Mayoral Robes: A pompous relic of past? Dear Sir, Recently, in the context of a budget emergency, a blast of conservative govt spruiking, has claimed there is a need f or prudent and diligent management of the public purse - nevertheless recent performances by some of those advocates have not been too successful. Then out of the blue, comes a request by Mayor Maggio to modernise the Mayoral kit. I won't lose any sleep over this one, but at a measly $4500 less the medals and chains, sounds like value, particularly for the lucky tailor! Funny, I have seen pictures of that mayoral uniform many times, but I couldn't describe it to save my life - from memory, a red heavily braided cape with a type of inverted Davy Crockett hat sown within. I remember a few years back, the boss of my beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs football club decked out the players in Amani suits - I thought it was great, particularly as it was Rusty Crowe, the club owner who paid for it! For us the ratepayers, it is the reverse case, with the Mayor decking himself out at our expense! Regards the robes, if it was up to me, the mayoral regalia, I regard to be a pompous relic of the past, which should be scrapped, and the savings directed to books for our impressive Council Library across the way! If council disagrees with my view, then I wonder why the existing robes can't be properly dry cleaned - I know a Vietnamese bloke at Macquarie Centre who has this large dry cleaning press which does lots of hissing (bit like Council meeting) and suddenly returns your garment clean and good as new! I reckon that device, could exorcise any spirits of past mayors that may have been lurking in those robes if that really is the problem! Having said that, it is only fair to hear later from the Mayor and his reasons why the mayoral garments need to be updated. JOHN FRYER Ryde

tablished a Mayor's Bushfire Appeal with a $5,000 donation. This is a time for the community to come together and support those affected by this tragic event. Given the magnitude of the disaster and the long term effects the bushfires will have on many communities, this appeal is a chance for the City of Ryde community and the Council to work together to raise much needed funds for those affected. The health, social and economic impact on those affected will demand our financial and psychological support over the coming weeks, months and possibly years. I ask residents to donate generously to the Mayor's NSW Bushfire Appeal so that we can help these people rebuild their lives and their communities. I pay tribute to the dedication and hard work of the men and women in all emergency services whose tireless effort in times of disaster is testimony to the Australian Spirit and way of life. Collection points will be located at the Ryde Civic Centre, Ryde Planning and Business Centre, the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre and all Library branches. All funds raised through the City of Ryde Mayor's Bushfire Appeal will be donated to the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal for the specific use of victims of the NSW bushfires. Any assistance you can give us to boost our numbers would be wonderful. KRISTY ANDERSON Co-ordinator Cutler Parade Playgroup North Ryde.

Too much for mayoral gear Dear Sir, I am appalled at the approval of $4,500 on a new mayoral outfit in the 21st century. Lawyers continue to wear robes and wigs as a form of protection to conceal their appearance. However, this cannot be said of Mayor Maggio who appears in ever increasing photo shoots. Mr Mayor, the ratepayers are very unhappy about the waste (in the millions of dollars) expended on consultants for the unwanted demolition of our civic centre for twin tower high-rise flats which would further cheapen our suburb. Perhaps wearing the mayoral chains is sufficient. You must be on a "high" Mr Mayor but really the office of suburban mayor cannot equate to that of a regal position, can it? $4,500 can easily be spent on community needs such as a computer for a local volunteer group, parks and facilities for children. LEONIE DEAN East Ryde.

Fuel loads, not climate change Dear Sir, The bibles of mainstream climate change are the Assessment Reports issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) every six years or so. The latest was issued recently, in September 2013. Significantly, it backs away from the link between climate change and specific extreme weather events. The IPCC says that connections of warming to extreme weather have not been found. "There is medium evidence and high agreement that longterm trends in normalized losses [that is, adjusted for exposure and wealth of the increasing populations] have

not been attributed to natural or anthropogenic climate change." The IPCC claim only to have "low confidence" 1n their ability to project "changes in frequency and duration of mega-droughts." The official report does say that "drought, coupled with extreme heat and low humidity, can i~crease the nsk of wildfire , but there is no drought in southeast Australia at the moment. They also say "there is evidence that future climate change could lead to increases in the occurrence of wildfires because of changes in fuel availability, readiness of the fuel to burn and ignition sources." Carbon dioxide is a potent plant fertilizer. According to NASA satellites there is more living plant matter today, with a 6% increase in the twenty years to 2000. So there is more to burn. Some academic papers conclude that climate change might be a contributing factor (Cai, Nicholls), others say it is not (Crompton, Pielke). If there was any specific evidence that linked climate change to bushfires or extreme weather events, we know they would be trumpeting it loudly. That they don't, speaks volumes. There has been a hiatus in the rise of average global air temperatures for the last fifteen years or more. Basically the world hasn't warmed for the last decade and a half. While this does not rule out warming in some regions, climate cannot have been much of a contributor to the worsening bushfire situation over the last fifteen years. People have been burning off to keep fuel loads low in Australia for thousands of years. Current fuel loads are now typically 30 tonnes per heelare in the forests of southeast Australia, compared to maybe

Young adults' support up win carer award IT IS indeed a thrill and a great surprise for Young Adults with Disabilities (YADs) Carers Support group to have been recognised w ith an award during Carers Week. YADs Carers Support Group, a part of Hunters Hill Ryde Community Services (HHRCS), was unofficially formed in the early 1990s when parents of intellectu ally disabled teenagers met at drop-off/pick-up points for recreational activities for their charges. A bond was readily established among these parents who shared similar challenges and friendships were formed and information about services was shared One day, in 1994, the parents were informed that Ryde Council had been approached by a young graduate who wished to set up a carers support group for parents/carers of intellectually disabled people aged between 16-25 years. The consensus was one of reluctance, they felt they did not need it; they got along just fine and did not want another night out to attend meetings, etc. Graduate (Maria Harasymczuk), however, was very

THE CARERS have not looked back, and have supported one another, sharing friendship and information and enjoying outings, education, fun nights, carers breaks (ie weekends away), guest speakers etc, under the leadership of HHRCS' great coordinators. Needless to say, the greatest concern of parents of children with special needs is what will happen to my son/ daughter when I can no longer care for him/her? This issue was frequently discussed at the carers meetings and in 2004 RASAID (Ryde Area Supported Accommodation for Intellectually Disabled) was formed as a spin-off from

Track and train safe lessons an Aussie first The TrackSAFE Foundation last week officially launched an Australian first, a national education initiative for primary school students to learn about tra in and track safety. Part of National Children's Week, the initiative 'Be on the Safe Side' provides teachers with learning resources to conduct lessons with a train and track safety theme. Launching the initiative at West Ryde Public School TrackSAFE Board Director and CEO of the Australasian Railway Association Bryan Nye, said: ' Be on the Safe Side is based on substantial evidence that students learn and retain safety messages best when they are positive and integrated as part of their normal curriculum. "This is an Australian first and will set the bar for rail safety education internationally. "At the most crucial developmental period in their lives as active and responsible citizens of our society, children have not been able to access quality resources to learn vital safety skills around train tracks, which should be as common as learning to cross the road or learning to

year there are on average 166 collisions per annum between trains and people or vehicles, including 35 collisions causing fatality; plus thousands of near collisions and many more which go unreported, "said Mr Nye. Be on the Safe Side learning resou rces are available online free of charge to all primary schools across Australia and will be available to high schools in 2014. Visit the 'Be on the Safe Side' sites - for teachers and parents visit www. tracksafeeducation and for students visit www. Storytellers Event at Marsden High School

"Rather than 'talking down' to students or highlighting unsafe actions, the 'Be on the Safe Side' learn ing resources emphasise students' strengths by allowing them to discover and solve train and track safety problems relevant to their local community, "said Mr Nye. Students regularly take risks near platform edges and on level crossings, not demonstrating the behaviours necessary to keep themselves safe around trains and tracks. In addition, a disproportionate number of young people trespass daily on train tracks to apply graffiti or vandalise property, deliberately risking their own and others' lives, with the attitude that the potential lifelong consequences of their actions 'won't happen to them'. "Across Australia each

Deadly drop zone puts kids at risk One hundred and sixty Denistone children - some as young as five - are at risk of being hit by a car because of an unsafe footpath outside their school. Parents and teachers at St Therese's Catholic School are urging Ryde City Council to do something about the steep, slippery footpath which is less than two metres outside the only gate to the school on Kings Road. Parent Gillian O'Neill described a 'throng' of children who make for the school exit each afternoon and has seen four- to sixyear-olds caught in the rush. "We've seen kindy kids coming out of school and actually teeter on the edge of this steep embankment next to the road," Ms O'Neill said. "If they fall onto the road it's a fall right into the path of oncoming traffic.· Parent Alexa Pirozzi agreed and she said she insisted her son Nicholas tightly holds her hand near the embankment. "If a child slips, he wouldn't stand a chance," she said. "I think we've been fortunate not to have a bad accident and every parent here supports our school, which

wants to do something about it." The school and the parents and citizens committee are calling on Ryde City Council roadworks experts to come out and consult with them to find a solution. P&C spokesman Craig Blayney says the first and most pressing need is for Council to erect a safety fence on the footpath between the school gate and the embankment. "It needs be no higher than a swimming pool child safety fence," he said. "This would, particularly, reduce the risk of an unattended stroller being accidentally knocked down (the embankment) and onto the busy road." Acting Principal Warren Hopley places strong emphasis on road safety classes at the school but admits the school's location on the corner of Kings and Blaxland roads present risks road safety classes can only warn about. · we keep our gate to Blaxland Road closed because of the danger and we recently put up fences around the school. "This means that at school

closing time we can have up to 250 parents and children coming out of the main gate, which is also beside our kiss-and-ride zone," Mr Hopley said. Ryde Clr Jerome L.axale, who visited the school with The Weekly Times recently, has agreed to raise the issue with councillors and council staff as well as with the Council's Traffic Committee, including police. He said that after seeing the risks for himself he would also advocate for traffic calming measures in Kings Road. · speed humps just after the corner on the blind bend would reduce the speed from 40 kilometres to 25 kilometres Denistone parents Gillian O'Neill and Alexa Pirozzi and their children Hugh and Nicholas approach the dangerous and give motorists a better chance to brake if a child fell embankment outside their Denis tone school alongside Acting Principal Watren Hopley and Ryde councillor Jerome Laxale. The revue is held at the North Sydney Leagues Club, 12 Abbott Street, Cammeray which provides the venue free of charge. Doors open at 6.45pm for a 7:30pm start and tickets cost $40. Now in its 38th year, the revue is a hilarious, tonguein-cheek take on the airline industry brought to you by the people who know it best -a cast of 75 made up of Qantas staff and friends who volunteer their time to create the show. One of Pathfinders' volunteers is Ryde resident and talented flight attendant Melisa Prieto who has a close connection to RIDBC. Melisa works as a volunteer at RIDBC Alice Betteridge School, which supports school aged students with a significant hearing or vision loss, as well as a level of intellectual impairment. "I've volunteered in the same class for the last four years," said Melisa. "Watching the students learn, and seeing them develop their skills and knowledge, has been a real privilege. It's really fantastic to be so connected to RIDBC - I get to see firsthand the great work done by the organisation. "It has also been wonderful to be part of the Pathfinders Revue. As you can imagine, domestic and international flight attendants have a hectic schedule and it takes a lot of organisation and planning to get everyone together to rehearse. China retain Bennelong Cup

Bennelong MP John Alexander hosted the 3rd annual Bennelong Cup Table Tennis competition last week wit h China producing superb displays t o retain the trophy. "I am thrilled to see the competition and the crowds grow each year, " said Mr Alexander. "This year we've had over 1,000 spectators with standing room only on the final night of competition at Ryde Community and Sports Centre. Japan entered the competition in 2013 which added another strong competitor and certainly entertained the audience with athleticism and ability." The competition started in Canberra where hundreds of Parliament House workers, tourists and residents joined Mr Alexander and embassy officials for the third annual Bennelong Cup Table Tennis tournament in The Great Hall of Parliament House. Players from China, Ko-

rea and Japan came to Australia for the competition, which continued at the Ryde Community Sports Centre last Friday and Saturday. "I established the Bennelong Cup in 201 1 as a tool to bring together schools students from different cultural backgrounds through the healthy fun activity of table tennis," said Mr Alexander. · After donating table tennis tables to all 40 schools in the Bennelong electorate, with the generous assistance of Hyundai Australia, the program now includes competition with some of the world's best players," he said . "I was delighted to welcome senior officials from all three embassies to join me in Parliament House

for this important cultural event. Australians traditionally play sport with our closest friends. Whi1st we enjoy healthy trading and diplomatic relationships with China, Korea and Japan, it is fitting that we also play sport together in one of our most respected places: the Great Hall of Parliament House." "Sadly there can only be one winner and for the second year in a row the Bennelong Cup went to China with Japan runner up and Korea third and Australia fourth." "In the schools competition the winners were Carlingford High for both Senior Boys and Junior Boys; Carlingford Public for Primary Boys and Eastwood Public for Primary School Girls."

School takes two table tennis titles Carlingford High School captured two titles at the Bennelong Table Tennis Schools Competition held at Ryde Community and Sports Centre last Friday.

N atio titles for badminton champ Y sahel TEENAGE badminton sensation Ysabel Say of Hornsby is a young sportswoman in a big hurry. Fourteen year old Ysabel stamped herself one of the country's best prospects after clinching two titles at the recent Australian U/ 15 National B a d m i n t 0 n Championships staged at Sydney Olympic Park. The talented schoolgirl turned in skil fu l performances to capture both the singles and doubles trop hies . impressing keen judges with her racquet work, courtcraft and athleticism. Ysabel downed Katrina Lowe 21 -15 21-15 in the singles final after earlier tipping out Stephanie Fan in a semi final and number one seed Chloe Chan in a quarter final. In the doubles decider, Ysabel teamed with Jodee Vega to defeat Lowe and Victoria He 21-13 23-21. outstanding Say' s performances at the National Championships earned her the Jan & Ross Synot Sportsmanship Award which is presented to the player who demonstrates the utmost in sportsmanship by competing in both the team and individual events, showing respect for players and officials, being well-mannered and obliging and showing high dress standards. Ysabel is also the team captain of NSW Thunder who fin ished runners up in the team events in the Val Nesbit

Trophy held at Sydney Olympic Park. The boom youngster was introduced to badminton at the age of her dad 7 when Ferdinand enrolled her and himself in the Australian Badminton Academy managed by Anna Lao. She won her first U/11 Girls Singles in the Sydney Badminton Association Junior Open when she was 10 years old and from there Lao, the ABA coach, asked her to train twice a week. Ysabel 's badminton skills progressed quickly and after a year she started her one on one training with her singles coach Kenny Ng. Training three times a week, her footwork and court speed improved and she complemented her training with social games against her dad at Hornsby PCYC. Last year, she joined the FILBCS club in Castle Hill High School and there she was trained to play doubles with her partner, Jodee Vega under the guidance of Mark Dasco. This year, she was invited to train with the NSW Elite Group on Tuesdays by the All Stars Badminton Association headed by Joe Quiao. She revelled under the coaching of Hoang Pham, who provided the springboard for her national success.

and an ability to perform under pressure have transformed Putney. schoolboy Zane Camroux (pictured) into a NSW junior athletics champton. In an even ly-contested final, young Zane saved his best until last with a final jump of 5 metres 11 to c linch the gold medal in a quality field. It was a moment to savour for the versatile sportsman, who showed charact er and poise to bring home the title after qualifying f ifth for t he final. Zane's good work ethic and dedication paid dividends as the wiry 11 year o ld overcame a nervous

start to edge out his rivals and join a select band of Putney athletes to capture State gold. The Ryde Athletics C lub prodigy spent hours honing his jumping skills w ith father Peter Camroux, a former Balmain half back and premiership-winning Jersey Flegg Cup coach. "Dad is a big inf luence on my sport and is always available for advice on preparation or w orking on my technique," said Zane .

aceman A STUNNING nine wicket haul by paceman Daniel Mclauchlan stole the show as Western Suburbs first grade cricket team dominated day one action of their local derby clash with Sydney at Pratten Park last weekend. McLauchlan grabbed the remarkable figures of 9-85 off 24 overs in one of the finest bowling achievements in Sydney grade cricket in recent seasons. In a fiery spell, the Magpies' speed merchant snared the first five wickets of the match including Sydney's last round centurions Daniel Smith and Tim Sparke for first and second ball ducks respectively. Jacob's timely ton featured six sixes and 14 boundaries with the talented number the seven resurrecting Sydney innings after the visitors were tottering at 5-55 at one stage. Tigers' all rounder Manjot Singh chipped in with a valuable 63 off 107 balls that included 13 boundaries and combined with Jacob for a crucial sixth wicket stand of 90. Fleet footed Sara was recently crowned the fastest 12 year old girl over 1OOm and 200m in NSW after clinching the sprint double at the recent NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Athletics Championships at Homebush. The dynamic Dougan capped a memorable carnival when she spearheaded Villa Maria's talented 4 x 1OOm Girls relay side to a State title triumph with the girls clocking a time of 53.73 sec in the final. It was a special moment for Sara and her team mates Jayda Gursel, Alanna Fisher and Nicolette D'onofrio who dominated this event at district and regional level in the lead up to the State Championships. Sara, a product of Balmain Little Athletics Club, showed courage and tenacity to actually compete at the prestig ious event after breaking her foot before the Regional championships. The Hunters Hill flash recovered in time for the State titles and through sheer dedication was at her explosive best during the meet. Villa Maria's gold medal treble was a tremendous sporting achievement by the Hunters Hill school - a reward for the hard work put in by the squad members under the guidance of Sports

Master Sue Hyatt.
