Savannah State Coach Steve Wilks

On Monday, the Cardinals named Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as their head coach. Wilks replaces Bruce Arians, who retired on Jan. 1. Wilks, 48, spent last season as defensive coordinator of the Panthers after five seasons as the team’s secondary coach. He’s been an NFL assistant for 12 years. Wilks played defensive back at Appalachian State, attended the Seattle Seahawks training camp and played for the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League. He worked his way up through the college assistant coaching ranks with stops at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, Savannah State, Illinois State, Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Bowling Green, Notre Dame and Washington, including a one-year stint as head coach at Savannah State in 1999. Wilks’ first NFL job was as defensive backs coach of the Chicago Bears. He held a similar job with the San Diego Chargers for three seasons before joining the Panthers staff. Wilks is expected to hire Panthers Linebackers coach Al Holcomb as his defensive coordinator. Wilks and Holcomb worked together in Carolina for five years and are poised to continue their partnership in Arizona. Holcomb has coached in the league as a position coach since 2009 but this would be his first stint as a coordinator. The Cardinals will likely transition to a 4-3 base, which is the same scheme Wilks and Holcomb used in Carolina. Wilks also interviewed with the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans before his hiring as the Arizona Cardinals Head Coach.

ladies gained valuable information that will help them become financially successful in the future. During the second session, Lahoma Patton, owner of United EMS, LLC, and her team conducted hands-only CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, as well as stop bleeding training workshops. “I feel that it is very important to teach bystanders CPR and basic first aid because this is one of those areas where, without the public’s help, patients don’t have chances of survival,” said Patton. Students indicated that they had been looking forward to Saturday’s session for quite some time. “It’s something that you don’t think you need until it’s in the moment,” said Brianna Leckie, member of Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy. “You realize that it’s a tool and a skill that you can have for the rest of your life and it can be beneficial to others in your community and in your life without

even realizing it.” Fifty students are enrolled in the 2017-2018 Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy. Since June, students from Chatham, Liberty, Bryan and Effingham Counties have taken part in several interactive workshops that teach them the skills they need to become successful in their personal and professional lives including: building self-esteem; how to get

their careers started, financial management, how to start their own businesses, etc. The academy is open to rising tenth and eleventh grade young ladies in all public and private schools. Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club Alumni & Friends 15th Annual Meritorious Service Award Luncheon

I was honored by the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia (GSHG) as one of their “Women of Distinction” in 2010. And, I am greatly appreciative for that honor, but as a participant in the public discussion, “Renaming the Talmadge Bridge”, I am very disappointed with the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, as they recently seem to be going against everything they’ve stood for over the years. The Girl Scout organization has done many wonderful things for girls and young women, teaching them values, integrity, and character. But, as I watch them make a back-door attempt to slide the name of Juliette Gordon Low into the mix after so many people have done all of the hard work to get the attention of the state legislators and local officials, it saddens me. Where was the GSHG when Talmadge’s name was first put on the new bridge? Why didn’t they mount their campaign and make their best pitch then to put Juliette Gordon Low’s name on the bridge? Now, they feel that it’s okay to “ride in on the skirt tail of someone else’s effort, I beg to differ! Hiring a lobbyist to go to Atlanta, making You Tube presentations, and whatever other means possible, and using sweet-little girls as puppets to undermine and undercut what the Savannah City Council has already done. The City Council listened to the pleas of the people and sent a resolution to the State Capitol months ago. GSHG, after the fact, came to the City Council workshop to inform the Council of what they were doing. No African-American citizen is pleased to see Talmadge’s name on the bridge, nor should they be pleased to see his name replaced with Juliette Gordon Low’s name. Keep in mind, wealthy people of Gordon Low’s time owned slaves, probably including her family. If not, they condoned and supported slavery, because I’ve never seen where the Gordon’s or the Low’s were abolitionists. Years from now, we should not want anyone to have an issue3 with what name is on the bridge, as we are doing today. Name the bridge for what it is. Name the bridge for what it does. City Council submitted the name “The Savannah Bridge”. If I am not mistaken, “The Savannah River Bridge” actually flows better. Let’s not allow the same mistake again, name the bridge something that will not be controversial now, or in the future. Juliette Gordon Low’s name is a household word in Savannah, Georgia. The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace at 10 E. Oglethorpe Avenue is a National Historic Landmark. The Andrew Low House at 329 Abercorn Street is on the National Register of Historic Places, The Girl Scout First Headquarters at 330 Drayton Street is a national historic site, and Juliette Gordon Low Elementary School is named for her. What more should we do? The tactics being used by GSHG to try to sway people’s opinion are just as “ugly” as some of the things the Talmadge Family have tried over the years. 1. Moving the GSHG Headquarters to Savannah on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd will NOT change my mind. 2. Bringing the GSHG national convention to Savannah will NOT change my mind. 3. Bribing City Council members with Chocolate Chip Cookies will NOT change my mind. 4. Savannah City Council members having or having had daughters as members of the Girl Scouts will NOT change my mind. 5. Ten thousand (10,000) signatures on a petition (many of the signatures do not belong to residents of Savannah-Chatham County) should have no bearing on something affecting our quality of life every day. City Council and State Legislators remember: Little girls don’t vote, but We Do!

Gospel Truth ...from 2B

in ignorance because no one knows the day or the hour that Jesus will return and that all things do not continue as they were from the beginning of the creation; for the world that then was, being overflowed with water by the word of God, perished. But, the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [Matt. 24: 36 and 44, 13: 40-43, I Thess. 5: 1-5, II Peter 3: 4-9, Rev.14: 14-19] However, yes it is true that people do continue in sin even after God destroyed the world with a flood during Noah’s life time. So, God raised up a prophet named Moses to deliver his people out of bondage and sin. Never-the- less, the people were still disobedient under Moses’ leadership. Therefore, God himself spoke to Moses saying, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?” God has given the people his fourth commandment not to work on the Sabbath Day to be a sign between him and his people. But, Moses did not rebuke the people for picking up manna (bread) on the seventh day as God had commanded. Still today, people refuse to keep God’s commandments and most Christians disregard the Sabbath Day. [Ex. 12: 49, 16: 28-29, 31: 13-18, Ezek. 20:12, 22: 25-26, Heb. 4: 4-8]

Yes, people today are still serving idol gods such as Buddha, Muhammad, Money, houses land, cars etc. Even in the days of Elijah the prophet, he asked this question to the worshippers of Baal, “How long halt you between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him, but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people answered him not a word. They didn’t answer because they feared the man of God, and they knew that they were going to continue to serve Baal. Just as many people to day go to church, but they continue to satisfy their flesh in immoral sex, partying, drinking, smoking, lying, stealing, killing, jealousy and much more! However, Elijah proved the true and living God. [I Kings 18: 21- 39] When John was marooned on the Isle of Patmos, he looked under the altar in a vision and saw the souls of them which were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. “And they cried with a loud voice saying how long O Lord, holy and true, do you not judge and avenge our blood on them that that dwell on the earth?” Yes, God will avenge the wicked, for he has said, “Vengeance belongs to me, and I will recompense!” It is a fearful thing to full into the hands of the living God! [Rev. 6:10, Heb. 10: 26-31] The question God is asking you today is, “How long will you continue in your own self righteous way? I admonish you today to repent and turn to God and serve him with your whole heart! [Prov.16: 25, Matt. 22: 37-38, St. John 14:6]

A Salty World Peppered (Salt and Pepper) for Enjoyment Salt takes first place, but look out for pepper is soon to follow. During my adult life time I’ve witnessed how the world is peppered with lots of salt thrown in. Have you? What would we do without salt and pepper? Most of the time we use these tasters for more enjoyment in our foods and mostly just for taste. Yes, salt and pepper go so good together, who would want to part from either? Salt is white and pepper is adorably black while when you feel like shaking something start at the
