Principal Andrea B. Williams Memorialized By Renaming of Spencer Elementary School

Principal Andrea B. Williams passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2017. As a 34 year em-

ployee of Savannah-Chatham Public Schools, she provided an immeasurable contribution to the growth of our school district. Principal Williams was also an integral part of Spencer Elementary and the surrounding community, serving as principal of the school since 2007. Her contributions to the school climate, operations, and academics guided the school to its current success. Based on those contributions, an exception to Policy FDC regarding the naming of facilities was requested of the Board and granted prior to approval of the renaming of Spencer Elementary School. It will now be known as Andrea

B. Williams Elementary School. The exception to policy was required to establish the renaming of the replacement Spencer Elementary school in time for the opening of the new facility which is scheduled for January 2, 2018, when staff return from winter break. The request was supported by the Spencer Elementary School Council, PTA, staff, members of the community and district staff as a way to commemorate and honor the deep connection the Williams family has with the school, and the service of Andrea B. Williams.

Asbury Memorial Theatre Announces ‘Plaza Suite’ as Spring Production

Auditions for Plaza Suite to be held January 8-9 Asbury Memorial Theatre is pleased to announce it will present Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” as its 2018 production, with auditions to be held in January. The play is composed of three acts, each involving different characters but all set in Suite 719 of New York City’s Plaza Hotel. Three

middle-age couples face three very different – and often hilarious – challenges to their relationships. Auditions will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 8-9 at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Parts are available for male and female actors from about ages 25 to 55+. The three couples could be played by the same two actors, or by different actors for each act. In addition, there are walk-on roles for a waiter/ bellhop, maid, secretary and bride. Actors should be prepared to do cold readings from the script. If necessary, callback auditions will be scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11. Rehearsals will begin Monday, Jan. 15 and six performances are scheduled between March 2 and March 11 over four evenings and two matinees. The production is being directed by Ronnie Spilton. Neil Simon is celebrated for his comedic scripts, which explore family relationships. The humor of his work is enhanced by sharp contrast with bittersweet drama or pain – in Plaza Suite, the pain of troubled marriages. However, Simon spins his tale with deep compassion for his very real characters – and this is the genius of his humor. Audition forms and sides will be provided. Those auditioning are encouraged to bring a professional headshot, or a recent close-up photo, along with a theatrical resume to attach to the audition form. No appointments are necessary and it is only necessary to attend one night of auditions. Asbury Memorial UMC is located at 1008 E Henry St, Savannah, GA 31401, at the corner of Waters Avenue. Please park in the lot behind the church and enter through the rear door (look for handicap ramp) of the Educational Building. For more information, please visit http://asburymemorial.org/theatre/ or e-mail rspilton@gmail.com. Asbury Memorial Theatre is a thriving community theater in Savannah. Since 1994, audiences have delighted in the theatre’s plays, musicals, revues and light opera productions, which have earned several Best of Savannah awards.

Public Invited to West Bay Streetscape Meeting

The public is invited to attend the final community meeting for West Bay Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Warner Street (east side of the Bay Street viaduct). This meeting will feature a presentation of the final Conceptual Design and provide an opportunity for the public to provide final comments. West Bay Streetscape Improvement Initiative – Meeting 3: Final Presentation Tuesday, December 19th 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Coastal Georgia Center 305 Fahm Street, Savannah

The initial Downtown Streetscape Improvement Project area addressed Bay Street from East Broad to MLK. In recognition of West Bay Street as a major gateway into downtown Savannah, the City of Savannah recently added West Bay Street from MLK to Warner Street (base of the viaduct bridge) to the study area. This phase of the Streetscape Initiative began in June 2017. The community has been actively engaged in the process through two community meetings plus an online survey. “We have had great public input throughout this process,” says Bridget Lidy, Director, Tourism Management & Ambassadorship Department for the City of Savannah. “The community continues to be actively engaged and we appreciate the input from all who have participated.” This last meeting for the West Bay Streetscape Improvement Initiative will unveil the final conceptual design. Building from the earlier work of the Downtown Streetscape Improvement Project, the consultant team, led by EDSA, is utilizing a similar process in working actively with the community throughout the conceptual design process. The City’s website, www.savannahga.gov/ streetscape, includes more information about the process to date, including presentations from previous meetings.

SSU competed in the SIAC from 1968 until 2000 when the university was approved for Division I membership as an independent. Savannah State was accepted into the Mid

Savannah Herald Newspaper Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as a provisional member in 2010 and attained full membership a year later. “With the input of the athletics transition taskforce and the athletics department, it was determined that the SIAC was the best fit for SSU and its students,” said Dozier. “I look forward to renewing old SIAC rivalries and establishing new ones that will engage SSU Tiger fans.” SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore stated: “Welcoming Savannah State University to the SIAC not only adds a 15th outstanding institution, but also restores important historic and geographic rivalries, which I’m certain SIAC alumni, students and fans will enjoy.” “We are very pleased to welcome Savannah State University back to the SIAC,” stated Council of Presidents Chairman and Miles College President George T. Letter To The Editor

Honorees....

REPORT CARD OF FIRST DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES - FIFTH EDITION

The City of Savannah has a City Manager form of government. The City Manager runs the city, along with a majority vote by City Council. Several mistakes, have been made with the Savannah city budget. The water bill fee is mistake number one. Bonds floated to the tune of 40 million dollars is mistake number two. The streetscapes of Broughton Street, Bay Street, and River Street at 8 million dollars plus can be delayed. The parking garage on River Street is a 30 million dollar project that is already underway. This demonstrates that the City of Savannah’s’ concentration of resources are for downtown Savannah. The City Managers’ recommendation to de-merge our Metro Police Department is mistake number three. This action reduced the city budget by 9 million dollars. The 9 million dollars that the city will not receive from the county is a threat to public safety. Our Metro Police Department was not perfect, but it was solid. Today, Chatham County has formed the stand alone County Police Department, while the City of Savannah did not have a plan in place or a plan B. The demerger has brought us to this point. Savannah Police Department does not have the money to compete with county police salaries. Savannah is losing police officers that were trained together and have worked together for the good of all citizens of Chatham County and Savannah. The City Managers’ recommendation and Council approval have placed a hole in the budget and the new officers we will need to replace and train will require millions of new tax dollars. How will Savannah raise the money needed to restore police protection for its citizens? The FIRE TAX is how the city of Savannah plans to pay for its’ mistake to de-merge the City and County Police Department. The citizens of Savannah pay city and county taxes and this included police and fire protection. We should all be up in arms! With a poverty rate of 26%, along with many struggling households, a 240 dollar or a 370 dollar bill will hurt. If we give a penny to this tax, what will protect us from a 500 dollar fee next year? The fire tax fee will impact our lives in multiple ways. Any resident of Savannah that has shelter will be affected. If a family or person rents, this tax will be passed on from landlord to tenant. Churches will be hit with the fire tax. Churches should take the City of Savannah to court because they are tax exempt by law. Our Chatham public schools will not be spared by this fire tax. If this tax is imposed on our schools, we better get ready for another tax increase. Our school system should fight this tax in court. I hope that all of us will oppose this tax and inform the City Manager, and Council, that it was not the citizens’ that blew up the budget. CORRECTION TO BE CONSIDERED: A delay on the streetscape projects of 8 million dollars plus, along with the 9 million dollars lost from the demerger of county and city police departments, would correct the budget. The nearly 13 million deficit would be replaced with a 4 million dollar surplus. The 8 million dollars plus, along with the 9 million from the county, would achieve the surplus. This demerger can and should be corrected by the City of Savannah resending its vote to de-merge the City and County Police Department. 2020 ELECTION ???

Isaiah prophesies again saying, “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful, counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” [Isaiah 7: 14, 9: 6-7, Matthew 1: 23] Yes, God did perform this miracle, as he proclaimed! God sent the angel Gabriel to a virgin named Mary and she willingly accepted the favor and honor of being the chosen one to conceive by the Holy Ghost the Savior of the world. God sent the angel Gabriel to Joseph, the man whom Mary was engaged to marry, and informed him in a dream that Mary had conceived in her womb from

remember “the reason for the season.” We will observe our annual Watch Night Service on Sunday, December 31st beginning at 10:00 pm. The final night of the year finds many Christians reflecting on the events of the past and looking ahead to the future. This is a night devoted to a new covenant with our Lord, to a new commitment to witness and service. There is a deep

sense of blessing for many that they have begun a new year with their sisters and brothers of the Christian family in God’s house. The Second Arnold family is extending an open invitation to all our family, neighbors, and friends to come and celebrate with us during these joyful celebrations.

Paul in his first letter to the church at Corinth refers to Jesus as the second Adam. “And so it is written, the first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit, the first Adam was natural and not spiritual and afterward that which is spiritual came. The first man Adam was of the earth, earthly. The second man is the Lord Jesus from heaven.” The first Adam and his wife, Eve, caused all humans blood to be corrupt and die because of what they ate in disobedience to God. However, the second man Adam, who is Jesus, was born into this world, to die in the place of humans if humans will receive him and his blood and have eternal life. [I Corinthians 15: 45-47, 55, Romans 8: 13] After the first Adam caused death to invade, God’s plan was to save mankind from death by providing an example for humans to learn how to regain eternal life by overcoming Satan who tempted Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit, who gave to her husband Adam and he did also eat. Isaiah said, “God saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor; therefore God’s right arm brought salvation unto him, and his righteousness it sustained him.” Paul further expounds on how God would execute this plan. He said,” It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins; wherefore, when he

God. So, Joseph took Mary whom he loved to be his bride, and thus our Lord and Savior Jesus was born as a human into this world and is also known as the Second Man Adam who would not fail as the first Adam yielded to temptation. Jesus, our example, was crucified, but he arose from the dead and he lives forever more, even as they who died, or will die, but have accepted Jesus and his atoning blood, will arise and live forever more! LEGAL NOTICE

Grand Jury Presentments September 2017 Term The Honorable John E. Morse, Jr. Judge, Superior Court 133 Montgomery Street Savannah, GA 31401 Your Honor, As foremen of the September 2017, Term Grand Jury to the Chatham Superior Court, I would like to report that our term has adjourned as of November 29, 2017. Grand Jury Service The Grand Jury for the September 2017, term has concluded rapidly. Throughout our thirteen weeks of service, it is my belief that each member of the Grand Jury sustained a very critical role. While serving each Wednesday morning, each Juror actively participated in examining and verifying evidence, as well as determining the existence of probable cause in each case presented. This has been a tremendous learning experience for me personally.

LEGAL NOTICE

The Grand Jury The Grand Jury was exposed to a wide range of complicated/ complex cases which sometimes brought forth mixed emotions. As we adjourn September 2017 Grand Jury, I believe we all have become better citizens to our community. Some of us now wish to pursue and/or become more involved within the community. We, as citizens of Chatham County, should begin working together in bridging the gap between Law Enforcement and the community. It has been broken for long enough. Most of the cases heard were minor children robbing, stealing and killing. We must revert back to our basic morals and values, while clinging to the mantra, “it takes a village.” We need more resources such as after school programs, academic summer camp programs within the inner city, as well as middle and high school mental health courses. Implementation of parenting classes for young adults under the age of 17 would also benefit the community. It is time to make a difference!
