Kwame Alexander’s National Tour Coming to Savannah

Members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority held its annual Finer Womanhood celebration during the month of March. The month began with worshipping together on March 4th at Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Immediately after church service, the members, Amicae and family members attended a luncheon at the Pirates’ House Restaurant. During the luncheon, gifts were presented to Clyde Faison, Rosa Jackson, and Thomasina Thompson, the Zeta Doves, all of whom are members with fifty years or more in the organization. Also receiving a recognition plaque was Vera Trappio who recently retired from the Savannah Chatham

County School System. The members of the committee selected Gadsden Elementary School to partner with a group of young ladies to teach them proper etiquette. The young ladies selected were members of an all-girls class at the school. On March 7th and 8th , the Zetas taught the girls the proper way to sit, talk and eat while having a meal, how to set a table, where to place their napkins and other things that are considered proper etiquette. On Friday, March 9th, the girls attended the Pretty Little Ladies Tea Party where they put everything they had been taught in action. Gadsden’s media center was beautifully decorated, and the Zetas set the

tables with their own china, crystal, and silverware. The Little Ladies were dressed in beautiful dresses, hats and gloves. At the conclusion of the luncheon, each Little Lady was presented with a gift from the sorority and a colorful souvenir hat. The principal of Gadsden, Dr. Renee Bryant-Evans, presented a gift to all the Zetas who had assisted with the program. Besides Zetas, School Board members Irene Hines and Ruby Jones attended the tea and expressed their pleasure of the event. Also in attendance were Academic Coach Samantha Williams, Director of School Improvement Kyrstal Bell and a representative from the Board of Education. Special thanks to Inez Eady,

Kwame Alexander took the literary world by surprise with his Newbery award-winning, The Crossover; a sports novel written in verse. Seeing this unlikely blend of sports and poetry turning scores of readers into poetry lovers, he prevailed through over 20 rejections by top publishers before scoring his New York Times bestselling middle-grade debut. The Washington Post says, “right from the start... The Crossover looks, sounds, and even feels different.” The New York Times calls Alexander’s work irresistible and says he “...takes great delight in borrowing the energy of rap and hip-hop to translate the game’s heat, speed and joy of motion to the page.” In Rebound, before he is Chuck “Da Man” Bell, Charlie is a kid who dreams of basketball glory. In his mind he can steal, jump, dunk, and make the crowd go wild just like a pro-baller. But when tragedy strikes, Charlie can’t help but make all the wrong moves. Will a series of missteps keep him

benched, or can he learn how to rebound in the follow-up to Alexander’s slam dunk novel, The Crossover? Seven poems are illustrated by Emmy-winning artist and co-creator of the groundbreaking comic series, Brotherman, Dawud Anyabwile. Alexander ’s unique style is kinetic and vibrant. In his novels he deploys his evocative vocabulary, and mastery of haiku, rhythm, rhyme, acrostics, malapropism, and blackout poems to channel anger, confusion, and humor of a boy trying to understand his changing world. Kwame is doing a presentation and signing of his new book, REBOUND the follow-up to The Crossover. The Rebound “rock-star” tour bus will stop in Savannah at the SOUTHWEST CHATHAM LIBRARY, 14097 Abercorn St., Savannah, GA 31419. About Kwame Alexander: Kwame Alexander is a poet, educator, and the New York Times Best-selling author of 25 books, including REBOUND,

the follow-up to his Newbery-medal winning middle grade novel THE CROSSOVER. Kwame writes for children of all ages. Some of his other works include The Playbook: 52 Rules to Help You Aim, Shoot, and Score in this Game of Life, and the novels Solo and Booked. A regular contributor of NPR’s Morning Edition, Kwame is the recipient of several awards, including: The Coretta Scott King Author Honor, The Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Prize, and the 2017 Inaugural Pat Conroy Legacy Award. He believes that poetry can change the world, and he uses it to inspire and empower young people around the world through his Writing Workshop. He’s led cultural exchange delegations to Brazil, Italy, Singapore, and to Ghana, where he is training teachers and building a library and health clinic as a part of LEAP for Ghana, an International literacy program he co-founded. The 2018 NEA Read Across America Ambassador, Kwame is also the host/producer of “Bookish” a literary talk show.

Letter To The Editor A “Lie” can Travel all over the world and back while the truth is putting on its shoes! (Leisure and Recreation Services)

As I write this article I want you as a community to remember these words coming from the department. And you can find this on the Internet, Leisure Services provides opportunities for all, or “service programs and budget which presents our plan for providing services to the community, businesses and visitors, this budget continues our pro-active agenda to improve the quality of life throughout our community”. Which community are they talking about? Surely not West Savannah, Frazier Homes or East Savannah or any other community in Savannah. Let’s be clear every independent program like the Stallions, PALS, Boys Club, Whippers, Savannah Stars, Bears, Gators, Falcons, etc., make up our youth teams with a host of volunteers who never get the well deserved credit for their valuable time to mentor our young people. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Psalms 5: 11-12. Because man will disappoint you every time with the case of what you so call your leaders in this Department “Leisure Services” (Barry Baker). Let me express the definition of leadership, socialization and interaction. Leadership is the planning of activities and managing the duties of

others while socialization deals with helping others and being concerned about their needs. Last, but not least, interaction means being involved with people and sharing ideas, and developing plans and also being part of a group with the intentions of improving the quality of life especially in our communities and with our youth. A prime example of his non-leadership abilities (Barry Baker) was a phone call I made to him to use some tables and chairs for a youth banquet which I also expressed to him that I had a celebrity and former NBA basketball player as our guest speaker, and he said “No” which to me could have been a joint venture to enhance our young people’s awareness and motivate them to continue towards a positive future and be productive citizen as they continue to grow up. All kids are not bad by nature but this city along with the media always seems to highlight the negative over the positive. Is a dead kid more important than a live one? When we have opportunities to honor and uplift our young why do we wait on the news and Savannah Morning Newspaper, who in my opinion are bias and if you don’t believe me look sometimes in the sports section at the pictures and teams and tell me what

color you see all the time or let someone get shot and watch the news coverage especially black youth. We notified every news outlet about our guest speaker being in town, not one showed up but Mr. Adams from the Savannah Herald, our voice in the community. So I ask again, “Is a dead kid more relevant then one that’s alive?” What make a collection of people a society of people is the cohesiveness that stems out shared values, purpose, and belief systems? As for as the system is concerned we need new leadership that truly believes in our community and is willing to invest its time, resources and spirit in the re-building. Why can’t we be motivated activists? We exist in a world that does not respect people who do not speak up and fight for what is rightfully theirs. The loss of black men between that ages of 13-29, which is the warrior class, represents a danger of genocidal proportions. To destroy or neutralize black men creates a critical void in the black family structure and forces black women (without men) to assume the roles of women (mothers) as well as men (fathers) which makes up about 70% of current “head of households” in the black community trying to instill pride, dignity, and most

importantly, self-worth. In conclusion: There’s enough money in this city to build one or more modern day facilities (gym) and not 15-20 Golden Age Centers to camouflage everyone into believing they are building centers (gyms). There’s not enough attention, concern and more importantly money being spent in recreation involving our children (African American boys and girls). As concerned citizens we need to stay on top of their budget report every year and establish audits and stay focused on the direction the money is being altered off to, instead of recreation. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22: 6 A lost of the violence in our city is occurring because this particular system has broken down and definitely needs fixing. “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6: 7 Cyrus Hunter (God Bless Everyone) P.S. In my opinion Barry Baker’s time is up along with anybody else in government that don’t have our youth and communities in its best interest. Question what will be Barry Baker’s legacy. While you ponder that question let me make it easy for you “Nothing,” “NA,” “Nada,” the man has not done a thing for our youth in his position to be remembered by.

In Memory Of Our Dear Friend

Hezekiah Hudson, Sr. April 13, 2001

It’s been seventeen years since you went away but the memory of you is here to stay. The memory we have shall forever be kept within our hearts throughout eternity. You will be remembered with a loving grace and thought of everyday with a smiling face. No matter what journey life takes us through we will always take the time to remember you.

Joe Murray Rivers, Jr. In Loving Memory The angels looked down from heaven one night They searched for miles afar, And deep within the distance They could see a shining star. They knew that very instant That the star was theirs to gain, So they took you up to heaven Forever to remain. Look down on us from heaven Keep us fre from hurt and pain, You’ll always be within our hearts Until we meet again. Missed by Commissioner James Holmes and Mrs. Yvonne Holmes and family

Submerged in the problems of the world Determined not to be thrown off track Not even by my love for a girl I can not look back. Mistakes are made By those who know not the facts All of the options must be weighed To all bad decisions I will not react! Jumping in the ocean behind a diamond Will never allow you to see it’s true color The salt in the water shows you as it falls What you actually had in your hand. Time has made me much stronger As I reflect over these many years I am burdened no longer With those crocodile tears. The greatest lesson I have learned from this loss Is that one should not concern themselves with the amount of time Not even with the actual cost But the quality of the memories I know to be mine. Visions of you stay in my face As I even over the years have been able to see you smile Thank God for his mercy and grace I am so proud to be your child.

Elizabeth Betty Williams Savage April 6th

Our beautiful angel we wishing you today a Happy Birthday, We thank God for allowing you to come our way. We love you, we honor you and we cherish you. Happy Heavenly Birthday Love always your 8 children; your brother, your two sisters-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 17 great grands, a host of family and friends.

As I look around and see how you have protected me Through times like one would never believe I see so many others who are not free My freedom because of you is to much to conceive. Never again shall I not believe Despite my setbacks in life That with you as my protector, no one can deceive Your protection is stronger than a knife. I look up to thee with pride and a smile With my glow still in place Can others be such a proud child I can only plead my case. By Son, C. Leon Lee, II
