General Education curriculum instructing students in Afro-American Music and Liberal Learning seminars. Dr. Wiggins believes that music is an experiential art that appeals to both the cognitive and affective domains; thus, it is essential that learner-centered theories permeate instructional design. Students praise her ability to infuse high impact practices into her teaching. As one of her students notes, “The way she delivers the content is not only unique, but she does it in a way that grabs your attention and forces you to participate. She pushes us to not only be good students, but to also be upstanding people.” Another student adds: “”She is not only a great instructor who makes learning exciting, but she motivates her students to strive for excellence. I was also impressed with the fact she allows her students to experience what she teaches outside of the classroom.

On one occasion, she took students, including myself, to a concert that dealt with the musical genre we were discussing in the curriculum. I was so thrilled to know that my professor cared enough about her students to ensure that what she was teaching was realistically tangible.” Dr. Wiggins’ impact as a teacher and grant-funded researcher extends beyond the campus in such ways as providing arts education experiences for underrepresented youth in community music settings; incorporating undergraduate research assistants into her early childhood center studies on the music and literacy connection; supporting student-derived music service projects with special populations; and promoting creative aging performance activities in the African American senior community through research and service.

A.E. Beach High HOSA Students Set Record Students educate peers and register as organ donors April is National Donate Life Month

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. week, Beach High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) organized an educational campaign to debunk myths surrounding organ donation and to highlight the number of African Americans awaiting a lifesaving transplant. Inspired by King’s quote, “What have you done to help others?” students chose to advocate for organ and tissue donation. Throughout the week, HOSA students, talked to their peers about the importance of donation. The campaign resulted in 210 donor designations, a record number of donor designations coordinated through a HOSA event in Georgia. With the guidance of HOSA advisors and LifeLink of Georgia Educational Specialist, Amanda Hollowell, HOSA students learned the facts about organ donation, such as that one organ donor can save up to eight lives and improve dozens more. Then, they took their newfound knowledge to their peers to make sure their peers

understood the gift of life organ donors provide those waiting for a transplant. The students created a weeklong campaign to answer questions and provide information about donation to engage their peers and teach them about donation. Their campaign worked. Classmates were interested to learn more. They asked questions and, after hearing how donors provide the gift of life, decided to register themselves as organ donors. Beach High’s HOSA program was inspired by their counterpart in Kentucky, who created a similar campaign and registered 67 students as organ donors. Currently, more than five million Georgians have designated their decision to be a life-saving organ and tissue donor on the Donate Life Georgia donor registry at www.DonateLifeGeorgia.org. There is no cost to the donor’s family for organ and/or tissue donation and one person has the potential to save or improve up to 75 lives. Organ donation provided life to more than 33,000 people in 2016 through

heart, kidney, lung, liver, pancreas or intestine transplants and hundreds of thousands more are helped annually through life-enhancing tissue transplants. Without the generosity of organ donors and their families, who support the decision to carry out their loved one’s wishes, a number of those waiting would not live. Almost everyone can donate to help others, regardless of age or past medical history. In fact, age is rarely a factor when determining who can give the gift of life. Additionally, all major religions support donation as an act of charity. LifeLink of Georgia is the non-profit organ and tissue recovery organization in Georgia. As a member of the non-profit statewide coalition to increase donation, Donate Life Georgia, LifeLink is dedicated to empowering the public to save and enhance lives through organ and tissue donation. Learn more about organ and tissue donation and register to be an organ donor at www.DonateLifeGeorgia. org.

The President of the State Bar of Georgia, Pat O’Connor and President of the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia, Jennifer Mock will be at America’s Second Harvest on Thursday, April 6 at 10am to launch the 6th Annual Georgia Legal Food Frenzy, a statewide food and fund drive competition among Georgia lawyers and firms. Quentin L. Marlin, Esquire of Ellis, Painter, Ratterree & Adams and past-president of the Board at America’s Second Harvest has accepted the role of Chair for the Coastal Georgia region of the Legal Food Frenzy. Mr. Marlin stated, “The Legal Food Frenzy is a great campaign to collect much needed funds and food products for our community. It is always great to see the members of the Savannah Bar step up for this worthy cause and competition.” The goal of the “Georgia Legal Food Frenzy” is

to raise food and funds for Georgia’s eight regional food banks, which work with more than 2,400 partner agencies and pantries to distribute more than 140 million pounds of food annually in all 159 counties in Georgia. In Coastal Georgia alone, more than 155,000 people are at-risk for hunger and more than 56,000 are food insecure children. Seniors with special dietary needs and larger households are increasingly turning to food pantries for help due to the economic distress of family members. The food and funds collected locally from this drive will be donated directly to America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to fight hunger in our area. “This drive occurs at just the right time to provide the food we will need to meet the demands of our summer feeding programs,” stated food bank Executive Director, Mary Jane Crouch. One in six

children in Coastal Georgia relies on school lunch for a meal each day. Summer can leave children and their families worrying if they will get enough to eat. No school means no lunch and that’s where Second Harvest’s Summer Feeding program steps in to provide upwards of 165,000 meals to children during the summer months. All attorneys in Georgia, law firms, solo-practitioners, and public sector offices are encouraged to participate. The office which raises the most food and funds statewide will be awarded the Attorney General’s Cup. Awards will also be given to the winners of several different categories. Registration is now open and the competition runs April 17 – 28. Additional details and registration instructions can be found at www.galegalfoodfrenzy.org.

Sports Broadnax Happy at Savannah State

With the recent developments of basketball coaches at Georgetown, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M being fired, some Savannah State fans are wondering if SSU head basketball coach Horace Broadnax will be lured away from the Thunderbolt based institution. Tiger fans can rest easy because, according to Broadnax, the powers to be at any of those three schools have not reached out to him. “I’ve not heard from any of the decision makers,” he states. “Savannah State pays the bills and the mortgage and I am happy here,” he went on the add. Broadnax has ties to Georgetown, Bethune and FAMU. He was a point guard on the Hoyas 1984 NCAA Championship team, was an assistant coach at FAMU (1992-93) and worked as an assistant at Bethune (1993-94). Broadnax was the Bethune head coach from 1997-2002 and won MEAC Coach of the Year honors twice while reviving the program. He also spent some time as an assistant coach at Florida (1994-95) and was the head coach on the junior college level at Valencia Community College (1995-97). Broadnax and his wife are also Florida natives. He is from Plant City while his wife, a local educator, is from the outskirts of Jacksonville. Broadnax, who celebrated his 53rd birthday on March 22, did say that he has heard from some people in the basketball business about some recent

An exhibit opening will be held on Thursday, April 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Westley Wallace “W. W.” Law (1923-2002) was a prominent Civil Rights leader, local historian, historic preservationist, and community leader in Savannah, Georgia. He was also a lover of music, with a large music collection spanning a wide variety of musical genres and technological formats. Law was always eager to share his collection and musical knowledge with those he encountered. Through this exhibit, the City hopes to continue Law’s legacy of education and encourage others to discover music they may not be familiar with. The exhibit features content from W. W. Law’s music, book, periodical, and photograph collections, and includes interactive activities designed to introduce children to the math and science concepts embedded in music. At the exhibit opening on April 13, a special musical performance by the Teddy Adams Trio, featuring Eric Jones and Mitch Hennes, will be presented at 5:30 p.m. in honor of W. W. Kewanna Bush International Travels To Africa Second St. John Missionary Baptist

Church Celebrating 100 Years “Our Journey With GOD”!!

Founder Kewanna Bush

Villagers from Katisi

On January 17-24, Kewanna Bush International, a non-denominational Christian organization that serves those who are suffering from poverty and injustice, regardless of color, belief, or gender, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to find out how the organization could help the poverty stricken natives. The journey encompassed finding some land to build an orphanage for the homeless children. A site was found for the orphanage. I was then taken to a village about 3 hours away from Nairobi called Katisi. The population of Katisi is about 2,000 people. The village had no electricity or running water. Kenya has thousands of villages like Katisi that are in the surrounding area. The village has one well that is about

20 miles away. The villagers have to walk or cycle to get to the well, because no one in the village owns a car. Most of the children that I saw were barefooted and dirty from the dust. It was a sad sight to see, yet they were smiling and waving. Simple things that we take for granted in the USA are like heaven on earth to the villagers. My plans still

Being a coach and teacher on staff at Carrollton High School, he is fondly known as Pastor/ Coach Ricks on and off the football field, basketball court, in the classroom, and/ or on the bus. His off the field affiliation with FCA (Fellowship of Christian

Mother Beulah LaRonce Gordon Welcome to the Holy 14th Women’s Convention Revival “2017” Of Southeast Georgia Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Supervisor of Department of Women, Mother Beulah LaRonce Gordon and Bishop Benjamin P. Collins, Prelate.

How We Celebrate The Special Week Of Passover

We know that Jesus, (Yeshua) who is our Passover, was crucified in the middle of the week which would be on a Wednesday. We also know that he was crucified on the 14th day of Abib, which is the beginning of each New Year according to the Bible. Today, Abib is known as the month of Nissan on the Jewish calendar, but is a combination of the last part of March and the first part of April on our Roman Gregorian calendar. We know that the same date in a year does not always come on the same day of the week, just as perhaps you were born on May 2nd on a Tuesday, but your birthday will not always be on a Tuesday. So it is that Jesus See The Gospel Truth Page 3B

(The Late) Bishop Luther C. Anderson A Man of Faith!

(Sunrise) April 1, 1937 October 1, 2006 (Sunset) Born on April 1, 1937, in Quitman, Mississippi, he was the only child of Luther and Mildred Anderson, where he lived for about two years before his family moved to Chicago, Illinois. On April 9, 1960, Bishop Anderson was united in holy matrimony to Sister Mary Lee Goodson of Bellaire, Ohio. Bishop Anderson joined the Bethlehem Healing Temple under the leadership of the late Bishop Charles E. and Mother Mattie B. Poole. In November 1973, Bishop Anderson was led by God almighty to relocate to Savannah, Georgia (a city he had never been before) from Chicago, Illinois. It was then that the Victory Drive Deliverance Temple Church was founded. On December 16, 1973, the Victory Drive Deliverance Temple held its first service. For nearly 33 years as Pastor, he was a great teacher and visionary!

Tribute To Mother

Luther Edward Vann December 2, 1937 April 6, 2016

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. John1:12

You left us so quickly, we knew you weren’t ready to go. And, we were not ready for you to leave. But the Divine that you always sought decided it was time for you to join the Universe. A year has gone by and we remember your face in that of a passing stranger; we remember the sound of your voice overheard in a fleeting conversation. We surround ourselves with our memories of you and know that you will always be with us. We love you and we miss you. Your Loving Family

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church Secretary Needed

Marjean Williams

On bending knees, I do pray Forty-three years have come to pass, The revolving of this day I still cherish the very last. One who has lost a Mother Can only hold on to the thoughts Nothing like a Father, Sister or Brother That reflections upon you have always brought. How proud I remain Of how others reflect of you, After all this time, it seems insane Why others still here can not do. Just the other day, your oldest sister who is still here Talked to me about family, And how it is suppose to be near I can only reflect, cause you are not here. I let her know, That I can only be responsible for me The comment revived my glow What I try to do is pleasing to thee! Reach for the moon And fall upon a star, You left I still believe to soon But thank God, I know where you are. A place of peace One you do deserve The day of my release I too will have the nerve. To join you for the reunion That so many are scared to attend Your Mother would always tell me to get my ticket to Glory I guess others still have fences to mend. One can not run Or even try to hide They should look upon it as fun And to the pearly gates they can glide. Everyone wants to go But no one is ready to leave That is why the day nor the hour God does not show The suspense is their reprieve! What joy I have in knowing My Mother was among the very best My pride is always showing Yet I still pray for the rest! They too can improve their record And join the likes of thee Helping their children to obtain The values that you instilled in me. For those who try And their children fail, They have no reason to cry They just want be on board, when the Glory Ship sets sail! Love Eternally, C. Leon Lee, II (Son)

able cause was sufficient to send to make the personal sacrifices December Term 2016 Grand Jury Presentments an indictment forward for trial. necessary to take on such a vital Dear Judge Walmsley, It is with great pride that the Grand Jury for the 2016 December Term performed and concluded all civil functions and duties mandated by the State of Georgia and Chatham County. During our three month term the Grand Jury was charged with and completed the following: 1. Hearing evidence on Bills of Indictment, questioning witnesses, deliberating the facts of each indictment, and returning either a True Bill or a No Bill. 2. Inspection of financial reports from the Office of Clerk Superior Court and Office of the Sheriff, Chatham County, GA. 3. Inspection of the Chatham County Jail facility. District Attorney Meg Heap, Chief Assistant District Attorney Greg McConnell, and the entire District Attorney’s Office did an outstanding job presenting their cases, sharing their legal knowledge, providing guidance, and educating jurors throughout our term of duty. This Grand Jury was informed we were one of the busiest the Eastern Judicial Circuit had summoned over the past year with up to 50 cases per day being presented for deliberation at times. Our ability to complete the work at hand is a credit to each and every individual that served on the December 2016 Grand Jury and a testament to Mrs. Heap and her staff. Indictments brought before this Grand Jury included Identity Theft, Elder Abuse, Domestic Violence, Child Molestation, Rape, Burglary, Sexual Battery, Assault, Murder, and various other crimes related to drug and gang activity. At times the evidence could be both shocking and upsetting as the prosecuting attorneys presented their cases and witnesses gave testimony. The amount of drug activity taking place throughout Chatham County and the City of Savannah is unsettling to say the least. When reviewing our case loads we noted that this drug activity not only seems to be the driving force in the increases of gang activity, but is also a major contributor to every negative issue facing Savannah’s inner and outlying communities. Domestic and family violence, child abuse and endangerment, theft, and murder all go hand in hand with the unacceptably high amount of drugs circulating throughout our neighborhoods and schools.

It is truly astonishing the things people post on social media, text, or video in the commission of a crime, however, I can say it does make the charges presented by the DA’s office more concrete. This can also be said in reference to the videos taken by police officers when in pursuit of a suspect and making an arrest. Police body cams recording every event leading up to, during, and after an arrest were essential in determining whether a True Bill or No Bill would be presented throughout our time as jurors. In addition, time lines for both audio and text conversations, GPS tracking of a phone to locate a suspect, photos and video either posted on social media or maintained on a defendant’s phone were also used effectively by officers of the law and prosecuting attorneys. A picture, or video in some cases, is worth a thousand words. The benefits of this new technology and the information it provides cannot be overstated when available for use by our police officers, prosecutors, judges, and jurors in the performance of their duties.

On January 18th, members of the Grand Jury were given the opportunity to tour and inspect the Chatham County jail. We would like to give special thanks to Sheriff John T. Welcher, his deputies, and the entire staff for taking time out of their busy schedules to walk us through this impressive facility. Throughout the inspection all staff members were very courteous, professional, and went out of their way to ensure our safety. As we were escorted through the numerous departments we were impressed with the overall cleanliness which included the inmates food preparation and dining areas. Presentations were given by various department managers, and lunch, which was healthy and well prepared, was graciously provided in the staff’s cafeteria. After lunch, jurors were taken to inspect the jail’s medical department which is fully staffed by medical and psychiatric professionals who have the tremendous task of dealing with the hundreds of inmates processed through the jail each year. Unfortunately, many of these inmates come directly off the streets, from violent homes, are drug addicts, or are in a horrible physical and mental state. Thanks to the efforts of these caring and professional individuals, many of the inmates are returned back into society healthier and with a new lease on life. To our surprise we discovered inmates are given a variety of ways to gain valuable job experience and complete their education thus earning vocational certificates, high school diplomas, or college degrees if they have the desire and drive to do so. One such program mentioned during our tour is “Operation New Hope,” set up in cooperation with the Chatham County Humane Society and private donations which give unadoptable dogs a second chance at life. In turn, inmates participating in the program learn how to train and care for these dogs giving them valuable experience they can use to find a job once they have completed their sentences. This tour and inspection of Chatham County’s jail was an informative and humbling experience for all the jurors that were able to make the trip. Sheriff John T. Welcher, along with his deputies and staff, should be commended on the outstanding job and service they are providing the citizens of Chatham County and State of Georgia.

role within our judicial system. With that being said, it is our hope that some day through the hard work of our honorable police officers, proactive efforts put forth by the District Attorney’s Office, and education within our schools and communities we will see a noticeable reduction in the crime that has become epidemic throughout Chatham County and City of Savannah.
