Thirty former students from Riverside Girls High's leaving Class of 1963 took a trip down memory lane when they visited the school recently for a 50 year Reunion.

There were few dry eyes in the School's common room as students from the choir sang the school song to the la dy visitors who had travelled from as far away as Canada, Perth, Gold Coast as we// as the Central Coast, Newcastle and country NSW. The ladies were guided around the campus and were amazed by the growth of the school, the extensive performance spaces, technology and kitchen facilities and the bright and cheerful make-over of classrooms and hallways.

Air-conditioning, computers, carpeting and undercover areas in the present school are a far cry from the relative sparseness of the school of the 1960s.

A bracket of items from the School's violin ensemble was an impressive finale to the we/come ceremony which preceded lunch.

NSW HOME BUILDING REFORMS TO STRENGTHEN PROTECTION Recently it was my privilege to announce the O'Farreii-Stoner Government's refonns to the Home Building Act 1989.

On coming to Government I committed to a comprehensive review of the State's home building legislation. The current Act has become too complex and unclear with endless disputes between homeowners and builders, impacting the operation of the industry.

Soon after assuming office in 201 1 the Government introduced urgent amendments to the current Act to help stimulate the home building industry. These amendments were effectively a triage action, intended to sustain the industry until a more comprehensive refonn of the legislation could be developed.

In J uly last year the Government released an Issues Paper, Refonn of the Home Building Act, for consultation and more than 600 responses were received.

There has been 15 months of consu~ation with the community, key building groups and industry representatives to help deliver a world class system.

I am pleased to say that the proposed refonns are now publidy available.

They cover various aspects of the home building legislation; dispute resolution, statutory warranties, home building contracts, ownerbuilders obligations, home warranty insurance and licensing.

The Government has struck a balance between providing an appropriate level of homeowner protection and supporting home building activity and investment in NSW. Protecting homeowners as they renovate, build or buy their home helps people in achieving the great Australian dream, while also setting clear ground rules for builders.

The Position Paper, which provides the public and industry with a preview of the refonns before they are introduced to Parliament later this year, is available at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

~...~-:;LETTERS to the Editor Push for more tolerance Dear Sir, Clr Jerome Laxale has been speaking out for more tolerance in the community with widespread support Having said that, it must also be made clear that tolerance is not a one-way street.

All Australians are immigrants and that includes the Aborigines: they have just been here a whole lot longer.

Anybody wanting to live here has to adapt and adopt what has become the Australian way of life.

We welcome new immigrants as they enrich our country. At the same time, they have to respect our culture, they have to integrate (without losing their old traditions). When we all do that, we have a harmonious community.

Problems arise when established citizens - some of whom have gone to war for this country - feel sidelined and disadvantaged compared to illegal immigrants who get more benefits than our pensioners.

Many feel that "political correctness" has gone far too far. Councils bend over backwards to provide information in a multitude of languages so they don't have to bother learning the national language which is English.

"Racism It stops with me" is a good slogan but at this point it will have to be promoted in various foreign languages!

Let's re-visit what the first Prime Minister of Australia Edmund Barton in 1907 had to say on the subject : "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an Australian and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birthplace or origin.

"But this is predicated upon the person 's becoming in every facet an Australian and nothing but an Australian.

"There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an Australian but something else also, isn't an Australian at all.

We have room for but one flag, the Australian flag.

Grateful for Crowle Home Dear Sir, I wish to make one small correction to your article (Crowle's Family Farewell TWT 25.9.2012). William Crowle did not found the home in 1952 - he had already been dead for four years!

However, it was his trustees, Cecil and Lorna Crowle who made the deed of gift of the W.A. Crowle Home, handing it over to the SubNormal Children's Association.

I am one extremely grateful parent that Crowle Home prospered and gave the best possible life for both day students and residents.

Syrians really need a hand Dear Sir, Imagine houses in your street bombed and your neighbours left homeless.

Imagine that every 17 seconds a fellow Australian is forced to flee in fear of their lives.

This is all happening to the people of Syria, most of whom just wish to go to school, work and live a normal life.

Children deserve to laugh, play, and learn each day without the constant threat of death or injury. Their parents, uncles and aunts deserve to have a roof over their heads.

For many of us, Syria seems a long way away, though almost every night our TVs reveal pictures of almost unimaginable suffering.

Every day over 3000 volunteers and staff from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement put their lives on the line to assist those who need medical care, a place to sleep or something to eat.

Syrian Arab Red Crescent is assisting at least two million people a month. The broader Red Cross Movement is also assisting tens of thousands of refugees in Lebanon and Jordan.

Help us to reach out a hand to the people of Syria so they can have at least the basics they need to live and survive through these terrible times.

en see· and chan g challenge a view on others AS WE read this, our world is awash with refugees fleeing from various wars in their homelands and from persecution at the hands of governments or other ethnic groups.

A small trickle of these people is headed in our direction and we hear the sounds of fear and suspicion on all sides because these people may impact on the way we are accustomed to living.

In the gospel we have the wonderful story of the blind beggar, Bartimaeus who has the courage to call out to Jesus in his need.

Because he is an embarrassment and rejected as an unworthy member of his community, the crowds try to silence him but he calls out all the louder.

Finally he gets Jesus' attention and pleads that his eyes may be opened.

Immediately his sight returns and he follows Jesus along the road.

In other words, he starts to live in the light of what he now sees.

This is obviously a story about Jesus and his healing encounter with a blind beggar.

It is also a parable for us as we are confronted with new sight, and we are called to walk in the light of that new sight.

We shrink from the consequences of our seeing and we so easily revert to our old ways of not seeing because they are much less troublesome.

••• OFTEN WHEN we are confronted with uncomfortable truths, we prefer not to see and we call out like the people in the gospel, tryi ng to silence the desire for clearer sight, in case we happen to see differently and then have to change and respond.

Often when we are confronted with uncomfortable truths, we deny the truth its place and prefer to stay with our blindness, for then we can say that we didn't see!

Often when we are confronted with the "inconvenient truth " to borrow AI Gore's film title, we use anger, aggression, name-calling to save ourselves from having to pay attention.

The recent small increase in asylum-seekers looking to come to Australia, is one instance of such an inconvenient truth.

The plight of our homeless youth highlighted in a report this year is another.

Recent UN figures reveal the all too familiar sort of inconvenient global facts: By 2050, the population of the world will increase by 35% to 9.2 billion.

26% of the world's population are farmers.

If the world ate at the rate of Australians, we would need four planets to feed everybody.

By 2050 the global demand for food is expected to double.

Currently in Australia, we waste about one third of the food that we produce.

There are many other inconvenient truths that are impacting on us such as our unnecessary and careless use of energy, the lack of care we have generally for people with mental i 11ness, the plight of our indigenous people whose needs are so often pushed to the edge of our consciousness.

Jesus might be wanting to open your eyes for it is only when our eyes are tru ly opened that we have any chance of knowing the truth and tasting the freedom that comes with it.

ries with around 180 new apartments and three levels of retail/business trading.

It will be located behind the Gladesville shops on the northern side of Victoria Road and will be linked to Victoria Road by the existing arcade.

If the proposal is improved by a State government funded Joint Regional Planning Panel it will be built next year in two stages estimated to take 12 months and nine months respectively.

Several firms involved in the development have given assurances that retail trading at the Glades Village wi ll not be distrupted during the construction period.

The public exhibition was hosted by Hunters Hill Council and the council's facilitator, Steve Kourepis, stressed that the council had no power to approve - or reject - the proposal.

"This is a big development proposal, probably the biggest we've ever had in Hunters Hill," he said.

"The project is worth more than $80 million and therefore it must go to the JRPP which means that council is not the consent authority."

The council is nonetheless hosting a six week, community consultation process.

Concerns raised at the public meeting were mostly about possible traffic congestion generated by the development and were mostly from residents in

neighbouring Massey, Cowell and Venus Streets.

Mayor Richard Quinn attended the meeting and strongly refuted one resident's claim that Hunters Hill Council had already sold the car park at the site ' in a secret deal with developers' pending the JRPP's decision.

One resident who identified herself as a "Venus Street mum" was c lose to tears as she warned her children's lives were at risk from an expected increase in construction trucks.

"My children have nearly been ki lled by delivery trucks breaching the two tonne limit on Venus Street but the council doesn't care how many trucks come down our street, where my c hildren play."

Mr Kourepis gave a commitment that existing traffic concerns will be investigated but added that some Gladesville development issues are the responsibility of neighbouring Ryde City Council.

He also revealed that Ryde Council had taken part in the initial 2005 consultation for the proposed development and it is known that Gladesville RSL wants to partner the council in the jount development of its adjoining car park site.

Supporters of the proposed development argue that it will revitalise Gladesville's as Hunters Hill's major retail shopping outlet.

It will also contain a public 'piazza' area and a 24 hour medical centre.

A spectacular fireworks display to celebrate the Centenary of the Royal Australian Navy will take place off Clarke's Point in Woolwich this Saturday night.

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 7.30 pm and several thousand Sydneysiders are expected to converge on Clarke's Point to watch the show, expected to be twice the size of the New Years Eve 2013 fireworks.

The fireworks will be fired from harbour barges and the best vantage point will be on the southern side of Clarke's Point, facing Drummoyne and the city.

Hunters Hill Mayor Richard Quinn has advised people living outside the municipality to consider using public transport to get to Clarke's Point, due to related road closures.

"The Hunters Hill Peninsula will be closed to traffic at Wool-

wich Road, on the corner of Gladestone Avenue from Spm," he said. ' Ciearway restrictions will also apply between 6am and 11 pm this Saturday, October 5, on Velentia Street, The Point Road, Woolwich Road, Ferry Street, Alexanra Street and Church Street. ' The clearway will be in force on the southern side of these streets, only, with the exception of Valentia and Ferry streets, which will be restricted on both sides."

Mayor Quinn said the traffic restrictions are unavoidable. ' The purpose of the road closure at Woolwich Road is to regulate the volume of traffic entering the viewing area, to prevent congestion and to ensure access for emergency vehicles," he said.

Retired NSW RSL President Godfrey ' Rusty ' Priest OAM passed away last week aged 86 and Premier Barry O'Farrell issued a statement announcing the funeral at 11 am today and all state flags are to be flown at half mast.

Japanese advance in World War Two should be publically recognised alongside the Anzac campaign at Gallipoli.

His belief became a vision and he conceived the Kokoda Track Memorial which was opened in Canada Bay 1996.

The walkway is 800 metres from Concord Hospital which has cared for repatriated war veterens since its inception.

It features walls depicting pivotal moments in Papua New Guinea campaign and a memorial rose garden.

Commuters who travel to and from work in the CBD across the Anzac Bridge may also recall it was Rusty Priest who convinced then Premier Bob Carr to name it in honour of Australian and New Zealand veterans.

Legend has it that - unbeknown to the Premier Rusty Priest had conspired with the sculptor of the bronze Anzac figures, Alan Somerville, to leave a small cavity at the foot of the sculptures.

When the stautues were unveiled on Anzac Day in 2000, Rusty Priest quietly deposited sand from Gallipoli in one of the cavities.

"The idea was that the digger would forever be standing with his mates at Gallipoli," he later revealed.

"Everytime I go across this bridge I'm reminded like Alec Campbell, Jack Lockett and Ted Matthews, the last of the original Anzacs."

Priest had a long a close association with Concord Hospital and served as a member of the NSW Health Mental Health Taskforce and was a member of the Red Cross.

He served on the Australian Vietnam Veterans Trust from 1997 until 2003 and as a member of the Anzac Health and Medical Research Foundation until 201 1.

He chaired the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway Committee until 1995 and was awarded the Order of Australia two years later.

His wife Merle died in 2011 and he is survived by children Michael and CarolAnne and four grandchildren.

Hunters Hill Club bar manager Nic Roche is an adopted Colombian who was instrumental in raising the money at a fundraising event at the club earlier this year.

The money will be used

by FANA (Foundation for Assistance of Abandoned Children) which will support the orphanage's various programs.

Nic, 24, moved from the orphanage when he was three months old.

He organised the fundraiser as a means of giving back and to support the children that he can relate to.

When raising the money, Nic set a $20,000 goal which people told him he would never reach.

This was used as inspiration for Nic and gave him the motivation to reach that goal and raise even more.

FANA has helped families adopt over 15,000 children and with the money raised Nic hopes to give the orphanage some much needed support.

The money wil l go towards projects that the orphanage never had the option to start.

Some of the projects being funded are refurbishing the classrooms and living quarters which Nic has said is his main priority.

Social media will also be introduced as well as updating and re-designing a website to gain more support.

It was then when he was first able to see his family through photos and see his orphanage for the first time.

Nic mentioned that the quote which inspired him to get involved was: "It's not giving a child to a family, but rather giving a family to a child".

Nic who has just turned

various schools and universities and spoke about his friends and family being his main support, including Brittany and Annelise Olsson who helped structure his trip to Colombia.

On the last day of his trip to Colombia, Nic had the chance to hand over a child to a loving family which he described as being very emotional.

With this, he feels that he has come full circle with his orphanage journey.

24, spoke about wanting to start his own family first, or build a support system before meetmg his birth parents face-to-face.

The popular Hunters Hill Club employee is currently studying Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) at Newcastle University and wants to set up his own charity and has said it is his main priority.

Charity Bike ride for Putney couple Robyn and Roger Simionato of Putney love nothing more than getting out on their bicycles.

North Ryde dancer Laree Gadenne (pictured) has just come home as a world champion after a magnificent showing at the World Championship of Performing Arts in Hollywood.

The prestigious internationa! event staged at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in West Hollywood proved to be a memorable experience for 26 year old Laree.

Gadenne, who runs a dance studio, took home a gold medal in the hip-hop d ance event aIong WI"th another seven silver medals to earn herself a $40,000 scholarship.

She now gets the opportunity to attend one of Hollywood's most prestigious dance studios, the Millenium Dance Studio and work with some of the worlds top choreographers.

The Millenium Dance Studio choreographers have

worked on movies such as Moulin Rouge and Step up, and with superstars such as Lady GaGa, Justin Timberlake and Usher.

Laree collected five silver medals in Dance (Lyrical, Jazz, Salsa I Ballroom, Musical Theatre and Open); a s·11ver medal 1·n Dramat·1c Acting plus a silver medal in Photography Modelling.

The World Championship of Performing Arts is the only Olympic-style talent competition and a rare opportunity for the priveleged few selected to participate at an elite world event.

Only four scholarships were handed out and three went to Australians which is

a massive achievement nationally.

Laree was also offered a chance to audition for a two year scholarship at the New York Film and Acting Academy because of winning a silver medal in Dramatic Acting.

After her scholarship, Laree will not only return as a top dancer and dance teacher but she'll also receive full training in vocals and music.

Laree says her dreams have come true, but still hopes to compete next year and turn her silver into all gold medals.

She also says that representing Team Australia was the most incredible experi-

ence and she has made lifelong friends whilst meeting people from over 50 different countries who share the same passion for the performing arts.

Laree hopes that her achievments will inspire all the children she teaches at her business Karizma Dance and Entertainment where she teaches gymnastics and dance for Sports Pro in primary schools all around Sydney.

Flasher on Epping street A flasher could be on the prowl in Epping and police are seeking the help of witnesses to catch him.

Ryde junior athletes stamp their mark WITH the new athletics season now in full swing, Ryde little Athletics can reflect on an amazing 2013 season with 22 little Athletes making the finals in 37 events at the recent State Finals competition.

Ryde Little A's diversity of talent was on display with the club winning gold in middle distance, throws, jumps and sprints.

Little Athletes from Ryde won seven gold medals, three silver and six bronze and if that wasn't enough they set two State records.

Ryde's State athletics champions were Harrison Wade, Maddy Bergfield, Sach i Kayama , S ierra Collender, Jordan Metcalfe, Harry Stevenson, Chiara Lillis, Josh Arcus and Georgia Arcus.

Club captain Maddy Bergfield finished her 11 seasons in Little Athletics with a 40.65m throw in discus to claim gold.

At the same time, distance runner Wade, a TWT Club Six/Ryde

Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Month recipient, clinched the U/13 Boys 3000m setting a new State record of 9.48.55s.

Wade added two silver medals to his weekend haul in the 1500m and 800m.

Kayama went into the final three rounds as the leader with a jump of 5.58m.

In the sixth round Sachi was overtaken for first after a girl jumped a new State record of 5.84m.

Sachi's last jump was huge but her toe was just over the board and she finished with silver.

However she earned a gold medal on the Saturday with a personal best leap of 11.21m in the U/17 Girls Triple jump.

Sachi also says farewell to Little Athletics

after 10 seasons with Ryde.

Metcalf won a bronze in the final of the 60m hurdles and then hit his stride with wins in the U/10 Boys ?Om, 100m and 200m.

Jordan ran under the State record time in the ?Om final, clocking a time of 9.63 sec.

Josh Arcus leapt to an awesome 4.79m in the U/10 Boys long jump to take gold in that event by 20cm.

Stevenson continued his medal winning run at State level and again proved his strength as a very talented middle distance runner w ith bronze in both the U/1 1 Boys 1500m and 800m.

Collender took bronze in the U/15 Girls 3000m with a personal best of nearly half a minute.

Georgia Arcus picked up bronze after crossing fourth in the walk, when one of the first three walkers was disqualified.

Lillis missed silver by a centimetre in the long jump to claim bronze with a jump of 3.87m.

Police report the flasher unzipped his pants and exposed himself to a 28 year old woman in Edensor Street around ?am last Friday.

The woman fled the scene and gave his description to police.

"The male is described as Caucasian, fairly light coloured skin, about 180cm tall, with large dark sunglasses covering most of his face," police said.

POLICE ROUNDS around 9am on Thursday by a member of the public who noticed smoke coming from bushland in the walking track between Sutherland Road and Callistemon Close at Cheltenham.

The incident was attended by Fire Rescue NSW and had burned an area the size of a large truck.

In other police news, a Harris Park man failed a Random Breath Test in Marsfield.

Police report the 36 year old was stopped 11 pm on around Wednesday and returned a positive roadside test before he was taken to Eastwood Police Station, where he returned a reading of 0.086.

His license was suspended and he is due to appear in Ryde Local Court on October 16.

A 23 year old man was issued with a Cannabis Caution in Marsfield around 3am on Friday.

Dumped waste an eyesore Tons o f domestic waste was dumped at Shepherds Bay last week following Ryde City Council's recent move to erect signs in the area prohibiting rubbish dumping.

The waste was dumped directly under all three recently erected council warn ing signs at the cliff face opposite the main entry to Shepherds Bay Village mall.

It is not the first time dumpers have defied the council and it quickly reappears despite council efforts to remove it.

The dumped waste has also attracted scavengers looking for quality items including new mattresses, electrical equipment and children 's toys.

Shirley inspired by Rome trip An Epping student has just returned from Rome where she has been inspired to start a youth advocacy service for deaf impaired young people.

Shirley Liu (pictured) from The Boulevard in Epping led a small delegation of deaf Australians at the World Federation for the Deaf Youth and wants to trial a European style idea for youth advocacy.

"What struck me most in Rome was that some European nations have very strong youth organisations and youth

know the council hates waste being dumped here and hates it so much it will send its own men down to remove it.

"Word soon gets around that it (council) will pay to have your rubbish removed for you for free, as long as you drop it off in Shepherds Bay, next to the council signs."

Neighbouring Hunters Hill Council is considering erecting surveillance cameras in known dumping areas and in locations where the cameras can't be vandalised.

language."

Despite language and other cultural differences, she stressed there was unity in diversity in Rome.

"Many of the issues we face are the same and there are unique and common issues shared by young (deaf) people."

SUTHERLAND international Steve Smith stands between a potential Sydney victory when play resumes this Saturday in the opening round of the 2013-14 Sydney first grade cricket competition.

The talented Smith, who established himself as a regular batsmen in Australia's middle order during the recent Ashes series in England, lines up for the Sharks in second day action at Glenn McGrath Oval with the home side precariously placed at 6-158.

Smith top scored for NSW with 70 in last Sunday's Ryobi Cup victory over Tasmania at Bankstown Oval and is hungry for more runs in preparation for the Ashes down under this summer.

Locals hail God-like Saintly Balmain Boy Tigers skipper Robbie Farah was the toast of Papua New Guinea at the weekend and revered in Godlike adoration by an army of devoted fans.

Robbie is well known and loved in PNG with a large fan followers group as this was his fourth visit as an Australian team member and he's top of the pops among the locals.

Wherever he goes he is mobbed by admiring fans who want to touch him and show their love and support for the Balmain boy.

Robbie says the people there have a real love and passion for rugby league.

It's unbelievable he says.

Rugby league is a religion there and they treat the Aussie footballers like gods, he says.

"They adore us, they want to touch us and get a photograph with us", Robbie says.

Fans packed Kolobond stadium at Kokopo PNG to see the Australian PM's

13 play the local Kumuls for an unsurprising 50 10 result which none of the locals expected anything else. Nor were they disappointed. After all they were playing the Gods team.

Robbie can now come down from the clouds and set his feet firmly on the ground and prepare for the 2014 NRL season when we all will look forward to grand final glory in three grades.

Meantime Robbie will be down to earth at this Friday's Tigers Grand Final Luncheon at le Montage. See ya there.
