the pinch of low oil prices, but we’re still in business.” Here in Supply Chain, we’re at the forefront of Savanna’s business activities and our project list indicates that we’re addressing the need for cost-cutting with realistic options, but many of our capital projects will continue to be long-term investments for the company. At this point, we’re somewhere between “cautiously optimistic” and “somewhat dour” in the grand scheme of things. We are feeling the pinch of low oil prices, but we’re still in business. STATUS SUMMARY Here is a quick run-down of Supply Chain’s projects as of late January 2015: We’ve seen the closure of four offices: Well Servicing in Carlyle, SK and Lacombe, AB; as well as Drilling in Haughton, LA and Redcliff, AB. The Redcliff and Carlyle properties will be sold which will help offset costs, and the Well Servicing and Drilling properies in Nisku will also be sold once the new Leduc facilities for WS and Drilling are opened in late 2015. A thorough review of our vendor agreements is also being undertaken in an effort to standardize products across our business units and operations. We’ve asked suppliers and vendors to adjust pricing and/or consider other cost reduction options, and to stream-

line and maximize volume pricing by leveraging market share as opposed to spending. Asset management is another cost-cutting technique we’re looking at. We’ll be redistributing existing assets between facilities and business units where it makes sense to do so. There will be disposal of idle or non-working assets as well, and a complete re-assessment of our fleet vehicles will be looked at. This may involve a change in vehicle assignments or simply disposal of some portions of our fleet. Supply Chain is always looking for continuous improvement across all of our operations. In a backhanded way, the strained market conditions and decreased level of activity force us to investigate efficiencies, streamline processes, and cut waste. Some would call this tightening our belts. One recent development in the area of utility providers will be the strong likelihood of signing up Sponsor Energy as our utility supplier for new facilities currently under construction. Existing properties are locked into long-term contracts with other utility providers, but the new properties being built are not, so the aggressive pricing that Sponsor Energy offers and their policy of donating a portion of their profits back to charity of our choosing, will help us save a bit of money off the top and we can continue to give back to our community outside of our limited charitable giving program. This is a great example of building relationships for long-term sustainability. Lastly — and one of really good news — is that we’ll be completing the building of our two remaining telescopic triple rigs, Rig 802 and Rig 803. They are scheduled to be delivered later in 2015. Our first triple (Rig 801) was recently unveiled in November 2014 and is currently under contract in Texas. Getting 802 and 803 fired up will be some positive news we can all use. STOLLERY TOY DRIVE

jim’s

For 10 years, Savanna’s Jim Okrusko has co-ordinated the Stollery Children’s Hospital Toy Drive. This year he topped his own expectations.

drive to help J im Okrusko knows a thing or two about giving back to his community. He’s cut his hair many times for Kids with Cancer, and has been heavily involved in fundraising and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease, which has stolen many of his family members over the years. However, it was the birth of his twins — a boy and a girl, in June 2000 — that brought his attention to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. There were complications with the pregnancy and the twins were delivered at 23 weeks, well ahead of a full-term pregnancy. His son Aaron weighed only 780 grams at birth, and his daughter, Brittany, arrived a day later weighing even less at 480 grams. Sadly, she died two weeks later, unable to overcome her medical complications. Both siblings had experienced a lot of medical problems from day one and Aaron continues to live with many of them to this day. Aaron has undergone countless operations and procedures and was even chosen by the Children’s Miracle Network on several occasions to be their Miracle Child, but he’s not able to do things that other kids can so they’ve had to decline each time. Jim and his then wife had spent close to two years in and out of the Stollery (and more than 20 surgeries!) before their son was actually discharged in 2002; and in that time they got to meet families, doctors, nurses, counselors, and caregivers who would become their extended family. At one point, Aaron had a severe brain hemorrhage which predated his cerebral palsy diagnosis, and now he is wheelchairWWW.SAVANNAENERGY.COM

When Jim joined Savanna Drilling in July 2011 as a purchaser in Nisku, he brought his passion for the Stollery with him. On this, his third toy drive with Savanna, and 10th overall, he collected his biggest and most successful donation to date — well over $15,000 in toys and gift cards. Or, in more practical terms, it was two truckloads of stuff. Jim followed up this successful run with a heartfelt thanks to his friends, family, coworkers, vendors, and anyone else who contributed: “I am humbled at the generosity of so many people and am proud to be a part of such a great company and industry and to be so lucky to be the person to deliver and extend that generosity to such deserving children and their families. As you can see from some of the pictures with our gifts, the looks on the children’s faces makes all of this so worthwhile. To know that we are all responsible for their joy is touching beyond words.” One thing that Jim did differently when he involved Savanna in his toy drives was to sweeten the pot for his co-workers: if anyone wished to donate $2,500 to the Stollery — they were able to cut or shave his hair in any style they wished and he would proudly wear it like that for one week. Jim would even provide the clippers! He didn’t have to wait long for his colleagues to answer the challenge. Numerous

bound and cannot hear. Each time he sees his father, though, he knows who he is and offers up a wild punch...dad has the bruises to prove it. Aaron is currently in the Rosecrest Home for Disabled Kids, a place that is a miracle onto itself, according to Jim. [Editor’s note: Jim asks that readers please Google “Friends of Rosecrest Society” and consider donating to the facility.] After going through the emotions of his ordeal with the twins, Jim was inspired to give back as much as he could. In 2004, he started doing toy drives, walks, and haircuts for the children of the Stollery and hasn’t stopped since.

Jim, along with Melody Duncan from Alberta Health Services, prepare to sift through the hundreds of donated toys. RIG-N-DIG • JANUARY 2015

TOY DRIVE Jim’s efforts have touched the entire Stollery community.

This is what a $2,500 haircut looks like! Jim’s offer of having his head shaved for a donation of $2,500 or more was taken up by the crew of Savanna Rig 634 northeast of Hinton, AB. Jim agreed to wear it proudly for one week.

rigs generously donated cards and cash. Jim would like to give a special acknowledgement to Rig Manager Derek Rideout, and his crew on Rig 636, as well as Bonavista Energy Company, Black Dragon Oilfield Services Ltd., and Pro Torque for their contribution of gift cards and toys. The winner of Jim’s haircutting contest, though, was Sheridan Ryan and Rig 634 for donating a stockpile of gift cards that brought Jim the most unique haircut a person could ask for. As Jim explains, “the drive to the rig was so worth it...we got $2,500 worth of gift cards! I was proud to wear that haircut to show people my commitment and the evidence of some really big hearts in this world.” Jim would like to extend a huge thankyou for everyone’s support of his annual toy drive for the Stollery. Without supporters, he wouldn’t have a drive. Jim reminds us that these kinds of drives are not only good for the kids and their families, but are a way for coworkers and community members to come together as a team and build relationships in the industry as well as with each other. n

MEET RIG 412

o

ver the last year, Emery Sutton and his crew on Rig 412 have had an excellent track record showing that with good teamwork and communication, incidents can be eliminated from the work place. The Canadian HSE department would like to recognize Emery and his crews for their hard work and dedication to safety, creating a path for others to follow. Q: Can you give us some insight as to your history with Savanna? A: I started as a motor hand when it was Trailblazer Drilling in 2004 when Rig 11 was built. Throughout the years, I ended up on numerous 1500 series rigs working my way up the ranks, but I now have the pleasure of managing one of the first TDS 3000 platforms…Savanna Rig 412. Q: What are some of the challenges you’ve overcome in order to keep your rig running safely as well as efficiently? A: New employees. I find them to be one of the biggest challenges. It is important from Day One of employment to train and mentor them properly. And yes, at first a new employee will not be the most efficient person on the crew, but with the right tools and guidance, that can change very quickly. Q: How do you encourage your crews to continue their engagement in Savanna’s Vision & Values over an extended period of time? A: Savanna’s Vision & Values are talked about and exercised on a daily basis which constantly reminds the guys that we are out here to do the best job we can and return home safe. Q: How would you best describe the atmosphere between crew members on your rig?

A: The atmosphere is fun, friendly but yet business orientated and also competitive. With that mixture the crew members treat each other like family but know this is a place of work and that gives them the encouragement they need to want to do and be the best at their job. Q: Why is it important to minimize down time, and do you have a system in place to prevent this? A: Down time is nonproductive time on a rig that nobody wants to have. There are times when it is unavoidable, but preventative maintenance, organization, and dedication are all key in helping minimizing it. The crew members of this rig always have the mindset that if we look after the rig, the rig will look after us. Q: Is there anything else you would like to add? A: I would like thank my guys for the solid job they have done, and hope to see you all again when we fire back up.

AUSTRALIANA

Meet & Greet 1. What brought you to Savanna? Where have you worked previously? After working in mining, I was keen for an opportunity to work in the more glamorous industry of oil and gas and, if possible, somewhere in South East Queensland. But it was Savanna’s focus on innovation that made me want to work here. 2. Where have you worked previously in this industry? My resources experience started at a contract copper/gold mine near Coober Pedy in the South Australian desert. Then I moved to open cut coal mines of varying types located around Moranbah Senior Business Analyst and Mackay in Central Queensland. My (Brisbane, aus) gas experience is limited to some wells we developed while I was at BHP Billiton & Mitsui, applying proprietary Tight Radius Drilling technology owned by a subsidiary.

Kevin O’Brien

3. What was your very first job? McDonald’s – my starting pay was around $4.20 an hour, but if I worked the midnight shift it went to over $7.00 an hour! 4. What do you like to do when you are not working? Trail running, bike rides or the beach with my family. 5.

What is your favourite quote? “If you don’t have a target you won’t achieve it.”

6. What excites you about your role at Savanna? People have a lot of pride in what they do and pride in working here. The high spec plant and equipment is also pretty cool.

EMPLOYEE PROFILE

MEET PETER MALONZO Assurance Analyst based in Calgary, AB

What brought you to Savanna and what is your role? I came to Savanna because I have never worked for an oil and gas company. My current role at Savanna is Assurance Analyst. Where have you worked previously? Prior to coming here, I worked at Bennett Jones, IBM, Syscal.com, and Southland Transportation. What was your very first job? The very first job I held was as a busboy at the Keg. If you were to recommend one book to read, what would it be and why? Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I recommend this book because the message which Shelley conveys is not only accurate but timeless. We should not dwell on situations that are outside of our immediate control because we are bound to lose control of ourselves. What are your top five favourite movies? Gandhi, The Shawshank Redemption, Schindler’s List, A Beautiful Mind, and King Kong (from 2005). Who is your favourite musical artist? I don’t have a favourite musical artist but listen to all types of music...except rap. What’s the most exotic destination you’ve visited and why did you go there? Having visited tropical places such as Mexico, Hawaii, and Thailand, I would have to say Thailand struck me as the most exotic destination. I went to Thailand to briefly escape the harsh winter in Calgary and I heard that the locals are friendly. What part of the world does your family originate from? My parents and siblings are from Vietnam and the Philippines. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I enjoy spending time with family and friends but more importantly with my wife and daughter, hit the gym, read (or watch) science and technology articles. Why do you come into work so early in the morning? I am at work very early in the morning because it permits me to avoid the rush hour traffic and also be home early to spend time with my daughter who just turned 17 months. Any final thoughts on your role or experiences with Savanna? My role at Savanna allows me to be continuously challenged, constantly improve, and work with a great group of people.
