Sports Where Will SSU Call Home?

In mid-April, Savannah State administrative officials announced that the school was going to drop its athletics program from Division I to Division II. The announcement has drawn a variety of reactions from students, alumni and fans. Some applaud the decision while others were not pleased. SSU is no stranger to Division II, having been a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Conference, before joining the Division I ranks. Many wonder what conference will the Tigers join, once they return to Division II. Some say the logical choice would be to return to the SIAC. Other options could be the Peach Belt Conference and the Gulf South Conference. SSU joined the SIAC in 1969 and left for what some thought were greener pastures in 1998, however, the SIAC website states that SSU were members of the conference from 1968-2000. The SIAC has changed in many ways since SSU left. Albany State, Clark Atlanta, Kentucky State, Fort Valley State, Morehouse, Tuskegee, Lane, Paine, Miles and LeMoyne-Owen remain members while Benedict, Claflin, Central State (Ohio) and Spring Hill have since joined. None of the presidents that were in place in ‘98 are around and the same could be said for the athletic directors.

By Walter Moore

Calls to the SIAC office were not returned but the Council of Presidents is scheduled to meet on June 3. Should Savannah State re-join the SIAC, they will see some familiar faces. SSU alum and former women’s basketball coach Phil Wallace is the athletic director and women’s basketball coach at Miles. Former SSU tennis coach and football assistant Greg Green is also a football assistant at Miles. SSU grad and former sports information assistant Ruben Perez is the SID and compliance director at Paine, former Tiger running back Evan Brown is the equipment manager at Clark Atlanta, former SSU men’s basketball coach Sammy Jackson is the men’s basketball coach at Fort Valley State, former football assistant Gary Harper is on the football staff at Central State and former SSU AD’s Jerome Fitch (athletic director) and Marilynn Suggs (assistant athletic director) head up the athletic department at Claflin. Peach Belt commissioner David Brunk says that his conference will be down to 12 schools next year with the loss of Armstrong State. Brunk adds that the loss of ASU makes Savannah State very attractive to the PBC. “SSU is within our footprint. They will be a part of our discussions as well as a few NAIA schools, at our next meeting.” He adds that although no contact has been made, he looks forward to meeting with the SSU president and athletic director. The annual

Savannah Herald Newspaper Peach Belt meeting takes place May 31 and June 1 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Peach Belt does not offer football but that would allow Savannah State to be a member of the PBC in the other sports and operate its football program as a independent or join another conference as an associate member. Gulf South Conference commissioner Matt Wilson says that his conference and Savannah State has had some discussion through a third party. He also thinks that SSU may be a good fit for the GSC. “They are a lot like many of the GSC schools and clearly in our footprint. They will be an asset to Division II.” With money being a key factor in SSU’s decision to move down, Wilson thinks the administration made a smart choice. “Savannah State is making a wise decision, given today’s climate.” The GSC already has a footprint in the state with Valdosta State, Shorter and West Georgia already being members. Travel would be financially beneficial in the Peach Belt and the SIAC, but may pose challenges in the Gulf South. The SIAC would also help with instate recruiting, especially with the cites that have conference schools such as Augusta, Albany and Atlanta as well as the middle Georgia area. In the African American arena, many SSU alumni know people in their neighborhood, churches, jobs or social organizations that attended SIAC schools.

The improvements cost approximately $3 million and renovations began in March 2016. It was funded by the City’s SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) and was championed by the Cuyler-Brownville Neighborhood Association and District 1 Alderman Van Johnson. “You deserve this,” Johnson said to the crowd gathered for the ribbon cutting. “This is an example that partnerships work and that SPLOST works.” Hundreds of children from the neighborhood will be able to use the facility for afterschool activities, summer camps and weekend activities. With Pastor W. Anthony Jones, I How To Handle Devastating News

Why is the most asked question in the world. Why is there so much evil? Why so many innocent children die? Why do good people suffer? If God is so loving and kind, why doesn’t He do something? Evil and suffering are real, and none of us are immune from their grip. Tragedy touch all of us, no matter who we are. Travel back with me to a man who was a good and devoted husband, faithful father, and great business man with great integrity. This man would live to see all that changed in a back to back sweep of devastating events. This man’s name is Job. Job realized that everything that God had given to him was on loan. He did not know that God and Satan had a dialogue about him. Satan told God that he would get Job to curse Him to his face (Job 1:11). The only one who was cursing was Satan. Satan hated the fact that instead of Job cursing God, he worshipped Him. No blaming, bitterness, or clinching his fist. Instead, Job worshipped His God! When disappointment or tragedy strikes, we have to make a decision. Let me suggest several things that has helped me when I had to deal with devastating news. First, I turned to God and not away from him. Facing tragedy or life storms of any kind can be extremely difficult. But in the midst of heartache and pain, you can find the hope and courage to go on. With God’s help, the help of caring family members and friends, and the encouragement found in the Word of God, you will receive the necessary strength to overcome. As difficult as life storms may be, you are not alone. God is with you always. He loves you, and cares about what is going on in your life. He hears your

On Sunday, June 4, 2017, beginning at 10:30 a.m, the second Holy Communion Worship Service will be observed at Second Arnold. back home. In that body, He made atonement for sin. His resurrected body brought life and immortality to light (2 Timothy 1:10). We have much for which to give thanks as we break bread at His table. We are guests of heaven’s Host, who holds everything in His hand and who rejoices when guests surround His table. More Than Conquerors

conquers and controls our appetites for food and sex and conquers that spirit of lust and covetousness; and he diminishes pride into humility. Yes, Jesus in us, reforms and transforms us into his image; then the character and passion of Christ shine through us in this dark world that others see our good works and they too become more than conquerors. Jesus considers us more than conquers today, and declared that we would do greater works, because he has increased our knowledge of technology and we can deliver his word, which brings healing, around the world in seconds over the air waves. However, when he was in a body on earth, even transportation was primitive; therefore, he worked in a limited territory. [Daniel 12: 4, Acts 1:8, Rom. 12:2, I John 2: 15-17, Matt.13: 43] Because Jesus in us is worthy to receive glory and honor and power, then that makes us joint heirs with Jesus. We too are Sons of God and we also become worthy to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessings as priests, kings as we reign with him; while he is the true conqueror who has made us more than conquerors. [Luke 18:28-30, St. John 1: 12, Romans 8:16-17 & 37, Rev. 5:10 &12]

The Simple Gospel with Rev. W. Anthony Jones, I

Reaping The Harvest

What seeds have you sown

in life that you don’t want to harvest later? Just like the wheels of justice turn slowly in our society, God’s harvesting time is slow but coming. One man’s willful disobedience caused generations and unborn generations to become the recipient of the seed that he had sown. The seeds that you and I sow will not only cause the generation that’s connected to us to become the recipient of our seeds, but the unborn generation as well. 1 Timothy 2:14 says, “Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor”. Both, Adam and Eve, caused sin; however, Adam willfully sinned. Adam was the one who was held accountable because he was commanded by God to not eat from the tree. He was responsible for protecting his wife, and he failed. In Genesis 2:16-17 before God created Eve, God says to Adam: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” The question was asked, where was Adam when Eve was begin beguiled by Satan? Sad to say, he was standing right there doing nothing. Many of our men today are doing the same thing, “nothing”. Adam should have said to Satan, don’t you talk to my wife! He should have stood up for her, honored God by leading his wife, and told

Satan to shut his mouth, but he did not say a word. We, as men, need to apologize to our wives for not standing up for them; for not fighting on their behalf; and for not honoring God in leading them better than we are. We can’t change our past, but we can move forward. I want to suggest the following: first, we must ask God to forgive us of our willful disobedience. I John says, “if we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleans us from all unrighteousness.” When we repent, God promise us reconciliation and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. He does not promise relief from any and all consequences. Secondly, we must start sowing good seeds. Galatians 6:7-8 declares, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting”. And fInally, we must lead by example and help this generation to not make the same mistakes that we have made. Titus 2:7 says, “In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, and incorruptibility”. None of us will get immunity from the seeds that we have sown. Remember, seeds do come up! And that’s the simple gospel.

Heaven’s Tears

Evangelist Rachel Thomas – N- God

On the day of Jesus ‘crucifixion, the heavens opened up and tears of sorrow poured out. The tears were not so much as to His dying on the cross because they know that He would live again in Heaven; But because His people did not believe on Him, The Son of God, who was sent to redeem the world from their Sin. Those who did not believe threw away their opportunity to be saved. How many today are still in the state of rebellion and does not believe on the Son of man? When one turns away from our Loving, Kind and merciful God, Heaven cries. The Bible states that when one sinner repents and comes to Christ, the Angels in heaven rejoices; so doesn’t it make sense that when one denies Christ or rebels, the Angels shed tears over that soul? ( Matt 27; Mark 15, and Luke 23). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) Let me tell you this little story. One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden and he was gloating and boasting. Yes sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. See me trap, use bait I knew they couldn’t resist. Got’em all! What are you going to do with them? Jesus asked. Satan answered, “Oh, I’m gonna have fun! I’m gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I’m gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I’m really gonna have fun!” And what will you do when you get done with them? Jesus asked. Satan said, Oh, I’ll kill ‘em. Satan glared proudly. How much do you want for them? Jesus asked. Oh, you don’t want those people. They ain’t no good. Why, you’ll take them and they’ll just hate you. They’ll spit on you, curse you and kill you!! You don’t want those people! How much? He asked again. Satan looked at Jesus and sneered. “All your tears and All your blood.” Jesus said, “Done!” Then He paid the price. Isn’t it funny how we believe what the newspaper say, but questions what the Bible says? Isn’t it funny how everyone wants to go to heaven provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do anything the Bible says? Or is it scary?” Isn’t it funny how someone can say, “I believe in God” but still follow Satan (who by the way also believes in God)? When Jesus forgave sinners, He always admonished them by saying, “go and sin no more.” What He meant was, forgiveness was theirs, but they had to make the effort to not

commit the same transgressions over and over again. When you consider your actions; what are the sins you tend to commit over and over? If you can recognize this weakness, you can offer it to God and set forth to conquer it. Are you a liar? Do you steal? Do you bend the rules for your own advantage? Look into your heart and be honest. Don’t indulge in the all too human frailty of rationalizing your actions. Go and sin no more is a powerful command. However; to truly be forgiven you must not only ask for forgiveness. But you must be sincere in your heart and want to change. Only then can you receive mercy. Only then will the Holy Spirit help you to sin no more and to live a better life. All by being transformed in the renewing of your mind in Christ Jesus – where old things pass away and Behold (look) All things have become New!!! If an unsaved man could see how good the Lord is to his people. If they could see the way He loves, and cares for us. He helps us every day in so many ways; encourages, strengthens, protects, guides, satisfies every longing of our hearts, keeps in peace amid the troubles about us, delivering us from worry, fear and evil habits to keep us filled with His Spirit until we enter into that external life in Heaven. If an unsaved person could see into the “kingdom of God,” he would see that there is real happiness in our Savior, Jesus Christ, and in Him only. To all unbelievers,, to all who are unsaved – STOP” making Heaven’s Tears flow, by obeying the desires of the flesh in your hearts like: going to theaters to see evil, wicked movies, even on television which influences your thinking (“as a man thinketh, so is he”, Proverbs. 23:7); dances, playing cards, drinking, smoking, loving money . These are a few desires of a natural worldly man. (Isaiah 64:6). Stop Heaven’s Tears by being born of the Spirit of God and become a citizen of Heaven (John 3:6). Romans 10:9-10 says humble yourselves before our Mighty God and He will forgive you and accept you into His kingdom. Let Heaven Rejoice!!! Pray this prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and come short of your kingdom in heaven. I am sincerely making a decision in my heart to turn away from sin by asking you to forgive me. I accept your Son Jesus as the personal Savior of my soul and His transformation by the renewing of my mind in Him.. I believe Jesus died for me, so that I MAY LIVE FOR Him in truth and in Spirit. So I thank you now for my soul’s salvation in Jesus’ name. Amen. God Bless you and keep you is my prayer for you. Rachel Thomas AKA Mama Rachel AKA Jesus Lady 912-234-3107

6 Ways To Reduce Stress And Anxiety
In Your Financial Life

Trading in your morning coffee run to Starbucks for the pot of coffee in the office is never fun, but when finances get tight that drive-thru stop might be one of the first things to go. But do you really need to give up the little things in life that make you happy? Al Zdenek (www. AlZdenek.com), the author of the book Master Your Cash Flow: The Key To Grow And Retain Wealth, doesn’t think so. “It’s important to be able to hang onto those things you enjoy,” says Zdenek, the president, CEO and founder of Traust Sollus Wealth Management. “You should be able to, just as long as you continue to make smart decisions on bigger issues that affect your future wealth.” There is a lot of financial stress and anxiety in the country. Zdenek says if you can eliminate financial stress from your life, your anxiety levels will go down. Here are some of the things he recommends to accomplish that: Know what you need. The unknown is the biggest stress driver. There is a cash flow per month that would allow you to live the way you want now and in the future. This is something you should know.

Fix broken cash flow. Unfortunately, we have all made poor financial choices, some of which have been more costly than others. There is no need to continue this. There are ways to find solutions in everyday decisions that will allow you to start your cash flow going in the right direction.

Use debt smarter. Many types of debt can be good; such as real estate, investments and investing in your business. Make your debt decisions like a well-run company and create wealth.

Make sure you have a road map. Having a good financial plan is like having a good map and researching your trip ahead of time. You can wing your financial plan, but if you work less in life and get to your destination sooner, your life will be less stressful if you have a plan.

Don’t let your decisions come back to haunt you. The bad decisions you make could come back to haunt you decades down the road. Learn how to avoid costly decisions and always make the correct financial choices, 100 percent of the time.

Work when you want. People like to know when they don’t have to work anymore. A good advisor can set you up with a plan that will give you this option well before you reach retirement age.
“By consistently making the best financial decisions, people can find more cash flow to spend or save,”

About eighteen years ago, I lost my eleven year old son, and that taught me how to prepare for life changing situations. When we understand that everything we have is on loan, we are better prepared to release it when the owner wants it back. “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). 1 Timothy 6:7 tells us that “we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we will take nothing out”.
