City Moves Forward With Arena Plans City Council is poised today to take another major step toward the development of a new arena and build-out of the surrounding Canal District as it considers awarding a design contract for the construction of a new public works facility on City-owned property on Savannah’s westside. The City Manager is recommending approval of a $1.7 million design services contract with engineering firm Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung International Inc. The existing City Lot is located at Gwinnett Street and Stiles Avenue, and houses various City functions, such as Water and Sewer headquarters, Traffic Engineering, Warehousing, Stormwater offices, a fuel-

ing facility, and various other offices and storage space. The mostly cement-block facilities are undersized and substandard, and in need of replacement. The City plans to demolish most of those buildings to make way for the arena, and restore the historic brick-and-terra-cotta Water Works building, which will be incorporated into the larger Canal District plan. The existing City Lot functions will be relocated to a new municipal facility proposed to be built on City-owned property at Interchange Court, located off West Gwinnett Street. The new facility will allow for the consolidation of See Arena-Page 4A

What started out as a family gathering turned tragic when former Savannah State women’s basketball player Courtney Long drowned over the weekend. According to reports, Long, who turned 28 on May 16, was with her family at Lake Wedowee’s Flat Rock Park in Alabama. Around 7 p.m. on June 9, her niece, Hanna Tucker, was walking on some rocks near one of the buoys and lost her balance which resulted in her falling into the water. Long jumped into the water to try to save her. Rescue crews scanned the area that night but suspended the search because of darkness. The bodies of Long and her niece, who was six, were founded the next morning and the Randolph County coroner pronounced them both deceased around 8:30 a.m. on June 10. A native of Bowden, Georgia, Long played basketball at SSU from 200811. In 112 career games she scored 485 points, 351 rebounds, 213 assists and 198 steals. A 5-foot9 guard, Long graduated from Savannah State with a sociology and according to her Facebook page was employed by Allstate.

SSU’s Kelly Transferring

Savannah State men’s basketball player Robert Kelly, Jr. has left the SSU program and will transfer to South Alabama. In his one season with the Tigers, the 6-foot-7 Powder Springs, Georgia resident started 15 of the 26 games he played in and had 252 points, 156 rebounds and 29 blocks while shooting 61 percent from the field. Kelly, who scored a career-high 26 points against Bethune-Cookman, had 11 rebounds and against Norfolk State, will have to sit out the 2017-18 season at South Alabama, who competes in the Sun Belt Conference.

FAMU Hires Basketball Coach

Florida A&M University (FAMU) has hired former University of Oregon men’s basketball assistant Robert McCullum as the school’s next head men’s basketball coach. A seasoned veteran

City has already awarded a contract for final design plans for a widened and rebuilt West Gwinnett Street, which will include new lighting and pedestrian facilities. Last month City Council received a master plan for the planned Canal District, which will improve drainage throughout the westside and connect the arena to surrounding neighborhoods and downtown via a 55-acre park with water features, walking and biking paths, and athletic fields. By Walter Moore

with an impressive résuméspanning more than 30 years, McCullum comes to FAMU after spending the last three seasons at Oregon, which made its first trip to the Final Four in 78 years this past April. McCullum’s career, which is highlighted by head coaching assignments at Western Michigan and the University of South Florida, has been defined by the successful total development of his student-athletes in the classroom and on the court. His résumé also includes a second Final Four appearance (1994), where he played a vital role in the recruitment and development of student-athletes at the University of Florida as an assistant on Lon Kruger’s staff. McCullum’s association with Kruger began when he joined the staff at Kansas State (1989-90), where the school made a NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990, continuing at Florida (1990-96), where the Gators made two NCAA appearances, including a run to the Final Four in 1994, and at Illinois (19962000), which won a Big Ten title and played in the NCAA Tournament three times. McCullum has had an international impact on the game, serving as the Nigerian National Team head coach in 2007, which posted a 5-1 record at the All-Africa Games. In addition to his time as Nigeria’s head coach, he was an assistant for the Forshan Long Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association (2011-12), directed the first professional player camp in Russia from 201213 (Revolution Basketball Camp in Kazan) and was the director of the NBA’s “Train the Trainer” program in Johannesburg, South Africa. His coaching history also includes stops at San Francisco (2007-08), Central Florida (2009-10) and Georgia Tech (2010-11). The new FAMU coach also served two stints as an assistant at South Alabama (1982-83 and 1984-87) and one year at Samford (1983-84). He moved on to Southern Illinois from 1987-89, where he helped the Salukis achieve a 20win season and the school’s first post-season bid in 11 years.

Proposed Property Tax Increase The Chatham County Board of Commissioners today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 2.74 percentage over the rollback millage rate for General Maintenance and Operations taxes, and increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 40.99 percentage over the rollback millage rate for Special Service District taxes, and 72.46 percentage over the rollback millage rate for Chatham Area Transit Authority. Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county. When the trend in prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicate that there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the board of tax assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and increase the assessment. This is called a reassessment. When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia Law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s new digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred. The Chatham County Board of Commissioners is considering adopting a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate for General Maintenance and Operations, and higher than the rollback millage rate for the Special Service District and Chatham Area Transit Authority. Therefore, before the Chatham County Board of Commissioners may finalize the budget and set a final millage rate,

Georgia Law requires that three public hearings be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions. All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings to be held at the following locations at the indicated times: June 15, 2017 at 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM and June 23, 2017 at 9:30 AM at the Chatham County Commissioner’s meeting room 124 Bull Street Savannah, Georgia

Want to make a big - a very big impression - on your July 4th barbecue guests this year? Serve them a genuine French dessert, suggests the Association of Mature American Citizens. All you’ll need is 720 eggs, 300 egg yolk, 59 pounds of sugar, 66 pounds of wheat flour and 440 pounds of strawberries to replicate the French version of the strawberry shortcake that recently broke the Guinness World Record. Five professional pastry chefs used those ingredients to bake the 105-foot long cake for the 25th French Strawberry Festival, which takes place, not in France, but in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.
