Sports Top 2017 Sports Stories from SSU

With 2017 recently coming to a close, this writer came up with what he thinks were the top five Savannah State sports stories. 1- In April, the SSU administration announced plans to move the institution’s athletic program from Division I to Division II, because of financial reasons. In early December, the administration held a press conference to say that SSU, who currently competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, had been accepted to re-join their former conference, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. 2- In February, the SSU cheer team won the Level 4 Division, Open 4 category at the CHEERSPORT Nationals in Atlanta. The win was the first time that a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) won a national CHEERSPORT event. The last time SSU competed at CHEERSPORT was in 2013 where they finished in eighth place in the College Level 4. 3- In February, LaRon James set a school record in track as he won the men’s long jump competition at the MEAC Indoor championships with a leap of 24 feet, 5.5 inches. In May, the Gainesville, Florida native set a school record in winning the long jump at the MEAC outdoor championships, with a leap of 24-8.5. 4- In October, the SSU football team defeated Norfolk State 27-9, to spoil the Spartans Homecoming. It was the Tigers first road win since 2011, a span of 40 games. It was Savannah State’s first win of the season and snapped a ten game losing streak. 5- In February, Troyce Manassa ended his collegiate career by scoring a career-high 42 points to lead the Tigers to a 95-88 win over visiting South Carolina State. In the game, Manassa made 12 of 23 shots from the field, made six 3-pointers, hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts and grabbed ten rebounds.

By Walter Moore

McClanahan averages 13.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game while Alante Feener adds 10.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. The Lady Tigers, who have only played one regular season home game thus far, have a 2-8 record with wins over LaGrange and Georgia Southern. SSU was to play at Jacksonville on Dec. 31 before hosting Kennesaw State in another non-conference tilt on Jan. 3. With a roster of 11 newcomers, Savannah State is averaging 50 points a game but giving up 82. Chicago State transfer Kaylee Allen has been a bright spot, averaging 12.4 points and 4.1 rebounds a game while junior Donasja Scott chips in 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per outing. Six-foot-three freshman Alexxus Sowell averages 7.9 rebounds per game.

Louimeus is SSU Equip. Manager

Alormser Louimeus has been hired as the Savannah State athletic equipment manager. He replaces Brian Eason, who took a job with the University of Connecticut athletic department. Louimeus comes to SSU from New Century International in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he served as the assistant athletic director and the head coach in football, wrestling and baseball. He also taught health and physical education. In his two seasons at NCI, Louimeus compiled a 12-3 record in football and 10-4 record in baseball. The football team was runner-up in the district in both seasons and baseball won the district in both seasons. He was named Coach of the Year in 2015-16. Prior to his tenure at NCI, Louimeus was the head coach in football and track and field at Westover Middle School from Aug. 2013 until July 2015. He also taught health and physical education. Letter To The Editor Let’s Remember Dr. King By Keeping Wealth In Our Community!

Dear Editor, The Christmas Holidays have drained our checking and saving accounts. Many of our people went to borrow money from white owned loan and pay day companies just to have a Merry White Christmas! The only people who was merry was the white man because we made him wealthy once again. The day after the most spiritual day of the year, the Black family once again would find themselves still living below the poverty line, children still going to prison at an alarming rate, and the District Attorney is still using race to give our kids the death penalty and to try them as adults. All these atrocities were designed by the same people we spent our billions of dollars with. They divided up those billions of dollars and gave most of it to private prisons, the local DA and Police Department and the rest they spent to send their white kids to white law school so they could be appointed to the Supreme Court. All those criminal entities would deny your Black husband and children justice and equality for generation to generation. All paid for by your loyal financial support of Christmas and all other holidays created by the white man! However, we can change this insane narrative over night if we are

willing to make a change. Dr. King was more than one sided, of course he spoke about racism and injustice imposed upon us by government; however, he spoke about keeping a slice of bread in the Black community. In laymen’s term he meant Black people must support Black people! That is not a hard concept but when we ask Black people to support Black businesses, they act as if someone told them to commit suicide. But when we run and support whites, Chinese, Asians, Koreans, Jews who all treat us like underclass citizens now that’s suicide, double homicide, and genocide!! To keep a slice a bread in the community is a job for the MLK Committee because they have a lot of power. They are going under the banner of a great and mighty man who fought and died for equality, freedom and economic power for Black people! The MLK Parade would begin in two week and there would be well over two hundred entries in the parade. All of those cars, trucks and motorbikes are going to need gas to drive in the parade. The MLK Committee have the golden opportunity to strongly encourage the people who are in the parade to purchase their gas from Sheppard’s or

SAVANNAH HERALD NEWSPAPER Jackson Brothers. They could offer the people a 10% off their entry fee! We must do something because those are the only Black gas stations we have left! Maybe their gas might be more than the white man but the more customers they get for the wee before the parade, the lower their prices would be. Furthermore, the more we support Black businesses, they would be able to strongly invest in the Black community. Just imagine cars and trucks all lined up outside two Black independent Black owned businesses. This would be the beginning of using the Kwanzaa Principle of collective work in the community. Moreover, this would be the beginning of our wealth building that all other races have gained off of our hard earned dollars. The white man who we buy our gas from would go stir crazy when we are absent from his business on the week before the parade. Do you know all races of people laugh at how stupid we are for celebrating a man who died for our freedom but we are still a financial slave to the same people who killed Dr. King. It’s the The MLK Committee duty to encourage all their participants, Black and white, to purchase their gas from Jackson Brothers or Josey Sheppard’s. If the MLK Committee continues to past up the opportunity to promote wealth in the Black community then having a parade for him is a dishonor and not an hon-

or. Most importantly, please stop excluding low income Blacks from those expensive breakfasts. Dr. King would have never approve of such insensitive behavior. The breakfast and all events that bears Dr. Kings name should be held at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Museum! The ultimate present for Dr. King is for the MLK Committee and Black people to fight against the DA for using unjust laws against his people such as the RICO ACT & Trying Juveniles as adults. Let’s honor him by supporting Black businesses especially around his birthday! Lets respect and hon-

or him by stop pimping his name out and ignoring his real purpose just to include white people because they donated money for the parade. In addition, lets honor and respect him by loving us first and stop saying we must love everybody when everybody don’t love us!! Last but not least, we are free and think for ourselves, let the parade start back at its original originthe EOA. By the time the parade get to the heart of the Black community which is on MLK, the people in the parade are tired and worn out and the majority of the Black people get

the short end of the stick. I pray that decision was not made to satisfy white supporters! Now that would be a disgrace to Dr. King and the Black people in Savannah. Just thinking, the white media moved off of MLK to Broughton the same time the MLK parade route changed!! Was that white flight and the elite Black folks followed? In the word of Dr. King who died for our freedom: If we take that hump out of our back then the white man can’t ride us! MARILYN JACKSON

What will be will be. Or not.

Each year about this time Americans make promises they know they will not keep. It's called making a resolution for the New Year and the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] has collected a few such commitments that people have made for 2018. One brave soul put his in writing on social media promising to "work with neglected children-my own." Another swore he would not "ring the stewardess button on airplanes just to get her phone number." And, one faithful employee said "I will not bore my boss with the same excuse for taking leaves. I will think of some more excuses." ###

Doubtful?

It's the 21st Century and many of us have given up on the practice of making what we think are futile resolutions, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. But, perhaps we should heed the words of philosopher Alex Epstein: "It is a sad irony that those who write off New Year's resolutions because so many fail reinforces the passive approach to life that causes so many resolutions-and so many other dreams-to fail. The solution to failed New Year's resolutions is not to abandon the practice, but to supplement it with a broader resolution-a commitment to a goal-directed life." ###

Where did it all begin?

Whose bright idea was it to ring in the New Year with a lot of noise and revelry? You can blame it on the Babylonians, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Some 4,000 they started the tradition with an eleven-day celebration as a way of getting in good with their gods.
