by Walter Moore

The Savannah State football team will not have spring football practice this spring. SSU had a 896 multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score for the 2015-16 academic year which resulted in the team being hit with Level 2 penalties from the NCAA. During the 2017 season, the Tigers were limited to 5 days and 16 hours of

countable activity per week. After the season ended, the team was limited to 4 hours of countable activity per week. The NCAA requires a minimum of 930 for programs to avoid penalties. Although the team is not allowed to have organized spring practice, players can gather among themselves to work out.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference passed out their annual post season awards recently and several members of the Savannah State basketball teams were among those honored. Junior guard Dexter McClanahan was named to the men’s second team while senior guard Alante Fenner was named to the third team. On the women’s side, junior forward Kaylee Allen was picked for the

second team. McClanahan, who hails from Stockbridge, Georgia, averaged 15.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game during the regular season. Fenner produced 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. Butler Tour: The Soul of America

A Blast from the Past For Blessed Sacrament School

The LB4 Foundation would like to take this opportunity and thank the staff, faculty and students for allowing us to be guest speakers at Blessed Sacrament School. It was a blast; there is just not enough days in February to spotlight all the African American history especially our icons in Savannah. The students got an African American history lesson that would follow them for a lifetime. Linda Wilder Bryan, President of the LB4 Foundation was in rare form when she performed in character about astonishing history of Susie Baker King and Mother Miltada Beasley you had to see it to believe it. Former Harlem Globetrotter Larry Gator Rivers gave a detail account of his on the court experience of being a part of history when his high school team Alfred Beach High of Savannah was the first African American high school in Georgia to win a State Championship under the GHSA. He also recited a poem call “Just Because your Black” he did a fantastic job the kids loved him. I gave them a history lesson about Alice Woodley McKane, Otis Johnson, Walter Contractor Brown, W.W. Law, Piccolo Marion, Lee Johnson and many more. We had a fun filled African American history day at Blessed Sacrament School. It’s one of the missions of LB4 Foundation and After to continue sharing the contributions of African Americans whose determination and unselfish acts and desires helped make a difference in their communities throughout the year in speech. Characterization and prose to children in this community. We all must be committed to saving our living sons allowing our children to see where they come from allows them to see where they can go.

Former Savannah State football coach Earnest Wilson has been fired as the head football coach at Elizabeth City State, effective immediately. Wilson took over as head coach of the Division II program in February, 2016. In his first season, he led the Vikings to a 5-5 overall record; 4-3 in the CIAA. He was also named the 2016 CIAA Football Coach of the Year. In 2017, ECSU finished the season with a 4-6 overall record (2-4 in the CIAA). Wilson had a salary

of $100,000 per year but $55,000 of that came from being a member of the ECSU faculty where he taught physical education classes. Wilson’s teaching contract is set to expire at the end of May while his coaching contract ends at the end of June. Before coaching at Elizabeth City State, Wilson was the head football coach at Savannah State where he put together a 2-32 record in three seasons.

Sandra Workman Running for Georgia Senate District 1

Sandra Workman, a Richmond Hill Democrat, is the party’s nominee to the Georgia Senate for District #1, running against Republican incumbent Ben Watson in November 2018. Workman is the first Democratic challenger to the Republican-held seat since 2010, and only the second challenger since 2004 for District #1, which covers Bryan County, and portions of Liberty and Chatham counties. As one of a new generation of candidates who will reach across the aisle to achieve bipartisan goals, Workman’s agenda is dominated by incentives for business growth, improved voter security, environmental concerns, and sensible gun control laws. “I will represent my constituents on issues that matter to each and every one of us: protecting our beautiful coastline from

environmental ruin, introducing common sense legislation to keep weapons out of the wrong hands, putting Georgia’s economy on a path for the robust, sustainable growth that leads to job creation and prosperity, and enhancing the security of our voting system to ensure that every vote counts. These are among the many issues everyone - whether white or black, Democrat or Republican, rich or poor – agree on. I will bring my leadership and organizational skills to benefit the people of Georgia by fighting to protect the interests of voters and their families,” Workman states (ActBlue.com). An 18-year resident of Georgia, Ms. Workman’s corporate background includes having served as Director of Information Security Program for Time Warner Cable; a Senior Manager for The Home Depot company; and as a consultant for Deloitte Consulting, one of the U.S.’s largest public accounting and consulting companies.
