Commissioner Jay Jones has a plan to change the reading habits of young people in Chatham County. On February 26-March 1, the Economic Opportunity Authority of Savannah-Chatham (EOA) hosted a “Read Across America” Program for sites here in Chatham and Effingham Counties. Joined by twenty-eight men from our community, they read books to over 650 children. This effort was made possible, as part of the “Assault on

Illiteracy Program” a term coined from a nationally mandated program of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Commissioner Jay Jones states, “It is important to teach the love of reading to young people. When young people love reading it opens up a joy for imagination and a love for creation.” During the winter holidays Change 4 the Next Level (C4NL), a program started over 10 years ago to help young people in Chatham County, host-

ed its 1st Annual C4NL Book Drive and collected more than 1300 books. From this book drive, 1000 books were donated to the Savannah Chatham County Public School Systems (SCCPSS) as a challenge issued by a local group here in Savannah, Georgia and the remaining 300 plus books were donated to the EOA through this reading initiative. As a firm believer that reading is an answer to eliminating long term poverty with young people,

Commissioner Jones wants to change a culture through proactive measures. One of his favorite quotes, “You can give someone a fish to feed them for a day, or you can teach them how to fish and that someone will learn how to survive.” It is time to teach our young people survival skills that benefit them long term. Please join EOA at our next community engagement entitled “Week of the Young Child” on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, from 10:00-11:30 am.

Savannah Alderman Van Johnson was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap after an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) into a gun buy-back program organized by Johnson. Upon review of the GBI investigative report in this matter, I concur with the GBI’s assessment that there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Mr. Johnson,” Heap said in a one-paragraph letter to GBI officials in Statesboro. Johnson announced the gun buy-back program in November 2016, with Savannah Youth City, Inc. a local non-profit, as a grassroots effort to address the spike of homicides and aggravated assaults with a gun. Guns were turned in for a cash, no questions

asked. The program was very successful, yielding guns of various sizes and calibers. Some guns were voluntarily surrendered by parents who found them in the possession of their children. Heap requested a GBI review last summer after County Manager Lee Smith, made a formal request for a “criminal investigation into the allegation” involving the nonprofit Savannah Youth City Inc. “gun buy-back program, process of buy-back, securing of firearms etc.” Johnson, also a Georgia certified law enforcement officer, expressed appreciation for the GBI’s thorough examination of the facts, relief that the investigation is over, but a strong resolve to end gun violence. “I refuse to sit in the relative comfort of City Hall and watch so many of our young people lose their lives to homicide and suicide.” Johnson said. He adds, “It is imperative that we get guns out of the hands of those who should not have them and to do a better job in preventing the theft of legal firearms that are converted for illegal use. Each one of those guns represents a minimum of one life that can be taken if it’s in the wrong hands,”

Mary Magdalene

M y n am e i s M ar y Magdalene. I have a sister named Martha and a brother named Lazarus. I was the black sheep in my family for a long time and people stoned women like me back in the day. I was a promiscuous woman. One day, some men wanted to stone me for my sins when they were the ones who had committed fornication and adultery with me. But, Jesus changed all of that. He forgave me for all of my sins; and even though Jesus changed me, people still looked down on me. Ever since Eve messed up in the Garden of Eden, women have had to suffer! [Gen. 3:6, St. John 8: 1-11] I heard that even up to this day, women still have to suffer in child birth, and that many women today are still being treated as secondary citizens. I also heard that women in America had to fight for a Woman Suffrage Act that was passed in 1920 to give them the privilege to vote! [Gen. 3:16, https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Womwn%27s_sufferage]

I love the Lord with all my heart because he forgave me, for all of my sins. One day when Jesus was having dinner at a friend’s house, I knelt as his feet where he sat. I washed his feet with my tears and dried his feet with my hair. Then I poured the precious sweet perfumed powder from my alabaster box on his feet. After he raised my brother Lazarus from the dead, I did it again, six days before Passover when he would be crucified. Judas said, “That expense perfume could have been used to raise money for the poor.” But he only said that because he was a thief! Someone said, “Get up from there, a woman’s place is in the kitchen!” My sister Martha was in the kitchen, but, I wasn’t hardly about to get up from my master’s feet and go in that kitchen. Jesus told them to leave me alone, because I was anointing him for his burial and that I would be remembered though out the all ages for this tribute that I had done towards him. Thank you Jesus for loving a woman such as I was!

[Matthew 26: 12-13, Luke 7:36-50, 8: 1-2, 10: 38-42, St. John 12: 1-7 Well, just as Jesus had proclaimed, be was buried, but only after he was brutally crucified for our transgressions and for our iniquities. He shed his blood to redeem us from death of the corrupt blood that Mr. and Mrs. Adam caused to trickle down through all generations to every nation, because of what they had eaten. But that’s not how the story ends, three days later he arose, stayed on earth for forty days, then ascended, and he’s coming back again, just as he said that he would. [Isaiah 53:5, St. John 19: 14-18, Matthew12: 40] See Gospel Truth Page 2B

The Broken Chain

He Only Takes the Best

May 26, 1938 February 27, 2015

I little knew that morning, God was going to call your name. In life I loved you dearly, in death I do the same. It broke my heart to loose you, you did not go alone, for part of me went with you, the day God called you home. You left me beautiful memories your love is still my guide, and though we cannot see you, you’re always at my side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Your Loving Family

Minister Eddie H. Kinsey

October 14, 1912 February 24, 1992

By Ron Tranmer

A heart of gold stopped beating. Two shining eyes at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Little did we know that morning. The sorrow the day would bring. The end was sudden, the shock severe. We never knew that death was so near. When days are sad and lonely, And evening shadows fall. We hear your voice and see your face.

(except holidays)

Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. & 2 p.m.-5 p.m.

Your sweet memory lingers on. God knew you had to leave us. But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you. The day God called you home.

He was crucified on a Wednesday and buried after three o’clock that evening; so I knew that he would arise after three o’clock on Saturday, the Sabbath, as he said.I wanted to be there when he arose, but I waited until the Sabbath was passed, and went to the grave after six o’clock Saturday evening, (which begins the first day of the week) and the grave was empty! An angel told me that my Savior had arisen. I so desperately wanted to see him. So, he appeared to me and told me to go tell his disciples that he has arisen. I ran to tell the Good News! Why then shouldn’t a woman preach the gospel and tell how Jesus shed his blood. The woman Eve caused the blood to be messed up. But God chose Virgin Mary to carry Jesus who is the Word, and me, Mary Magdalene, a woman, to tell the story of his redemptive blood. Thank you Jesus for choosing me, Mary Magdalene! [Genesis 1: 5, Leviticus 23: 32, Daniel 9: 27, Matthew 27: 45-46, 28: 1-7, St. John 20:1,16-19] Your name most likely is not Mary Magdalene, but you can repent of your sins and love the Lord even as she loved Jesus, and he will forgive your sins even as he forgave Mary Magdalene.
