Coastal Georgia Council Honors Four Legendary Local Leaders On Monday, June 26, 2017, the Coastal Georgia Council Boy Scouts of America held its annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award Luncheon to benefit their Scoutreach and Exploring programs for local youth. The luncheon was held at Woodville Tompkins High School, and Luncheon Chair Person, Ms. Edna Jackson, former City of Savannah Mayor presented four individuals with the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award for their tireless dedication to youth leadership and character development, Reverend Matthew Southhall Brown, Sr., Dr. Lester B. Johnson, Jr., Ph.D., Dr. J. Alphonso Dandy, O.D., and Dr. Otis S. Johnson, Ph.D. One honoree, Dr. Lester B. Johnson, Jr. holds the distinction of being Savannah’s first African-American Eagle Scout. Reverend Matthew Southhall Brown, Sr. Pastor Emeritus Matthew Southhall Brown, Sr., was born in Savannah on July 16, 1926. As a youngster, he attended East Broad Street Elementary School, and Cuyler-Beach High School. Rev. Matthew S. Brown became the pastor of St. John Baptist Church, ‘The Mighty Fortress” in 1969, serving as the church’s leader from 1969-2005. Reverend Brown worked with Deacon John Delaware at First African Baptist Church to develop Cub and Boy Scout units at both First African Baptist Church and St. John the Baptist Church, which were among the first African American Scout troops in Savannah. Dr. J. Alphonso Dandy, O.D., was born May 6, 1941 in Lake City, Fl. He graduated from Bethune-Cookman College (now University) in 1962 with a BS degree in biology. Graduating from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1972 with a Doctor of Optometry degree, Dr. Dandy moved to Savannah where he practiced Optometry as the first African-American optometrist in Savannah. After 32 years of practice, he retired in 2004. He now holds the position of administrator at Antioch Medical Associates and President of Dandy Youth Development Corporation, a non-profit corporation that he founded to promote

Letter To The Editor

Report Card of the First District Representatives - Second Edition Has Alderman Van Johnson lost it? Has he forgotten that City Hall is the People’s Hall? He was elected by the people of the first district to represent the people of the first district and not himself. On June 28, 2017, Alderman Johnson had a meeting with the First District community presidents. The community presidents were asked by staff if they were bringing any guest. County Commissioner Chester Ellis requested that he be “plus two” and it was approved by the staff. Mrs. Rosabell P. Dixon, President of Cloverdale requested that I, Curtis Cooper, be her guest. Staff approved my attendance as well. Alderman Johnson was on the elevator with us as we rode up to the second floor of City Hall where the meeting was taking place and did not express any objections there. After we were seated in the meeting room, Alderman Johnson stated, “Mr. Cooper, you and Mrs. Lanier are not invited. This meeting is only for the community presidents.” I responded that the police needed to be called in order for me to be removed as this was a meeting that I was invited to and approved by staff to attend. There was a person from Hudson Hill

and a person from West Savannah who were not community presidents who were allowed to remain for the meeting. Mrs. Lanier and I are former community presidents as well as committee members of the Arena Project. As Mrs. Lanier and I exited City Hall, Commissioner Ellis told us that Alderman Johnson changed his mind and we could stay but “could not speak.” This was unacceptable. The only president with a wealth of knowledge regarding the Arena project present in this meeting was Commissioner Chester Ellis. Before leaving City Hall Mrs. Lanier and I made a Facebook live post informing the public of this gross miscarriage of good government. How can there be transparency when those, who are important resources for their communities, are denied access to public forums that they are invited to? This form of information control happens when deception is about to take place and the onset of backroom deal making. Where would we be if Alderman Van R. Johnson advocated for the first district like he did for the sixth district alderman? We would have shopping centers! Grocery stores! Pharmacies! Healthy food

choices! Movie theaters! Better recreation! They have all this and more in the sixth district thanks to Alderman Tony Thomas. The Cloverdale Civic Improvement Association sent a formal request to the 2012-2016 City Council regarding the completion of Bowles C. Ford Park. Our community never received a real response. We were told that the park is on a landfill and “it would cost too much money.” The Charlie C. Brooks Field on Wilmington Island was built and is still standing on a landfill. Alderman Johnson’s house is across the street from the home of the late Bowles C. Ford and this would have been a tremendous testament to our first African American Alderman for this project started in 1980 to be completed by our current African American Alderman. Today Sportsman Park and the Flamingo Park are gone and the completed Bowles C. Ford Park would have filled the void. This park would have been the “Lake Mayer” of the Westside of Savannah. Have any of the first district residents taken a look at the parks that our children play on? Have any first district residents taken a ride down Sallie Mood Drive to see soccer

fields, baseball diamonds, the Aquatic Center and Lake Mayer? This row of recreation resembles the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, Illinois. It has everything you want! What should we do? Hold our four councilman accountable. When you see them, ask them What are you doing for the first district? Where are the good paying jobs? Where is community investment in our community? Where is crime prevention? Where are the cameras in our neighborhoods? I hear shots fired in my community all of the time. Why aren’t the shots registering on the expensive shots fired equipment? Let us not wait until election season. Start looking at promises made and promises broken. Are you better off now than you were four years ago, eight years ago, and in some cases sixteen years ago? Examine these things once the election season comes. Let’s get ready in the first district by registering our kids on their eighteenth birthday, BEFORE THE PARTIES, and going to the mall. If adults in your family can get registered to vote, make sure every member of your family gets this done. If they refuse to get registered, don’t invite them to the family cookout. Each family should know how many voters are in their families. Strong voter registration and going to the polls will yield better results. Look at your chil-

dren and think of their future. Recall how many high school graduations you went to. Unfortunately, the best advice you could give them is to leave the city of Savannah due to the lack of opportunities. Savannah City Council has not started the arena project. The old city lot should have been relocated long ago. This is a stall tactic. Why have a first district community president meeting at City Hall to discuss a Canal Project that has not even been funded? This relocation project should have been the first project completed in SPLOST 5 as a city project. The jail was Chatham County’s’ primary project and it was done without delay. - 2012 - 2016 and the current city council responsible for these delays. Our representatives knew that the relocation of the city lot would have been the catalyst for the Arena Project. With this in mind we must ask our representatives the question . . . WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? In most elections crime is the major issue and it is still the unsolved cancer in our city. When will our representatives understand that it is poverty, lack of jobs, education, and the lack of opportunity which plagues this city? WATER BILL?????????? Submitted by Curtis V. Cooper, Jr.

The Simple Gospel with Rev. W. Anthony Jones, I Living A Life Of Forgiveness Psalm 103: 12

Thanks for Supporting Savannah Herald Newspaper

We are a funny group of people! We are “sue” happy! We sue for everything from hot coffee to hurt feelings. Everything is about revenge, getting even, or making someone pay. This is not only going on in our secular world, but also in the family of God. How easy is it to say I was wrong or forgive me, and mean it from your heart? There are many misconceptions about forgiveness such as, “I will forgive, but not forget”. This is the worst misconception that I hear people say more than any other. This is not what God had in mind for us. Many of us use the world’s view as a model of forgiveness instead of looking at forgiveness from a Biblical perspective. We are told to forgive, as we want to be forgiven; the scriptures tell us God will not only remove our sins, but He will forget them and

remember them no longer. How would we like it if God tells us that He will forgive us, but not forget? I understand that we are human and we cannot help but to remember certain things, but we must do our best to treat people, “we say we forgive”, as if the wrong never happened. This is what God does for us. Biblical forgiveness keeps no record of wrongs and does not hold a person’s sins over their head. Colossians 3:1214 from The Message Bible reminds us, “So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you”. I believe that part of the reason that many

people are not experiencing freedom in their lives, is because they have not dealt with unforgiveness. If you want to be free, have peace that passes all understanding, and experience real happiness, forgive the way that God requires. Dress in the wardrobe that God has picked out for you (compassion, kindness, and humility); quickly forgive those who have wronged you; cultivate a thicker lay of skin (stop being so sensitive); and let God deal with the offense (He does a way better job then you and I can). And that’s the simple gospel. Christ Church International “Changing Your Tomorrow Today”
