The Federal Reserve has begun what it says will be a series of interest rate increases in an effort to slow the economy and temper the current surge in the inflation rate. At the start of 2022, The Fed’s Raising Rates. the federal What Does It Mean for funds rate stood at You? near zero percent. By May, the Fed moved the federal funds rate 75 basis points (0.75%) higher. What does this mean for your money? While Fed actions directly impact large financial institutions, they also resonate throughout the financial markets. In indirect ways, your personal finances can be affected by Fed policy. Four ways the Fed’s rate hikes in 2022 could impact your bottom line: #1 – Higher borrowing costs While the Fed’s rate hikes don’t directly affect most types of consumer loans, the direction the Fed sets on interest rates tends to carry over throughout debt markets. when Mom handed the chair down to me, my cat loved to sit in the highchair. Kitty Toto would let her tail hang down between the spindles, waving it back and forth as she kept watch on my dog Harry, sleeping below. Harry was a beautiful tan and white collie with accents of black. When he laid on the floor, he would sweep his black tail back and forth – especially when he was dreaming. The movement mesmerized the cat. Harry and Kitty Toto eventually passed on, but the high chair was still with me. When I married Melissa, she had two cats, Salem and Eve. They also enjoyed the chair. One day we brought home a puppy named June. June liked to chase the cats. The cats, in turn, would run, seeking a higher place for refuge. The highchair often served that purpose until June got taller. Eventually, the cats had to stand up to June. Being curious, June wanted to sniff Eve while the cat sat in a chair. Eve would relentlessly bat at the dog’s nose. The cat was declawed, and

June seemed to enjoy the contact. On the other hand, Salem would hiss and snarl. “June! Leave the cats alone.” The dog heard that repeatedly as she grew. When June turned away, Salem would attack June’s constant waving tail as the dog retreated. June had the most beautiful tail. It was long and black with a white tip, making it

look like a paintbrush. The tail was sleek on top, bushy on the bottom. Most of the time, her tail was curled upward and never stopped wagging. We called it the tail of destruction as more than one coffee cup, glass, or anything else, sitting on the coffee table, was launched away by the quick motion of her tail. In time, Salem and Eve passed away. However, we still had June and the highchair. For June’s seventh birthday, we presented her with a cat. Welcome, Edgar Allan, a spirited black kitten with an unusually long tail. He enjoyed brushing and waving his tail in the dog’s face. If that didn’t get June’s attention, Edgar would sit in the highchair waiting for the dog to pass by and then taunt her by attacking her swooshing tail. But, of course, Edgar was just playing, trying to engage the dog to chase him. Because June was so used to hearing, “Leave the cat alone,” she would only oblige the feline if she thought no human was watching.

FUN DAY! SATURDAY, JUNE Deli 18TH! Full-Service

Close Observation I have a great view from my home office window. I overlook the lake, hills, and the timber on the far side of the dam. It does though sometimes become distracting when something more interesting is happening outside than I am doing in the office. On Friday, I was working on some business tax stuff, which is never very exciting. My eyes wandered from my computer screen to the lawn and the lake beyond. Suddenly, I saw a doe and her fawn walking across the lawn past my window. The fawn was bouncing along happily while its mother cautiously led the way. Jag was up on the porch in his favorite watch dog chair and fast asleep. Billie was on the rug beside my desk, also catching up on his much-needed sleep. Neither dog noticed the prowlers crossing their yard. The doe and fawn continued across the yard and off into the timber without being challenged. An hour or

so later, after working intently on more tax forms, I decided to take a break. As I slid my chair away from the desk and stood up, I spooked a deer that had been standing un-noticed, right outside of my window. My movement caught her eye, and she was as startled as I was. I was not expecting to see a deer three feet away any more than she was expecting to see me. She made a hasty exit, and I went upstairs for coffee, just a little bit rattled by the close encounter.

Early Saturday morning, while drinking coffee on the porch, I noticed an unusual number of butterflies flying around. There were a few monarch butterflies and a couple of other types with which I am familiar, but most of them were smaller brown ones with white spots. The longer I sat there, the more I was surrounded by them. My wife and I went for a Ranger ride in the early afternoon where we saw hundreds or perhaps thousands of these smaller brown

and white butterflies. They would land on our hats or collect on the Ranger. They drove the dogs crazy by landing on them. I do not know where they came from or why they decided to congregate at our house but by Monday morning, they were gone. Perhaps they were migrating and just happened to stop at our place for a rest. One other observation I have made is we have more raccoons than I have time or energy to deal with. With daily live trapping them and taking them for a ride far away, I was wasting time and gasoline in a losing battle. If I prevented one from getting in the grape jelly and other things I put

out for the birds, there were two raccoons ready to take his place. I came up with the solution of taking the bird seed and jelly into the garage every night. When I let the dogs back out in the morning, I also take the bird feed out. This solution seems to be working as the birds only eat during the day and the raccoons eat mostly at night. If a rebel raccoon decides to try to get a free meal during the day, Jag, the terrier will probably show him the error of his ways. I must say, if a person keeps their eyes open and pays attention, they can make some unique observations about nature.

(Financial cont’d from pg 1) the interest rate earned.

• Home mortgages – Adjustable-rate mortgages will be the most directly affected, as they change in conjunction with general interest rate trends in the market. If you have a fixed rate mortgage, you won’t see any change. • Automobile loans – While a variety of factors affect how interest rates are set on vehicle loans, you can expect these rates to increase as well. • Student loans – Federal student loan rates are set and will not be directly affected. However, borrowers working with private lenders will likely see rates move higher as they are tied to the fed funds rate.

#3 – The bond market Fed interest rates strategies don’t impact the bond market directly, but Fed policy is watched closely by bond investors. This year, along with raising short-term rates, the Fed has also begun reducing the role it plays as a buyer in the broader bond market. That action could lessen demand for longer-term bonds, which can drive up interest rates. Even before the Fed initiated its new policies, the bond market already anticipated the change and interest rates began moving higher on most types of bonds
