Council Ponders Bridge Name and Confederate Statue Changes Dick Gregory Dies at 84 With the recent national debate and protest over Confederate monuments being removed along with the violence and deaths in Charlottesville, Savannah Mayor Eddie Deloach proposed that the Savannah City Council send a resolution to the state legislature to rename the Talmadge Bridge. The bridge is named after former Govenor Eugene Talmadge who held segregationist and white supremacist ideals.

The state must approved the renaming of the bridge as prescribed by Georgia law. As the debate of the resolution continued the issue of the Confederate Monument in Forsyth Park surfaced. After much discussion it was recommended that the resolution to the state be put on hold and a public forum be held to recieve feedback from the community. No date for the forum has been set as of yet. A free panel discussion

to consider changing the name of the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at the Savannah Theater (222 Bull Street, off Chippewa Square). The event will commence at 6:30 pm and last until 8:30 pm. The discussion will be moderated by former Mayor of Savannah, Dr. Otis S. Johnson, and is sponsored by Span the Gap and the Beach Institute.

ATLANTA – State Representative Vernon Jones (D-Lithonia) announced that he will introduce legislation that would create a state commission on historic monuments during the 2018 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly. “The recent events in Charlottesville, Va., have spurred on calls for the removal of historical mon-

uments and artifacts that honor a dark era in Georgia’s history,” said Rep. Jones. “While I have my personal beliefs on the matter, I propose that a bipartisan, systematic and transparent study be conducted in an effort to arrive at an inclusive solution.” Should this legislation pass and be enacted, this commission would hold statewide hearings to discuss historic monuments and artifacts, and would make recommendations to the governor and the General Assembly regarding monument placement and the possibility of adding new monuments that hold historic value to the citizens of Georgia. “Hysteria and knee jerk reactions are not the solution. Sensitive subjects

such as this deserve calm, practical and open dialogue. A house divided cannot stand, and Georgians must show the nation that we can unite for the greater good,” added Rep. Jones. Commission members would reflect and represent a broad spectrum of interest on the subject, and would include, but not be limited to, preservationists, historians and advocacy groups. Representative Vernon Jones represents the citizens of District 91, which includes portions of DeKalb and Rockdale counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2016, and currently serves on the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Human Relations & Aging, and Transportation committees.

Our 55th Reunion was held in conjunction with Beach high school’s 150th year celebration. The class has been meeting somewhere every five or ten years to celebrate. This was a special year to coincide our 55th Reunion with our Alma Mater’s 150th year. What a blessing to be alive! Our weekend activities started with a fish fry/low country boil at the home Lemuel and Beatrice Campbell in Liberty City. The activities continued with a get acquainted on Friday evening at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront. Satur-

day evening was grand as Barbara Robinson Pulliam and Edna Branch Jackson took us down memory lane to look at how far we have come and survive. We were served great food and danced the night away. The class closed out the weekend with an inspiring sermon by Reverend Harold Edwards, Sr. of Fairlawn Baptist Church. After lunch, together we all headed home until the next reunion. We offered a silent prayer for those classmate who are no longer with us. As alums of A. E. Beach High School Class of 1962

we continue to advocate for truth, honor, and love, which are the hallmarks of the school’s motto. One of our most impactful service is the awarding of annual scholarships to graduating seniors from our beloved Alma Mater. “Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn: The Saga of Two Families and the Making of Atlanta” The book, heads for Hollywood with Auburn Avenue Films in charge of the deal

Atlanta, GA. The latest news from Atlanta’s film industry is that Wendy Eley Jackson, and Maynard Jackson III have optioned the book, “Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn,” written by Gary Pomerantz and are developing it for television! Auburn Avenue Films, the film production company owned by the Jackson team, recently inked an agreement with Pomerantz to turn the book into a television series. More importantly, they are well on their way to finding a home for the production. Atlanta, Georgia is a hot town when it comes to making movies; and Auburn Avenue Films has caught the fever with the making of the documentary film, MAYNARD, which is set to be released in 2018. With a more than qualified production team, highlighted by the award-winning Sam Pollard as director, MAYNARD, the movie about the life and times of Atlanta’s first Black Mayor, is the first major project in a line of ventures for this new film company. “The book was published in 1996. That’s 21 years ago,” said Pomer-

antz. “However, when Wendy and Maynard III approached me earlier this year, I could feel their interest. It was palpable. It was authentic. This story is deeply personal to them. I’ve always believed that the story of the Dobbses and the Allen’s was not only historic, but cinematic. It’s got drama, flashpoints and enormous historic sweep, from Civil War through civil rights.” “I am delighted that we are working together,” Pomerantz added. Auburn Avenue Films, Inc., organized in 2015, is a collaborative team of talented multi-cultural minds. Based in the heart of Atlanta, the team, that consists of industry A-listers, thrives on taking concepts and transforming them into experiences that tell stories. Whether it’s a studio made motion picture and television project, independent films or digital entertainment, the partners use their creative assets to create inspiration and innovative stories. “I have been in the film industry for 25 years,” said Wendy. “It was Maynard III who wanted to do a movie about his father’s legacy which launched Auburn Avenue Films. We have been crossing the country for the past three years and have met some wonderful people in the film industry who have helped us because this is a great product.. We are moving forward with the Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn project,” said Wendy and Maynard III. “Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn: The

Saga of Two Families and the Making of Atlanta” is a magnificent piece of writing, a beautiful tapestry of prose in which the stories of two of Atlanta’s most celebrated families have been woven densely into the history of the city itself. It helps, of course, that these are not just any families: one is that of Ivan Allen Jr., the city’s next-to-last white Mayor, who was descended from a rich and proud Confederate slave-owning family, and whose father was a segregationist businessman who did much to forge the city’s modern identity. The other family is that of Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr., the city’s first black Mayor, who was descended from slaves and whose grandfather was John Wesley Dobbs, one of the city’s most prominent black leaders,” said Paul Goldberger, New York Times. “In their own ways, the Dobbses and Allens saved Atlanta from itself. They kept it from burning again, and the modern city rose,” so says Pomerantz. It is time to tell the world this story.

faith and their moral integrity. The Blessed Pius X High School was built at the cost of $85,000. The school opened in 1952, with the 9th and 10th grades. In 1955, the schools name was changed to St. Pius X, due to his canonization. In 1955 the first class graduated with fourteen students. For nineteen years, the school exceeded expectations. Its graduation rate was high and the college entry rate, which surpassed other local schools, ran between 78% - 98%. A combination of priests, nuns and lay teachers taught a dual curriculum of classical education and self-sufficiency skills. The student body was successful in debate, leadership, team sports and academic competitions. As the late sixties saw many changes in the country with the advancement of civil rights, integration on all levels of society, the Diocese saw the need to meet federal mandates. This was accomplished by closing St. Pius X High School. Much to the consternation of students, the parents and the parishes, St. Pius X High School graduated its last class in 1971. Beautiful Zion Church Celebrates 42nd Church Anniversary

Beautiful Zion Church proudly announce our 42nd Annual Church Anniversary to be held Sunday, August 27, at 3:00 pm.

The speaker will be Dr. Rev. James Milner from Chapel of Christian Love, Atlanta GA.

Draw Closer To God Evangelist Rachel Thomas As I received this topic from God to write this article, I wondered how I could tell anyone how to draw closer to God. Prayer is one way to do so. God wants us to come aside and be with him in prayer. He wants us to just talk to Him and understand that He hears us and that He will answer us if we Believe! God wants you to know that He is a Good God, a Kind God and a Loving God who cares for all of our needs, therefore I have learned to take time away from everything and come into His presence – first of all in thanksgiving. God has done so very much for me and my family and I just

want to thank Him first of all for Life and all He has done; is doing and will do. We cannot thank Him enough because he sent His one and only Son to die for our sins and to take away All of our sicknesses and diseases. He is a Great and Awesome God. His word says, “in the Beginning was the WORD and WORD was with God and the WORD was God meaning Jesus! God wants us to pray His word. There are different kinds of prayers such as secret prayers, family prayers, group prayers and public prayers. We have different parts of a prayer like adoration, confession, supplication, intercession

Seniors Rule!

Senior citizens are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population and have been for the past two decades, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. In fact, there are more people between the ages of 80 and 90 years of age and more individuals over 100 in America than ever before.

### Crime Stoppers

Police in Singapore appear to have a lot of time on their hands. The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] says the island nation has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Police there recently conducted a major investigation to find the culprit who left three toothpicks on the seat of a city bus. They nabbed a 60-year-old suspect who faces the possibility of two years in jail for that offense. The Singapore police caught a serial litterbug a few years back who had been tossing cigarette buts out of the window of his apartment. His punishment: a nearly $15,000 fine. ###

Gracious, spacious living

International house hunters in London might want to consider a new 1,500 sq. ft., four story, luxury town home that will soon be built in the city’s historic Fitzrovia neighborhood, suggests the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The developer believes that the place could fetch

That’s just six feet and a few inches wider than the doorway of an average American home. And, if that’s a bit too pricey for your budget, you may want to consider the 7-foot wide home that is on the market in London’s fashionable Kensington neighborhood. The asking price for that house is less than $2 million.

A real diamond jubilee

Margaret Mussel of New Jersey lost her diamond engagement ring while on a trip to Italy nine years ago. Mary Grams lost hers 13 years ago on a farm near Edmonton, Canada. All’s well that ends well, says the Association of Mature American Citizen. AMAC reports that both of them coincidentally got their rings back earlier this month. Mrs. Mussel’s husband spotted his wife’s ring sparkling in the Italian sunshine, embedded in a local sidewalk, while on a return trip to Italy. Mrs. Grams’ daughter-in-law found hers gracing a carrot growing on the family farm.

### Just in time for all those Labor Day barbecues

The Swiss boast that they invented the cuckoo clock. Perhaps soon they will take credit for inventing the Insect Burger, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. In fact, a Swiss supermarket chain recently started selling burger patties made from the larvae of the mealworm beetle. “They have a high culinary potential, their production saves resources and their nutritional profile is high-quality. Thus, insects are the perfect complement to a modern diet,” says Christian Bartsch, co-founder of Essento, the company that invented the bug burger.

### Attention all Star Trek fans

Toyota has applied for a U.S. Patent on what the carmaker calls a “cloaking device,” says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The company says it doesn’t intend for a whole car to disappear, the way TV aliens made their space ships disappear on Star Trek. It just wants drivers to see through their cars’ roof pillars in order to give them an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the road.
