Rubber Eggs

I do the grocery shopping for our house, mostly because I enjoy it, and I’m pretty good at it. Granted, I take more time shopping than most people. But, I like to stop and talk and meet new people. Grocery shopping is a social event as I see it. The rising cost of groceries is often the topic of conversation in the aisles these days. Sometimes we’ll talk about ways to save money. My mom fed a large family on a limited budget; I picked up on that from her, and I’ve always been quite thrifty when shopping. With higher food prices, it’s more important than ever to save where you can. It would seem logical that when buying the larger quantity of a product, the cost per ounce would be lower; that’s not always so. Using the calculator on my flip phone, I’ve discovered that the regular size package of Oreo cookies is usually a better value than the bigger “family size” package; the same is frequently true with Cheerios and many other products. So I’ll compare the prices per ounce, then take the better deal, but not the cookies. (Although I’m a recovering Oreo addict, I still keep track of the prices.) Fortunately, my pricing revelation seldom carries into the meat department, where bigger is cheaper. Even though only two people live at my house, I will buy the big “value pack” of ground beef, chicken, pork chops, steaks, and beef or pork roast. I save a substantial amount per pound this way. I break the meat down into portions for two at home and freeze it. I buy whole hams at around two dollars per pound rather than packaged ham steaks at close to seven dollars per pound. Chicken breasts with the bone in are generally less expensive. The breasts are usually too thick anyway, so I cut them the way I like them, then boil the rest. The

When I’ve finished boiling the chicken, I put the cooled water in quart-size freezer bags; this saves another three dollars per package for recipes that call for chicken broth.

a full carton at home, and I like to keep two or three dozen on hand because really fresh eggs are lousy to peel for hard-boiled eggs. I grabbed two dozen large grade A’s, quickly lifting the lids to check for cracked shells. All were good.

Next, I cruised to the bread section in the back corner of the building. I looked for I put these packages on a Sarah Lee, Old Style 12 tray, so everything freezes Grain, but they didn’t have flat, not rounded; it’s easier it, so I grabbed a loaf of to stock the freezer that way Brownberry 12 Grain. (I had to make in an empty plastic grocery my own screeching tire bag. Maybe it was just this noises.) We had less than particular brand.

I pulled into the Kwik Trip across the street, seeking a second opinion. I bought another snack pack with two boiled eggs. The packaging was much easier to open, but the eggs were just as rubbery, and I was still hungry. I finished the first egg, placed the second in the plastic grocery sack, and started for home. On the way out of Two Harbors, I stopped at the Holiday station on the edge of town. Certainly, they would have better hard-boiled eggs. I grabbed a two-pack of eggs. When I got to the truck, I was disappointed to find yet another batch of rubbery eggs. I finished the first and added the second to my collection in the plastic sack. The stop at Holiday wasn’t a total waste of time; as long as I was there, I got a fresh cup of coffee for the ride home, and….” At home, I put the twelve Snickers bars in a bag and hid them in the freezer behind the frozen chicken broth on the top shelf. I didn’t want to waste the remaining rubberized eggs, so I put them in the fridge and grabbed a boiled egg from the container of eggs I cooked. I bit into it, “Mmm. This is how hard-boiled eggs should be.” By the time that promotion ended at Holiday, I had stopped a total of eight times for coffee. So, do the math; I’ve got a great stash, and they’ll keep forever in the freezer. But, the bag was becoming large and more noticeable. So, I relocated the Snickers to the second shelf, tucking them in behind the frozen butter and walnuts that I stock up on when they were on sale.

gar’s mischievous hand was involved. So finally, I gave up and opened the refrigerator, looking for something to snack on. The bright yellow lemons in the produce drew my attention. Melissa had suggested using them to make hot toddies, but I had a different idea. You know the old saying, “When life gives you lemons – make a lemon meringue pie.” And that’s just what I did. When the pie came out of the oven, it needed to chill for several hours. While I shuffled things around to make room in the refrigerator, I came across the rubber eggs. “Good Lord, are these still in here?” I put the pie in the fridge. I took the three rubbery eggs outside and put them by the street. Nothing goes to waste around here. We have all kinds of wildlife around our place; certainly, something would come by and enjoy those eggs – rubbery or not. The next morning, the sun was shining, and it was a beautiful winter’s day. While Melissa sat in the dining room, feasting on lemon meringue pie for breakfast, I heard two ravens chattering outside. “Rawk, rawk. Rawk, rawk, rawk, rawk!” the first raven complained. The second scavenger replied, “Rawk, rawk. Rawk, rawk, rawk. Rawk, rawk, rawk.” Translation: “Hey Bob, how in the heck can anyone mess up a hard-boiled to make it this rubbery.” Bob replied, “I have no idea, Larry. It’s like chewing a superball. These are tougher than those frozen Snickers bars that black cat threw out here last week.”

About a week later, I looked for my Snickers in the freezer. “Where did they go?” I poked around and couldn’t I looked at my wife and find them. Did Melissa find smiled, “How’s the pie, my hidden treasure and Honey?” make away like a pirate? For some reason, I sensed Ed-
