Summer Bonanza’s 6th event on their 2017 activity calendar was hosted by the Abdallah Family at their farm in Metter, Georgia. The children, their parents, and the volunteers enjoyed a fun-filled day learning about the value of Georgia’s agriculture as the number one industry in this state. Mr. Ziad Abdallah (of US Foods) and his family gave the group an up close and personal tour allowing them to see the garden of fruits and vegetables, and to feed the goats, sheep, and horses. Maharah Pilcher, age 10, said, “it felt funny letting the sheep lick the food pellets out of my hand. I was scared at first but then it was fun so I fed the horses too!” Many of the children experienced for the first time riding a horse, fishing,

and taking a tracker-pulled hay-ride. For lunch, Mrs. Abdallah prepared a delicious barbecue cookout in observance of Independence Day, with a fresh fruit salad for dessert! Retired County Commissioner Dr. Priscilla Thomas and Summer Bonanza, a Chatham County Youth Initiative, would like to especially thank the Abdallah Family for their hospitality and continued support of the mentoring program. Appreciation is also extended to Chatham County School Board, Parks and Recreation, the Sheriff’s Office, and Budget Food Store (Bay Street Location) for assisting in this event. Over 100 participants from Chatham County, ages 7-14, are enrolled in the program this year.

Former SSU Football Star Needs Kidney

Damon Johnson

Former Savannah State football player Damon Johnson is in need of a kidney. The Atlanta native has been on the kidney transplant list for about two years. He says he first learned of his kidney issues 13 years ago. “I first discovered I had kidney issues in 2004, prior to my daughter (Sydney) being born. It was discovered that I had kidney cancer and I had the cancerous tumor removed from my left kidney.” Before this, Johnson, who turned 50 in late June, was a relatively healthy man. After graduating from Therrell High School, he attended Western Kentucky on a football scholarship. He later transferred to Savannah State where he finished up his playing career. In 1988, he made the all conference team and led the Tigers in tackles (107) and sacks (9). His 107 tackles was a single season record at the time but it has since been broken. During his playing days on the defensive line, Johnson was listed at 6-foot-5 and nearly 300-pounds. He earned a business degree from SSU in 1991 and has been a valuable employee to many companies ranging from Bank of America, Daimler Chrysler, Fulton County and SSU. For the past ten years he has been a Public Outreach Specialist with DeKalb County. Because of his illness, Johnson has to go to dialysis three times a week. He says that his kidneys are in the renal failure stage but that has not slow him down. “I work full time and have not missed a day if work unless I was hospitalized for specific analysis or issues,” he adds. Many people think you need money to be on the kidney transplant list but Johnson says that is not true. “There is no money required to be on the list. If you don’t have a living donor there is a 6-8 year waiting period. Thus dialysis is needed to keep me alive.” While at Savannah State, Johnson became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is also an accomplished poetry writer who has published several books. His poems are about love, life, and all of the passion in between. He credits his love of words and writing to the first love

of his life, his mother, Mary Jo Johnson. In spite of his trials and tribulations, Johnson says that his family has been his rock. “My support system consists of mainly my family. I’m a very private person and tend to be a little nonchalant about the severity of my illness. Being a strong person all my life, this illness has been very humbling and a bit scary. Yet, God has been good. I know that all of my friends, coaches and fraternity brothers are praying for me. I have just recently decided to actively seek a living donor and have been getting some positive responses. Hopefully a kidney is in my immediate future.” If you would like more information or are interested in being a donor you can contact Johnson’s his living donor coordinator Barbara O’Neal, RN at 404605-4128.

BERKSTEINER...

Since obtaining this prestigious title she has continued to use her voice to bring awareness to the math and sciences, working diligently to expose underrepresented students to different areas of the STEM fields. Ambria’s platform Operation: Changing the World One STEM at a Time will provide mentoring to young African-American girls who are interested in pursuing STEM related careers. She hopes to captivate their attention by incorporating STEM concepts with Visual Arts Concepts, making an outwardly boring subject to some students enjoyable through imagination and creativity. African American women pursue engineering degrees three times less often than their male counterparts. Ambria shines a spotlight on the valuable experiences and knowledge that African American women bring to STEM. Her goal is to show young ladies that engineering is vast and diverse, motivating them to change the world one STEM at at time. Miss Berksteiner will have the honor of representing Savannah in the 2017 Miss Black Georgia USA Scholarship Pageant in the Albany area in late September. She will not only be competing for the coveted title but for an academic

scholarship to help continue her educational endeavors. For appearances, donations and sponsorships contact Ambria Berksteiner at missblacksavannahusa@ gmail.com or go to her public Facebook page @ missblacksavannahusa.

would help bolster the run game that Tompkins was always known for in its history. Charles became the back up quarterback (QB) by his sophomore season and in his junior year. He became the full time starter which in high school is really exceptional for QB’s. He went on to guide the team to an undefeated regular season in the 67-68 school year, becoming Regional Champions that year, earning Coach Joe Turner the Coach of the Year honors. It is said that Tompkins has not had any other undefeated season in history. So that sets Charles’ career at Tompkins in a special place in the school’s history. He played the first championship game between an all black high school and all white high school in Columbus, GA (1967). Under Charles’ leadership the team’s record was 17 wins vs. 4 losses; three as a junior and one as senior. Charles Johnson played in the position of Quarterback. He was one of the best players for the Woodville Wolverines. Charles threw on of the longest passes in Wolverine history for a touchdown. On defense he averaged about ten tackles per game. He was recruited by Fort Valley State College, Claflin College and Savannah State College. Charles stayed home and played for Savannah State College (SSC) and became the first string quarterback. Eddie Fennell played offensive end for the Wolverines. He was included in the All City, All Region and Class AA State Championship with 20-13 over Turner

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 2017-3A High (Atlanta). Willie Jesse “Farmer Brown” Middleton is the football legend of the Woodville Wolverines era. He played in more games, made more unassisted tackles, blocked more punts and more quarterback sacks than any other Savannah players. He sent more opponents and teammates in games and scrimmages to Charity Hospital, probably in the history of football to include Beach High Hall of Famers number 55 William Burke, Baldy Kearse and Bladdy Brown. “Farmer Brown” should have been included in the Woodville Wolverine Hall of Fame previously because he was pro-material. “Farmer” was captain of the Woodville Wolverines team for four years. Ernestine J. Jones is a graduate of Woodville High School. She is a retired English and Literature teacher serving the Beaufort County School System. Mrs. Jones has been affiliated with many organizations in Savannah and received many awards. She attended Savannah State College,

Armstrong State College, the University of South Carolina and The Citadel. McLeonard “Mac” Baul was an outstanding sports trainer from 1958 through 1960. A protege of Freddie Dorsey, McLeonard learned early on how important it was to be a good trainer for his team. As a trainer, Mac was one who provided first aid treatment to injured players until it was determined if further medical treatment was required. When it was necessary for a player to be sent to a medical facility, he was always willing to accompany the player. In addition, as a trainer, Mac faithfully executed his responsibilities for properly maintaining the team’s uniforms and equipment. He helped to make sure that uniforms were laundered and equipment ready for each practice session and each game. Whenever the team was required to travel, it was his responsibility to work with the other trainers to assure that uniforms, equipment, first aid kits and all other travel items were on the bus.

Greenbriar Children’s Center Recognized at Urban Christian Academy’s Honors Night

The Urban Christian Academy gave tribute to the descendants of Adeline Graham, Greenbriar Children’s Center staff, and Gamma Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. during its Urban Honors Night celebration last month at The Stage on Bay in downtown Savannah. Elder and Pastor Charles Gordon and the Honors Committee of Urban Christian Academy voted unanimously to honor the work of Greenbriar Children’s Center at this event. In attendance were Greenbriar staff and board leaders, former residents of the center, the nonprofit organization’s very first resident and the descendants of the Greenbriar’s founder, Adaline Graham. Like many of its residents and beneficiaries, Greenbriar has humble be-

ginnings. Graham, a wellknown Savannah philanthropist, died and left property and funds to whomever might start a movement to establish an orphanage for African-American children. So, as a community service project in 1943, five young African-American women of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority decided to utilize the funds and established a children’s center as Graham had specified in his will. The sorority solicited the assistance of the Rev. Ralph Mark Gilbert, then pastor of First African Baptist Church, as it was also stipulated in the will that the black Protestant churches be involved in establishing and providing ongoing support of the orphanage. In 1944, the group purchased a tract of land on West 50th Street, where they planned to build the

facility. On June 8, 1944, using an additional $4,500 donated by the Graham estate, Greenbriar Children’s Center was founded. It opened on July 15, 1949 with a cottage-style building that accommodated 20 children and a private apartment for a resident housemother. In May 1954, the 15-acre tract on which Greenbriar now stands on Hopkins Street was purchased for $17,000. The center began accepting children of all races in 1964. “It was a wonderful experience to have our staff honored alongside the descendants and supporters of those who first envisioned Greenbriar Children’s Center and the organization that brought that vision to fruition,” Greenbriar Executive Director Gena Taylor said. “We are grateful for the recognition. Without Adaline Graham and her

family, we wouldn’t be here today. And without the support of places like Urban Christian Academy and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, we wouldn’t be able to continue our mission.” The mission of Greenbriar Children’s Center is to promote the healthy development of children and the strengthening of families by providing services that include an emergency shelter, runaway/homeless, residential care, independent living, family preservation, early childhood education & care, as well as Project Safe Place.
