Carnegie Library Recognized Coach Marion Dingle Honored Among Top Ten in State in Effingham County

While recognizing Carnegie Library as one of the Ten Most Beautiful Libraries in Georgia, Julie Walker, State Librarian for the Georgia Public Library Service, noted that it was chosen from among 409 public libraries throughout the State. Georgia built 30 libraries through Carnegie

grants, 25 of which remain operating and two of which serve the Savannah area. "Andrew Carnegie believed that libraries are democratic in nature and serve to lift people up," said Walker. She also mentioned that libraries are much more than buildings. Libraries are a community of people

from the staff that work in them, the public who use them, and the Library Trustees who govern them, to the funding agencies that support them such as the County Commissioners, City Officials, and Library Foundation Board members. See Carnegie-Page 3A

Services Held For Bobby Adams

Family and friends made their way to Second Arnold Missionary Baptist Church on April 24 to say their final farewell to Robert Lee Adams. Known as "Bobby" to most, Adams died on April 17 at St. Joseph’s hospital surrounded by his devoted family. A 1965 graduate of Beach High School, Adams grew up on Savannah’s eastside and was the youngest son of Alonzo and Matilda Adams. Like most young men his age, Adams liked sports. He wasn’t an athlete but found his calling in writing. From 1965-69, Adams was a sports correspondent for the Savannah Morning News, covering the games for the local African American high schools. Often times, he was referred to as the authority on sports statistics. Adams was a military veteran, serving in the United States Army and afterwards returned to Savannah and completed a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Savannah State College (now University).

The 1974 SSU alumnus was also coordinator of the EOA’s Veteran’s Services program and he spent 39 years with CSX Railroad Transportation. Adams was affiliated with several local organizations such as the Savannah Gents, Inc., Thursday Morning Breakfast Club, Railroad Retirees Breakfast Club, the Sol C. Johnson Athletic Honors Court, the Alfred E. Beach National Alumni Association, Alfred E. Beach High Athletic Hall of Fame and the Sol C. Johnson High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted in the latter two organizations in April and October 2013 respectively. As the family entered the sanctuary, they could hear Spencer White III leading the choir singing 'God Is My Everything.' Rev. Richard Hall, the pastor of Second Arnold, officiated the celebration service. "We have suffered a great loss of a great man," said Hall. Following the choir's rendition of 'Lift Him Up,' Rev. Frank Ellis read from the Old Testament, Rev. Ronald Gregory read from the New Testament and Rev. Teddy Williams prayed. Reflections came from Deacon Chris Floyd, Henry Jones and Deacon Frank Pinckney. Floyd, who was a classmate, told the audience they need to get right with God. "We need to be ready when Jesus comes. This is not our earthly home. We are

Savannah Herald Newspaper just pilgrims just passing through," "Bobby is gone physically but he will always be my friend," said Jones, who was a friend of Adams. He added that Adams was the best man at his wedding and he will miss him dearly. Pinckney and Adams were church members at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. "He was a good man and continued to support his church and never complained," stated Pinckney. "Life is a journey with a lot of bumps in the road but you never heard him complain." Resolutions were read from First Evergreen Baptist, Macedonia and Central Baptist Churches by longtime family friend Shirley James while Alderman Van Johnson read a resolution from the City of Savannah. Lawrence Hutchins gave a tribute to Adams on behalf of the Beach Athletic Hall of Fame. "At the time of his death, he was vice president of the group. Before that, he was president.” Hutchins added that Adams was faithful to the Hall of Fame until he took his last breath. "A few days before his demise, he met with others at the Savannah Herald to put the finishing touches on the souvenir book for the induction. He will also be missed for his Homecoming tent at the Savannah State homecoming tailgate." During the eulogy, Rev. Willie Rice, the pastor at Macedonia, used the term 'After Death' as his subject. "Death should not be our center of attention," he

said. Rice shared the story of a little boy who was stung by a bee. The boy as well as his young sister was crying, because of the sting. The mother took the stinger out of the lad's arm and told his sister to stop crying because the bee only had one stinger. The pastor added that "a few weeks ago we celebrated Easter and said that Jesus Christ took out the stinger for us." Rice reminded those in the pews that death is the beginning of a new life but also warned that time is running out to get your house in order. "Death is appointed and none of us have the liberty to change the appointment time." As he began to close, the eulogist asked those gathered "Are you prepared or preparing for what will transpire after death?"

Broadnax Applies For FAMU Job

According to a report in the Tallahassee Democrat, Savannah State head men’s basketball coach Horace Broadnax has applied for the head men’s basketball coach opening at Florida A&M. Broadnax has spent the past 12 years as head coach at SSU and has compiled a record of 156-211. The 53-year old Florida native has some ties to FAMU, having spent the 1992 season as an assistant coach on the Rattlers staff while Willie Booker was the head coach. During his time with Savannah State, Broadnax has had three winning seasons (2009, 2012 and 2013) with teams advancing to post-season tournaments on three occasions (2012, 2013 and 2016). The Tigers went 13-16 in 2017 with one of their wins coming against Oregon State.

supported his teams during the challenging times of the civil rights movement. He also recognized the late Coach Georgia Bartley, giving her credit for laying a strong and solid foundation for the women’s teams which also won two state championships in 1963 and 1964. The Effingham County business community, elected officials and various volunteers were responsible for the planning and preparation of the Celebration of Champions. The tribute included speaker, Larry “Gator” Rivers, legendary Harlem Globetrotter from Savannah and a variety of tributes from the planners and presenters. SCHS Association Vice President, Dr. Franklin Goldwire thanked everyone involved and recognized Mr. Clar-

ence Morgan, Effingham County Athletic Director for his relentless pursuit of information, articles, photos and other memorabilia in support of the recognition. Morgan noted that he was saddened to find that not many records had been kept or news articles written in support of these achievements. He truly delighted in given the more than 400 people in attendance a book he had assembled after months of research and design. Since there was no fanfare, t-shirts or confetti when the championships were won, SCHS Association President, Willie Wright led the unveiling of championship banners, designed and hung in the old gymnasium that is still standing and used for community events. Each play-

er also received a framed replica of the banners as well as a copy of resolutions from the Georgia House and Senate. Coach Dingle said it was the culmination of a wonderful career and a testament to the notion that if you do a job you love, you will never work a day in your life. Members of the planning committee also included Dr. Cheryl Goldwire, Polly Tate, James Taylor, Lucille Tate, Levan Scott, Dr. Norma Wallace, Roosevelt Smalls, Ruth Griffin, Lula Seabrooks, Jesse Simmons, Beverly Scott, Dorothy Davis, Dorothy Griffin, Roy Griffin, Clarence Morgan, Dionne Harden, Elnora Bacon, Brenda Bruner, Ruth Goldwire, Robert Hunter, and others. Café on 17 donated the refreshments.

Carnegie Library opened its doors to the African American community in August of 1914 and was a cornerstone of African American accomplishment and education. It was a vibrant center of life then and continues to be so today. Through the hard work and vision of the founders, a legacy was created which continues to play a pivotal role within the community. For more than 100 years, Carnegie Library has hosted hundreds of thousands of children, families and adult readers. Two famous child patrons who grew up to hold nationally recognized roles, crediting their love of books and learning to their time in the stacks at Carnegie Library, are U. S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas and Pulitzer Prize winning author James Alan McPherson. The Bull Street Library, Savannah's second Carnegie grant-funded library, has been recognized as one of seven additional public libraries that "did not make the final 10 but whose architectural significance or spectacular settings make them equally worthy destinations for travelers."

The Gospel Truth Holy Communion Observed with Pastor Gwendolyn Greene at Second Arnold The Fourth On Sunday, May 7, The communion service 2017, beginning at 10:30 should be an edifying and Commandment a.m., the Second Arnold strengthening experience,

The Apostles’ doctrine is built upon keeping God’s commandments. Apostle Peter and all of the apostles said, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Apostle Paul said, “Touch not, taste not, handle not, which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men, but rather to keep the commandments of God which are holy.”Jesus says, “People reject the commandments of God that they may keep their own traditions.” For the love of money and for their own pleasure, people do not keep the Sabbath Day which is the fourth commandment. As an example for us, Jesus kept the Sabbath even though he is Lord of all things, and the apostles continued to keep the Sabbath after Jesus’ ascension back into heaven. [Is. 58: 1314, Mark 7: 9, Acts 5:29, 13: 14,42, 16:13, Col. 2: 21-22, Rom. 3:31, 7:12] In Revelation the twelfth chapter, we see a woman with a crown of twelve stars on her head. She is clothed in the sun and the moon is under her feet. She brought forth a man child to rule the world. The woman represents Mary the mother of Jesus and the woman also represents the church. The 12 stars in her crown represent the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The sun represents the day, light and righteousness; the moon represents night, darkness and evil. The dragon, the serpent and the devil represents Satan who has deceived the whole world; and is angry with the woman and makes war with her and her children because they keep the commandments of God. [Gen. 1:16, Matt. 19: 28, Rev. 4: 4, 12: 1-2, 5, 9, 17] God says, “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy and after such a long time, today, if you hear my voice, harden not your heart. Satan

has deceived the whole world that the first day of the week is the Sabbath, but the very elect will not be deceived. The Roman Catholic Church and the false prophets conspired and voted to change the Sabbath Day from the seventh day of the week, Saturday, to the first day of the week, Sunday. Even as a person’s birth date is the day he was born, likewise, the seventh day is the day that God established to be the Sabbath day. God says, “The Sabbath is a sign between me and my people.”[Gen. 2: 2-3, Exodus 20:8-11, 31:13-18, Ezek. 20: 12 20, 22: 25-26, Matt.24: 20, 24, 30, Rev. 12:9]

Baptist Church family will observe their 5th Holy Communion Worship Service this year. The service will begin with the worship and praise conducted by the Deacons and Praise Ministry. The Second Arnold Resurrection Choir will render the song service. Pastor Richard L. Hall, Sr. will deliver the Communion message. Remembering our Lord as we gather for communion, we should be very conscious of our oneness in the Lord with our fellow believers. We should see them as our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we do, there is a brotherly consideration, another characteristic of a proper observance of the Lord’s Supper.

but this can only happen when we are completely sincere in our observance of it. We must enter into it with sincere appreciation, self-examination, and brotherly consideration. If these elements are present when we assemble with fellow believers to remember the Lord’s death, it truly becomes a life-transforming commemoration of our Savior’s love and sacrifices for us. Please join us as we observe this Holy Communion service at Second Arnold. We look forward to the fellowship.

One year has passed dear Mother, Since God called you home To be with Him in heaven, Around the snow white throne We often sit and think of you, When we are all alone For memory is the only thing, That grief can tell its own We miss you, Oh, we miss you, How could we help but cry? But if we live as you lived, We’ll meet you again by and by Alvernia (Roy) and Tyrone (Angela); Grands, Great Grands, other Family and Friends

He Only Takes the Best

A heart of gold stopped beating, two shining eyes at rest, God broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best. Little did we know that morning, The sorrow the day would bring. The end was sudden, the shock severe. We never knew that death was so near. When days are sad and lonely, And evening shadows fall, We hear your voice and see your face. Your sweet memory lingers on. God knew you had to leave us, but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. Lovingly remembered by: mother, Mrs. Helen Floyd; husband, Ron Johnson; children, Korey & Ashley Johnson; grand-daughter, Alaia T.T. DuPont and family.

Gospel Truth from Page 1B

with them, after those days says the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts and into their minds will I write them.” [Mal. 3:6, Matt. 5: 17, Heb. 4: 1-8, 8:10, 13:8, Rev. 15: 3]. The scriptures prove that Jesus arose from the grave on the Sabbath Day not on Sunday morning. Daniel said that Jesus would be crucified in the middle of the week, which would be on a Wednesday and Jesus was on the cross from 12 o’clock noon until three o’clock that same day. Jesus said that he would be in the grave three days and three nights as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights. Therefore Jesus was in the grave after three o’clock on Wednesday, and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, and the days of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. After three o’clock on Saturday, he arose! Jesus was risen when Mary Magdalene came to the grave looking to see Jesus Saturday evening which really begins the first day of the week according to God’s Word. (Each new day begins in the evening) When Jesus returns and the resurrection occurs, The saints will celebrate the great Sabbath Day on earth before the wicked arise from the grave to be judged and casted into the lake of fire to be tormented forever. It pays to keep all of God’s commandments including, “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy!” [Gen. 1: 5, Lev. 23: 32, Dan. 9:27, Matt. 12: 40, 19: 28, 27: 4546, 28:1-6, Rev. 20: 1-15] We keep God’s commandments because we love him and his commandments are not grievous to us. Jesus says, “Blessed are they that do and teach my commandment that they may have right to the tree of life and enter in through the gates into the city, New Jerusalem.” [Ezek. 20:12, 22: 26, Matt. 5:19, St. John 14: 21, I John 5:3, Rev.21: 2, 22:14]

Let me suggest several things to you when you feel that God’s protection is being removed from your life. First, keep a positive attitude. Always keep looking to God for help. Second, keep a spirit of worship. Always keep a praise in your mouth. Lastly, know that you can go through your trails. Remember, nothing touches your life that has not first passed through the hands of God. He is in full control, and because He is, He has the sovereign right to permit trials that we do not deserve. And that’s the simple gospel. Christ Church International “Changing Your Tomorrow Today”

from Page 1B that no parent wants to hear. All ten of your children are dead. Can you imagine how Job felt? It’s one thing to lose your animals; animals can be replaced. It’s one thing to lose your livelihood; jobs can be replaced. But what does one do when he loses his children. Notice what Job did. He fell to the ground and worshipped God. Satan hated the fact that instead of Job cursing God, he worshipped Him. No blaming, bitterness, or clinching his fist. Instead, Job worshipped His God.
