Over the years, she has missed her so. To commemorate her 100th Birthday, now Lizzie M. Dukes Guess, at the age of 75, decided to host a birthday party for her mom. A Love Letter to Mama for Your Centennial Birthday Celebration By Lizzie M. Dukes Guess June 10, 2017

Dear Mama, Just a few lines in addition to the many letters that I wrote to you over the years. I have missed you tremendously. You would not know how it feels to lose a mother because you transitioned at the age of forty while she was still living. I do not remember Grandma Mamie talking since you passed away. She passed away a year later. I remember you as though it was yesterday. I knew that you were an angel and was passing on to me those things that you enjoyed when you were a kid. You took me to get my hair done at Ms. Saxby’s beauty salon since the age of five. You wanted me to strive to be educated. You took me shopping and bought lovely clothes. You taught me etiquette and took me to Silver Tea Parties at the Mothers Board Meeting. You sent me to piano lessons and I had to be a lady at all times. You made sure that I took part in Sunday School lessons, the Church Usher Board, Cradle Rollers Choir, Children’s Choir and finally the Senior Choir at Townsley Chapel AME Church. I took all of those things for granted until May 26, 1957 – the day you transitioned. Unfortunately, a person gets only one mother. A good mother is so hard to come by and replace, no matter how others may try. I thank you for doing all that you did while you had the chance. Thanks for your love, teaching and role modeling during your lifetime. P.S. Your homemade cupcakes were the best and so was Daddy’s home churned ice cream. You two made them for each of my birthdays including my last when I turned 15 in February of the year 1957. I love you. I have missed you forever. But I have your darling baby girl, Toni, my youngest sister who looks just like you and was 5 years old when you passed away. I had your daughter Ella Odessa who was my oldest sister. Also, I have my three most beautiful daughters, a fine group of nieces, granddaughters, great granddaughters and a host of nieces that are too many to count. You have daughter-in-laws who are so great. They met Daddy’s new wife, Ms. Carrie, whom they loved so dearly. However, they missed the extreme treasure of meeting you. I LOVE YOU DEAR MOTHER! Happy Birthday to you. May you SIP (sleep in peace) until I see you again. Happy Birthday Daddy. SIP Poppa Dukes. I pray that your rest is not disturbed. And to Jesse, Nat, Bob, Moses and Arthur, keep singing and dancing my loves. I’m closing my letter, but never MY LOVE, Lizzie Mae A native of Savannah, Georgia, Lizzie M. Dukes Guess resides in Atlanta. Although her mother hosted many parties for she and her siblings, Lizzie doesn’t remember her mother ever having a birthday party of her own. She wanted to give her one. In Savannah, Georgia, on June 10, 2017, she hosted a 100th Birthday Celebration in her mother’s honor in the Carey Hilliard’s Restaurant Banquet Room. Family and friends came out to celebrate the joyous occasion. AUTHOR BIO: Lizzie M. Dukes Guess was raised in Savannah, Georgia. She now resides in Atlanta, Georgia. She is her family’s historian. She enjoys traveling, writing, computer games, sewing, cooking, reading and spending time with her five children, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

No Postseason For SSU Tigers Football & Men’s Basketball

The NCAA has banned Savannah State for postseason eligibility during the 201718 school year in football and men’s basketball with level two penalties while the baseball team received a level one penalty, due to low Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The latest multi-rate scores released by the NCAA were from a fouryear period that ended in the 2015-16 academic year. Football’s score was 896 which was a improvement from last year’s score of 866, a jump of 30 points. Men’s basketball posted their lowest score ever of 880, It was a 18-point fall from last year’s report of 892. Baseball fell eight points from 927 to this year’s score of 919. Football muti-rate scores have been on the rise as of late. The Tigers had a score of 836 during the 2004-05 period but dipped to a low of 820 the next year. SSU’s scores rose to a program high of 921 during the 2010-11 academic year but fell to 876 the following year. Since then the scores have been on the upswing each of the past four years. While football and men’s basketball received post-season bans, like last year, the baseball program will have their practice times reduced. Level One penalties focus on practice restrictions, which provide additional time for teams to focus on academics. Teams facing this penalty lose four hours and one day of practice time per week in season, which is intended to be replaced with academic activities. Level Two penalties include the Level One penalty and a reduction of four hours of practice time out of season, which is intended to be replaced with academic activities. At Level Two, the team’s nonchampionship season, or spring football, is eliminated. Teams without nonchampionship seasons face a reduced number of contests. The men’s track program increased its score but the men’s cross country and golf teams did not. Men’s track improved their score from 932 to 960 while cross country fell from 934 to 920. Men’s golf had the biggest decline of any of SSU’s athletic teams, falling from 967 to 919. Of the seven women’s teams, three improved their scores. Tuskegee Reschedules 2017 Homecoming

Tuskegee University and the Tuskegee University Athletic Department announce that the university’s 2017 homecoming game has been rescheduled from November 4 to the Golden Tigers’ matchup with the Central State Marauders on October 28. The change in the date for homecoming will not affect the 1 p.m. scheduled kickoff time on Oct. 28 Head Football Coach Willie Slater explained the change results primarily from a lengthy road schedule, which includes five off-campus games during the weekends preceding homecoming weekend. “By late October, our players and coaches will be looking forward to returning to Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium and the full support of the Tuskegee fan base,” said Slater. “Aligning homecoming with our game against Central State will give our student-athletes an exciting week to return to after five weeks on the road,” he continued. “In addition, it will help ensure our program offers a quality experience for our loyal and faithful fans, and that our team puts on a great showing. That momentum promises to carry us through the remainder of the season.” The change in the date for homecoming does offer some additional economic benefits by placing a greater focus on the Central State game, while at the same time reducing the strain the logistics of hosting a widely popular, in-state rivalry game against Miles College coupled with all the festivities that are associated with homecoming. The university and the athletic department currently are finalizing several homecoming-related events and will publish a complete schedule in the coming weeks. Additionally, season tickets will go Cornelia Playing on sale Wednesday, July 5. in Arena League Please visit goldentiger Former Savannah State sports.com for the 2017 football player Vaughn Cor- football schedule.

The Gospel Truth With Gwendolyn Greene Mt. Zion and Mount Of Olives

What is so significant about these two Mountains in Jerusalem? Let’s discuss Mt. Zion first. When the disciple John was in isolation on the Isle of Patmos, he was in the Spirit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith and temperance because he knew that Jesus was with him, even though Jesus had already ascended into heaven. Jesus came to John and revealed himself to John on the Sabbath Day. John saw Jesus standing on Mt. Zion with one hundred and forty-four saints having his Father’s name written in their foreheads. Jesus revealed to him that these are the saints who sing the song of Moses (the Ten Commandments) and it seems to be a new song to the majority of people. These saints follow Jesus where-ever he goes; there is no fault in them for they have clean hearts. Are you in the number of the square root? You can get in the number. Just ask God to forgive you for your sins, you forgive others, ask God to put his Spirit in you, and you will be able to keep his commandments. Yes, then God will bring you up with him to Mt. Zion. [Rev. 1: 10, 14: 1-12, 15: 3, 22: 14, Deut. 6: 4-9, Matt. 6: 12-15, Luke 11: 13, Gal. 5: 22-23, Is. 56: 1-7]

The Mt. of Olives is such a precious place for this is where Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the last Passover supper that Jesus ate with his disciples was in an upper room in the Mt. of Olives. After supper, he went out into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He asked Peter, James and John to pray with him in another spot in the Garden, but they fell asleep. Judas betrayed him in the Garden. The servants and captains of the high priest, Caiaphas, took Jesus to him. Caiaphas and his council thought on how to have Jesus put to death. They delivered him to Governor Pontus Pilate. Pilate found no fault with him so he sent him to King Herod. Herod found no fault with Jesus, so he sent him back to Pilate. The crowd convinced Pilate to have Jesus crucified and to release Barabbas, who was a murderer. Yes, Jesus bore his cross down the road of Via Delarosa and was crucified outside of Jerusalem’s gate. He took our sins upon himself, that we may be free from sin that causes sicknesses and death. He was in the grave three days and three nights preaching to the patriarchs who were in the grave that they too may be free. He

arose from the grave and he lives forever more. He has ascended into heaven, but he is coming back. And all those who have accepted him and obeyed him, shall arise also to live with him for ever more. [Matt. 2:1, 26:2,30,36, 12: 40, 27: 5053, St. Mark 26: 57, John 18: 12-14, Luke 23: 4-11, 18, Rev. 1: 17-18] However, before Jesus appears, he will place his feet upon the Mt. of Olives and the mountain will split; and half of the mountain will remove toward the north and half of the mountain shall remove toward the south and cause a great earthquake. People will be in the valley between the split mountain crying out to the rocks saying, “Fall on us and hide and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne and from the wrath of the lamb. For the great day of his wrath is come and who shall be able to stand?” [Zach.14: 1-5, Rev. 6: 15-17, Psalm 24: 3-5, Is. 13:6- 9, Joel 2: 1, Heb. 10: 23-32]

Celebration of Life When someone you love becomes a Memory

In Loving Memory of

Memorial Deadline Mondays 12 Noon (except holidays)

Jeffrey S. Coleman June 29, 2015 June 29, 2017

No length of time can take away our thoughts of you each day. We who love you sadly miss you, as it dawns another year, In our lonely hours of thinking, thoughts of you are always near. We miss you in so many ways, we miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall it’s when we miss you most of all. It only takes a little space to write how much we miss you But it will take the rest of our lives to forget the day we lost you. You will always be loved and cherished in our hearts. Lovingly Missed By: mother, Anita Coleman; brothers, Gregory and Shedrick Coleman; and other family and friends.
