were looking at!

5. SAVE Save a minimum of 10% of what you earn, and put it into a separate account with no card access to make it a true savings account. Savings accounts that have money in and out are not true savings accounts.

Have a no spend week, set a challenge to fill a coke bottle with $2.00 coins, set yourself challenges to save - there are lots of ideas on the internet to save more.

6. FIND THE DEALS There are deals everywhere, including SA State Travel Vouchers, Groupon, Scoopon, signing up to retailers for birthday vouchers - there are lots of options to save money. Download Honey and get discounts on everything online.

7. CUT THE CRAP Take a long, hard look at what you are spending and where can you save money. 1 coffee a day is 5 x 5 x 52 = $1,300.00 per year. 1 per week is only $260.00 a year – boom, that's $1,000 saved right there! Taking your own food to work can save $2,500 a year.

Play the “Do I really need this new?" Game. You will be very surprised how quickly you realise that you don’t really need something or can get it cheaper second hand.

8. THE SIDE HUSTLE If you're struggling - what can you do to earn a little more? We all have skills we can use to make some extra money. Join the baby sitting clubs, even one night a week can earn you an extra $4,000 per year. Or, can you write CVs, take in ironing or do something else for extra cash?

9. TIME IS MONEY Money management is hard work, so you need to invest time. Mark it in your diary so that you put aside the time you need to balance your accounts and track your money and negotiate those expenses.

10. MONEY DATE NIGHT Put time aside to talk to your partner and family. Set your goals, work together, make decisions together.

Teach your kids the importance of saving and wise spending and giving to those less fortunate. It’s up to us the parents to teach the next generation.

Remember you are in control, you have choices, you make the decisions. Make sure you control the finances and not the finances control you.

The moments that

shape your life.

The fire on the 3rd was heading towards our vineyard, but the wind turned and it didn’t get there. But on the night of the 9th it was completely lost. Every bit of the 300-hectare property went up. Eleven hectares of vines gone. The vineyard shed and all the equipment were completely destroyed, along with the offices, the lab, the toilet block and the four-bedroom house on the property. This is Maren's story.

he winery shed is the only thing that survived, but sustained significant damage. It was a massive undertaking and we didn’t know where to start.

A day or two after, Yale started making a list of what needed to happen; no power, no water, it wasn’t really even safe to be there with all of the fallen and burning gum trees.

The clean-up took months as there was so much wire and melted irrigation pipes. Forty kilometres of fencing and over 260,000 kilometres of vineyard wires needed to be removed. 55,000 vines and each vine had 6 wires, so to get all the wire off and irrigation out took ages and was where Yale spent months. We had the help of great friends plus BlaizeAid, Team Rubicon and the ADF. Mum was over from the States and this is how she spent her six-week-trip.

Once the clean-up was done, it was time to address the vines—are they completely dead? Or will they come back? Three of the 11 hectares of vines were just gone – burnt up; the radiant heat got the rest. They went from nice little grapes to crunchy nothing overnight. Yale had consultants and viticulturists come over and assess.

It was decided the best option for their survival was to cut off all the vines down to 4cm. Team Rubicon were amazing and helped with the cut down; but it was really emotional to see it all cut to nothing.

Then we waited. They had expected the vines to reshoot by August but nothing happened. With the late rain in October, there is now some regrowth.

We just wait and see through summer.

If they do come back, it would still be two to three years before there are grapes to harvest.

It makes you look at everything in a different way; you reassess what’s important. Along with the vineyard burning, we evacuated multiple times from our home during all of this.

After all the nights of fearing for our safety and family and friends, you realise the material stuff doesn’t matter.

As a family unit, we probably are stronger now. I never had to deal with anything remotely close to this, and have never experienced a fire before.

It’s a learning curve and you learn a lot about yourself and what you are capable of. That you can get through things and be happy again.

I was born here and went to Kingscote area school back in the day. I did my Year 11 over 2 years and because of my learning disability I did the whole structure a bit different.

Back then the kids didn’t really understand and I got bullied a fair bit. People not understanding your needs kind of thing so you got a label. You can’t really take it too hard; I don’t think they really understand what’s going on. This is Chelsea's story.

I

’ve got little bits of everything and I haven’t actually been diagnosed as such. I was born with hip dysplasia; I have a rare bone disease in my wrist as well. I have a little learning disability, learning and writing, get numbers muddled up a bit; lots of little bits.

The doctors always say, I am unique.

They’ve tried to work it out but the reality is that maybe I shouldn’t need to know. Maybe I just get on with life, do what you can for you and your community.

The community and my family and friends have always supported me and said, ‘you can do this.’ Like me for who I am or you know where the door is.

My message to other people persevere and you’ll get there.

My dream has been to provide a service for people with disabilities, child and youth age, in a fun and safe environment, for after school or on the weekends, in school holidays. I want to get them to work out what they want to do. That’s always been a dream, will see how it rolls.

I take every day as it comes. I am a very community-orientated person and I just love to help look after other people.

I could talk for hours about the jobs I have done. My first job was cleaning Elders back in the day when I was still in school, then started working at Foodland and worked there for 8 years. When a job came up at the hospital, I went for that and have been there for 13 years now. I’ve also done my Cert 3 in childcare as well, and I did my disability study. I can go and be a carer in someone’s house, I got all my tickets for that. I am very much a people person and caring. I would do anything to help someone.

Place in jar with apple juice and leave on counter overnight

Next day place pear mix into blender or Thermomix®. Add lemon juice & honey and blend to your desired consistency (TM 10 seconds Speed 5, scrape down & repeat).
