Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS) Community Support Directory Welcome to the SAVS Community Support Directory, which has been compiled for anyone interested in the Southend community and community development. We are fortunate that Southend has an active and vibrant voluntary and community sector which contributes to the quality of life for those living and working in the area.

This directory aims to give details of groups and support networks to supplement the services provided by the statutory authorities. Please make direct contact with the groups in this directory if you feel they might be able to help you. Established in 1980, SAVS has become the acknowledged support and co-ordinating agency for the local voluntary sector, acting as a liaison point between voluntary and statutory organisations and members of the public. SAVS member organisations represent people with various disabilities, the young, the not so young, families, carers, ethnic minorities, and campaigners. SAVS task is to assist these agencies by supporting them in their work, providing practical assistance, resources, information and advice, liaison with others, advocacy, training opportunities, and publicity. In short, doing all we can to increase the effectiveness of voluntary activity and to raise the profile of the voluntary and community sector.

Southend's Drug and Alcohol Team (DAAT) There are drug and alcohol teams, or their equivalent, throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Their job is to deal with drug and alcohol issues in their local area.

Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs) bring together representatives of all the local agencies involved in tackling the misuse of drugs, including the health authority, local authority, police, probation, social services, education and youth services and the voluntary sector.

Advocacy Services BATIAS Independent Advocacy Services An independent advocacy service providing support to adults with learning disabilities. Bipolar UK Bipolar UK is the national charity dedicated to 0207 931 6480 supporting individuals with the much misunderstood and devastating condition of bipolar, their families and carers.

Each year we reach out and support over 65,000 individuals through our services and information/advice publications. We also work in partnership with research organisations and campaign for new developments to tackle key issues.

Our services encompass a national network of self help groups, self management training courses, a mentoring scheme working with hospitals and psychiatric units, members services incorporating a dedicated Helpline, a youth service, workplace training and our vibrant e Community, a web-based discussion forum for individuals affected by bipolar to share their views and experiences.

The Southend group meets at SAVS on the third Thursday of each month between 7.30pm and 9.15pm. The Group is open to anyone affected by bipolar, including carers and families. It offers selfsupport and a chance to talk or just listen.

Southend CAP Debt Advice Centre Southend CAP debt advice centre will offer help and advice to people in debt. We will work in association with Christians Against Poverty - an organisation based in Bradford. They have many years experience in providing budgeting, negotiation with creditors and legal services. Our volunteers will visit potential clients, explain the service, gather personal financial information (with permission of the client), explain budgets and agreed payment plans to assist the individual get out of debt. The volunteers then maintain contact - passing on any change of circumstances, offering encouragement and practical assistance, e.g. providing a food shop at times of crisis. Please note although the organisation has originated within a Christian/church setting its services are offered to all unconditionally (i.e. of any faith background or none)

They offer short break services offering respite to families and carers. Hamelin House supports children from 5 years to 18 years and is based in Billericay.

Gowlands is an adults short break service based at Sutton Bridge Farm, Sutton Road, Rochford. On this site they also have a hydrotherapy pool – which can be booked through their central office number 01277 653889 press option 6.

Roots and Shoots is a horticultural project in Rochford. Set in five acres this project supports adults from 16 years and offers training in horticulture and animal husbandry.

In Billericay, they have a Day Opportunities service which provides support to adults with learning and complex needs. The services aim to provide a resource centre for local people from which community based opportunities can be co-ordinated.

They also have two re-use and recycling projects based on the ground floor of their central office in Billericay. They offer adults with learning disabilities training and work experience in Furniture Restoration and IT Recycling. These projects work in conjunction with their charity shops for the re-sale of refurbished IT and restored furniture.

They also run a community outreach service for children and adults to access leisure activities and places of interest with support.

There are three charity shops based in Billericay, Laindon and Shenfield.

In Wickford is a purposely designed home "The Bungalow” " which supports four adults with profound and multiple disabilities.

Soroptimist International Southend-on-Sea & District Soroptimist International was formed 90 years ago by a group of professional women in order to further the aims and education of women and girls. It is now a world-wide organisation which is fully represented on United Nations. Internationally, we have had a four year project to raise money for women and children in Sierra Leone after the civil war. The Southend Club is part of a London Anglia region whose focus this year has been to raise awareness of Violence Against Women. SOS Rape Crisis The vision of SOS Rape Crisis is to relieve the trauma and distress of women and girls, their families and friends, who have experienced any form of sexual violence, in particular but not exclusively through the support and promotion of Rape Crisis Centres and through the provision of services and information

SOS Rape Crisis is a confidential, non-judgemental support service for survivors of sexual violence that has occurred at any time in their lives – either current, recent or historic.

SOS Rape Crisis is a women’s led service that supports women from the ages of 11 year upwards.

SOS Rape Crisis also support male survivors up to the age of 16 years.

In addition, SOS Rape Crisis supports friends and families who have also been affected by sexual violence.

Services provided include: Face to face support service for women aged 18 years and over that provides practical and emotional support through matters such as criminal justice system, signposting advice for areas such as housing and benefits etc.

Face to face specialist sexual violence counselling service.

Information and Support Telephone Line that provides up to 40 minutes of telephone support.

Raising awareness is also a primary aim of SOS Rape Crisis to reduce the social tolerance of sexual violence and to educate young people, professionals and communities on the effects of sexual violence. The service provides a service to education institutions in the areas of Southend-on-Sea, Rochford and Castle Point through assemblies and presentations, as well as team meetings and conference presentations.

There is also a range of literature and publications that inform as well.

South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre SERICC provides a service to women and girls over 13 years old who have been raped sexually assaulted experienced child sexual abuse or sexual harassment.

British Deaf Association The BDA is the largest Deaf organisation in the UK that is run by Deaf people. We represent the Sign Language community which is united by shared experiences history and most importantly by British Sign Language (BSL).

The BDA wants to see a society where Sign Language users have the same rights responsibilities opportunities and quality of life as everyone else. BSL was recognised as an official British language on 18th March 2003 but it still does not have any legal protection. This means that Deaf Sign Language users do not have full access to vital information and services including education health and employment.

We want to see an end to this.

The Changing Places Consortium is campaigning for Changing Places toilets to be installed in big public places. The Changing Places Consortium has launched its campaign on behalf of those people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. It supports 13 to 30 yearolds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Salvation Army Day Centre Leigh Meets the needs of the community and demonstrate Gods care with the provision of a luncheon club and day care facilities for the elderly. Pre-School and charity shop.

The Day Care Centre offers care to older people requiring support. Daily fee includes transport, lunch and any entertainment. Two minibuses, one with tail lift, are available to pick up people living in Leigh and parts of Westcliff and Eastwood.

The Lounge is open to anyone between 10am and 1pm to drop in for tea or coffee.

The luncheon club is open Monday to Friday and a freshly cooked two course meal is served at 1pm.

Membership of the luncheon club is free, pre-booking is not required and all older people are welcome.

The day centre has a weekly programme of activities and clubs.

Thera employs people with a Learning Disability as quality Assessors.

They find out what people think about the support they get from Thera and what Thera needs to change to make peoples support better.

Thera can support people with a learning disability in a number of different ways and each person can design their own support based on their needs, wants and wishes. Whether people need 24-hour support at home or just a few hours in the local community, Thera can offer flexible support to suit.

Wyvern Community Transport The Wyvern Community Transport Scheme provides 01268 753513 Rochford transport for permanent residents of Rochford or Castle Point Borough who are unable to use conventional public transport. It can be used for any of these activities: hospital visits, social/day centres, further education, rehabilitation classes, chiropodist appointments, to visit family or friends, shopping, doctor dentist or optician appointments, lunch clubs church ETC. Free membership and you will be required to register for the scheme each year.

Members assist with the cost of the journey by paying £3 for any distance up to 3 miles and for journeys over 4 miles £0.45 per mile. Group hire is also available for use by registered groups in our operating area. They can be used for days out, theatre visits etc. There is an annual membership for groups with an annual subscription of £15. All minibuses are wheelchair accessible have low level entry rear lift platforms and seat belts.
