His “Best Day”: Funeral for Joseph “Murray” Rivers a Fitting Celebration By Patricia A. West

“Best day of my life.” That favorite greeting from Joseph Murray Rivers ironically serves as a description for his funeral held at 11 am on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in Savannah. Clergy, family, friends, and fellow public servants gathered at St. James Catholic Church in Savannah to make up a capacity group of over 400 mourners for proper Roman Catholic rites. They came representing all walks of life with uplifting gospel singing, prayer, reflection, and the Homilist by Rev. Romanus Obiora Ezeugwu, MSP Pastor. The Honorable Mr. Rivers, a former Commissioner of Chatham County for over 20 years and advocate for public transportation, was a communicant of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. Father Ezugwu referred

to Mr. Rivers as “a man of the people who was a good citizen, friend, coach, and politician.” More importantly, Father Ezugwu pointed out that he was “a gospel instrument to help others.” During his very insightful eulogy, Father Ezugwu received several shouts of “Amen” when he stated that it is not infrastructure, but service to help the poor and needy. He said that Mr. Rivers would have been rich, but decided to enrich others. During the well-attended wake held at St. Benedict the Moor Church on the evening of April 11, resolutions were presented from the City of Savannah by Mayor Eddie DeLoach, from Chatham County Commissioners by Commissioner Bobby Lockett, and the from Chatham Area Transit Authority

Board by former Commission Chair Pete Liakakis. Reflections were shared by Coach Walter B. Simmons who recalled that as a young boy “Joe” could never hit a baseball. Johnnie “Blattie” Brown recalled his close bonding and friendship with Rivers his entire life. Finally, his close friend and ‘brother’ Commissioner James J. Holmes related the story of how he first met Joe as a boy who was walking through the neighborhood and protecting the pigeons from their boyhood mischief. Savannah State University attorney and governmental consultant Joe Steffen reflected on Rivers community service and their friendship. First District Alderman Van Johnson spoke of Rivers as a mentor who told him, “You can do it.” See Rivers-Page 4A

Reading, Discussion of Dr. Johnson’s Book - May 7th

Please join us for a Live Reading, Discussion and Book Signing of Dr. Otis S. Johnson’s Book, From “N Word” to Mr. Mayor, Experiencing the American Dream, on Sunday, May 7, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Beach Institute, 502 East Harris Street, Savannah, GA 31401 Otis S. Johnson, Ph.D., former mayor of the city of Savannah, Georgia has written a book entitled, From “N Word” to Mr. Mayor. The book is a biological journey of Dr. Johnson through Jim Crow to the 21st Century. It tells the story of his quest for the “American Dream” and the struggle to make that dream a reality as a black American. Dr. Johnson writes about how he grew up in the Jim Crow era, participated in the Civil Rights Movement and benefited from the opportunities made available as a result of the movement. His experience is similar to that of many African Americans during that period of American history.

The book is written in an easy-to-read style and is heavily documented with references to give credibility to the views of the author. From “N Word” to Mr. Mayor gives hope to the idea that through preparation and struggle one can still achieve the elusive American Dream. The book can be purchased online at www.facebook. com/authorotissjohnson.

The Gospel Truth

With Gwendolyn Greene The Gospel Of The Kingdom April 2017 Thirty-seven years ago as I sat at home waiting for the birth of my fifth child, and listening to the gospel over the radio, a woman’s voice said, “Taken! I don’t want to be taken, I want to be left!” Then the radio went off. I ran over to the radio, hit it and said, “More, more, I want to hear more.” I went back to my chair in astonishment. Then I turned and there was an angel standing in the doorway that led to the room that I was in. My spirit walked out of my body over to the angel, she put an envelope in my hand. (I was a big pregnant glow of light.) I walked back to the chair where my body was, and re-entered my body. The angel had come to give me the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom. Jesus told us to pray that his kingdom come in earth as it is in heaven. This will be accomplished when all people of all nations who have not repented of their sins and have not accepted Jesus as their Savior, be destroyed (dead and gone, taken) from of the face of the earth and only righteous people be alive and remain (left) on earth. Then Jesus shall appear, and they that died in Christ shall arise from the grave and the righteous people who are left on earth shall be gathered to gather with them. They all shall have incorruptible celestial bodies and shall reign with Jesus on earth for a thousand years, which is the Great Sabbath Day. When the Sabbath Day is over, the wicked shall arise from the dead to be judged

and casted into the lake of fire. Jesus said, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the entire world for a witness unto all nations and then shall the end come.” [Matthew 24: 14, Revelation 9:18-21, 20: 4-9 and 15] Some time ago, Paul and Matthew Crouch, who is now deceased, questioned two men together on his TBN television Program about the second coming of Jesus and the Rapture Theory. One man explained that the Rapture is the same thing as the Resurrection and that it takes place after the Great tribulation. His belief is plainly stated in the Bible and documented plainly in many scriptures. Please read all of the scriptures in this article, pray for understanding, and think about this: if saints were going to fly away and disappear and leave sinners on the earth, where would the bodies of the ones who flew away be? Their bodies certainly would not be with the Lord; for flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God and the body must return to the dust of the ground. The body without the spirit is dead. Therefore, if the spirit flies away and becomes absent from the body, then, their dead bodies would be visible and will have not disappeared. Jesus is not coming back twice, once for the saints and then again for sinners (who were so called left behind.)Jesus said, be ready and that he is coming back immediately after the Great Tribulation. [I Corinthians 1: 29, James

2: 26, Matthew 24: 28-31 and 44] Think about this: The Bible says we who are alive and remain shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air and there shall we be with him forever. What does alive mean and what does remain mean? Alive means not dead and gone and remain means left. Jesus will send his angels who are reapers to destroy the tares out his kingdom first and all things that offend shall be destroyed out of his kingdom, but the wheat, who are the righteous, shall remain in his kingdom; because the kingdom of God is already in the righteous. We will reign with the Lord and rule over his goods not over people. Caught up in the air means to become spiritual beings and that the grave or gravity can not restrain the body. In Ezekiel’s vision he said that he was left after God slew the wicked. Also, Ezekiel said that God began to kill the unrighteous in the sanctuary first. Peter confirmed Ezekiel’s prophecy. When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for his disciples and for all who would believe in him he said, “I have given them thy word; and the world has hated them because they are not of this world. I pray not that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil.” Read the following scriptures to help you to understand how the end of the age will come and how the kingdom of God will come on earth as it is in heaven.

Just as America has tax evaders, we have people in the household of faith trying to dodge adversity. Adversity is so high we can’t go over it; so wide we can’t go around it; so low we can’t go under it. Booker T. Washington once said, “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which one has overcome trying to succeed.” Adversity comes into our lives in many forms. It comes to us at work, at church, at home, and wherever we are. Whatever form adversity come to us, we must remain faithful to God. There’s no such thing as instant success. Instead, success is a process that involves some failures along the way. In fact, the people who usually succeed in

life are the one who have failed more than anybody else! Adversity is a general term that includes trouble, affliction, opposition, pressure, chastening, anguish, testing, or tribulation that is greater than our ability to resolve. When adversity comes to us we often think, “What have I done wrong?” or “Why is God punishing me?” This is wrong thinking! Adversity can be our greatest motivation for spiritual growth or our deadliest means of discouragement. When we think of a biblical character that was faced with adversity, we often think of Job. He was definitely hit with adversity, but we will deal with him as a later time Joseph. The story of Joseph starts in the 37th chapter of Genesis. There are some lessons on how to embrace adversity

that we can learn from the life of Joseph. First, he dealt with adversity of jealousy from his brothers (Genesis 37:5). Then he dealt with the adversity of being falsely accused (Genesis 39:14). Through all that Joseph went through, knowing that the Lord was with him, he embraced adversity. Because Joseph embraced adversity, God evaluated him. Genesis 41:41 says, “And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, see I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.” In order to achieve your dreams, you must learn how to embrace adversity because it will take you to your destiny. And that’s the simply gospel. Christ Church International “Changing Your Tomorrow Today!”

are growing old and there is nothing you can do to stop the process, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. AMAC suggests you embrace old age even if you are only in your 20s and 30s; there are things you can do now to make life easier in your later years. Youngsters, of course, feel invincible. It’s only natural and, some would say, you have a right to feel that way but that feeling of invincibility won’t last long. Doctors will tell you it is also a time to make lifestyle adjustments that will stand you in good stead in your later years. So, get used to eating the right foods and establishing an exercise regimen. Go and see your doctor and he or she will tell you what else you can do to create a healthy and happy lifestyle. Take a tip from your elders: it’s not easy growing old. But, there are things you can do to now to help you live a long, healthy and active life.

Potato chip famine

Snackers in Japan face a potato chip famine. Storms in the country’s biggest potato fields have done severe damage to the crops there causing Japan’s biggest producers of chips to halt production, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. Shoppers emptied the shelves throughout the nation and at least one chipmaker is now importing potato chips from the U.S.

Missing monster

Nessie’s gone missing and a reward is being offered to anyone who can find the missing monster, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. The elusive Loch Ness Monster has not been sighted in eight months and authorities in Scotland are worried. They are asking residents and visitors to keep a sharp eye out in case the creature surfaces again. You can join the search by logging on to the official Loch Ness Monster Web cam.
