Hrithik Roshan Action is not my comfort zone but I think I have to admit that I look good when I do action so unfortunately, I have to keep doing it for my fans, they really enjoy it. The kind of feedback I get when I do an action film that has the aesthetics of people like Kabir in WAR or Aryan from Dhoom it always works and I get instant feedback so damn it I have to do more of this!

I was nervous, excited and anxious to hear what he has to say. I was like a mixed bag of emotions when I came on set. I gave my hundred per cent to every shot. When you are dancing with the ‘God of Dance’, it is tough to look anywhere else and I had to constantly be on my toes.

Siddharth Anand You need to be confident of your product, that people will come and watch your films. If you look back at the last two to three years, all the eventful films have failed and all the smaller films with good content have worked. Their first day numbers were not even in double digits but their lifetime collections are in triple digits. A good film will eventually finds its audience.

Vikram Bhatt When you are actually directing a horror film on the set, it’s very different because there is no dialogue. There is just the lighting and the camera and you’re taking shots. The crew really finds it boring because you are just working and working and working. But you need to keep the final shape of the film in mind when you’re shooting. In a horror film, everything is done in post production. That’s the biggest challenge.

ou do not watch Siddharth Anand’s WAR, you experience it. The action-thriller redefines the genre and is quite the answer to the West as far as the treatment and the aesthetics are concerned. Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s jugalbandi, be it in dance or combat, death-defying stunts, an incredible helicopter fight and picturesque locations sums up WAR in just a few words. It is all things cool, slick and stylish. The film begins with Kabir, a senior and credible but now rogue spy at an Indian intelligence agency, ambushing and shooting down a senior analyst named VK Naidu under the pretext of killing Fareed Haqqani, a notorious terrorist and ‘jihad salesman’. A few scenes later, enters Khalid, an earnest employee of the espionage system who wants to be mentored by Kabir. Khalid’s father, Rehmani, was a traitor who committed atrocities on the Indian intelligence. After much deliberation, Kabir decides to mentor Khalid and their team flies off to Iraq to bring Basseer Haseeb, another terrorist and a shabby version of Khal Drogo from Game Of Thrones, down to his knees, so that they can reach out to Rizwan Ilyasi, India’s biggest threat. What happens thereafter and how a cat and mouse chase turns into a story of betrayal and gore forms the crux of the film. WAR is replete with twists and turns. But this is exactly where the gorgeous film, mounted on a massive production scale, goes slightly awry. The writers have penned a screenplay that lacks cliffhangers and is largely predictable. However, they have tried to incorporate ample edge-of-the-seat moments that do leave an impact because of Anand’s direction. Dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala

walks the tight rope diligently and prevents jingoism in a film like this that talks about love and sacrifice for the motherland a bunch of times. At 156 minutes, WAR might seem like a long saga. But thanks to editor Aarif Sheikh, the film is crisp. Even the lengthy action sequences such as Kabir and Khalid’s bike chase sequence in the narrow lanes of Portugal, a rare combat sequence inside a helicopter atop a glacier, a stylised car chase on a frozen lake in the Arctic Circle and the final fight between the protagonists in a Game Of Thrones’ Red Keep style lavish setting feel less. The way these scenes have been shot and incorporated in the film keeps you hooked throughout. WAR abounds in flashbacks and jump cuts and though they might prevent you from keeping a track on the flow of events, you will eventually be absorbed into the world, the lives and the times of Kabir and Khalid and you won’t complain. Music is one of the strongest links in any film helmed by Anand. And WAR is no exception. The makers have kept their focus solely on the narrative and have refrained from using too many songs that might disrupt the course of the story. But what wins the heart is the background score. When Kabir and Khalid are battling it out in all their glory, it is the background music that adds to the excitement and the drama and makes you root for more combat and chase sequences. Cinematographer Benjamin Jasper’s lens deserves a loud applause for making WAR an opulent cinematic experience. The aerial views of the colourful houses in Marrakech, the brown landscapes of Tikrit and the turquoise waters of Italy have been captured spectacularly. Kabir and Khalid’s slow-motion shots are captivating and give them a larger-thanlife quality. What sets WAR apart from other action-thrillers is its never-seen-before-

in-Bollywood stunts. With action directors Paul Jennings, Oh Sea Young, Parvez Shaikh and Franz Spilhauz spearheading the ship, we get to see Roshan and Shroff pushing the envelope and indulging in some jaw-dropping action sequences. WAR is high on aspiration and Dhoom-esque vibes. The protagonists are like phoenixes rising from ashes (blood, here). They can fly. They can survive TTX and knives passing through them. You might not be able to resonate with these larger-than-life heroes but you will find yourself clapping, hooting and rooting for them and here lies the success of the film. It can be defined as a rhapsody. It makes for an unusual and interesting fusion between true-blue Bollywood and Mission Impossible style shots and sequences. All action and spy thriller lovers, do not miss out on the opening credits. The film belongs to Roshan. His Kabir is unapologetic, charming and no nonsense and he plays him with aplomb. Shroff’s Khalid is earnest and he plays his part with honesty. It will not be wrong to say that this is his strongest performance till date. It is sheer joy to watch the duo perform and fight each other. Their chemistry is impressive and they deserve another film together. Vaani Kapoor as Naina plays her part well but has nothing much to do. Ashutosh Rana is good as usual but we wish his character had more to do. Anupriya Goenka delivers an impressive act. Dipannita Sharma Atwal in a cameo is wasted. Verdict: Blockbuster! Stars: ***1/2

eriod dramas, be it historical or fictional, have takers in every generation and film industries across the world. Hollywood has given us films like Troy, Gladiator and the Lord Of The Rings series in this genre. For that matter even superhero movies and web series like Game Of Thrones more or less fall in the category of the larger-than-life costume dramas. Indian cinema also has had its fair share of period dramas. Recent historical films like Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi and Kesari have brought back the flavour of films based on India and its freedom struggle. Then we have the Baahubali franchise that proved that costume dramas made on a huge scale can rake in massive numbers when a good story coupled with cutting edge VFX is being told. No longer are the raja-rani stories just for the bygone era. Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy banks on all of these factors and the real-life success stories to bring to the Indian audience the story of the first freedom fighter of India. Defying death right from his birth, Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy is moved by the plight of his people at the hands of the British. Though his family rules the land and is provided pension by the East India Company, Narasimha Reddy finds in his heart the desire to fight atrocities. His Guru Gosayi Venkanna appreciates his ferocity but makes him realise that this is not a war he can win alone and that he will need to ignite the fire that is within him as well as his people. Thus begins his long arduous journey to prepare himself for what would become the purpose of his life and death. In his cause he meets Laxmi, a devadasi and dancer. They fall in love

with each other but circumstances separate them. He continuous his marital life with Siddhamma, whom he had married as a child while Laxmi goes on to spread the stories of Narasimha’s valour and his fight for freedom through her song and dance performances. Narasimha Reddy finds several friends and traitors (from expected and unexpected quarters) as he eliminates hundreds and thousands of British soldiers. Veera Reddy, Avaku Raju and Raja Paandi stay by his side in life and death. Narasimha Reddy is finally captured by the British and tried in court for murder and robbery. He is punished to be hanged till death. In telling of the story of this not muchknown first freedom fighter of India, the writers have taken some creative liberties so that the narrative of the film matches the persona of Megastar Chiranjeevi. As a result we have an exciting story but which seems more of that of a superhero rather than a freedom fighter. There are a lot of dramatic scenes liberally strewn with chest-thumping dialogue. This can be excused given that this the story that sets the tone for a freedom struggle that lasted 100 years. One of the biggest drawbacks of watching a dubbed film is that sometimes the impact of the dialogue is lost in translation in trying to match the lip sync of the actors. The film does suffer from that to some extent. The camera work by R Rathnavelu is top notch. He captures the grandeur of every frame, especially the fight sequences. Here the credit also goes to the action directors who have choreographed some amazing scenes. The music doesn’t add much to the film, except for the title track. At nearly three hours, a bit of editing would have worked wonders for the film. The slow-motion shots are great to watch, but when used repeatedly, tend to get a bit tedious. All the above-mentioned flaws are more or less negated by the towering

presence of Chiranjeevi. The actor defies his age to perform the most amazing action sequences. His agility is enviable. And of course, there is no question that he is still a powerful actor with a charismatic screen presence. His eyes show love, passion and anger so effectively that it is mesmerising. Sadly the Hindi dubbed version does not have the power of his voice, which would have definitely taken his performance several notches higher. Of the remaining cast, Jagapathi Babu as Veera Reddy, Kichcha Sudeepa as Avuku Raju and Tamannaah Bhatia as Laxmi have the meatiest parts. Jagapathi Babu has one of the most layered characters in the story, and is quite a joy to see him underplay the role so well. Sudeepa is a treat to watch. His frenemity with Narasimha Reddy is one of the exciting plot points of the film. Tamannaah has a good screen presence and does a good job. Nayanthara as Siddhamma has her moments, but she gets a rather raw deal. If only the writing had delved a bit more on her character and less on making Narasimha Reddy into a demi-God, the Hindi-speaking audience could have experienced her acting chops. Vijay Sethupathi as Raja Paandi is also totally wasted. Of course, he does his part well, but sadly, he doesn’t have much to do. Amitabh Bachchan makes a cameo appearance as Guru Gosayi Venkanna. Though he is there in just a couple of scenes, when he talks you listen. Another cameo is that of Anushka Shetty. As Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi she does a decent job. Verdict: A laudable effort Stars: ****

he Manoj Bajpayee starrer The Family Man, an Amazon Prime Original, began streaming sometime back. The story of a middle-class man who secretly works for TASC has sent OTT viewers into a tizzy because of its fresh content and unique treatment. Those who have finished watching the series are already aware that it will be revived for a second season. But not many know that the makers, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK had been simultaneously shooting for the second season while filming the first. We have learnt that 50 percent of season two has already been shot. The remaining portions will be shot early next year. Well, we definitely are looking forward to what The Family Man 2 has in store for us!

here’s good news for Chris Hemsworth fans in India! A little birdie tells us that the Australian hunk is set to return to India to finish the patchwork of Dhaka, the Netflix project he had been working on. The cast and crew of the thriller shot in parts of Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the last quarter of 2018. Hemsworth aka Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be landing in India next month and he will be joined by Randeep Hooda for the last leg of the shoot. It would be interesting to see what talented names like Hemsworth, Hooda, Manoj Bajpayee and Pankaj Tripathi bring to the table!

First Arjun, Now Jayeshbhai

ijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey rose to fame with Arjun Reddy. While there are ample speculations about Deverakonda making his debut in the Hindi film industry, let us tell you that Pandey has also caught the attention of a major Bollywood production house. The young star has been spotted at Yash Raj Films a number of times over the past few months. And now a source tells us that she has reportedly been roped in to play the female lead in the Ranveer Singh starrer Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Like Singh, whether Pandey will also play a Gujarati in the film is still not known. An official confirmation is awaited.

A

few months after kick-starting the prep and training for Saina, Shraddha Kapoor made an exit. All speculations related to the project being put on the backburner were put to rest when Parineeti Chopra came aboard the biopic based on the life of badminton champion Saina Nehwal. And now a source close to the film says that after training hard to slip under the skin of the player, Chopra is all set to begin shooting for the film post Dussehra. The first schedule will take place in Mumbai over a period of 20-30 days. The makers are reportedly eyeing a 2020 release for the film.

ews surrounding the announcement of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 might be getting mixed response from fans of the first installment. But there sure is a lot of curiosity about the cast of the film. While the makers have already confirmed Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani as the lead cast, a source tells us that the film will also star a senior actress. Much like Bhool Bhulaiyaa that had Vidya Balan and Ameesha Patel, the second installment will have two actresses but this time their dynamic will be different vis-a-vis the first part. While we get you more information on the name of this actress, put on your thinking caps to make your guesses!

Hrithik Roshan in a candid conversation with Anita Britto and Titas Chowdhury shares how the success of Super 30 and now WAR has put him back in the spotlight, why he isn’t interested in doing a dance film despite those amazing moves, his preferred genres and what he learnt while working with Tiger Shroff

Anita Britto (AB): Congratulations on the success of Super 30. Were you expecting the kind of response the film received? Hrithik Roshan (HR): I was hoping for it for sure because I felt very strongly about that film, in fact I felt the most for that film than any other film that I have done. So it was really important for me, for my instincts to be reaffirmed, it was a very important success. It would have further strengthened or broken my faith in my instincts because I have had such strong instincts about this character (Anand Kumar) and the film. A failure would have shaken me up, but gladly it did not and made me feel that my instincts were still at the right place. It was very powerful and encouraging. AB: Do you think the success of Super 30 will reflect on WAR that released recently? HR: I don’t know but it definitely has given me encouragement, it has strengthened my resolve a little bit more, so yeah it has definitely helped in many positive ways. How it will help in WAR, I don’t know. Maybe I will get a few extra compliments if people like the contrast between the Bihari mood and the Kabir mood. Apart from that, WAR will stand on its own two feet. If it’s a good film it will run, if not it won’t. We shall see. Titas Chowdhury (TC): But, were you always confident about WAR considering it is in your comfort zone? HR: My comfort zone… I think playing Anand sir in Super 30, playing that mentally challenged kid in Koi... Mil Gaya comes more naturally to me than this sexy guy. Playing a sexy guy requires a lot of effort, he is also there in me somewhere but he appears very seldom and on most days he disappears. I can’t find him. AB: Tiger Shroff has always mentioned that you are his mentor and he looks up to you. So do you think WAR was the right film for you two to come together? HR: There could not have been a better and more correct and appropriate film than this for someone like Tiger and me to come together. It was like tailor-made for us...

does action? HR: The process that he applies, the hard work that he puts in reminded me of how hard I worked for my first film. It is commendable the way he has his discipline in place. The amount of work he puts in, it’s absolutely incredible. It is very inspiring for me to watch the way he works now, it reignited that same passion inside me as well. It’s been 19 years now that I have been doing this. When I did this film, I realised that somewhere I have become more relaxed with the things I do, which is also a good thing but being relaxed can slowly become lazy, complacent and also stagnant. Tiger has come into the environment of my work life at the right time because it has put me on my guard and that is a good thing. AB: The audience has been eagerly waiting to see a dance-off between you and Tiger in WAR... HR: It is not a dance-off. I don’t think I would have liked doing that because there is a celebration of dance; I wanted it to be that and not a dance-off. I don’t think that would have looked dignified or good from Tiger’s point of view or mine. We have enjoyed dancing to Jai jai Shivshankar, which is why even the audience is enjoying it so much. You can love both at the same time without resorting to comparison. Tiger is the easiest co-star to work with. He is a director’s actor and he is extremely professional. I don’t think there was even one day or one moment that he has arrived late or made me wait even for 30 seconds more, which of course he can’t say the same about me (laughs), but I think that much is allowed. He is an incredible delight to work with. AB: Is it true that you directed him in a few scenes of the film? HR: I think the kind of direction that we are talking about happens from actor to actor in every film I have been part of. I have been infused by a certain thought of another actor and I have loved it. This is what happened here. And it happens both ways.

TC: Is it true that you stressed on having Tiger in the film? HR: Yeah! I was insistent. I knew that this film would not be made if Tiger had said no to it. They might have had to go to another actor, but I probably wouldn’t have done the film.

TC: Your last film with Siddharth Anand was Bang Bang!, which also coincidentally released on October 2 and it is happened again this year, is it strategy or serendipity? HR: It just so happens that we were looking for a date and October 2 is a date we already have an association with and it just happened to fall into place. Yeah, we had to rush a little bit but we made it to the date.

AB: While shooting together did you see yourself in Tiger especially in the way he

how has Siddharth upped his game with this film? HR: One thing I can be certain of is that in this film the action is of the kind that has not been seen before. And Siddharth has upped his game in every single way. Be it the background score of the film, the action, the pace of this film, the look, the feel, the color or the aesthetics of this film... Everything is greater and better than anything else. AB: After quite some time you did two back-to-back films. Was it a conscious decision? HR: Not really, it just looks like back-toback projects but Super 30 got delayed by six months and that is why we are seeing it back-to-back. But, it’s good for me and my fans. They will complain less for a while now. (Laughs) AB: But, do you think action is your comfort zone? HR: Not really, it’s not my comfort zone but I think I have to admit that I look good when I do action so unfortunately, I have to keep doing it for my fans, they really enjoy it. The kind of feedback I get when I do an action film that has the aesthetics of people like Kabir in WAR or Aryan from Dhoom 2, it always works and I get instant feedback. So damn it I have to do more of this! AB: Have you ever thought of doing an out-and-out dance film? HR: Not really, I don’t think I am interested in that. I don’t consider myself a dancer or should I say, it is not my mainstream. I like playing with my emotions, so if a dance film comes along, which also has emotional content then I’ll consider it. AB: When it’s a two-hero film, the actors normally promote the film together, but here we saw both you and Tiger promoting the film separately. HR: This was a promotional strategy, I think Aditya (Chopra) wanted to make sure if the fans want to see us together, it should only be in the film. It’s a subconscious layer but he didn’t want to spoil that visual at all. If people want to see us together it should only be on the big screen, that was the thought. AB: We have heard that you have signed the Satte Pe Satta remake, can you shed some light on that? HR: I am going to decide about that as soon as I am done with WAR. I have not signed the film yet and if and when I do, I will announce it. AB: What about Krrish 4? HR: My dad is back to his best health and I think we are going to restart that very soon.

Director of WAR, Siddharth Anand and lead actor, Tiger Shroff talk to Bhakti Mehta about the action-thriller, working with Hrithik Roshan and the significance of getting a solo Hindi release Siddharth, your last film Bang Bang! released on October 2 five years ago and now WAR released on the same day. Is October lucky for you? Siddharth Anand (SA): I hope so! Fingers crossed! It is serendipity. When we announced WAR on September 27, 2017 we mentioned January 26, 2019 as the release date. But due to some delays in Hrithik’s (Roshan) film, Super 30, our date got pushed to October 2, 2019. The next date after January 26 that we found suitable was October 2. In fact, Anjaana Anjaani also came out on October 1, 2010. So my last three releases have been around or on October 2. Tiger Shroff (TS): Siddharth, you have

had a release every five years, right? SA: Yes! I am worse than the leap year. (Laughs) Tiger, in a recent interview to us Hrithik had said that he would not have done WAR without you. TS: Is that true? SA: All of us are on the same boat. Once you watch the film, you will understand how critical Tiger’s casting is to Khalid’s character. It is empirical. If he did not do the film, we would have to shift the film to another year or time or era when Tiger would say ‘yes’ to us. TS: I think you are being extremely generous. The luck is completely mine. This coming from Hrithik sir, Siddharth sir and Adi (Aditya Chopra) sir means a lot to

me. It puts a certain pressure on me as well to give them back (all the love) and assure them that they were not wrong in casting me. Action films are a popular genre worldwide. When you are working with two of the biggest action heroes of the country, does that put a pressure on you to meet sky-high expectations, Siddharth? SA: I think that makes it easier. In fact, taking two stars who are known for comedy and then making them do action is worse. Making a film with Hrithik and Tiger is not pressure. Somewhere it takes that pressure off you because you can rely on their box office appeal, their talent and skills to guide you through.

Tiger, everyone knows that you are a big fan of Hrithik Roshan. Take us back to the first day and scene that you shot with him. TS: I am probably his biggest fan. I can challenge any fan. (Laughs) I was very, very nervous on my first day. Luckily it was a shot where we were standing face-toface and it was not some takkar ka scene. We were standing next to each other. I did not even look at him once. I was just giving that shot as if it was just another Tiger Shroff film. I was not even thinking that there is this big star standing next to me. After that shot when he saw the frame, he complimented it. He told that it was looking good. Post that, things got easier, I submitted to him and I managed to perform with him to the best of my ability. One of the biggest things that everyone is looking forward to is the dance-off between you and Hrithik. How was that experience? Were you nervous? TS: For me, he’s the reason I started dancing in the first place and he was dancing with me in the same frame. What more could I have asked for? I was nervous, excited and anxious to hear what he has to say. I was like a mixed bag of emotions when I came on set. I gave my hundred per cent to every shot. When you are dancing with the ‘God of Dance’, it is tough to look anywhere else and I had to constantly be on my toes. Siddharth, music has been a big part of your films. The songs of WAR have become chartbusters. How involved were you in the making of the music and how imperative it is to the storyline? SA: Completely imperative! Music, whether it was the soundtrack or the background score, is really critical to my films. I am a big pain to my composers, whether it is the person who composes the BGM or Vishal and Shekhar. Vishal and Shekhar have composed for all my films. I am a nightmare for them. Why so? SA: I am not so easy to convince; I do

not accept songs easily. You know it is such a huge process! When they know that I am coming to them with a film, they start practicing yoga. (Laughs) It is tough making good music because you have to second guess what millions of people will like; it is not just about what you like and what you think is good music. Your music needs to have the potential to be popular as well. I am not an indulgent filmmaker. I make commercial films and commercial music. So I look out for what the taste of the audience is going to be one year later. Ghungroo is creating quite a buzz. It is our personal favourite song from the film. SA: Thank you. I am glad. You have good taste. (Laughs) There is a myth that a heroine does not have much to do in hardcore action films. Does WAR intend to change that? SA: If you have watched my films, you will notice that women have consistently played very strong characters in them. That comes from my personal life. I don’t look at women as objects of glamour to accentuate my screen. They must be pivotal to the plot and they must have a voice. That is the kind of ethos I have. Vaani (Kapoor) is playing a very, very significant part in the film. She is the pivot of the film. Tiger, you have learnt martial arts and have done many action films in the past. But did you have to unlearn something or learn something new to play your part in this film? TS: The audiences have seen quite a bit of me in terms of action and dance. Sid sir convinced me to do something new. He told me that people have seen my strengths and I should try and break that mould. It is all about presenting a new package. I think we have been quite successful in doing so. Once you see the film, you will realise that there is a variety of action sequences and you will see a new me and even Hrithik sir for that matter. Both of us have pushed

ourselves to our extreme ends and have tried to introduce something new. The industry is in a situation now where Fridays are crammed and it is difficult to get a solo release. WAR is the only Hindi film to release on October 2. Is it reassuring? TS: An ideal situation would be to get a solo release. It is crucial. But you rightly said that there is so much content nowadays that we struggle to find dates. People book dates two to three years in advance. Having said that, ours is a heavenly situation. We have seen instances where all films have flourished despite releasing together. Bang Bang! came with Haider and both the films flourished. There is an audience for every film. We, as artistes and filmmakers, put so much into our films that it would be unfair to say, ‘Hope our film works and somebody else’s doesn’t.’ Everybody should get their due. SA: It is important to get a solo release but it is not imperative. There is enough room for films to do well. You need to be confident of your product, that people will come and watch your films. If you look back at the last two to three years, all the eventful films have failed and all the smaller films with good content have worked. Their first day numbers were not even in double digits but their lifetime collections are in triple digits. A good film will eventually find its audience. But it is important for a tent pole film like ours to start strong. Ideally, we would have preferred a solo release, but three films from other industries (Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Joker and Gumnaami) are also coming with us. Somewhere the audience does have a choice. What we want is for them to come and watch our film and say that it is good. If I tell you that it is a good film, you will automatically go to watch it. We are not chasing big numbers; we are just chasing a positive word-of-mouth.

A Spooky Affair! Team Ghost - Director Vikram Bhatt and lead actors Sanaya Irani and Shivam Bhaargava, talk to Manisha Karki about the making of the film, the eerie experience while shooting and what sets it apart from other horror films Vikram, you have mastered the art when it comes to horror films and you always come up with something new. How did the idea of this Ghost come about? Vikram Bhatt (VB): All the films that I have made in this genre have been love stories or period horror films like 1920. This is the first time I’ve made something based on a true story. I was researching something and I came across this case called ‘the devil made me do it’ case. It was about a man called Arne Johnson, who apparently murdered his landlord. And then his defence in court was that ‘I didn’t do it. The devil made me do it. I was possessed.’ Of course, the judge threw out the case because he found it ridiculous. But I didn’t find it ridiculous because I love spirits. So I

thought it was a fascinating idea. What if someone is framed for murder and the spirit has actually done it. How are you going to prove in court? This whole the legal system versus supernatural was fascinating. And that’s why Ghost is really different than what I’ve made for. Sanaya and Shivam, how did you come on board for the film? What was your reaction when you heard the plot and about your character? Sanaya Irani (SI): When I was reading it I was like, ‘what’s the issue with her?’ But it was a very challenging part for an actor to play. Also it is the guy who usually saves the girl and here I felt like the hero of the film. Vikram sir was entrusting me with this character. He believes that I can

carry this on my shoulders. He’s giving it to me and saying that she’ll be the hero of my film. So there was no way I could say no. Shivam Bhaargava (SB): I was sitting at home when Vikram sir’s casting director got in touch with me. When I spoke with sir, and he told me about it, I was blown away, because there’s so much to the story. I have grown up watching horror movies, I love horror movies. It’s always really nice when there’s a horror movie that actually has a story to it and not just dumb skills. So when I heard that I was immediately on board. What challenges did you face while making Ghost? VB: When you are actually directing a

horror film on the set, it’s very different because there is no dialogue. There is just the lighting and the camera and you’re taking shots. The crew really finds it boring because you are just working and working and working. But you need to keep the final shape of the film in mind when you’re shooting. The basic challenge if you’re making a comedy film is when are jokes good and everybody in the crew laughs. Or when you’re doing an emotional scene, everybody in the crew is really moved. But in a horror film everything is done in post production. So that’s the biggest challenge. The spirit is never there, because that’s special effects. So there is a pole and the heroine is getting scared of that. So basically, you don’t get to gauge what you’re doing on set. You generally see bored faces and you have to keep your strength through that boredom and say, ‘No, Vikram, you got it, don’t worry, they’ll still be scared in the end, even if they’re bored’. So I think that’s the biggest challenge. And in the case of Ghost, the challenge I think was also the weather. We were shooting in very cold temperatures. As a matter of fact, there was one location where we were doing the climax. It was below zero degrees and we were shooting nights. SI: Pretty much what Vikram said, there is one pole and I am getting scared. For me, my VFX was Vikram. He would keep complete silence on set. He would make scary sounds and how nice was it of him to do that! I was reacting to all of this. So he made that challenge easy. But I just cannot handle the cold. And most challenging for me was the character. I feel initially I just didn’t get the character. I didn’t understand what Vikram sir wanted from me. But I’ve said this in multiple interviews that it is he who really nurtured the character of Simran Singh. He nurtured me as well to get into it I couldn’t have done this without him. SB: I think more than anything it is just that our personalities were so different from our characters. So it wasn’t exactly a challenge but at the same time we really had to believe in the character to get into it. And of course there was the weather. You are working with each other for the first time. How was your experience working together? SI: It’s not my first time with Vikram sir. I did a web series called Zindabad and he was my co-actor. But with him (Shivam) it was my first time. SB: Honestly we were just like a house on fire. We were always laughing, always jumping about, we were like children. Our characters in the film are super mature. It was my first time working

with Vikram sir and it was really great because he’s very clear about what he wants. While we were on set, it was all business and when we would have a lunch break then we’d have our conversations. He’d tell us about his stories from other films. What should the audience expect from this film? SB: I think they should go with an open mind because this is definitely a scary movie. It’s a horror movie, but it’s also got a story to tell. VB: For me the final test is when my boss Mahesh Bhatt sees my film. Because I show him the film last when I have gained confidence from everybody else. Then I call him and he sees it. Whenever he sees it, I’m tensed because I’ve been an assistant and he doesn’t mince his words. If it’s bad, he’ll walk out halfway. He says, ‘Bad. Shut this bloody shit movie.’ And he says ‘I love you. I don’t have to love your films. I don’t have to like your work to like you.’ But when he saw Ghost and he came up and said, ‘It’s a very good film. I love this girl’s character. She’s so complex and she’s so wonderful. And I’m feeling so sorry for her.’ He asked, ‘Why do you have that song in the climax?’ So I gave him the reason for it. But he said that he did not like it. ‘Go change it’, he said. He said it’s boring. I ran and got it changed. I took the song out and then remarkably it made the end sparkle. So for me, it’s the Censor and the boss these two people have to pass the film. So one certificate we have got and now the Censor is left. Any interesting incidents that happened during the shoot? VB: We were shooting the climax with two English actors. We didn’t know that one of them was a medium (to communicate with spirits). We were shooting the climax at an old asylum. He tells me that he’s looking at the staircase and he’s telling me there’s a woman looking at us. So I’m looking for a woman but I can’t see her. The he said, she is a spirit and she wants this place. I asked him what her name is. He said her name is Rebecca. I didn’t believed him so I sent my line producers and to find out about her and it turned out he was right. And that was the scary part. 100 years back that place was actually a hostel. There was a matron there by the name of Rebecca. And it was not on the internet. It was not anywhere. There was no way that guy could have found out. That was I think one of the most eerie experiences not scary but eerie. Other than that we heard what you call the usual suspects. You have made films as well as web

shows so how different it is making a web series vis-a-vis making a film? How different are these two spaces?

VB: Not really different. I think the only thing is that in a web series, you have less chances of going wrong because you have a longer time to actually shape the nuances of the story. You can allow the story to meander a bit. You are allowed some extra tracks. You allowed some extra characters, even if they don’t lead up to the end. There is a lot of exploring that you can do with the characters and the story. But the expectations out of a film have become huge these days. And that also has got to do a lot with the ticket prices. A web series comes out asking almost nothing from the audience, and the whole family can see it if you cast it on TV. But as far as films are concerned, for an average family, it would cost almost `2000. That makes them more demanding because the more they pay for the ticket, the more they want as value for the money they pay. So you have to give them more tangible entertainment. What’s next for you? SI: I’m hoping that after Ghost we’ll have better content coming my way. There’s a lot of what I like on the web, and obviously in films. But again, the web is exploding with content. And I can’t just do anything that comes my way; I need to pick the good projects. And if that means I need to sit and wait it out and have somebody like Vikram sir believe in me, then I think I will wait. VB: I will make some prediction. I think both Shivam and Sanaya are going to be really in demand on October 19, one day after the release, if not on 18th night. Because I believe both of them have done well. The world has known Sanaya as a good actor. She’s been a top star on TV and so I think she’s being a little humble at this point of time. Shivam has done the role really well. He doesn’t know that as yet. He is still a little child in a candy shop. He hasn’t seen the dark side of the moon. But I don’t think he will after the film because it takes a lot of courage as an actor to do a film like Ghost where the actress is saving you and you are not being the hero and saving her instead. And it takes a lot of maturity to know that a film is a film. I think it’s very brave of the boy. I have never told him this. But I wish him great future. Not that I don’t wish her the same but because it’s his first and anybody who’s doing their first film, my heart goes out to them. So I wish him the best from the bottom of my heart.

Two Smiths Are Better Than One ANG LEE PITS WILL SMITH AGAINST HIS YOUNGER SELF IN GEMINI MAN BY REBECCA PAHLE

>> Ang Lee has never been one for keeping still. Over his nearly three-decade career, the director has bounced around from the costume drama (Sense and Sensibility) to the sensual spy thriller (Lust, Caution) to the wuxia actioner (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) to the superhero film (Hulk), along the way winning Best Director honors at the Oscars for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi. A through line for the director is constant experimentation. That extends not just to genre but to technology, an area in which Lee has proven himself a pioneer. In 2012’s Life of Pi, he took 3-D to new heights. In 2016, he did the same thing—albeit to a less rapturous critical reception—with high frame rate in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, shot (and, in a select number of theaters, projected) in 120 frames per second.

Lee continues to push boundaries in his latest. In Gemini Man, out October 11 from Paramount Pictures, Will Smith plays a hit man being hunted down by a younger clone of himself, also played by Smith. (A particularly fun bit of marketing saw a trailer begin with an introduction by Fresh Prince–era Smith, complete with camcorder artifacts and a JULY 25, 1989, time stamp: “So this is for myself like 30 years in the future. You should come back to Philly a lot, y’know, visit people. But also you should do a movie, like, called Gemini Man, and you should, like, release the trailer so people can see it. So that’s my advice for the future me.”) “More realism” was “a requirement” in making Smith into his younger self, Lee explains. “To make a young Will Smith that is Will Smith. Not casting another actor or hiring his son to do it or changing his hairstyle and makeup. So we have a different approach. A digital approach, that is.” Lee’s dedication to the cutting-edge in filmmaking was put on display at this year’s CinemaCon, where he was on hand to help launch the Cinity Cinema System. A joint venture between Christie Digital Systems, GDC Technology Limited, and the China-based Huaxia Film Distribution Co., Cinity was designed to provide a new standard in digital projection for advancedformat movies. Officially introduced to the world—or at least lucky attendees at Huaxia’s late-August Beijing event—with an advanced-format trailer for Gemini Man, Cinity is capable of projecting the film the way Lee, with cinematographer Dion Beebe, shot it: 120FOPS, 4K, 3-D. Lee serves as a consultant in the creation of the Cinity Film Lab, which will facilitate experimentation in the area of advanced-

format filmmaking. Speaking over the phone, Lee went into more depth about his digital philosophy, as it pertains to both filmmaking and showing the art of film to the world. You shot using high frame rate in Billy Lynn, and now again with Gemini Man. It’s only been a few years between the two films, but technology can move pretty fast. How has digital filmmaking evolved for you in that time?

Well, I’ve found it’s a new language since I did Life of Pi. In Life of Pi, I used a very small amount of 3-D. It was kind of flat. It was 3-D, but not 3-D as I think it ought to be. Because when I tried that, it was very strobe-y. You cannot watch it. Things looked strange to me. Lighting. Acting. Everything about the movie feels a little strange. So I began to ponder: The movie I believed in since childhood—what happened to it? I started to ask questions I never asked before. Ten years later, I’m still searching. It’s a new type of language, a new expression, a new way of absorbing dramatic events. I’m in the process of that. I learned that around a hundred frames per second, the strobe left, and I could stare at 3-D comfortably. But I found many questions. So I started to strip off a lot of artifice that comes along with moviemaking and movie viewing. And that’s a strange place. I found a unique story, which is Billy Lynn’s story [in which a soldier returns from war to participate in a football halftime show]. You take the war and compare it to the half-time show. That was the idea. Apparently, people would rather watch the half-time show. They didn’t want to go to war! That was that experience. A quite

precious experience. I was very proud. Everybody who worked with me jumped in and took a huge leap. So here comes Gemini Man, which is a genre film. And you have a big movie star. I tried to make it look different than [if it had been shot on] film. Last time I was imitating life, and this time I try to make it pretty. This time I jumped to the opposite direction and tried to find an aesthetic I think digital filmmaking ought to have. That’s the experiment. That’s a test. It’s a leap of faith. We took many things on. One big thing is young Will Smith, of course, which [is the sort of thing that] has never really been done before. And we’ll just see if people like the look this time. When I got into [Gemini Man], it was really humbling. A lot of what I know doesn’t really work. Some works. Some doesn’t. I have to make believe. How do I bring people into this story, into this situation? It’s not just adding a [third] dimension—the whole rules of the game have to change somehow. With characters that are—at least in part—digital creations, how do you balance hyper-realism with the emotion of the performances?

[Digital technology is] a tool for your expression. I think it’s wrong [if only realism] is the goal. I think [being] high-tech can allow you to go to even more abstract, if you know how to use it. And I would like to see digital cinema go there someday. I think you can go to your subconsciousness or something more abstract [and] make more wonders with digital effects. And visual effects can become like visual art. The goal is to make your heart feel and your head think. It’s a provocation. In August, a Gemini Man trailer screened in Cinity Cinema. Have you gotten to see the film in Cinitiy yet?

No. I was about to see it this Friday, but then we had some technical issue. I have to do it next week. I have not seen it! I saw like 15 minutes of a test two weeks ago, three weeks ago. Nobody really has seen the whole movie yet. From what I understand, the specs

Cinity is close to what I think digital cinema should be. It’s strobe-free. It looks brighter, so you don’t have to worry about bulb lighting. It’s digital. It’s more accurate, so your eyes can agree with each other and you can start doing dimensionalized filmmaking. We’re not ready for it yet. But I think that should be the standard. Last time I tried. This time I think we should have a little bit more high dynamic range. Cinity has all that. Huaxia, investing in Christie, they’ve created this new projector that has [all the basics of what I want from a digital projector]. I think you can have a good taste at 60[fps] and 2K in a regular theater, which is how we’re going to release the film. In 3-D we only provide 60 frames, which was blended down from 120 as we shot it. It comes down from 4K to 2K. And we’ll provide whatever illuminance they have in the theater. Dolby Vision can show 120[fps], high dynamic range, and at 14 footlamberts.

A regular 3-D theater can show seven footlamberts. [With those], we will only provide 60 frames per second, which we call 60 plus, or 3-D plus. It’s smoother than 60, because

Bag & Baggage Actors Kunal Kemmu, Rasika Dugal and Ranvir Shorey talk to Manisha Karki about their upcoming film Lootcase, the quirky story, prepping for their characters, the experience of working together and more How has the response to the trailer of Lootcase been? Kunal Kemmu (KK): It’s amazing, I am very happy that we are in this space today. It’s always encouraging to know that your trailer has worked and the feedback is good. What was it about the story that made you want to do it? KK: It was the mad genius called Rajesh Krishnan and his mad partner Kapil Sawant who wrote this film. When I first heard the one liner of the story, I was like this story seems very simple; a common man finds a bag full of money and people are running behind it. But when I

read it I was shocked and within two hours I just called back and said that I wanted to do the film. And that is what is so unique about this film that it may seem like a story that you have seen or heard before but it so unlike anything that you have seen before and that’s what made me do this film. From the trailer it is evident that each of you play very interesting characters. What more can you tell us about them? Ranvir Shorey (RS): I play Inspector Kolte, who is a very slimy cop. I have those qualities inside me. (Everyone laughs)

KK: So you were just playing yourself. (Laughs) RS: The characters played by Kunal and Rasika are central to the film. All other characters revolve around these two. The lootcase and I play two characters revolving around them. Rasika Dugal (RD): I play Lata, who is Nandan’s wife. She is the only lady stuck in the middle of so many crooks and who doesn’t want to anything with this lootcase. KK: I play Nandan Kumar, who I think is like and unlike so many people that l have known including myself. But I think he is one of the most interesting characters because of the

way he reacts to things which is so honest and earnest. He is probably the weirdest person that I have played because of how he reacts in terms of stress, when he’s with his wife or when he’s being investigated by this cop. He is just trying to be cautious. He is a good guy, a survivor but he gets himself into these problems that are so much bigger than him and he still tries to make it work. He is the most extraordinary type of common man. You guys are working with each other for the first time? So how was the experience? KK: I had a terrible time working with these guys because we are just so bad. (Laughs) RS: I have worked with each of them individually before but with both of them together, this is the first time. I think it’s a great mix of people who come together for this film starting with writer-director Rajesh Krishnan, who is a funny guy and I have seen him before this film. He also had a cameo in this film. Kunal and Rasika play lead roles. They both are very talented people and we know their talents from their work. Then there is Gajraj Rao and Vijay Raaz who are very talented. It is a really unique and funny film. Rajesh Krishnan has written these really quirky characters which you have never seen in your life. You cannot even imagine such people. It’s a great situational comedy and I hope you enjoy it. RD: I have watched Kunal Kemmu’s movies. When I first came to Bombay with my friend, I had seen his film Superstar and I really liked it. Then I met him on and off here and there.

Then I got an opportunity to work with him and I have heard so much about him. He is a funny guy and I had fun time with him. I have always considered Ranvir a friend. We have done a project together which didn’t get picked, so I think I got an opportunity again. Can you share any interesting incident that happened during the shoot? KK: I gave many hints to Rajesh. There is this scene in the film where Nandan opens the bag and sees that money. So he had written the scene a certain way but he was not sure of how to execute it. ‘Let us see how Nandan is and where we shoot this,’ he said. Before we shot that scene in the office, we had played it out

in different scenarios. How should it be? Should it be a conversation? We kind had a fair idea but when we reached on set and setup the shot, I looked at the bag and I kept looking at it. I said this is how I want to do it. I wanted to see that look in Nandan’s eyes. And I said I am not sure but this is the way we should do it, may be it will give us a different take all along. He trusted me and said let’s see how it goes. Even when we did it, I was not sure but he was. When he opened it, he actually breaks down when he see the money. I think it was only possible with our energy’s kind of matching and thinking of that moment kind it. But he could have said, ‘I don’t think this is right and we could have stick to his thing.’ But he believed in something that I believed in and I think it worked. So that was something special. Apart from this, when will your fans get to see you next? KK: I have a film called Malang that is releasing next year and it is completely different from what I am doing right now. It is very special to me because after Kalyug I am doing a film with Mohit Suri and its almost after 16 years we are coming back together. RD: I have the second season of Mirzapur that I have started shooting. After that I have done this series which is tentatively titled Dr Kapoor and I am playing the titular role in that. RS: I have a couple of films that will be out next year. Also, I have done some stuff on OTT, some couple of series which will be out next year.

Being British Elli AvrRam who recently made her digital debut with the ALTBalaji and ZEE5 series, The Verdict- State vs Nanavati talks to Manisha Karki about the real-lifeinspired show, her controversial role and sharing screen space with stalwarts The show is based on a real-life event. Were you aware of this case before signing the show? Yes, I was. In fact I think, three years or four years back, I was approached for the role of Sylvia. So that was the time when I read on this case and I got to know about it. But then, of course, for our project, I read about it again, and actually from the script itself, I got to know so much. There are so much of details of what actually happened, which no one knows. How did you get under the skin of Sylvia Nanavati and what research did you do for the character? You don’t find much information about Sylvia. But whatever I could find, gave me a better understanding. The script itself gave me so much. What I did was that, I coloured my hair lighter to look more British because Sylvia was British. I worked on my English accent. And I worked on my body language. I even created like a playlist with songs from the ‘50s, which I made Sylvia’s playlist. I used a special perfume, an old-school

fragrance. So these were my tools, which helped me to step into Sylvia’s world. I put myself in her position to understand her, how would she feel, how would she stand in the courtroom, how would she face the world. The show also features talented actors like Manav Kaul, Sumeet Vyas, Soni Razdan, Saurabh Shukla, Makrand Deshpande and others. How was it sharing screen space them? Oh, it was a wonderful experience. And it was such a privilege that I got to work with all these wonderful actors. Each and every scene became so much more powerful, you know. It was beautiful. I feel really blessed that I got to be a part of this beautiful project and that I got to portray Sylvia. With such wonderful actors on board there was so much to learn from them. This is your digital debut. How is doing a web show different from doing a film? There is no difference I would say, because as an actor I’m just doing the same thing. I’m stepping into my

character and delivering the scenes. How do you look at the digital space? I think it’s great. In fact, I’m very happy. It’s giving opportunity to so many people. Now, I feel there are so many actors who are getting a chance to go for auditions, to get a role in a great project. There’s so much more work happening right now. And this is for everyone, which is beautiful. Also these platforms help you to prove yourself as an actor. It’s great for everyone who is in the creative world, even for directors who get to create their vision as they don’t have to make compromises. You literally get to create what you want to create, movies or shows, which you otherwise can’t do easily. Your work also reaches a larger audience. There are so many things you have to think of when you produce a movie. What are your upcoming projects? I have another show coming on Amazon Prime as well. I’m part of Inside Edge. Then I have two South movies releasing and I have another Bollywood movie as well that’s going to release next year.

rmaan Malik has always charmed his listeners with his romantic and soulful numbers. This time he has come up with his first breakup song, Tootey khaab, which already crossed 12 million views on social media. Even though Tootey khaab is the first breakup song of Malik, he was quite confident about the response to the song. He says, “I was not nervous about the response I was going to get for Tootey khaab. Actually, before the release of any song, there is a little bit of nervousness about how it will come out, what would be the response, and all those things, just like you get nervous before going on the stage. So I was nervous in that sense. Otherwise, about the song, the lyrics, the feel of the music, I was pretty confident. We had properly planned and strategised this song.” Talking about how the song relates to the youth of today, the singer says, “I had released a few Whatsapp chats on Instagram before the song released. Also, if you see the video properly, the texting, Whatsapp and social media play a very integral part in the video. I feel that these things play a major part in relationships today, in this social media generation. We constantly see this that people breakup on text, they get blocked and to show that they have moved on, they post pictures with someone else. So we have shown those elements and I feel that this is a very relatable song for the youngsters. I was very excited to put it out and I think fans have seen me in a different avatar this time. Every time they have seen me in love songs, in romantic numbers and this is the first time they saw me crying and heartbroken.” Talking about what attracted him to sing and feature in Tootey khaab, Malik says, “When Kunaal Vermaa, who has written the song, and his partner Rangon Chatterjee, made me hear the song, the lyrics were actually the reason that

got me attracted to this song. There is a line, aise kyun badal gaya… kya koi hai mil gaya, it really hit me. I felt that it was such a relatable thing because now-a-days people change at the drop of a hat. You get confused like, why have you changed suddenly? Did you find someone? Is there a new lover in your life? What’s the reason?” “Also, there is one more line in the lyrics, karde mera faisla… aadhe mann se kaise mein jeeun. This is relatable because in today’s time people do not get proper closure. A person doesn’t understand as to why their partner is breaking the relationship. People just

say it very casually that I have lost feelings for you and now I don’t feel the same way about you like I used to. So I wanted to capture that and these things were present in the song. That’s the reason I chose this song as my first breakup single,” he adds. Speaking about how singles are getting importance as much as film songs, he says, “This scenario of singers being just the voice of actors is changing because if you see, I have done three videos myself. The first one was Aaja na Ferrari mein, then the second one was Ghar se nikalte hi and now it’s Tootey khaab. The idea is to let people know who the face to their favourite voice is. A lot of people don’t even know how some of their favourite singers look because the singers have never come in the forefront. Now with a lot of singers being featured in the videos of their own songs, fans and listeners are now aware that this is Armaan, this is Badshah or this is Guru Randhawa. Everyone is now getting to know who is who. Along with Bollywood music, non-film music is also coming up in a very big way now and slowly we will have a music industry and not just a film industry.” Like every musician, Malik also has a song that is closest to his heart. He says, “Well, there are so many songs that are close to my heart but this one particular song, Main rahoon ya na rahoon, is closest because my brother Amaal (Malik) and I had related this song to my grandfather who is no more with us.” The singer plans to experiment with not just independent music, but his film songs as well. “My next single is going to show a very different genre that people won’t think that I have done before. Even in film songs I am experimenting a lot. I am not just singing a romantic ballad. Even though it’s a romantic song, the beats are upbeat and up tempo. I am doing different stuff and in the next few months my fans and listeners will get to hear a different side of Armaan Malik,” he concludes.

rvind Swami has joined the cast of Thalaivi, the biopic on Jayalalithaa starring Kangana Ranaut. The actor, who will play the part of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and legendary actor MGR, will begin shooting for the film in Mysore from November 15. Directed by Vijay and produced by Shaailesh R Singh, the film will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Coolie No. 1 S

ahil Vaid has joined the cast of Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starrer Coolie No. 1. The film, which will also feature Shikha Talsania in a pivotal role, is directed by David Dhawan. It is presented by Pooja Entertainment and produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh. It will release on May 1, 2020.
