TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE - AUGUST 21st

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. The path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Salem, OR (9:05 a.m. PDT) to Charleston, SC (2:48 p.m. EDT). Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk. The lunar shadow leaves the United States at 4:09 EDT. Looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”), when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality. The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.

White Supremacists’ Rally Turns Renaming the Talmadge Bridge Violent, 19 Injured, One Dead White Supremacist Murder Suspect Jailed after Charlottesville Attack

James Alex Fields Jr., a 20 yearold from Ohio, is accused of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death. (Albemarle Regional Jail) By Freddie Allen (Managing Editor, NNPA Newswire)

James Alex Fields Jr., a 20 year-old from Ohio, who drove his dark gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people protesting a White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, August 12 showed a deep interest in Nazism and Adolph Hitler in high school. Fields is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to

stop in an accident that resulted in death, according to CNN. ABC News reported that Derek Weimer, Fields’ former world history teacher at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, Kentucky, said that Fields was “fairly quiet,” “smart,” and also an open admirer of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Weimer also told ABC News that Fields thought the Nazis “were pretty cool guys.” According to ABC News, “Some of Fields’ classmates at the school recalled a trip to Europe a group of students took after graduation in 2015, when they visited the Dachau concentration camp. Two of the students on the trip said when they arrived at the concentration camp, Fields said, ‘This is where the magic happened.’” The ABC News report continued: “Weimer noted that Randall K. Cooper High School is not particularly diverse, and said that as a result, he didn’t have

many opportunities to see Fields interact with many non-whites or Jewish people.” We i m e r t o l d A B C News that the student body at Randall K. Cooper High School was about four percent Black. Last weekend, White nationalists descended on the college town to protest the removal of a statute of Robert E. Lee, the infamous general of the Confederacy. “A career army officer, Lee didn’t have much wealth, but he inherited a few slaves from his mother. Still, Lee married into one of the wealthiest slave-holding families in Virginia—the Custis family of Arlington and descendants of Martha Washington,” the Chicago Tribune reported. “When Lee’s father-in-law died, he took leave from the U.S. Army to run the struggling estate and met resistance from slaves expecting to be freed.” According to the Tribune, “Documents show See Charlottesville-Page 4A

One slave said Lee was one of the meanest men she had ever met.” Fields’ mother, Samantha Bloom, told the Associated Press, that she thought her son was attending a political rally, “that had something to do with Trump” and that she tried to stay out of her son’s political views. Media reports have described Heather Heyer, the lone fatality in Saturday’s tragedy, as a 32 yearold paralegal from Greene County, Va., and a supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.). Heyer was in Charlottesville to protest against the White nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer called Heyer’s killing and the injury of others by a vehicle at a rally in the city a “terrorist attack with a car used as a weapon,” according to ABC News.

ATLANTA – Keeping families safe and natural gas flowing to homes and businesses is Atlanta Gas Light’s highest priority. That’s why on National 811 Day, Atlanta Gas Light is joining other utility companies, one-call centers, damage prevention advocates and professional contractors in an effort to raise awareness of calling 8-1-1.
Each year, Aug. 11 (8/11) serves as a reminder to the public to call 8-1-1 before starting an outdoor digging project, such as putting in a mailbox, planting a flowerbed and building a deck. Dialing 8-1-1 prevents injuries, property damages and inconvenient outages. When making the free call to 8-1-1, homeowners

and contractors are connected to the one call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies (natural gas, electric, water, sewer, telephone and cable lines) of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Once lines have been accurately marked, digging can begin. Atlanta Gas Light is providing the following safe digging guidelines for homeowners and contractors: Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig: When starting an outdoor project involving digging, make contacting Georgia 811 at 8-1-1 or 1800-282-7411 part of your plans.

In a statement about the violence and the White nationalist march in Charlottesville, Neera Tanden, the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, said that events over the weekend are another stark and disturbing reminder that violent extremism continues to exist in our neighborhoods and communities. “All of us at the Center for American Progress condemn in the strongest possible terms the racist and derogatory rhetoric and behavior on display,” said Tanden. In a statement from his New Jersey golf club, President Donald Trump said that he condemned the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides.” Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said that the White nationalists’ protest represented a turning point for this country. We are determined to take this country back. We’re gonna fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in,” Duke said in a video posted to Twitter. “That’s why we voted for Donald Trump because he said he’s going to take our country back.” Facing sharp criticism for the president’s initial response to the tragedy, the White House issued a follow-up statement that included a stronger rebuke of “White supremacists, KKK Neo-Nazi and all extremist groups.” Ta n d e n s a i d t h a t throughout the campaign and in his brief presidency, Trump has had many opportunities to not just fully distance his administration from those allied with Nazi sympathizers and the KKK but also to denounce them. “To be clear, there is only one side that wishes to provoke hate and violence, and there is only one side that committed an apparent act of terrorism [in Charlottesville,” said Tanden. “Nazis and White nationalists showed up to cause harm and unrest in Charlottesville. Their racism, hatred, and bigotry have no place in our society.” Dr. Benjamin F. Cha-

vis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) tweeted that the Black Press condemned the racial hatred and violence in Charlottesville. “Love presupposes justice, equality, freedom, and empowerment. Hate renders only more hatred,” Chavis tweeted. Echoing Tanden’s concerns about the president’s dithering remarks about the White nationalist movement, Congressman Cedric Richmond, (D-La.) said that since the campaign, President Trump has encouraged and emboldened the type of racism and violence that occurred in Charlottesville. “This is a president after all who has two White supremacists working for him in the White House— Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller,” said Richmond. “For these reasons, we weren’t surprised President Trump couldn’t bring himself to say the words ‘White supremacy,’ ‘White supremacists,’ and ‘domestic terrorism’ when he addressed the nation’ on Saturday. He instead chose to use racially coded dog whistles like ‘law and order’ and false equivalencies like ‘many sides.’ Richmond continued: “Where is Attorney General Sessions? Instead of suppressing votes and dismantling affirmative action, he should be working with the Department of Homeland Security to investigate today’s crimes. Where is the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security?” Richmond noted that the CBC urged Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security to investigate this sort of domestic terrorism, months ago. “As 49 members who represent and are part of a community who has for centuries been victimized by White supremacists, we strongly condemn what happened in Charlottesville,” said Richmond in the statement. “We also condemn the Administration’s poor response to it.”

Sports Grambling Faces NCAA Penalties

Grambling State’s athletic program has been put on probation by the NCAA and it will forfeit one of its football championships. GSU discovered multiple NCAA violations, including using ineligible players between 2010 and 2015. They self-reported so the NCAA looked into it. As a result, the university has to vacate some of its football wins, including the 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship. Violations include: failing to properly certify 45 student-athletes in 11 sports, yielding 45 infractions in baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, softball, women’s soccer, football, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis and women’s bowling; having to vacate the 2011 SWAC championship because ineligible football players competed in regular season SWAC and/or non-conference football games during the fall 2011 season and ineligible football players competed in the 2011 SWAC championship game; permitting 24 athletes in six sports to practice, compete and receive expenses without meeting amateurism certification requirements; and having 21 athletes in eight sports improperly certified in meeting progress toward degree requirements. The school worked with the NCAA to come up with a reasonable set of actions and penalties which include: a two-year probation, from July 28, 2017 through July 27, 2019; a financial penalty of $5,000; a scholarship reduction in women’s track and field by one equivalency in 2017-18 and 2018-19; restrictions on our women’s track and field program, including reducing the number of recruiting days during the 2017-2018 academic year; public reprimand and censure by the NCAA; and vacating a number of events and games in which ineligible athletes participated, and those same events and games must be vacated for the individual ineligible student-athletes, though the individual eligible student-athlete finishes and awards will be retained.

The St. Petersburg, Florida native was a member of the inaugural South Florida football team where he hauled in the program’s first interception against Kentucky Wesleyan Sept. 6, 1997. After graduation, Davis signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets in 2001. He went on to play in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2002) and in the Arena Football League with the Orlando Predators (2003), Carolina Cobras (2004) and WikesBarre Pioneers (2005).

Albany State Reports Possible NCAA Violations

Albany State University has conducted concurrent internal and external reviews of the athletics program and has reported possible violations of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) legislation to the NCAA. ASU President Art Dunning tasked all new institutional leaders to formally assess all functions of their units. Sherie C. Gordon, director of athletics, conducted an NCAA review, which revealed possible violations. The university subsequently retained Buckner Sports Law Firm, a sports and education law firm, as outside legal counsel to assist with a comprehensive investigation into the possible violations. The NCAA enforcement staff has agreed to conduct a collaborative investigation with ASU’s outside counsel. Dunning and the athletics leadership team recognize the importance of ensuring a culture of compliance. In concert with the NCAA investigation, ASU is working diligently to implement recommendations from the NCAA review to ensure the university builds a model and compliant Division II program.

Celebration of Life When someone you love becomes a Memory

In Memory Of

Michael R. Crawford November 7, 1981 August 14, 2016

The Moment That You Died, My Heart Was Torn In Two. One Side Filled With Heartache, The Other Died With You. I Often Lie Awake At Night, When All The World’s Asleep. And Take A Walk Down Memory Lane With Memories That I Keep. Remembering You Is Easy, I Do It Every Day. But Missing You Is Heartache, That Never Goes Away. I Hold You Tightly In My Heart And There You Will Remain. Until My Life On Earth Does End When We Will Meet Again. Lovingly Remembered By Your Parents, Gerald And Bessie Crawford; Son-Brandon; SiblingsGary, Vincent, and Gerald Crawford; Michelle Gregory Capers and Tisha Gregory; A Host Of Family Members And Friends.

Ilugbo Memorial Scholarship in the Fall 2017 (Tatianna Anderson, Shyara Bush, C’Asia Griffin, Destiny Hayes, Aliyah McIntosh, Tiyana Roberts and Diamond Williams). They all will received $300 for books their Freshmen year. The president, Dr. Cheryl D. Dozier indicated that she will match the book scholarship of each student. This was unexpected and outstanding. Including these students there have been a total of 86 bridge students who have received this scholarship. Proceeds from this brunch made it possible for St. James A.M.E. Church to present checks to the Upward Bound Program totaling $2,900 for the Melissa I. F. Ilugbo Memorial Scholarship fund. Many thanks to all the participants and supporters of the Melissa I. F. Ilugbo Memorial Scholarship. St. James look forward to the support from the community, family and friends next year for this worthwhile educational endeavor.
