There’ll be experiences, there’ll be residual memories and emotions and your subconscious is giving you certain bits of information, which you are not even aware of when you are reading a scene. And all that comes into play, but not at a conscious level. At that point, you just want to make sure that this narrative is clear to you. And when it is clear to you, it’s as clear to the audience when they watch it and you perform it with the kind of clarity that the director wants from you.

I don’t sit and decide on whether I will get funding if I cast certain actors. The film has to be financially viable. It has to make some finances and there has to be some return on investment. If an audience goes and sees a film that is based on two ladies and which is headlined by two older women, it would be great. But in the financial sense, investors would give less money to make the film.

eath. It’s sombre, painful and dark. And in Hindi movies it is often the premise for high intensity melodrama. ‘Main marnewala hoon’ when uttered by the protagonist or someone close to him or her is enough to send the entire story into a tizzy of emotions. But when the title of the film is The Sky Is Pink, you are prepared for a rather light take on loss and grief. Not in a dark humour kind of way, but in a ‘tear in the eye and smile on the lips’ kind of way. And Shonali Bose’s film gets you there. At the very beginning we meet Niren and Aditi Chaudhary, a couple who has lost their 18-year-old daughter Aisha. The couple is in grief but before you can delve into their sadness, we hear Aisha’s voice. She introduces us to her parents whom she fondly calls Panda and Moose and her older brother Ishaan whom she calls Giraffe. Aisha is born with SCID – Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, a genetic disorder that does not give her more than a year to live. Niren and Aditi know that to save Aisha they have to take her to London for treatment. Despite financial issues, the couple manages to give Aisha the treatment with help pouring in from family, friends and even strangers. But the couple soon discovers that the treatment won’t last for a few months but years. Amidst all these struggles what stands out is the love that Niren and Aditi share. Yes, there are trying moments and like Aisha puts it, ‘The death of a child usually results in 80 per cent couples getting divorced or living together as strangers’. How Niren and Aditi deal with the loss and how they manage to stay afloat and together despite the several crises they face is what The Sky Is Pink is all about.

The narrative follows a non-linear storytelling. We are taken back and forth in Niren and Aditi’s lives. Having Zaira as the narrator with her wry humour and engaging tone keeps you glued to the proceedings on screen. The film at no point gets overly dramatic or has forced emotions. The writing is well paced and builds up to an emotional end almost perfectly. Yes, there are times when certain aspects of the screenplay seem a tad stretched, even hindering the story, especially Niren and Aditi’s life before they get married. Their interaction before they tie the knot is funny and adds to the lightness quotient of the film, but talking more about their relationship post marriage would have helped in understanding their dynamic better and the love story that the film is based on would have come across much more effectively. The music of the film adds to the story without being an obstacle to the smooth flow. The camera and art department have also done a good job. Niren’s home in Chandni Chowk, the small London apartment, the farmhouse in Delhi, the changes in the lifestyle of the Chaudharys is captured not just in their emotions but in the locations as well. A special mention must be made about Priyanka and Farhan’s look in the film. As the story progresses both actors undergo changes in their appearance and when you see

the film you will realise how it is in sync with the arc of their characters. Be sure to not miss the end credits, because it is every bit special as the movie is. Coming to performances, Priyanka Chopra Jonas sinks her teeth into Aditi. She is perfect in her emotions, maybe too perfect. There are times when we see the star pop-out, but then she lets the character take over soon enough. She is sassy and sentimental and is a delight to watch on screen. Zaira Wasim as Aisha does a wonderful job, both when she is on screen as well as when it is just her voice communicating with us. She makes Aisha her own. She emotes wonderfully with her voice and brings a smile to your face every time you hear her. She does not make Aisha a sad and sickly girl. Even with the oxygen tube, she rocks it! Rohit Saraf as Ishaan may not have a lot of screen time but he is unforgettable. Two of his scenes really stand out, one when he talks to Aisha over the phone and another is his conversation with his father, Niren, after Aisha passes away. He does a fantastic job. And finally Farhan Akhtar as Niren is amazing. His transformation from a young man from Chandni Chowk to a corporate guy in London is nuanced. He brings in the right amount of humour and gravitas to the role. Verdict: Must Watch! Rating: ****

ohn Abraham and Emraan Hashmi starrer Mumbai Saga went on floors in the last week of August in Mumbai. Sanjay Gupta had planned on shooting the film over three months in the nooks of South Mumbai. The film was also supposed to feature Jackie Shroff in a key role. But now we hear that the actor has reportedly walked out of the film. Before you put your thinking hats on, let us tell you that there is no bitter drama involved. As per a source, Bollywood’s bhidu has staged an exit from the film citing date issues. The source said that his shoot dates for Mumbai Saga were clashing with another film as a result of which he had to leave the film. The name of the actor who will step into Shroff’s shoes is still being kept under wraps. Watch this space for more details.

Krrish To The Rescue

ome time back we had told you that the shoot for Hrithik Roshan starrer Krrish 4 has been postponed due to Rakesh Roshan’s ill-health and the film is now all set to go on floors next year. But we have some more scoop on the fourth instalment of the superhero franchise. We have learnt that Rakesh Roshan is now planning to co-direct the film with Sanjay Gupta. A little birdie tells us that after the massive day one numbers of WAR, the makers are planning to mount Krrish 4 on an even bigger scale. Reportedly, the film will be made on a budget of more than `250 crore. We hear that the Super 30 actor will start shooting for his home production once he finishes shooting for another film so that there is enough time for the pre-production process. With Krrish 4 now being taken several notches higher than ever, we are surely in for some major visual treat!

Bull-ish Times

I

t is a good time for Tumbbad actorproducer Sohum Shah. The film that opened to wide critical acclaim recently completed its one year anniversary. Shah’s embodiment of greed and doom in the fantasy film grabbed a lot of attention and opened doors to bigger projects. He was recently seen in the Netflix Original series, Bard Of Blood. And now, the actor tells us that he will be seen playing a pivotal role in Ajay Devgn’s The Big Bull. Shah also revealed that he is currently in Delhi shooting for the film that stars Abhishek Bachchan in the lead and is directed by Kookie Gulati. Shah has a choc-o-block schedule ahead as he is also planning to helm a prequel and a sequel to Tumbbad and build a fantasy franchise based on it.

A

n upcoming actor was offered a part in a much-talked about film starring one of Bollywood’s leading names. The first schedule of the film was planned abroad. But then the actor, who was supposed to join the team, suddenly decided to play evasive. While the makers waited for this young actor to come, he conveniently gave his dates for another project with a wellknown filmmaker that too without having the grace to inform the makers who were waiting for him abroad. While it is okay that the actor was keener on the latter project, it was unprofessional of him to keep the makers of the other film in the dark. Such an attitude at the start of his career can prove to be detrimental in the future. Sigh!

Hello, how are you guys doing? Farhan Akhtar (FA): Amazing! Priyanka Chopra Jonas (PCJ): We are alright. FA: This is our first interview. PCJ: And we are very excited about it. (Everyone laughs) Coming to the film, The Sky Is Pink talks about life and death and most of us have seen death very closely. Did you draw some inspiration from your personal life or experiences? PCJ: Well, I do not think I drew inspiration from my personal experiences but I definitely think that before this, I did not know how to deal with loss, especially when it came to the loss of my father. I was very, very close to him. With this film and after listening to Aditi (Chaudhary) and Niren’s (Chaudhary) perspective on how to deal with death and Shonali’s (Bose) perspective, who has also lost a son, I have healed a lot more. It was a cathartic experience. I don’t think I can do a scene thinking about something that has happened to me, because when I play a character, I am actually trying not to be me. I am trying to embody the person that I am playing and being myself or thinking about my experience at that time would be distracting. There was a moment where one scene got to me really bad. And I just held Shonali and I kept crying. I told her that I am so sorry that she went through all this. I empathised a lot more. But I don’t know how to derive something like this from my personal experiences. Rohit Suresh Saraf (RSS): When I read the script of The Sky Is Pink, I couldn’t help not think about my father. I did think about him a lot. I lost him when I was 11. It was almost uncanny how the scenes were written and what had happened with my father, I don’t want to go into that, but the situation was very similar. So I did think about it a lot, in fact. I don’t think I will say I derived from it, but it really got to me, like she (Priyanka) said. I was an absolute mess. That one day, we were only shooting four to five scenes, which is the entire death sequence. And I was dreading that day. It was much later in the schedule but by the time we got there, I was dreading it. We got through it and the next day I realised how important it was and how much better I felt after shooting those scenes. I think it was needed and I am very glad that it happened. FA: I completely agree with what Priyanka said. We all have, of course, experienced loss in our lives. But

when you are serving a story and when you’re serving a script, it becomes about something else. Of course, there’ll be experiences, there’ll be residual memories and emotions and your subconscious is giving you certain bits of information, which you are not even aware of when you are reading a scene. And all that comes into play, but not at a conscious level. At that point, you just want to make sure that this narrative is clear to you. And when it is clear to you, it’s as clear to the audience when they watch it and you perform it with the kind of clarity that the director wants from you. That’s what we are really thinking about while shooting a scene. On the surface it looks like a light-hearted film, but it’s heavy on emotions. Farhan, if we look at your character graph, you start off as a young lover and then you are a responsible father who loses his daughter. FA: That’s right. How did you, as an actor, travel through this emotional graph? FA: A lot of it just comes from good writing. There was so much on that page, when you first read the whole script. It included all the nuances of the character. Then when I spoke to Shonali, the director, she had great idea of what Niren was like and what she wanted Niren to be and come across as, and you just absorb all of it. Also trying not to overthink it all helps, don’t try and get caught up in things like, I’ll put a full stop here and a comma there. I did not think about all that stuff. So there was not any method as such? FA: No, there was not. The proper framework is given to you with everything in place. What you have to do is just trust that person and bring it to life. That’s what it was and I just followed this wonderful woman, Shonali, down this journey. We trusted her implicitly and she was watching on everything that was happening. At no point did I feel lost because of her and at no point did I feel that I am out of my depth because of her. Whatever you see is the result of that trust and of the great writing that she and Nilesh (Maniyar), the co-writer, has done. Nilesh has also written the dialogue of the film. Priyanka, did you meet Aditi Chaudhary? PCJ: All of us have met the characters

that we have played in the film but initially, Shonali did not want us meeting the people that we play before we began filming. Any particular reason why? PCJ: She had met them and she derived everything she needed to from them. She and Nilesh had gone in-depth and Aditi and Niren had literally gotten naked in terms of their emotions, experiences and everything when it comes to telling the truth about what their life was all about. I think Shonali did not want us to be swayed in a way where we try to mimic them. Whenever you play a real character, it is more about playing the essence of the character and the same goes with The Sky Is Pink. But I kind of muscled my way in and said that, no, I have to meet her. I flew down to London, and I said, I am not trying to meet Aditi because I want to copy her characteristics or how she uses her hands or anything. I am not a mother. I wanted to understand what it is like to go through an experience like that. I derived tremendously from both Aditi and Shonali because both of them have gone through that experience. Then I made changes in myself from whatever I have understood from them. The Sky Is Pink premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) sometime back and it received great response there. The Chaudharys were also present. How was it watching the film there and receiving a standing ovation in their presence? PCJ: When we were watching the movie, there were 2000 people sitting in the theatre. First and foremost, that itself is like a daunting thing. Then there was Roy Thomson Hall where so many incredible movies have been shown and there’s so much history attached to that venue. Some great world cinema happened in that movie theatre. Also, the best of the best movies are selected at TIFF. There were a lot of nerves and we were all on pins and needles. Throughout the screening, we could hear people laughing, crying and sniffling. So for me, since I had already watched the film, I was listening to people a lot more. But even then, when the credits rolled and the film got over, people just stood up and started clapping and continued doing so and then we stood up. I got really emotional experiencing that. As an artiste, that is what you actually want. You want people to like your work,

you want them to like your effort. It surely was an emotional experience for all of us. And how did Aditi and Niren react to the film? FA: Well, Niren said, it is the best film he has ever seen. So, I would like to believe him, of course, for our own personal reasons. (Everyone laughs) I’ll say this on behalf of every one of us, we were really happy that they were there when the screening happened at TIFF. It is not at all easy for you to expose your life story out to the world. They have exposed it scars and all. It is not just the cushy stuff. And also, you are talking about a time in your life which most people would not want to revisit. You want to just move on. It also will remind them of the time that Aisha was there in their life and take them back to those days. The strength and courage to revisit that, the courage to show the world what they went through while this was going on, the stress that it had on them as a couple and to talk about all that so openly requires a tremendous amount of heart and a tremendous amount of love inside to be able to do that. And after all this, to see people appreciate it the way they did in the theatres, stand up and applaud it for just being so honest, that was absolutely overwhelming. PCJ: It was also special because the audience was not just the people who spoke and understood Hindi. People were reading the subtitles and reacting the same way. There was a very diverse crowd of all kinds of ethnicities. And to see that kind

of diversity reacting in the same manner shows you that cinema transcends languages and cinema transcends borders. And that gave me goosebumps. FA: And their honest emotions are universal. Rohit, you got to share the screen space with two powerhouse performers. Was it daunting initially? RSS: It was very scary. PCJ: Shut up! RSS: Of course, it was scary. PCJ: You did not look scared from any angle. RSS: Please ask Farhan. FA: Ask me? PCJ: He (Farhan) is scary, I am not. (Everyone laughs) RSS: It’s really funny because I had already shot two schedules with them in Mumbai and in London. The scenes we were supposed to do needed me to be emotionally comfortable with Farhan to be able to open up. (Priyanka laughs) RS: And I was petrified of Farhan. Why? FA: I don’t know. RSS: Because he is scary! PCJ: He is intimidating. That is a better word. RSS: But I want to call it scary. FA: One second. You know I am just quiet and if being quiet intimidates somebody that is not my fault. But do you think you are scary? FA: No, not at all. Why would I think I am scary? (Everyone laughs)

No but you always have an opinion about yourself. PCJ: She means to say, do you think people think you are scary? FA: Sometimes when I wake up in the morning and look into the mirror and see my hair is ruffled, that’s scary but otherwise no, I don’t think I am scary. PCJ: Sorry Rohit, we did not mean to come into your conversation. RSS: So what I was saying was that there was one time when I needed to be emotionally comfortable with Farhan. Before this particular scene, I went up to Farhan and I told him that I am petrified of him and that he intimidates me and I don’t know what to do because I really want to be able to perform well in the scene. It was funny because he just laughed about it and said that I should have told this to him on day one and then I would not have had to go through so much trouble. So yes, it was very daunting in the beginning. FA: Then I told him, just go and stand there and do not come and talk to me till the scenes get over. Jab dekho tab! (Everyone laughs) RSS: But yes, then it got better. Then you broke the ice. RSS: Priyanka was great with me from day one. She was fun. FA: What does that mean? I was not great with you? What do you mean by “she was great with me”? PCJ: I am fun only! (Laughs) FA: Fun is different from great. PCJ: Fun is great. RSS: Yes! Fun. She was fun. PCJ: (To Rohit) What do you mean? So, I am not great? RSS: Aree yaar… (Priyanka and Rohit laugh) FA: But there is a difference. I am telling you yaar, I am a silent person on set, I do my own thing, sit on the side and do my crossword and stuff. But everybody feels like I am a snob. PCJ: You got him into trouble, didn’t you? Yes. I am sorry Rohit. FA: No more questions for Rohit! RSS: You used to play Sudoku right? FA: Not Sudoku, I was playing crossword. RS: I have started hating that game. Because every time I saw it on his phone, I couldn’t go up and talk to him. I am sure this must have gone throughout the shoot. FA: Yes, they both were having fun and he was scared of me, yes it was always that way.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas returns to Hindi cinema after three years with The Sky Is Pink. The actress-producer talks to Box Office India about the film, being a producer, husband Nick Jonas, taking up direction and more It has been only three years that we saw you doing a Hindi film but it seems like a lifetime. Everyone expected you to come with pomp, but you surprised us with this beautiful and subtle drama. Was there a thought behind it? I think I’ve reached a point in my life where I want to tell stories that move me. As soon as I read the script, it really touched me and moved me, especially because it was based on a real life family. I think in a cynical world like today, it’s amazing to see stories of families that thrive under extreme pressure instead of succumbing to it. Life is uncertain and you have to live life to the fullest. As an actor, what did you absorb from Aditi Chaudhary? Empathy. The willingness to celebrate life. I think this character has changed my perception and has helped me heal in a lot of ways. Shonali Bose had said in an interview that you had broken down while filming one of the scenes. As an actor, how difficult is it to separate the emotions of the character from yourself? I’m pretty good at separating emotions from my character because I never play Priyanka, I never play myself, I’m always playing a different person. So I try and get under the skin of the character that I’m playing and the emotions that they would feel, but for this particular movie, I had to go into really deep dark places and there were times where I couldn’t separate how I was feeling emotionally. This particular scene, I empathised so much with Shonali, because I kept saying to her I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry you had to go through this, because she lost her son when he was 16. What was your process of approaching this character who grows from being a young girl in love to a mother to someone who has lost her child? I imbibed the character through and through, and being a director’s actor helped me do that. Once you’ve fully absorbed the character, then the transitions come naturally. What prompted you to be associated with this project as a producer too? The story was extremely moving,

substantial, and powerful - and those are the kinds of stories that I love to produce. After reading the script and meeting Shonali, I knew this had to be Purple Pebble Pictures’ first Hindi production. The film got a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival. Tell us how it was being there with Aisha’s parents. It was a humbling experience - I was so overwhelmed with the response. Being in a theatre full of people with so much diversity - these were not people that were just Hindi speaking or people who understood Hindi - but Americans, Canadians and they were reading the subtitles and reacting to the movie. It just goes to show that this movie transcended borders and languages and that was really amazing. Aisha’s mom, Aditi, came up to me and said to me after she finished watching the movie that she felt that Aisha was reborn again because the entire movie is from Aisha’s perspective. It meant so much to me to see the smiles on their faces after seeing the work that we have done How was Nick Jonas’s reaction after he watched the film? Have your inlaws watched it yet? Nick very sweetly held me after the film, and asked if we could Facetime Shonali, as he wanted to tell her that this is the reason we become actors, for films like this. I thought that was extremely sweet and profound. I don’t think my in-laws have watched it yet, but I’m going to arrange a private screening for them as soon as I get back home (US). Playing a mother on screen is not a popular choice among actresses, what kind of convictions should the character have for you so that these norms don’t matter? I’ve played a mother many many times before, in Pyaar Impossible, Bajirao Mastani, Mary Kom… it’s never been a reason for me to choose or not choose my characters. I like to play strong characters, I like to tell stories that I feel are important to be told and that is the reason why it has never mattered to me. I like storytelling, I like playing women that are extremely profound and strong, and Aditi in real life is a ferociously protective mother

and I thought that was incredible. In an interview, you had said that you would want to give a push to stories based on women. Is this decision influenced by the dearth of such stories especially in Hindi cinema? Initially, it was. But off late there have been more women-centric films and stories - but that’s precisely the issue right? You wouldn’t call a good story a male-centric film or a women-centric film. My intention is to produce good stories - and if it restores the balance and makes the number of male and women-centric films equal, then so be it. You had also expressed your desire of directing a film in the future? Did working on a film like The Sky Is Pink and a director like Shonali Bose bring you closer to your decision in any way? Direction is something that makes me nervous because it’s a lot of responsibility. But slowly, I have moved from acting to production and hopefully, I’ll make that (directing films) transition too someday. The film has released not only in India but in other countries as well. Do you think the reach that you have globally will help take the story to a larger audience? I would hope so because besides acting in this movie and producing it, I definitely want to make sure that I create reach for the movie and give it as much flight as I can. After that, every film had its own destiny and I hope that the audience would respond to it the way we feel about it. We think that it’s a very very special movie and an impactful story. A lot has changed in the Hindi film industry since the time your film Jai Gangaajal that released three years back. Do you see any imminent change in the kinds of films that are working? I love the new films that are being made and how people are reacting to them. It’s more about the story itself, and less about the names attached to the film. People are more open to a variety of stories and genres, and filmmakers are also willing to experiment and push the boundaries of what is typically considered to be the norm.

about it and when I met him, I completely froze. It was a really overwhelming experience meeting him because I would be portraying him onscreen. But the first time we properly met, hung out together and spoke for a good time was the day he watched the film at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). Speaking of TIFF, The Sky Is Pink received a standing ovation there. Tell us a bit about your experience there. It was an overwhelming experience because I have never watched a film with 2000 people and there I was watching my own film with so many people. I could not have imagined sitting in an audience with 2000 people ever. It was very exciting for me because that is the first time that I walked the red carpet and people there knew me and my work. I received so much love and that was very humbling. I feel very grateful for the entire experience. We worked really hard on the project. People reacted to the film the way we wanted them to even by reading the subtitles and that was extremely gratifying and rewarding for us. This proves the fact that emotions transcend borders and boundaries. It was not only special because of all the people in theatre but also because the Chaudharys were present there with us at that moment. They said that they felt that we almost brought Aisha back to life. To be part of that entire experience is really humbling. These are the kinds of moments that an artiste needs in their life; they want to push the boundaries. And that is what this journey has been for me.

“I want to tell stories that bring change” Rohit Suresh Saraf is elated with the response that The Sky Is Pink has been receiving. In a conversation with Titas Chowdhury, the actor opens up about his learnings from Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar on set, being overwhelmed by the response the film received at TIFF and more As part of your preparation, did you meet Ishaan Chaudhary on whom your character is based? We were not allowed to the meet the people who we were playing in the film. But I met Ishaan literally for five minutes. The day I met him, we were going to shoot a sequence which was the most difficult one for me in the film. If you have seen the film, you will realise that I am talking about a sequence where I am throwing my bag away at the railway station. I was really nervous about shooting it because it was a make-or-break scene for me. That was the only day when he could come down to London. I was really stressed

We had earlier spoken about the death scene in the film that you were dreading shooting and it emotionally impacted you. How much did you let this character affect you? For me, this entire journey was extremely

immersive. The moment I got this project, I knew that we would have to go all the way. I knew that I could not have held back in that particular scene. And to do that, I had to completely put myself and my heart out there before Shonali (Bose) so that she could have access to that space within me and get the performance out of me that she wanted. I would not say that the scene took a toll on me because my journey with the film has been very cathartic and healing. I have learnt a lot from the project and the kind of experiences that I got from it is something that I needed in my life. People often ask me how I unwind after doing an emotionally heavy film like this. But for me, this process has been a kind of unwinding. I do not need time for unwinding after this project. You had said that it was a dream come true for you to work with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar. Did they share any golden word of advice with you? Both Priyanka and Farhan have had such multi-faceted careers. She is an actor, producer and singer. Farhan is literally everything under the sun; he is a singer, songwriter, actor, producer and director. I have grown up watching their work. I have seen from where they started and where they have taken their career They have had huge experiences. It was a dream come true for me to work with actors like them because I learnt so much from them. With Priyanka, it was that one incident when we were shooting in London when I had met Ishaan. I was very nervous and that is when Priyanka came up to me. She did not tell me something that nobody had ever told me, but it was all about the confidence that she had in me when she spoke to me. She said to me, ‘You are here because you deserve to be here.’ What I basically learnt during that conversation was that self-believe and no ounce of self-doubt is very important. I learnt the same thing from Farhan too. The way he has transformed his body is incredible. Right from the time he started shooting for The Sky Is Pink to now when he is doing Toofan… there has been a huge change. The kind of discipline and the kind of dedication he has towards his craft when he is on set is amazing. There is an abundance of learning that you can get from him. What is next on the plate for you? I have Anurag Basu’s next film titled Ludo. It is an ensemble film. It has four stories which will come together to make one big film. I am going to play one of the principal characters in the film.

Producer of Saand Ki Aankh, Nidhi Parmar, talks to Titas Chowdhury about donning the hat of producer for the first time, collaborating with Anurag Kashyap and her perspective on the ageism debate surrounding the film Saand Ki Aankh marks your debut as producer. What made you start your new journey with this project? The project chose me more than me choosing it. My final goal has always been to be a producer. Tushar (Hiranandani) and I would talk about it a lot. Then Tushar saw the interviews of the dadis in Satyamev Jayate and he immediately felt that this is a project that he wants to make. This happened five years back. He was completely convinced and I wanted to back him. I also knew that we had to develop it alone. I immediately helped him get writers onboard, reach out to the dadis and secure the rights. The first time I met the dadis, I heard their entire story and I was completely sold. I thought that if we are involved in it so much, then I should formally become a producer since we would be putting in money also. It totally made sense to me because by then I was so much invested in the project. The story had become extremely close to my heart. So I left my job and came onboard as a full-time producer. Did you have any creative involvement in the film? The only creative involvement that I had was in supporting Tushar throughout the process. I was very much involved in the music because we started doing the music at the same time as the scripting. It was a very satisfying process. What were your inputs as far as the cast is concerned? I most definitely gave my inputs in the casting process. But by the end of it, none of my inputs mattered. (Laughs) We are very lucky that we got stellar actors like Taapsee (Pannu) and Bhumi (Pednekar). They have been completely committed from the word ‘go’. They are a very strong part of the entire journey and we are very grateful because I believe that everything happens for the best. We cannot think of any other actors who could have done these roles better than them. There is a debate going on about ageism where netizens, including veteran actors like Neena Gupta and Soni Razdan, have raised their voices against the casting

of younger women to play 60-year-old shooters in the film. What do you have to say about that? I really respect both Neenaji and Soniji. They are fantastic artistes and there’s no doubt about it. But it is not really my call. I don’t sit and decide on whether I will get funding if I cast certain actors. The film has to be financially viable. It has to make some finances and there has to be some return on investment. In fact, we did go through older people as well but that didn’t work out. Yes, we didn’t go to Neenaji and Soniji, we didn’t go through everyone in that age because we quickly realised that we’re not going to get funding if we go that route. I don’t think it really matters. The feedback about the cast comes from the audience, right? If the audience goes and sees a film that is based on two ladies and which is headlined by two older women, it would be great. But in the financial sense, investors would give less money to make the film. Why would Tushar and I have any problem working with great artistes like Neenaji, Soniji, Ramyaji (Krishnan) or even Shabanaji (Azmi)? They are amazing people and are great actors. We would be privileged to work with them. But somebody needs to put in the money for that as well. Talking about financial gains, I know people keep giving the example of Badhaai Ho. And I keep saying that people did take home Neenaji and Gajrajji (Rao) but they entered the theatre to watch the film because of Ayushmann (Khurrana).

Saand Ki Aankh is the story of two women. As a female producer, are backing films like this a priority for you? We weren’t consciously told to go for a female-centric subject or a subject on women empowerment. Doing Saand Ki Aankh was a matter of instinct. Tushar and I have a company called Chalk And Cheese Films, which is also producing the film. Both of us need to agree on doing the same film since it is being made under our banner. This is a company that both of us feel very strongly for. Now we are developing other stuff as well and we realised that we tend to gravitate towards inspirational stories. There are so many inspirational stories of great women out there which haven’t been tapped yet. Saand Ki Aankh came to us organically. It is a great wave which is taking place right now because people are accepting female-centric films and they are doing well. It is a good time to be doing this and it is high time that more and more of such films are made. Anurag Kashayp is the creative producer of Saand Ki Aankh. How has the collaboration with him been? It was excellent. I don’t think we could have done it without Anurag. We were running around trying to get funding for the film and we weren’t getting it anywhere. It was Anurag who came onboard and told us to not worry and that he would sort things out for us. And he did! He got us the funding and gave us all the creative freedom. We got to make it the way we wanted to. He has been a tremendous support. The faith and the trust that he has shown is incredible. I hope we do him proud. We kept hounding him for his inputs but he was sitting there and smiling and saying, ‘Tum theek toh kar rahe ho naa! If I don’t agree with something, I will let you know. Baar baar kyun poochte rehte ho?’ He had a lot of faith in Tushar and in the script, which he loved. After he said okay to the script, he didn’t interfere at all. In fact, he used to tell me to not confuse myself between being a producer and the director’s wife. He said to me, ‘You’ve to keep your creative inputs to yourself now that the film has gone on floors. Now it is Tushar’s film.’

Freedom Fighter KASI LEMMONS’S BIOPIC BRINGS THE SAGA OF HARRIET TUBMAN TO THE BIG SCREEN BY KEVIN LALLY

>> She’s a legendary figure in American history, such an icon that the U.S. Treasury has chosen her to be the first person of color to appear on the nation’s currency (in 2028). But how much do we really know about Harriet Tubman? Many know her as a major force in the mid-1800s Underground Railroad, guiding dozens of slaves to freedom after fleeing herself for the safety of Pennsylvania. But did you know that, during the Civil War, she was the first woman to lead an armed expedition, a raid that freed more than 700 slaves?

Focus Features’ Harriet, CYNTHIA ERIVO opening on November 1, is AS HARRIET TUBMAN the long-overdue biopic of Tubman, brought to life in a magnetic performance by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple) in her first lead movie role. The film co-stars Hamilton Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. as abolitionist William Still; Janelle Monáe as free-born ally Marie Buchanon; Joe Alwyn (The Favourite) as Harriet’s young master, and country music star Jennifer Nettles as his mother; Clarke Peters (“The Wire”) and Vanessa Bell Calloway as Harriet’s parents; and Vondie Curtis-Hall as Samuel Green, a real-life Maryland pastor who helped slaves escape. Writer Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans) has been working on the project since the 1990s, and producers Debra Martin Chase and Daniela Taplin Lundberg ultimately turned to Kasi Lemmons to direct the film I learned so much about Harriet Tubman watching this film. I knew and work on the screenplay. Lemmons’s deabout the Underground Railroad, but but feature, Eve’s Bayou (1997), is a landmark there were so many other dimensions in African American cinema for its depiction that I didn’t know. I saw Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple on Broadway, and her performance gave me chills. I was surprised that you gave her the opportunity to sing in the film. Is that based on the real Harriet?

Oh yeah, absolutely. That’s how she communicated. That’s how she called the enslaved people, through song. It was like a coded message—because when the slave owners heard the slaves singing, they thought they were happy. They didn’t suspect that the music could signal an uprising or a call to freedom. It was the way enslaved people communicated—only certain people would understand the message. Tell me about the rapport you had with Cynthia. She’s the key to the success of this film. What kind of a connection did you make?

It was and still is a very deep connection. We had to be that way. Our rapport was very important to us—it’s really how we got through it. We looked in each other’s eyes, we held each other’s hands, we really tried to invoke her together. We talked about it a lot, trying to channel her and access her so that other people could. It was actually the most profound experience I’ve ever had. With Leslie Odom Jr. in the film, you’ve got two of the biggest recent Broadway stars in your movie. Did you find their stage discipline was an asset for you on this project?

I think of them as actors who just happen

to also be able to star in Broadway shows and win Grammys. They’re just really talented people, but when they were on set, it was like directing any actor. All actors are a little bit different, depending on their training and their approach. To me, it’s all directing. I have to believe that for both your black and white actors, it was uncomfortable in a lot of ways to be playing slaves and slave owners. How do you deal with that as a director?

You have a great cinematographer on this project, John Toll [two-time Oscar winner for Braveheart and Legends of the Fall]. How did you land him for this film?

Did you have that audience in mind as you were making it? Were there little touches you added to try to make sure it reached a young crowd?

Well, everybody understands why they’re there, and we rehearse so everyone is comfortable. You cast carefully—you choose people who are there for the right reasons and who are good people and who are uncomfortable—they shouldn’t be too comfortable. So we just discuss it and try to give the characters as much backstory as possible, even the white slave owners, things that actors can relate to.

Well, it’s funny. We were at the Sundance Lab together. I’m a longtime Sundance adviser and John has done the Lab several times. I sat next to him and said, “So, John, what are you working on next?” And he said, “I don’t know.” “Do you think you want to do another big movie or a small movie?” He said, “You know, I think I might try a small movie.” And I said, “So, do you like Harriet Tubman?” The conversation kind of went like that. There was a screening of my movie Eve’s Bayou at Sundance and he watched it, and then he asked for a script.

This is probably the biggest production you’ve ever done. What were the big challenges for you?

Are you and Focus Features doing anything special to make sure this film reaches a young audience?

Just trying to get it all into our schedule and into our budget. And shooting outside, shooting in the woods at night, in the rain,

The mission was to make something that could reach a wide audience. I wrote the role of Walter thinking of the younger audience. That character [a slave hunter turned liberator] is very important to me; he’s played by my son [Henry Hunter Hall]. One thing we were very conscious of was trying to make an adventure movie, trying to keep it exciting, Her life is inherently an adventure story, and we wanted to capture that. How important to you is it that people see Harriet in theaters?

I very much believe in seeing films in theaters. There’s something so immersive about it; it really lets you go on an incredible journey with other people. Super Woman !

As The Warrior Queen Of Jhansi is up for release next month, director Swati Bhise and lead actor Devika Bhise talk to Bhavi Gathani about their film, working with each other, the rich history and heritage of India, how the Hollywood and British film industries look at India as a country and more Swatiji this is your first film as a director. Why did you choose this subject for your first film and how did it all come together? Swati Bhise (SB): It is my first directorial film but I think I have been a director all my life. As a woman performing on stage, you are directing your musicians, you are directing other choreographers or the lighting or the sound and that is part of the training as an Indian classical dancer. You do your fundraising, you do your writing and you do everything. I have done that for so many years. Be it dance, drama or films, I never thought of them as different compartments. Directing for me was very clear. I wasn’t ever confused. For me, this step was very clear cut and simple. The story of the Rani of Jhansi is

universal. That’s why I didn’t have to decide what angle I was supposed to take of the story. I knew which actor I wanted as lead, I knew which story I wanted to tell. When Devika and I were co-writing the script, it was a story of not just the Rani. It was also about the socialeconomic factors that made her, the political situation and life in 1857. I would often tell Devika that Wonder Woman has come out here (Hollywood) but we’ve got our own wonder woman. The Rani of Jhansi always fascinated me because she always was what all women should aspire to be. That is why I wanted to make a film about her, to share her with the world, a global story about a woman, who happens to be Indian. But she is every woman’s fear and every

woman has all these issues in life that she had. They can use her as a guide on how to overcome problems because she was not born with a silver spoon. You can’t make any excuses that she had it easy, she had a husband, she had a son or a brother, this and that… She is an idea and not just a woman. That’s the reason I made this film. Devika, you are a Hollywood actor. Was it challenging portraying the role of a warrior queen like Lakshmibai? Devika Bhise (DB): There were a number of challenges. (Laughs) When we started on this, it was a massive hill to climb and I didn’t know how I was going portray this magnificent glorious queen and ground her in reality at the same time. Languages

were the hardest challenge just because I had to switch between three languages. I really had to be prepared depending on the scene as to which language I was speaking and how I was going to be doing that. Luckily I had a lot of time to do that because pre-production was also taking time. For something like this, you really need to be thinking about it every day for months or even years to get that into your bones. On set, you are working 18 hours a day, you are in every single scene, you are not sleeping enough, and you don’t really have time to learn your lines at that point. So, the prep was very important for this. That took a lot of time. However, for me the horseback riding was the most fun part because I love animals. I love horses and I love riding. I also ended up having to do jumps and it was really fun. This film also taught me the importance of time and patience. Swatiji, did you take any creative liberties making a film based on a real life character? SB: I have to be honest with you here. I suffer from OCD. I am not able to take liberties. In fact, everyone kept saying to me, ‘You know, you don’t have to stick completely to the truth.’ And I said I would like to because all my life has been history. I have studied Indian history and British history in both school and college and even later. That is the only thing that I have been studying. What was hard was, knowing far too much about something and then wondering how to put it out in 104 minutes. The frustration for me is actually never being happy and satisfied enough for the number of elements I add to the story. Everyone said to me, ‘You are not making a documentary, stop going on and on with the history part’. But I wanted to share so much what an average person doesn’t know. While doing the research, I asked a few people in North India where she was born and they would say Jhansi. They don’t even know that she is a Maharashtrian. So, most people do know who she is. But beyond the fact that she was from Jhansi and she was a warrior, they have no idea

about other important details; they don’t know that she spoke Marathi or they don’t know that she ever wore a nine yard sari. There are a lot of things that we are losing. I just wanted every aspect of her brought in. The Warrior Queen Of Jhansi has been screened at some of the film festivals. What sort of response did you get there? DB: Very positive. In Vancouver Film Festival, we won the award for Best Social Empowered Film On Women. SB: And it was our first public screening. I actually was quite shocked because everyone was sobbing in the audience. Then it was also showed at the Shanghai Film Festival and I believe everyone enjoyed it. In New York, we witnessed a wonderful reaction at the Asia Society. I was very scared that this is a hardcore New York audience who don’t even crack a smile for anything. But we both were very pleased with their response because that particular, very educated audience loved the film and gave us a standing ovation. I just hope everyone likes this film. There was a time when filmmakers used to make films that were language and region-specific. But now we are seeing that language and other cultural barriers are blurring. What do you think is the reason for this change? DB: I think we are in a new phase as far as making movies is concerned. We are in a globalised world where we have platforms like Instagram and Facebook where you can connect with the world. It is incredible and it is also the reason why people have started making movies like this. People are also very open to different dialects and different languages spoken just naturally throughout. Also, in Hollywood, there are a very few movies that are about India in general. I think this is a totally different kind of movie which is telling the rich history of India and talking about this iconic warrior who actually existed and no one in America knows about her. SB: Or in London. DB: Yes, or London. I think it will just widen the reach of knowing about India and Indian history and not just recognsing Indian films and India with just a film like Slumdog Millionaire that won the Oscar. SB: See, I loved these movies… Slumdog Millionaire and Monsoon Wedding are all great movies. But living as an Indian in two countries, I always resented America looking at my country as a poor country. I have always been like a spitfire talking about it because everything that sells is about our poverty. Have you ever seen the great heritage of India? We are in general not good in doing any PR about ourselves, our country. We just don’t know how to package anything. So we have always

packaged out is our poverty and slums and rape. I am not saying nothing exists but what about the greatness of India? What about our beautiful history and culture and heritage? Tell me the last time a Hollywood film or a British film on an Indian character has been made with an Indian woman as lead? We have so many powerful women who have brought a change in our country but we do not have them out in the global world. That is one of the regrets. This is a story that Indians are familiar with and it has been told many times in different forms. You are also releasing this film in US where the audiences are completely different and do not know who Lakshmibai was. What do you expect from the audience when they watch this film? SB: I would hope that the Indian audience looks at what kind of films we need to make to bring out our stories for a global audience. They understand the style that it is made in which is, we have to keep it totally realistic. If I put a song in it then I don’t think anyone in America would really take it that seriously because it’s about the Rani. DB: We also tried to make everything as natural as possible. I had applied the most basic makeup like lipstick and kajal. There was no eyeshadow or contour or anything. Coming back to what I was saying, I am hoping that the Indian audience enjoys it from a historical perspective and not just their Rani. They should see what their rani was up against. She was up against the East India Company and not the British Raaj. The British Raaj came in because she destroyed the East India Company. So she did achieve something. Our trailer has around eight million outreach on social media and I am enjoying the comments especially even from the Indian audience who are saying, ‘Aree what did she do? She took a lot of people and fought and died and that’s the end.’ I am hoping they can see what she did too. This film discusses about what she achieved and how 90 years later too you need so many people along the way to help you get your ultimate freedom.

Show As MX Original Series, Hello Mini, a horror-thriller, is now streaming, actors Anuja Joshi and Gaurav Chopra talk to Manisha Karki about the adaptation of the series from the book and their respective roles Hello Mini is based on the Stranger Trilogy books. Did both of you read it before beginning the shoot of the series? Anuja Joshi (AJ): I have read all the three books. Even though season one is based on the first book, Marry Me, Stranger, it was important for me to understand Rivanah’s (Bannerjee) journey all the way through the three series because it would have been difficult for me to have partial information so I read all the three books while doing this series. I read it in three days. Gaurav Chopra (GC): Good job! I only read the first one. My character is not there in the book. This is the surprise in the show. This is Goldie Behl’s idea. It’s a suspense drama, a mystery and for everyone who has read the book, there is nothing to look forward in the show. You would know everything. You would know what happens to the characters and so they wanted to add this tadka in the show and that’s what I am trying to do. Anuja, Hello Mini is a horror thriller. In a genre like this more than the dialogue, you have to convince the audience with your body language, with your expressions. Was it taxing? AJ: I don’t think sitting in an office with scripts is going to get you the body language that is necessary for such a series. One of the biggest lessons I learnt from this shoot is that it is very exhausting to be terrified all the time. As actors we use everything be it our words, body or expressions but fear, terror, horror, all these things can be pretty exhausting to enact. It was a game of stamina for me especially because

I was shooting quite frequently but my director Faruk Kabir was pretty amazing. He made sure that I was taking breaks, conserving energy, so when we had the take I can go all out. Gaurav, we can clearly see the kind of character Anuja is playing but there is not much shown about your character in the trailer. Can you shed some light on it? GC: My preparation for the character was different. This was a character who was not there in the book and then we had to still make sure that every time he came on screen, he was creating an impact. It seemed like it was a bit of a responsibility to make sure that every time there was a scene, there was something special because that’s the purpose of the character that has been added. But at the same time we also had the liberty to interpret it the way we wanted to since there is no reference of the character in the book. I sort of actually thought about the approach and the internalisation of it. Her (Anuja) process was way more physical than mine because of all the strong reactions she had to give to what all was happening with her. However, my process was a lot more internal and so I thought it needed to be about power as an industrialist. He needed to look like a self-made, very successful person. He is very direct. He knows what he wants. He is very honest. Anuja, this is your first web series. Prior to this you have done a couple of short films. What was it about the story that made you say yes? AJ: The fact that it was based on a book.

I think that is such an exciting thing for an actor to take on. I am such a big fan of adaptations in films and television any way be it Harry Potter or Game Of Thrones; it is so incredible to see something actually come to life from the pages. It was obviously an honour that the makers took a chance on me and they saw the ability in me to potentially creating this character well. I just jumped at the opportunity. Gaurav, you have been on all the platforms whether it is films, television or web. According to you, how important is the web space for an actor in terms of exploring content as well as getting new opportunities? GC: I think we all became actors because we want to explore new things. We wanted to be other than the people that we were and live multiple lives. There comes a stage in an actor’s life when if you are considered successful, then the same roles keep coming back to you. That’s because the industry sees you as somebody who will deliver with these roles. If you were to keep saying yes to that, because you also feel comfortable in that zone and you know that if I do this, the audience is going to like it, all of that sounds so good. But you need to get out of that comfort zone or else you will become limited. Thankfully, the digital platform has offered me roles that are dramatically different. Last couple of years has been just that, trying to be different. The digital space in India specifically has brought in so many new avenues for so many people, such great opportunities and I think it’s the best time for the audience.

his experience of working with Neha Kakkar, his collaboration with T-series and more

W

ith his recent single Wah wai wahh crossing 16 million views, Sukh-E is on cloud nine. “I am feeling great. I have worked hard a lot. It was my dream project because working with Neha is like everyone’s dream. So I am very happy,” he says. Talking about how the idea of the song came about, the singer says, “I did the music of the song as well. I was in the studio and I created a beat and Jaani who has written this song was also there. He wrote a line that we all started singing. We created a scratch, took a review and everyone liked it.” This is the first time that Sukh-E has collaborated with Neha Kakkar. Praising Kakkar, he says, “She was so busy but she gave her time for the video shoot, which we shot in 24 hours. We shot the whole song in really hot weather. Looking at the song, all this doesn’t show and that was a big achievement for us. It was

great working with Neha. She gives 100 per cent to her work and I have learned a lot from her.” What does he have to say about his long association with T series? “T-Series is more like a family. I am never tensed when I work with them

because they manage everything. They do the promotions and all very well,” says Sukh-E. The singer is yet to lend his voice for a Bollywood film. But he hopes that he can work with Akshay Kumar someday as he is a diehard fan of the actor. When asked about how he would cope with singing for other composers, Sukh-E says, “It’s a challenge. But life is all about challenges and the more you meet different people, the more you learn something new. So there are seniors in our industry and I’m just gathering a lot of knowledge and I think I will use it one day.” He says that he has a busy schedule ahead. “There are many collaborations coming up. I am producing songs for other artistes. I always try things that are out of the box. I’m working with Divine and also working with Raftaar again on something new,” he concludes.

ixerr is the latest series on ALTBalaji and ZEE5 platforms. The thriller revolves around a suspended ATS officer from Delhi who is drawn into the big bad world of the Mumbai mafia. He becomes a fixer for the rich and famous, solving their complicated illegal matters. The story begins in Mumbai with Jayveer Maalik’s voiceover who introduces himself as a fixer, who sorts the problems of the rich and famous. Suddenly he is shot and taken to the hospital. There is an attack on his life at the hospital and before we know what is happening, Maalik takes us into his past. In flashback, we see that Maalik is an ATS officer from Delhi. While trying to apprehend a dangerous criminal, he ends up shooting a pregnant woman.

This results in his suspension from the force. Circumstances force him to take on the job of a fixer. A meeting with a powerful businessman, Brijnath Dalmiya results in Maalik getting deeply involved in this world of corrupt money. He helps Dalmiya in getting an actress named Ahana out of his son’s life. Maalik succeeds and this lands him his next job with a film producer. During this assignment, he stumbles into a case of the murder of a spiritual guru. The guru’s dark past becomes an opportunity for Maalik to make more money. With every case he solves, Maalik adds an enemy to his list. As the story unfolds, there are many more twists and turns. How Maalik solves the cases, who is the person who tried to kill him, all that unfolds in the series as we go forward. The plotline is interesting and there are hardly any dull moments. The characters are well-defined and the suspense element is maintained well throughout. Breaking of the fourth wall in the narrative is used well. Though this is a fast-paced action thriller, there

is enough tongue-in-cheek humour in the dialogue. Shabir Ahluwalia impresses as Jayveer Maalik. He has the swag that is needed for the part and of course, his humour is spot on. Tigmanshu Dhulia who plays Maalik’s superior has some of the best lines. He plays his part well and is a delight to watch. Isha Koppikar as Jayanti Javdekar has a powerful role. There are many shades to her and as the story unfolds, she unravels her personality as well. Mahie Gill as Jayveer’s wife, Kesar gives the series its oomph factor. There are times when she does seem a bit loud but she does a decent job. Varun Badola as Brijnath Dalmia is quite good. Verdict: Entertaining Rating: ***
