NORFOLK, Va. – A Savannah, Georgia native and Sol C. Johnson High School graduate, Petty Officer 2nd Class Alexis Allen is serving on one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Allen works as a logistics specialist aboard the Norfolk-based ship, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of only ten operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today. Logistics specialists are the sailors responsible for managing inventories and issuing repair parts and general supplies. They utilize financial accounting and database systems to preform inventory and financial management functions. “The coolest part of working in supply is the fact that we help every single department on board,” Allen said. “A saying we have here is ‘you can’t fly without supply.’” Sailors’ jobs are highly varied aboard Eisenhower. Approximately 3,200 men and women make up the ship’s company, and they keep all parts of the aircraft carrier running smoothly. They do everything from washing dishes and preparing meals to handling weaponry and maintaining the nuclear reactors. Another 2,000 sailors comprise the air wing, the people who fly and maintain the aircraft aboard the ship.

As students begin looking ahead to graduation and starting a new and exciting chapter in life, it’s a good time to remind both

students and their parents about the important role that immunizations play in that chapter. Chatham County Health Department officials want to encourage soon-to-be high school graduates to get vaccinated against meningococcal disease which causes meningitis. Meningococcal disease is not common; however, when it is contracted it can be dangerous. The bacteria that causes meningococcal disease is spread by ex-

changing respiratory and throat secretions (saliva or spit) during close (for example, coughing or kissing) or lengthy contact, especially if living in the same household or dorm. There are different kinds of meningitis. Bacterial meningitis can be very serious and can even cause permanent disabilities and death. Viral meningitis is the most common type of meningitis and is usually less serious but can still cause illness. “We encourage parents

Danley, a veteran administrator who joins SC State after spending the last two years with the SLD Sports Marketing Group, will assume his duties immediately. The Auburn University graduate succeeds Paul Bryant, who resigned as Bulldog athletics director in December to accept a similar position at Grambling State University. Doug Robertson, head women’s basketball coach at SC State, has been serving as acting AD for the Bulldogs. “I am delighted to welcome Stacy Danley to the Bulldog family and to the senior leadership team of this university. With his many years of experience in athletics management, marketing and fundraising, I believe Mr. Danley is poised to enhance the SC State athletics program,” said SCSU President James E. Clark. “I look forward to him demonstrating his strong talents and abilities by improving the overall management of athletics, including building a more financially sound, revenue-generating program that focuses on fundraising and expanding the fan experience. More importantly, however, I expect him to work to enhance our number one priority – the academic performance of our students, and then building more winning teams,” Clark continued. Danley, who has 21 years of experience in athletics administration, formerly served as Athletics Director at Alabama State and Tuskegee universities. He also worked for the J.F. I am excited to join Clark’s team and serve under his leadership. I look forward to working with the athletics staff, coaches and student athletes, as well as university family and friends as we seek to build the next great chapter of a powerhouse athletics program,” said Danley. The former Auburn University running back spent eight years (19972005) at his alma mater, six years as the assistant athletic director for External Affairs, before being promoted to associate athletic director for External Affairs. He spent his last two years at Auburn as the associate athletic director and men’s sports coordinator, overseeing six Olympic sports. He lettered four years as a running back at Auburn University, where he earned All-SEC honors and was named the SEC Sophomore of the Year among his athletic accomplishments. Following his collegiate career, Danley signed NFL contracts with the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts. After his professional career, Danley returned to Auburn where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 and a master’s in education administration in 1996. While completing his master’s degree, he spent two years as a graduate assistant in the Auburn athletic department, working in the compliance office where he provided support with NCAA and SEC legislative interpretations. Eisenhower, like each of the Navy’s aircraft carriers, is designed for a 50year service life. When the air wing is embarked, the ship carries more than 70 attack fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft, all of which take off from and land aboard the carrier at sea. Powerful catapults slingshot the aircraft off the bow of the ship, and those planes land upon their return to the aircraft carrier by snagging a steel cable with an arresting hook that protrudes from the rear of the aircraft. All of this makes Eisenhower a self-contained mobile airport and strike platform, often the first response to a global crisis because of an aircraft carrier’s ability to operate freely in international waters anywhere on the world’s oceans. “I’ve made some of my best friends while stationed on the Ike,” Allen said. “My favorite part of the command is definitely all the people I’ve met.” Eisenhower was commissioned in 1977 and named after former president and Army general Dwight D. Eisenhower, who distinguished himself through service and leadership during World War II. As the supreme commander of Allied Forces in Western Europe during World War II, Eisenhower led the massive invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on D-Day, June 6, 1944. “Every Sailor aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower plays an integral part in our success, from the engineering and reactor spaces to the galley and flight deck, and everywhere in between, and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Capt. Paul Spedero, Jr., commanding officer of Ike. “Our many successes are built on their sacrifices and the strength they provide each and every day.” As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Allen and other Eisenhower sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes. “I initially only joined the Navy as a way to access higher education,” Allen said. “But when it came time to reenlist I did because I’ve grown to enjoy this.”

Welcome to Second Arnold Baptist Church “The House of Worship”

A Place for Service Just as Jesus Christ came “not to be ministered…” we accept our responsibility to reach out in service to others. This applies both within the church family and outside our fellowship. Outreach Ministry first Saturday at 10:00am – Brown Bag, Feeding the Homeless and the Clothes Closet. A Place of Worship – The primary reason we meet together is to focus our attention on God, giving Him our worship and receiving His blessing and inspiration. Morning Worship Service starts at 10:30 am every Sunday (except first Sunday in December – 5:30 pm), Children’s Church at 10:30 am., Youth Sunday. A Place for Learning – To us studying the Bible is vital because is not only instructs us intellectually but also guides us spiritually. We believe it and accept it as God’s Word to man, a Book that is alive and relevant to life today. Learning its truths is a thrilling adventure. Bible Study every Wednesday beginning at 6:45 pm – Youth Bible Study 4th Wednesday at 6:30 pm., Church leadership Seminar, and Training, Seniors Bible Study 4th Wednesday at Noon, Christian Leadership School A Place of Enrichment – For every person at every age level we offer a wealth of opportunities – special

programs for youth and adult, which fill the church calendar. We now have a ministry for children. You can be sure that in this kaleidoscope of activities, there’s more than one place where you can be personally enriched. Black History, Valentine’s Day Brunch, Easter Program, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Children’s Day, Educational Day, Grandparents’ Breakfast, Grandparents’ Day, Revival (emphasis on Youth), Vacation Bible School, Brotherhood and Ministering Women-Sisterhood One Night Revival. A Place for Friendship – Nothing quite compares to the joy of Christian friendship. That’s why we make it a priority to build lasting bonds between the members of our church family – bonds of concern and genuine commitment to one another. Best of all, this circle of care is ever widening. We’d love for it to include you, too. all who shared our grief through cards, calls, visits, hugs, tears, and prayers. While we were blessed to receive excellent care and service from the staff of Atlanta Medical, Emory University Hospital, Candler Hospital, Pruitt Healthcare, Bynes-Royall Funeral Home, and AllCare Medical, we would like to give special thanks for the sincere kindness shown to my mother and our family by the doctors, nurses, social workers, administrative staff, and chaplain. Our family will always cherish your kindness. No words could ever express our appreciation for your service and support.

Baby boomers, whose parents looked askance at ‘moving in together,’ are doing just that in their old age, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. The Pew Research Center reports that more seniors than ever before are cohabitating. In fact, Pew says that the number of unmarried seniors who are living together increased by a whopping 75% between 2007 and 2016. They do it for companionship and, of course, the financial benefits. ###

Finding new worlds

The man some call the smartest man alive, Stephen Hawking, has a dire warning for us Earthlings: leave the planet before it’s too late, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. The renowned wheel-chairbound physicist and cosmologist has concluded that the world will end in 100 years and we need to “evacuate” the Earth and become a “multi-planetary” society if the human race is to survive.

Retirement ain’t what it used to be

In the good old days dreams of retirement almost always had us picturing a place where heavy coats were not required, where you could bask in the warmth of the sun-and had all the time in the world to do just that. But, as we got closer to the day when we thought we could make those dreams come true the, economic realities of growing old rudely awakened us, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. The fact is that in this day and age not many of us old timers are confident that we can afford retirement, says AMAC. A new survey conducted by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that too many of us who are still in the workforce are stressed at the thought of retirement yet we “are not taking steps to prepare for it.” The poll also concluded that there is a great deal of financial insecurity in the workplace causing workers to have lower levels of retirement confidence.
