Childlike Sydney let her daughters open one present each from under the Christmas tree before dinner. I watched with curious interest while my six-yearold granddaughter wrote on her new drawing tablet that she’d just received for Christmas. She sat on her knees in the chair at the head of the dining room table. Her tongue stuck out the corner of her mouth as she focused intensely on writing her message. She used her right hand to push her long brown hair behind her ear, but her hair fell back into her face as she started writing again. I smiled when she dotted an I with a big heart; however, I couldn’t read her message from my angle. “What did you write on your tablet, Evelyn?” Evelyn blushed a little, then held the screen where I could see it. She read aloud, “I love my family.” That got me. Suddenly, I felt the warmth of the Christmas spirit rush through my heart. I hugged her, “That’s very nice,” and said, “I love
you, Evelyn.” Then asked, “Will you hold your message so I can take your picture?” She looked adorable in her oversized knit sweater with broad horizontal yellow, pink, blue, and gray stripes. Her hair draped over her shoulder, and her soft brown eyes framed by her big glasses melted my heart. I looked at the photo on my cell phone and told her, “That’s a keeper. You’re a keeper.” Evelyn smiled with approval. “You need to put that up for now, Ev,” her mother told her. “It’s time to eat.” Eve hopped down from the chair, took her new toy to the living room, then returned, and sat down. Sydney set a plate of food down for each of her daughters. I went to the kitchen to get my dinner, then sat in the chair next to Evelyn. I was hungry and wasted no time digging in. I wanted to post Ev’s photo, so I ate rather quickly.
While the family finished eating, I opened my phone and Facebook page. Ev softly said something to me, but I didn’t hear her, so I asked her to repeat herself. “I said no screens at the table, Papa.” I hesitated for a moment, then explained to my granddaughter that I wanted to get her photo posted. Ev reminded me, “It’s your rule, Papa. You made the rule, ‘no screens at the table.’” Wow, I felt like a deer in headlights. I was just put in my place by a six-year-old and I had no rebuttal. “Yes, that is correct, Ev, and the rule is for everybody – including me,” I said as returned my cell phone to my pocket. “Thank you for reminding me.” I accepted Evelyn’s correction with grace and humility. All the while silently acknowledging, ‘Yo, Papa. You were just out-witted (Just the Other Day cont’d on pg 5)

Somebody Else’s Hunt Tuesday morning, my wife and I were watching the news and drinking coffee, trying to instill some motivation for the upcoming day. Shortly before 7:00, the telephone rang. Since it was closer to my wife, she had to answer it. The message she received seemed rather urgent but provided little detail. The information my wife received and conveyed to me was that Damon was with the coyote hunters starting on a road about a mile west of the house, moving to the east. I might want to cover the area around our lake in case a coyote breaks into the open there. When a coyote is on the move, they can cover a lot of ground in a hurry. If they do not want to be pushed, it can take a long time to cover that mile. To be sure, I wanted to get in position as quickly as possible. My rifle still had the 350 Legend on the upper from deer season. Though the 350 would work well to bring down a coyote, the 5.56 upper has much greater long-range accuracy. I quickly switched barrels, put on a heavy coat, and went to the porch to wait. The porch makes a perfect spotting point to cover open areas up to 800 yards away in some places. I pulled up a chair, braced the rifle barrel on the porch railing and began scanning for move-

ment. The breeze was cold as it circled around the side of the house and hit me in the face. It did not take long before I sneaked back into the house for another cup of coffee. I continued to scan the area with binoculars and the rifle scope. Though I was hoping, I did not hear the baying of dogs, hot on the trail of a coyote. About fifty geese and a dozen swans floated around the island, staying out of the wind. I saw a half dozen deer come down from the top gate to the water’s edge to get a drink. They did not seem to be getting away from the dogs or hunters. Something spooked a turkey that flew down toward the dam. I took this as a good sign that action was headed my way. An eagle circled around and went back toward the west. This was not a good sign. If a bunch of dogs and hunters were coming through the timber, he would not be flying toward them. After sitting in the cold for an hour or so, I decided to call Damon to see what was going on. The neighbors had a calf get out, so the group of hunters were working at getting it back in. They should be turning the dogs loose in a few minutes. That seemed like a good time to go inside, warm up, and get another
cup of coffee. I stayed inside until the feeling returned to my fingers and toes. I also put on a few more clothes. I was more prepared for the weather when I again resumed my watch position on the porch. I had only been back out there for about ten minutes and rather enjoying the hunt when Damon called again. When they cast the dogs, they picked up the trail of a coyote going west. The dogs were headed the wrong way if they were going to get any help from me. I returned inside to comfort of my chair near the coffee pot. I did not have any results from somebody else’s hunt, but I also had little invested in the effort except time.
