TWO HALL OF FAMERS MAKE HISTORY AGAIN AS NRHA $10 MILLION SIRES

Gunnatrashya

A mere five months after crossing the last milestone, Gunnatrashya is now an NRHA $10 Million Sire. With his superior breeding, it’s no surprise to see the 2023 NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee among the top of the record books. Sired by NRHA $14 Million Sire Gunner and out of Natrasha, Gunnatrashya was bred by Katarina Dorminy of Georgia. Arcese Quarter Horses USA has owned the 2006 stallion since the beginning and has seen him achieve great success both in and out of the breeding shed.

Gunnatrashya had a short but prosperous career within the show arena. With NRHA Seven Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida at the reins, the stallion amassed nearly $220,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings (LTE). The duo’s top wins came during the 2009 NRHA Futurity and subsequent NRHA Derby, where they were crowned the Level 4 Open Champions at each event.

Within his breeding career, Gunnatrashya has sired numerous offspring—with 17 having more than $100,000 in NRHA LTE, including Gunna Stop (out of Stop Little Sister), who is NRHA’s Third All-Time Leading Horse. At this year’s 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel, 20 of the stallion’s progeny made the finals in open and non pro competition and averaged more than $7,000 in earnings. One of these incredible offspring was Gunnabebigtime (out of Big Time Jazzy). With NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Jason Vanlandingham at the reins, the stallion earned over $52,000— taking home the Level 4 Open Reserve Championship.

Vanlandingham and Tami Nelson’s bred and owned Gunnabebigtime went on to add even more to Gunnatrashya’s earnings. The duo won big again in Vegas during The Run For A Million (TRFAM) Open Shootout, taking home the Reserve Championship and $17,551. Then the pair added nearly $30,000 more to the

sire’s earnings at the 100X Reining Classic in Tulsa, OK, where they won the Level 4 Open Derby Reserve Championship, the NARS Level 4 Open Derby Reserve Championship, and the Open Mare Power Championship. Vanlandingham and Gunnabebigtime added approximately $100,000 to Gunnatrashya’s offspring earnings and helped him officially become an NRHA $10 Million Sire.

Gunnatrashya’s highest-earning offspring are:

• Gunna Stop (Stop Little Sister), owned by Amber Gokey and bred by Toyon Ranch, LLC, earning $672,762

• Andiamoe (Wimpys Little Chic), bred and owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA, earning $430,302

• Ten Thirty (Dainty Little Step), owned by Rancho El Fortin and bred by Brooke Wharton, earning $418,788

• Super Marioo (HA Chic A Tune), owned by Tom & Mandy McCutcheon and bred by Hillis Akin Family Partnership, earning

$338,891

• Trash Talkin Spook (I Spook), owned by Marilyn Overgaard and bred by Vicki Dias, earning $320,085

has 23 offspring with more than $100,000 in NRHA LTE and has nearly 700 offspring with earnings registered with the association. With such a successful set of progeny and increased event payouts, the stallion had several horses to help push him over the $10 million mark.

“Magnum” reached this milestone after impressive performances at the 100X Reining Stakes, where his offspring earned $184,531. Magnum With Addytude (out of Dunit With Addytude) took home the 100X Stakes Level 3 Open Championship and fifth place in Level 4 with NRHA Professional Josh Tishman at the reins. Bred by Bruce Koefoot and owned by High Medow Ranch, LLC, Magnum With Addytude added $62,000 to his sire’s offspring earnings.

Magnum Chic Dream

Magnum Chic Dream achieved his first million with NRHA in 2010. Bred by Guy Du Ponchel and owned by Jack and Viola Scott, the 1996 stallion has been one of NRHA’s leading sires for 23 years. Less than a year after crossing the nine-million-dollar mark, Magnum Chic Dream is an NRHA $10 Million Sire—only the fifth in the association’s history.

Magnum Chic Dream earned over $44,000 in NRHA LTE during his show career. NRHA Professional Patti Brownshadel rode the stallion during his first three years in competition. Then, owner Viola Scott took the reins before passing him off to NRHA Million Dollar Rider Casey Hinton. Hinton piloted the horse to the Senior Reining Championship at the 2004 American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show.

From there, the elite stallion began a fulltime breeding career. The NRHA Hall of Famer

Customize My Dream (out of Gunna Be Custom) and NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider Casey Deary added another $40,000 after taking 3rd in the 100X Stakes Level 4 Open. This was straight off their 6th place performance at TRFAM Open Shootout, where they earned a paycheck of over $8,000 and secured a spot in the 2024 Run for a Million Competition for Deary. Bred and owned by Devin Warren, it’s only fitting that Customize My Dream and Deary would be an integral part of helping Magnum cross the $10 million mark after ushering the stallion to his last milestone with their Reserve Championship at the 2022 NRHA Level 4 Open Futurity.

Magnum Chic Dream’s top-earning offspring are:

• Msdreamy (A Gal With A Gun), owned by Rick Christen and bred by Jana Simons, earning $263,131

• Mr Farenheit (Wimpy Little Girl), owned by Morin and Vandorp and bred by Peter Morgan, earning $256,526

• Chic Dreamin (Skeets Red Dunit), owned by Silver Spurs Equine and bred by Casey Hinton, earning $248,880

• Made By Magnum (Ready Make Cowboy), owned by Lucinda Human and bred by Lagle & Savage LLC, earning $200,586

• Taris Dreamer (Taris San Cutter), owned by Ron Thompson and bred by Werner Hermus, earning $194,312.

HF MOBSTER BECOMES A NRHA MILLION DOLLAR SIRE

Along with NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon, NRHA Eight Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani, and NRHA Hall Of Famer Shawn Flarida, Team USA brought home the gold! HF Mobster and Larson also earned sixth place in the individual competition at the event.

“Mobster was a unique horse in that he was really, really sweet to be around but very talented and had a great heart in the show pen,” said Larson.

Mobster is the second-highest earning offspring out of Dun Its Black Gold, which was a good indicator that he would go on to produce many successful horses in open and non pro competition. With 208 moneyearning offspring, the stallion is well on his way to crossing more milestones.

When the dust settled at the Big Sky Reining Classic in Kalispell, Montana, HF Mobster became a National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Million Dollar Sire.

By NRHA Hall of Famer Gunner and out of Dun Its Black Gold, the 2008 stallion was trained and shown solely by NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Jordan Larson. Aside from his maiden trip into the show pen in Mexico, “Mobster” spent his three-year show career with Larson at the reins.

The two amassed more than $120,000 in lifetime earnings (LTE) while writing their names in reining history. The Rhodes River Ranch-bred stallion was an NRHA Futurity finalist, then went on to help Larson win his first NRHA Open Level 4 Derby Championship in 2013. The duo then went to Normandy, France, with Team USA to compete in the 2014 World Equestrian Games.

At the Big Sky Reining Classic, NRHA Professional Meaghan Shea rode Mizzen Mobster (Mizzen Whizzen) to a Derby Open Reserve Championship in the Level 4 and 2 for owner Veronica Robinson. Mason McDowell also rode his own Xtra Fugged About It (Lenas Whizabelle) to the Derby Level 4 Non Pro Championship. These two performances pushed HF Mobster over the mark to become NRHA’s newest Million Dollar Sire.

HF Mobster’s Top Offspring:

• Hollys Hijacker (Conquista Holly), owned by Quarter Dream SRL, bred by Ingalls Land & Livestock, $93,036

• HA Tune Of A Mobster (HA Lena Smart Tune), owned by Heritage Farms, bred by Hillis Akin Family Partnership, $88,217

• CSR Flash Mob (Simply Paris), owned by Diane Mesmer, bred by Cutting S Ranch, $62,172

• Quik Draw McGraw (Nestle Quik Chic), owned by Brogan Marie Hill, bred by Fox Meadow Farm, $50,273

• Thug Life (West Coast Smart), owned by Blair Moffet, bred by Troop Quarter Horses, $45,261

NRHA MILLION DOLLAR DAM LIST GROWS TO EIGHT AS BEST STOP CROSSES THE HISTORIC MILESTONE

After the dust settled on a Saturday night at South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Best Shine topped the leaderboard of The Run For A Million’s Million Dollar Competition. Not only did the stallion add half a million dollars to his lifetime earnings (LTE), but he also helped National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Professional Jason Vanlandingham cross the NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider mark and made his mother, Best Stop, the newest NRHA Million Dollar Dam.

Best Stop is by NRHA Four Million Dollar Sire

Custom Crome and out of Rest Stop. Breeder and owner, Marc Wagman of Wagman Ranch Inc., trained the 1999 mare himself, and the pair had a successful career in the show pen. In total, Best Stop amassed nearly $43,000 in NRHA LTE—most of which came with Wagman at the reins. The duo’s top finish came during the 2002 NRHA Futurity, where they took seventh in the Level 4 Non Pro finals.

“Bob Loomis is, in my opinion, the greatest breeder of reining horses, and he’s a close friend who I love dearly,” said Wagman.

NRHA Press Release

“When I moved from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma, I would go down to stay and ride with him as much as possible. When Best Stop was a two-year-old, I took her down to Bob’s to get help. He said, ‘Never sell her, she will be the new Rest Stop. You need to keep her because she will be a great mare.’ Prophetic Bob, he was correct. There were several times I almost sold her, and I am so glad she stayed with me— I love her so much. I trained her myself with a lot of help from Bob and Duane [Latimer], and they were instrumental in helping me. We are great friends to this day.”

The mare’s first foal licensed with NRHA was in 2003, a filly named Lil More Rest. Since then, Best Stop has added 31 more offspring to her NRHA records, with 19 having earnings in the association. Her most accomplished progeny is fittingly the horse that helped her cross this historic milestone. Best Shine is a 2017 stallion by NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire Shine Chic Shine. With Jason Vanlandingham at the reins, the Robert Santagata-owned horse has more than $686,000 in NRHA LTE.

“One thing about Best Stop that really was striking to me is that I bred her to four different studs, and each foal went on to win more than $100,000,” said Wagman. “She crosses on so many studs, which shows just what a remarkable mare she truly is.”

Wagman Ranch Inc. is not only the breeder

and owner of Best Stop but is also the breeder of all the mare’s money-earning offspring. Those offspring include:

• Best Shine (Shine Chic Shine) owned by Robert Santagata and earning $686,036

• Hey Joe (Smart Spook) owned by El Picadero, LLC and earning $135,375

• Late Night Stopper (Jacs Electric Spark) owned by Mark and Kathy Gordon and earning $101,637

• Stop Like A Dream (Magnum Chic Dream) owned by Toyon Ranch, LLC and earning $101,097

• Best Stops Belle (Spooks Gotta Whiz) owned by Wagman Ranch Inc. and earning $35,355

Best Stop has had multiple high-selling fillies in the NRHA Markel Futurity Sales, showing the industry’s desire to have one of her special offspring in their barn.

“She’s been a big part of my life. The friendships that I have forged through her and the people that I have in my life because of her truly makes this so, so special.”

It is safe to say Best Stop has earned the right to be considered one of the association’s top producers after etching her name into the history books as only the eighth NRHA Million Dollar Dam. With amazing athletes in her lineage, there is more to come from this incredible mare and her owner and breeder, Wagman Ranch Inc.

NRHA ANNOUNCES 2023 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES & DALE WILKINSON LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT RECIPIENTS

As the reining industry reaches new audiences and continually breaks records, it becomes even more important to acknowledge and celebrate those who helped pave the way for success. Since 1986, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has been doing just that with the NRHA Hall of Fame and, more recently, the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. With the help of the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF), these individuals, their achievements, and their contributions to the industry are recognized.

Following the August presentation of the NRHA Hall of Fame Committee’s recommended nominees, the Board of Directors and past Hall of Fame inductees voted to approve Dell Hendricks, Robert “Bob Mac” McDonnell and Gunnatrashya for induction into the NRHA Hall of Fame.

Longtime member and judge Dave Belson and the dynamic duo of Jenifer Reynolds & Chris Cook of Sandbur Productions were also announced as the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award recipients for 2023.

“As committee chair, I believe this group is one of the strongest we have put forward,” said Rick Clark, NRHA Past President and current Director-at-Large. “Our committee was unanimous on every one of them as a selection to put forward, and I can say I have had the pleasure of knowing each of them personally. What they have meant to our industry, whether it was showing or owning a horse, and what they give back to the association is priceless and has shaped where we are today.”

These honorees will be recognized on Wednesday, November 29, during Sliders’ Night Out, presented by Toyon Ranch, held at the OKC Fairgrounds during the 2023 NRHA Futurity and Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships.

“I had the honor of contacting each one of the recipients, or their family members, to share the news, and they were absolutely thrilled,” said Clark. “They all have their own legacy with NRHA, and we look forward to hearing from them at Sliders’ Night Out. We hope you will buy tickets and join us for a great night!”

DELL HENDRICKS

NRHA Professional Dell Hendricks, widely known for his success in the show pen, has won every major event, including the NRHA Futurity, and is a multiple NRHA Derby and American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Champion. Hendricks is also the only individual to have won the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Open five times. In 2005, he represented the USA at the World Equestrian Games, bringing home individual and team Gold medals, and became an NRHA

Million Dollar Rider later that year.

“Dell Hendricks served on the executive committee and traveled internationally to host clinics on his own time to give back,” said Clark. “He is as deserving as anybody for what he gave to our industry, and I thought it was so exciting that he is finally part of this elite group.”

However, his contributions to the reining

WorldWideSlide.com October 1, 2023

industry have spanned far past his $1.8 million in NRHA lifetime earnings. Hendricks has been a long-time committee and board member and served as the association president in 2006.

A graduate of Lamar College with a degree in Horse Training & Management in 1992, Hendricks continued to give back to the equine community. Whether this was through a nationally known breeding program of 25 years or holding fundraisers to benefit the youth membership and RHF, he always found ways to stay involved.

Through his accomplishments and longtime dedication and service to the reining industry, Dell Hendricks deserves to receive reining’s highest honor.

BOB MAC

The late Robert John McDonnell, better known as ‘Bob Mac,’ was also known as an innovator. With a four-digit NRHA membership number, he spent decades shaping the future of reining and worked tirelessly in this pursuit.

He became known for his speed in a turnaround, a maneuver that had not yet been executed at a level that brought excitement to the show pen. After finessing the move, he could train any horse to complete it at speeds unheard of at those times. He revolutionized the maneuver.

This was not the only way he helped propel the sport forward. Along with advancing

training techniques, he also used his experience as a farrier to advance the sliding plate to a ‘sliding disk’ and would make bits, spurs, and shoes to help reining horses execute maneuvers at higher levels.

Outside of the show pen, he gave back to the association through serving on the NRHA Board and is credited with helping NRHA’s judging program be at the elite level it is today. “He was very instrumental in the judging system we have today,” said NRHA Vice President Mike Hancock. “He did not put the final touches or make it as formal as it stands, but his ideas formed the basis for the standardized judging system we have today.”

Throughout his show career, he had success at every level, from ancillary classes to aged events. His resume was lengthy, from earning NRHA’s first Open World Championship on Sir Cactus Wimpy to the 1976 NRHA Futurity Reserve Championship and an AQHA Junior Reining World Championship. He also trained, showed, and stood his own stallion, Lads 50. At the time, there were only around eight Lawson Trophy reining events throughout the country, and he won an Open Lawson on Lads 50 as a 3-year-old before they arrived

at the NRHA Futurity. This brought them into elite company, as only three horses have accomplished this in NRHA history.

“Having people inducted into our Hall of Fame that were around during the association’s early, growing stages and who made a big impact is a testimony that we have not forgotten all of the lessons that we have learned,” Hancock said.

GUNNATRASHYA

Gunnatrashya keeps adding one accolade after another to his record, and a Hall of Fame induction is the perfect culmination of this sire’s success.

By NRHA $14 Million Sire Gunner and out of Natrasha, the stallion, owned by Arcese Quarter Horses USA, has been destined for greatness since he set foot in the show pen.

Gunnatrashya crossed the NRHA $10 Million Sire mark in September, just five months after crossing nine million, an impressive feat of its own. This 2006 stallion also sired three of the past four NRHA Level 4 Open Futurity Champions, and in the one year that he did not sire the champion, he sired the reserve champion.

The Leading Futurity Sire Award, created to honor the late Peter Phinny’s impact on the reining industry, was created in 2021. In the first two years since its inauguration, Gunnatrashya has been the recipient. At the 2022 NRHA Futurity, the stallion had ten offspring in the Open Finals and five in the Non Pro Finals. The offspring earned $613,444 in both finals for an average of $40,896,

making him the award recipient for the second consecutive year.

Gunnatrashya was bred by Katarina Dorminy and co-owned by the Dorminys and Bill Horn. He was sold to Arcese Quarter Horses USA as an early 3-year-old. Under the guidance of NRHA Hall of Famer Shawn Flarida, the duo won the All-American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity. The pair then accomplished something that only two horses before him had done; they went on to win the NRHA Futurity after their Congress win. Gunnatrashya was again crowned the 2010 NRHA Derby Champion with Flarida at the reins. All told, his NRHA lifetime earnings extended past $218,000.

Clark. said, “Mr. Arcese has built as strong an alliance between Europe and the USA as anybody, and it is thrilling to see it recognized with this stallion’s success. Mr. Arcese, who is now 90 years old, and his whole family have made such an impact on our industry, and so has this stallion. I am not sure where our sport would be without their family, and I am so thrilled for them.”

WorldWideSlide.com October 1, 2023 FEATURE STORY

JENIFER REYNOLDS AND CHRIS COOK

Most would say that the history books of NRHA would be much barer without the impact Jenifer Reynolds and Chris Cook have had in telling the stories of those in the reining industry. They have devoted themselves to bringing words to life through their commentary and video production.

From being a master of ceremonies at many NRHA Awards Banquets to providing colorful commentary at major NRHA events—to Sandbur Video, Inside Reining, and Horse of the West—Jenifer and Chris helped reiners celebrate their highest accomplishments while also bringing the sport into homes which may have never heard of it.

They have spent their time traveling across the country, whether times were profitable or difficult, even during the height of the COVID pandemic, to tell the stories of horses and riders in the reining industry.

“As the equine world has seen ups and downs due to numerous challenges, we tried

to work with Jenifer and Chris to tell the story of both Oklahoma City and our relationship with the horse show industry in a way that we all could be proud of,” said Mike Carrier, 2020 Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and past president of the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The manner in which Jenifer and Chris so meaningfully tell the stories of the people, horses, and events that have made the performance horse industry such a significant part of the overall industry, along with the beauty and grace of the partnership between humans and the love [of horses], is a tie that binds so many to Oklahoma City and our commitment to NRHA.”

The true magic of reining is shown through video, not words, and this duo’s impact in bringing shows of all sizes to homes across the United States is immeasurable. They have become a staple in countless families across the reining community, expressed through countless letters of support for their nomination, especially from NRHA Professionals.

For their creation of an archive of reining’s historical moments and exposure, which created immeasurable growth and exposure for the sport, it is evident Jen and Chris have etched their own role in reining history.

DAVE BELSON

Dave Belson has worn many hats in his extensive tenure with NRHA. He has been a ranch owner, stallion owner, breeder, non pro competitor, judge, and traveled internationally to represent NRHA since becoming a member in 1983. He was the founder, owner, and manager of 5B Quarter Horses, which stood several wellknown stallions over the years and served as a foundation for wellknown trainers and judges such as Randy Paul, Brent Naylor, and Brian Bell.

Dave has owned and stood great stallions at 5B Quarter Horses, including Gangster Chic, Mr Rattle N Hum, Loomis Su, Doc N Jose, Amberjacks Image, and Bommernicker. While standing these stallions, Dave handled every aspect of the breeding program. He has also been the proud owner of several NRHA Futurity and Derby Finalists and NRBC Level 3 Open Champion, Mr Rattle N Hum.

Along with his own endeavors in the reining industry, Belson always found time to give back to the organization. As the founder and first president of the Arizona Reining Horse Association (AzRHA) in 1985, he was critical in building a foundation of growth in the

southwest. Belson served three separate terms on the AzRHA board and held seats on the NRHA and RHF boards.

As a judge, Belson has served the association for 35 years and traveled worldwide while doing so. Due to being such a positive ambassador of the sport, there are likely few who don’t know him. He was also instrumental in changing the rules for retired judges to maintain a bit/back gate judges’ card.

“Dave was the guy who didn’t want to micromanage you; he wanted you to figure out how to do it on your own,” said NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider Brian Bell. “We were kids at the time, and he was really good to us— he treated us all like we were his kids. He gave a bunch of young guys like us an opportunity to get started and learn how to work our business. I worked partly for him and had my own thing at the same time, and he would always help.”

These incentives allow our riders and owners to get a piece of the largest payout to date,” Emily Konkel, NRCHA executive director, said. “We will be paying out our Western Bloodstock Sale Incentive, APHA Chrome Cash and Gelding Incentive along with two new incentives for our high placing mare in the Open Futurity Finals sponsored by East West Equine and our new and coveted Triple Crown Incentive.”

New for this year is the addition of the Mare incentive sponsored by East West Equine and

the beginning of the Triple Crown incentive. The Mare incentive has $5,000 in added money and will be awarded to the highest placing mare in the Open Snaffle Bit Futurity® finals.

In the NRCHA, only one rider has won the Open Hackamore, the Open Bridle, and the Snaffle Bit Futurity® in the same year. Bobby Ingersoll won the prestigious title in 1975 when he won the Snaffle Bit Futurity® on Hankey Pankey, owned by Strain Ranches, the Open Bridle on Burnt Girl, owned by Stain Ranches, and the Open Hackamore on D’Or Sugar Spice, owned by Don Calegari.

In honor of this feat, the NRHCA launched the Triple Crown Incentive, which will be awarded to a rider who wins the Open Hackamore, the Open Bridle, and the Open Snaffle Bit Futurity® in the same year. The NRCHA has added $30,000, bolstering the purse from the automatic entry fee for horses competing in the Open Bridle, Open Hackamore, and Open Snaffle Bit Futurity®. The purse will be carried forward for each year there is not a winner.

The addition of these incentives will expand the total event payout to over $2.2 million. The Snaffle Bit Futurity®, presented by Metallic Cat, will kick off October 6 through 21 at the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth, Texas. Click here for more information.

The Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity, known as one of the last stops for three-year-old reiners heading to the National Reining Horse Association Futurity, is set to take place from October 20 – 28, 2023, at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
