Sports By Walter Moore SSU Snaps Losing Streak SSU 27 Norfolk State 9 Savannah State snapped their ten game losing streak with a 27-9 win over Norfolk State on October 28. The Tiger victory spoiled the Norfolk State homecoming celebration. It was the first time SSU defeated a team on the road since beating North Carolina Central in 2011, a span of 40 games. The Savannah State win came against a Spartan squad who had heavy hearts. A day before the contest, NSU freshman defensive lineman Nick Ackies was shot to death by a former Norfolk State football player. The Price Stadium crowd of 17,218 saw the Spartans take a 6-0 lead in the first quarter but the Tigers answered with 16

seconds left before halftime when Derek Kirkland caught a 19 yard touchdown pass from D’Vonn Gibbons. With 18 seconds left in the third quarter, Jaylen McCloud scored on a five yard run to give SSU a 13-6 edge. The Spartans got as close as 13-9 in the fourth before Savannah State (1-7) pulled away with a pair of touchdown runs. Gibbons scored on a two yard run with 4:20 left and Nicholas Bentley scored on a five yard run with just under a minute remaining. McCloud rushed for a career-high 132 yards while Gibbons threw for 120 yards. JaMichael Baldwin had four receptions for 46 yards while Isaiah Bennett was in on nine tackles.

Catching Up With… Isiah Brown IV

This week’s feature is with Dr. Isiah D. Brown IV. Isiah is the oldest child of Isiah David III and Carolyn F. Brown. Both parents are retired but still work. “My father is a retired staff accountant. He currently works with the city of Savannah and Chatham County public schools. My mother also a retired teacher. She taught for about 30 years at Pearl Smith, Richard Arnold, Jenkins, Savannah High, Beach and Groves but works as a substitute now.” Isiah is a Savannah native who grew up on 34th and Ash Street. He says he spent time between Savannah and Bluffton, South Carolina as a youth, since both his parents are from Bluffton. He has a younger sister, India D. Brown. Like many, he said he started participating in sports at an early age. “I started playing football, baseball, soccer and basketball at the age of five,” he said. It also helped that his parents were former athletes. His father played multiple sports at Bluffton High and went on to play football at Morehouse College before a injury cut short his career as a sophomore. He received his undergraduate degree in accounting. His mother also attended Bluffton High where she played basketball. She attended Clark Atlanta where she graduated with a degree in

Business Education. Growing up Isiah says he played for the Patriots organization as well as Liberty City, the Bluejays and the Cardinals in local Pop Warner programs. Isiah attended Cathedral Day Catholic School (now known as Notre Dame Academy) and later went to Beach High School where he was a three-sport athlete (football, baseball and soccer). He lists Ulysses Hawthorne, Ronald Booker, Cordie Wright, Robert Lambert, Utaff Gordon, Fred Reynolds, Brian Simon, Rick Bond, Abro Williams, James German and Charlie Smith as some of his high school mentors. When asked about some of his memorable moments in a Bulldog uniform he said that setting the school record with a game-winning 45 yard field goal against Jenkins, making 23 tackles against Savannah High school as a junior and beating Camden County 30-0 for homecoming in 1994. He admits that he did not have college scouts beating down his door but he did draw interest from Savannah State, Fort Valley

SAVANNAH HERALD NEWSPAPER State and Virginia Union. He ended up attending SSU on a football scholarship. “Coach Irvin Clark came to see me at Beach High School by way of Joe Crosby.” He says the decision to stay at home was a easy one and he has no regrets. “I wanted to stay close to home and attending Savannah State University was the best thing that happened to me.” While attending SSU, Isiah continues to participate in athletics. (football, baseball and track). Among his highlights of attending the college by the sea, Isiah says was earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He also shared some of his athletic memories. “I made the travel team my freshman year in football by playing special teams. In baseball, I started at third base and played catcher.. I was fortunate enough to earn four SIAC Championships rings. During that span, we were the first SSU team to compete in the NCAA Division II championships. In the year 2000, we set the national record for consecutive victories. We finished the year 46 – 3.” Isiah earned a business management degree at Savannah State as well as a master of public administration degree. Afterwards he earned his PhD from Florida A&M in Educational Administration with a focus in Leadership. He wanted to go into the k-12 educational field like his mother but a conversation with former SSU president Carlton Brown inspired him to go the extra mile in higher education. “As a young black male coming from Savannah, I know how furthering my education beyond high school changed my life and gave me hope. I ultimately wanted to teach and be a principal at one of the high schools. I thought at one time in my life this would get me closer to coaching the sports I played in high school. After meeting Dr. Carlton Brown, my reality evolved and I now had aspirations of being a president of a college. Upon my first graduation from SSU, I asked Dr. Brown, what I had to do to have his job. He replied with that smile and said “Brown, you gotta get your union card”. Not understanding the cliché at the time, he simply meant, doctoral degree. This sparked my inspiration for going into the field of education. I had great teachers and mentors at Beach High, SSU and FAMU. All have which taught me how to be open minded and appreciative of diversity of thought and multiple perspectives, just thinking outside the box.” These days, Isiah is a visiting assistant professor of management in the school of business at the State University of New York Oswego, a position he has had since 2016. “President Deborah F. Stanley recently appointed me to serve the School of Business, as SUNY Oswego’s inaugural Diversity and Inclusion Fellow. I will be working closely with Dr.

Jerald Woolfolk, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management and interim chief diversity and inclusion officer, and Howard Gordon, executive assistant to the president as SUNY Oswego continues the implementation of its Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Plan. I will have the opportunity to further develop a deep understanding of the complexity and multiple dimensions of diversity, inclusion and equity, including, but not limited to age, class, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, nationality, race, religion, sexual identity, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status,” he adds. Prior to his time at SUNY Oswego, Isiah served in various positions at the University of Houston-Downtown (Director, Assurance of Learning and Assessment and adjunct instructor, college of business), Texas Southern University (Executive director, Urban Academic Village, adjunct instructor) Our Lady of the Lake University, (Houston- Campus Director, Weekend College Program) and Florida A&M University (Assistant Director, Teacher for a New Era; Title III: Program Coordinator, Teacher Education and Certification). He also served as an NCATE Assessment Analyst, Office Manager, and research assistant all in the college of education. Isiah started working with FAMU in 2004 upon his acceptance into the doctoral program. He also worked for Lutheran Services, Mr. Delites – Hot dog vending, UPS, Kroger, Kenny’s, Heiman and Son’s and the Garden City Leisure Service Bureau before leaving Savan-

Former SSU Band Director Dies

Former Savannah State band director Alzie Walker died over the weekend in North Carolina.Walker was the SSU band director from 2001-06. Walker, who was the band director at Norfolk State before coming to SSU, had to rebuild the band from scratch when he arrived. He had about 15 musicians to work with but grew the program to 115 in 2003. In 2004 and ‘05, the band participated in the

prestigious Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta. While at SSU, Walker also wrote the school a new fight song. Shannon McFadden, the current band alumni president, shared her thoughts on what Walker meant to her. McFadden described Walker as a people person whole could communicate well those who were influential to those who were in grade school. She added that what impressed her the most about Walker was his ability to relate well with first generation college students and his interactions with young students which led to him becoming a father figure to many who were being raised by single women. “He had this degree of confidence that the SSU marching band students brought into. He was bluntly truthful when it needed to be said. He just had a colorful way with words,” she went on to say.

On Sunday, October 28, 2017, Sanctuary of Praise Christian Assembly, Inc., with Bishop Jackie Gilbert-Grant and Pastor Martin Grant held the dedication to the new sanctuary, located at 5212 Silk Hope Road, Garden City, GA 31408 (off Ogeechee Rd.). The services were filled with an uplifting, celebratory spirit, thanking God for what He has done. The new “Safehouse” as guest messenger, Bishop Matthew Odum, coined it because that’s what a sanctuary is... “a place away from danger; a place of refuge.” The worship service presider, was none-otherthan the anointed Bishop Dorothy Tanksley who refused to “quench the spirit of praise.” Bishop Nathaniel Small raised a soul stirring prayer of dedication for the newly renovated building. Bishop Gilbert-Grant and Pastor Grant and the Sanctuary of Praise family are “building a rich heritage, celebrating the present and looking forward to a glorious future!”

I n t h e O l d Te s t a m e n t of the Bible, God wrote the commandments with his own finger upon two tables of stone and gave them to Moses to give to his people. However, God also proclaimed in the Old Testament that after those days, I will put my law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts and I will be their God and they shall be my people. After what days is God speaking of? God is speaking concerning the days after the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus, when Jesus becomes the sacrifice for our sins instead of animal sacrifices which is also called the New Testament. God’s covenant is perpetual, forever, God keeps his promises. God does not change neither has he changed his covenant. He still writes his commandments, but not on tables of stone but he writes his commandments which are his laws in our hearts as he said that he would do. Are God’ laws written on the table of your heart? [Exodus 31: 18, 34: 1, Jeremiah 31:31-33, Hebrews 8: 7-10, 10: 4-7]

In the New Testament, God confirms his covenant promise when we repent of our sins, accept Jesus as our Savior and receive the Holy Ghost. Paul reminds us of God’s promise saying, “The Holy Ghost who is a witness to us, for after that he (God) had said, this is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws in their hearts and in their minds will I write them, and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” Are God’s laws written on the table of your heart or does your mouth say yes, but your heart is far from him, as Jesus has stated. [Hebrews 10:1517, Matthew 7: 21-23, 15: 8-9, Jeremiah 17:9] What are God’s laws? Jesus summarizes or synthesizes them into two commandments saying, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment and the second is like unto it. Thou shall love thy neighbor as thy self.” However, when the commandments are analyzed

or broken down into details, we realize that there are many things that we must do to prove that we love God and people, and if we truly love God and people we will be obedient to all that God commands us to do. However today, mankind has chosen to make their own laws and break them as they choose. In the book of Daniel God says, “He (a body, which consist of more than one person) shall speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints, and think to change times and laws and they shall be given into his hand for a certain length of time.
