Charles Gordon participate in two sports while attending Tompkins High School. Those sports were respectively baseball and football. In baseball he played center field and

was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team. In football he dressed our for the varsity while in 8th grade at Scott Middle School. Coach Russell told Coach Joe Turner about his ability to throw the football which would help bolster the run game that Tompkins was always known for in its history. Charles became the back up quarterback (QB) by his sophomore season and in his junior year. He became the full time starter which in high school is really exceptional for QB’s. He went on to guide the team

Savannah State University (SSU) has been awarded approximately $3.7 million in federal grant funding for its TRiO Upward Bound (UB) program. UB will continue to help Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) students excel as it provides outreach services to transition students from high school to college graduation through May 2024. This program will continue to focus on increas-

ing higher education pursuits in the target schools of Beach High School, Groves High School, Jenkins High School, Johnson High School and School of Liberal Arts at Savannah High School. The funding is provided under the U.S. Department of Education’s Upward Bound Program, one of eight federal TRiO programs offering outreach and student services programs for individuals from dis-

advantaged backgrounds, including low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities, to progress through the academic pipeline to post baccalaureate programs. TRiO programs are available for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background, or economic circumstance. They are funded under the Title IV Higher Education Act of 1965.

to an undefeated regular season in the 67-68 school year, becoming Regional Champions that year, earning Coach Joe Turner the Coach of the Year honors. It is said that Tompkins has not had any other undefeated season in history. So that sets Charles’ career at Tompkins in a special place in the school’s history. He played the first championship game between an all black high school and all white high school in Columbus, GA (1967). Under Charles’ leadership the team’s record was 17 wins vs. 4 losses; three as a junior and one as senior. Charles Johnson played in the position of Quarterback. He was one of the best players for the Woodville Wolverines. Charles threw on of the longest passes in Wolverine history for a touchdown. On defense he averaged about ten tackles per game. He was recruited by Fort Valley State College, Claflin College and Savannah State College. Charles

stayed home and played for Savannah State College (SSC) and became the first string quarterback. Eddie Fennell played offensive end for the Wolverines. He was included in the All City, All Region and Class AA State Championship with 20-13 over Turner High (Atlanta). Willie Jesse “Farmer Brown” Middleton is the football legend of the Woodville Wolverines era. He played in more games, made more unassisted tackles, blocked more punts and more quarterback sacks than any other Savannah players. He sent more opponents and teammates in games and scrimmages to Charity Hospital, probably in the history of football to include Beach High Hall of Famers number 55 William Burke, Baldy Kearse and Bladdy Brown. “Farmer Brown” should have been included in the Woodville Wolverine Hall of Fame previously because he was pro-material. “Farmer” was captain of the Woodville Wolverines team for four years. Ernestine J. Jones is a 1952 graduate of Woodville High School. She was a pioneer having been on the first competitive women’s basketball team at Woodville playing as a forward from 1949 to 1952. Even though the team did not have the luxuries of modern teams, they survived because of their love for the school. She was coached by Mary Simmons but, in actuality, Walter “49” Simmons coached the team. Even though records were not kept, Mrs. Jones averaged about fifteen points and about 10 rebounds at the

time. The team played hard and had many problems because of traveling experience. They played such teams as Darien, Ludowici and Risley High School. Mrs. Jones is affiliated with many organizations in Savannah and has received many awards. She attended Savannah State College (University), Armstrong Sate College (University), the University of South Carolina and the Citadel. She is a retired after having served the Beaufort County School System for 31 years. McLeonard “Mac” Baul was an outstanding sports trainer from 1958 through 1960. A protege of Freddie Dorsey, McLeonard learned early on how important it was to be a good trainer for his team. As a trainer, Mac was one who provided first aid treatment to injured players until it was determined if further medical treatment was required. When it was necessary for a player to be sent to a medical facility, he was always willing to accompany the player. In addition, as a trainer, Mac faithfully executed his responsibilities for properly maintaining the team’s uniforms and equipment. He helped to make sure that uniforms were laundered and equipment ready for each practice session and each game. Whenever the team was required to travel, it was his responsibility to work with the other trainers to assure that uniforms, equipment, first aid kits and all other travel items were on the bus.

Armstrong Lecturer Maxine Bryant to Speak at Women and Girls in Georgia Conference

Armstrong State University Lecturer of Criminal Justice Maxine Bryant, Ph.D., has been selected to speak at the 2017 Women and Girls in Georgia Conference on Justice and Resistance in Athens, Ga. on Nov. 11. The conference will

focus on the results of female-based research studies and highlight grassroots efforts to empower women against violence, academic underrepresentation, the justice system and other societal challenges. Bryant will speak as a panelist on the topic, “I Am Visible: I Hurt,” which focuses on the post combat-like symptoms women with childhood trauma of abuse, poverty or other frightening experiences demonstrate and the subsequent illegal actions they engage in. “Women are the fastest growing population behind bars,” says Bryant. “Through this conference, I hope to network, add to the knowledge base of my peers and learn ways to

prevent more women from being imprisoned.” Armstrong Gender and Women’s Studies Program graduate Irena Bolden will also present “Stop the Violence Against Women and Girls---Can We Be Better?” in the Resisting Violence and Silence category. Since 2007, the Women and Girls in Georgia Conference, in conjunction with the University of Georgia’s Institute for Women’s Studies, has joined together academics, activists and community leaders for discussions and workshops on topics that affect women, including violence, health and well-being, politics, the economic crisis, the arts and sustainability.

The former Mather School in Beaufort, SC celebrates its 150th founding Anniversary. The Mather School National Alumni Association (MSNAA) will hold its 40th Annual Reunion Meeting and celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Founding of Mather School on July 28-30, 2017 at the Columbia Marriott Hotel. The Mather School National Alumni Association supports scholarships for students at Benedict College, where the largest dormitory is Mather Hall. The Mather reunion will include a scholarship gala on Saturday, July 29 at the Columbia Marriott. The banquet speaker is Dr. Michelle Logan-Owens, COO for the Palmetto Health - Toomey Medical System, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees for the South Carolina Hospital Association, a Liberty Fellow (2018) and an Honorary Commander to Shaw Air Force Base, among many other distinctions. Other invited speakers include Columbia May-

or Steven Benjamin and Richland County Council Chair Mrs. Joyce Dickerson. The Mather School was named for its founder, Mrs. Rachael Crane Mather of Boston, who created the School in 1867 to help provide educational opportunities for the children of former slaves. In 1882, the Women’s American Baptist Home Missionary Society assumed support for the institution, operating it as a normal school for girls. Mather School developed as an accredited high school and junior college, which included male and female students, with a boarding component for female students who came from across the nation. For more than 100 years, Mather School served Black families from the Lowcountry in South Carolina and across the nation before closing in 1968. The facilities were sold to the SC Department of Education, and the proceeds were used to fund the Mather dormitory as well as student scholarships at Benedict College. In addi-

tion to the Annual MSNAA Reunion, a Mather Bell ringing commemoration is held annually at the original site in Beaufort, SC, where the historic Mather School Bell is preserved at the Technical College of the Lowcountry. The Mather Library is now a center for education, history and culture, shared with the Beaufort Arts Council. The public is invited to support the MSNAA scholarship fund-raising activities by sponsoring ads, by purchasing tickets to the Reunion Gala or by making tax-deductible donations to the Mather School National Alumni Association, at the Mather School NAA Office, Benedict College, 1600 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29204. For more information, please contact Valerie Goodson (goodsonv@ benedict.edu or 803-7054568) at Benedict College, Office of Alumni Relations.
