“WEEPING TIME” COMMEMORATION 2018

A Program by Organization to Commemorate Enslaved African Americans, OCEANS, Inc.; Journey by Faith, Inc.; Georgia Historical Society; Ivory Bay CDC; and Otis J. Brock III Elementary School

On March 2 and 3, 1859, the largest slave sale in recorded American history took place at the former Ten Broeck horse racecourse in west Savannah, Georgia. 429 men, women, boys and girls from the Butler plantations near Darien and St. Simons Island, Georgia, were transported to Savannah and sold. On the slave sale dates, it rained torrentially in Savannah, stopping

only after the last enslaved person was sold. Families were torn apart and scattered throughout the south; many never saw each other again. African Americans call this traumatic event the “Weeping Time” because, seemingly, God must have been weeping at this horrendous event. In 2008, 149 years after the “Weeping Time” slave sale, the city of Savannah and the Georgia Historical

Society erected a Georgia Historical Marker a quarter of a mile from the actual slave sale site. On this coming March 2nd, 2018, on the 159th anniversary of the slave sale, please join us in honoring those who were sold. The goal is for 436 people to “stand in” for the 436 enslaved people who were listed to be sold at that auction, and the 429 actually sold. Presenters / Guides

The umbrellas also evoke the documented torrential rains that fell on the two slave sale days, stopping only after the last enslaved person had been sold.

By Lawrence Bunny Bryan, III

February is the second month of the year and it is the shortest month of the year as it is the only month to have less than 30 days. So February was chosen as the month to celebrate Black History Month. The event grew out of Negro History Week, the brain child of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. I have three problems with the so called Black History Month 1. Change the name to African American History Month 2. Why we only celebrate National African Americans? 3. We in Savannah should take the opportunity to celebrate our Extraordinary African American Pioneers, who helped desegregate this city. They were so many but I don’t have enough room to name them all so I’ll name a just few. 1. Alice Woodly McKane – First African American woman to work as a doctor in Savannah, GA was born 1865. She endured major setbacks, both parents died when she was seven; she lost her vision for three years despite obstacles; and she graduated from the institute for colored youth in Philadelphia in 1889. She established the McKane Hospital which opened in 1896. The hospital was later taken over by local African American doctors in 1901 and renamed Charity Hospital. 2. Marion Lee Johnson is a product of the Chatham County School System a student at Moses Jackson School and a 1963 graduate Thompkins High School. After earning her degree from Talledega College, she secured a position at Boeing. If you watched the movie “Hidden Figures” Ms. Johnson played an important role in the mission as an associate engineer with Boeing, testing where the rockets attached to the aircraft would fall. Mrs. Johnson was part of a team of African American women who played a major part in the Apollo 11 moon landing. Her team was responsible for preparing data input for simulations called vehicles piece trajectories. They needed to know where pieces would land if the rocket fell to earth after launch. Her expert math skills were very important for this mission. Johnson’s name is etched in the “Roll of Honor” at the Smithsonian Institute for her successful role in the space mission. She has also received accolades from Boeing for a series of successful rocket tests without causing any damage.

During research for new building project in 2016, an old map indicated that a “colored graveyard” might have been on nearby land. Ground penetration radar showed possible anomalies, however, the archaeological work did not

uncover any burials and the anomalies were determined to be a dense section of compact clay. The exact location of a former cemetery will likely never be known but SSU will honor those who lived and worked the plantation, and may have been buried in the area.

Walter Brown has been the only African American to ever own a Complete Concrete business in Savannah. With the help of his sons Walter manufactured his concrete at the crack of dawn every morning for 40 years in his back yard on Tybee Island. He accomplished all of this with just a 6th grade education. 4. Otis Johnson was

Annual Black Marriage Day Celebration at Bethel M.b. Church Of Savannah, Inc. “What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder” Mark 10:9

Reverend Dr. Jerome William Baker and the Bethel M. B. It takes a” Village Concept”. We are always asking parents and grand-parents to please bring the children to church to plant a spiritual seed about pleasing God and being of service to our fellow man. Kids started coming to our church and we asked what it will take for them to keep coming, they replied Fruity Pebbles for breakfast. We loaded up with their favorite cereals, and other breakfast treats, now we have them present almost every Sunday and we now have a Youth Choir. But this celebration is for all couples who kept their marriage vows sacred. Those regardless of hard-

ships and circumstances kept the faith and became good parents and grandparents. We will not ask your personal age but if you have been married sixty (60), fifty (50), forty (40), 30, 20, years or less. We have a treat for you. Please join us as we try our best to reward all Married couples. We will renew our wedding vows, share our declaration of love to each other, “Jump the Broom”, cut a beautiful wedding cake; and have pictures taken. All of the aforementioned, is following a powerful message by Pastor Marque Johnson and the Second St. John congregation who accepted our invitation to be our special presiders. We are waiting on you!

Payne Theological Seminary founded by the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1844 is offering a Masters of Divinity Program for pastors and lay persons to provide an opportunity for local clergy, lay, coastal Georgia and surrounding areas to meet the demands of distance learning and post gradu-

ate degree programs. This program provides support for students to have class instruction time while lessening the need to travel long distances for studies. Anyone interested in enrolling in the seminary and participating in the symposium please feel free to come out to the symposium that will take place in the New Students Center

on the campus of Savannah State University, starting with registration on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and Saturday (8:00 a.m.), March 2-3, 2018. For additional information contact Dr. Daniel Stevenson at dstevenson122@ aol.com. All religious groups are welcome to participate in this ecumenical opportunity.

He wants you and me and all of us to come back to Him and not end up in the Lake of fire (Hell). The devil is waiting for you. He was thrown out of heaven because he wanted to take over, but he did not create any one thing or anyone. So out he was thrown and his angels; and now he is going to and fro to devour those who are subject to evil and wickedness and has no fellowship or relationship with the one True Holy God who made the Heavens and the earth and all that is in it. God did it all! In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth, Genesis 1:1. Read it all. Then He said, “let us make man in our image, verse 26 in Genesis and verse 27 – female. I thank God for all He has done is doing and will to for me. I am His and I love Him truly. I love Him with all my heart, soul, mind and Strength. All that is within me lives for Jesus! I am His property now and forever. And I can’t thank Him enough. I am so very very grateful to God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each day I thank God. Amen. 5 Ways To Fight Fatigue And Energize Your Life

Feeling tired is a common complaint people express. Sometimes the self-description morphs into “I feel tired all the time,” and experts say that’s when extreme tiredness becomes better known as fatigue. Fatigue, when someone lacks energy and feels exhausted mentally or physically, can negatively impact performance at work, family life, and social relationships. Often, it is not a medical issue, but one that can be reversed by a lifestyle change. “People would be amazed at how much energy they’d have and how much better they’d feel if they treated themselves better,” says Dr. Raj Gupta (www. drrajgupta.com), founder of Soul Focus Wellness Center and author of Wellness Center Solution: How Physicians Can Transform Their Practices, Their Income and Their Lives. “We all have busy lives, but there are simple ways to not let your schedule overwhelm you and make your health suffer as a consequence.” Stress, Dr. Gupta says, can lead to fatigue symptoms such as a craving for sweets and salty foods, difficulty sleeping and irritability. He suggests five ways to fight fatigue and regain energy: Run on the right fuel. A busy lifestyle can lead to fast food or carry-out. Therefore, preparation is important, Dr. Gupta says. “Your energy and production are directly proportional to how you fuel your body,” he says. “Always be thinking about what you will be eating later. Ideally, your diet should consist of eating approximately five times a day with a combination of complex carbohydrates – fruits and veggies – and lean protein.” Cut caffeine, add water. Research indicates too much caffeine causes fatigue in some people. The stimulation wears off and more caffeine is needed to produce the feelings of energy and clear-headedness. Dr. Gupta recommends cutting back on all things containing caffeine – coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks. Also, water should be the preferred liquid. “A person is recommended to drink half their weight in ounces per day,” Gupta says. “You can be dehydrated and not even know it.” Stop burning the candle on both ends. Dr. Gupta says fatigue is often directly related to sleep deprivation. “When you sleep is when most of your healing takes place,” Gupta says. “Without enough sleep, your immune system breaks down. It’s recommended you get 6-8 hours of sleep per night.” Get regular exercise. Gupta stresses that no matter how busy people are, they need to make time for exercise on a regular basis, ideally for 20 to 30-minute sessions a minimum of four times per week. “Regular exercise helps regulate your mood, makes you sleep more soundly and erases the little mistakes in our diet,” Dr. Gupta says. Body adjustments. The body can come more alive with a chiropractic alignment that provides proper functioning. “Chiropractic adjustments to the spinal column relieve the pressure of a choked or pinched nerve caused by the rotated vertebra,” Dr. Gupta says. “A chiropractic adjustment increases one’s vitality and turns up their energy.” “Living life with zest, vitality and complete health is easier than you think,” Dr. Gupta says. “By managing these five simple aspects, one can maintain a healthy, fulfilling life.” About Dr. Raj Gupta - Dr. Raj Gupta (www.drrajgupta.com),
