Storage Tips

Onions and potatoes pair well together in lots of recipes. They also like similar storage conditions, but can spoil if stored in proximity to each other. Follow these quick tips for the best possible shelf-life. —Store potatoes and onions separately. Store onions in cool, dry, well-ventilated places, optimally, at a temperature between 45ºF and 55ºF, but not in the refrigerator. Potatoes require similar storage conditions, but they also need darkness and should kept at 50ºF or less to avoid sprouting. —Potatoes can be stored in perforated plastic bags or paper bags to extend their shelf-life. —Onions should NOT be stored in plastic bags. Lack of air movement reduces storage life. —Don’t wash potatoes or onions (or any produce for that matter) before storing. Dampness will promote early spoilage. —Chopped or sliced onions can be stored in a sealed container in your refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Easy, Delicious Gluten-Free Living with Almonds

W

ith more and more people seeking gluten-free solutions due to celiac disease, gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, or just a desire to limit gluten intake, almonds are a safe and delicious choice to help make living a gluten-free life a satisfying sensory adventure. Nationally-renowned gluten-free expert and cookbook author Elana Amsterdam is proving that living gluten free doesn’t mean settling for bland and boring foods. Amsterdam, author of the popular book, “The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook,” shares many of her recipes for enticing, glutenfree dishes on her popular website, www.ElanasPantry.com. One of the staples of her gluten-free pantry is almond flour. “Almond flour is highly nutritious,” she says. “It’s easy to use, and for those of us watching our glycemic index, almond flour is chocked full of protein and low in both sugar and carbohydrates.” It’s incredibly versatile to meet all your baking needs while adding exciting flavors to your favorite baked goods. Also, by adding the allure of taste and texture from the various forms of almonds to your diet it makes it easier and more satisfying to live gluten free. They’re a perfect solution for the gluten-free diet because they provide important nutrients that are often lacking, such as fiber (3.5 g), calcium (75 mg), iron (1.1 mg) and protein (6 g). Not only that, they offer 7.4 (mg) vitamin E, 0.3 (mg) of riboflavin and 1 (mg) of niacin. Plus, a one-ounce serving has 13 grams of good unsaturated fats, just one gram of saturated fat and is always cholesterol and gluten free. For many people, the hardest part of following a gluten-free diet can be finding a variety of safe-but-tasty options that satisfy cravings. Amsterdam has created tempting recipes that just also happen to be gluten free. Her Silver Dollar Pancakes are a nutritious and delicious way to start the day. Making Cents of It All Is This Really Democracy? By N. Ronimus January 3, 2010 Across the US mid-term elections are finally over. This was an election that saw the voters turn on incumbents and toss the rascals out. This year voters traded democrats for republicans in he house after trading republicans for democrat just 2 years ago. First the republicans disappoint so we bring in the democrats and they disappoint now its back to the republicans. Does it really matter which party runs the national or state governments? It’s rather interesting that campaigns peak around trick or treat time. Political goblins and political gremlins out did themselves running campaigns designed to misinform, mislead and scare the unsuspecting voter. The candidates were as deceptive as ever with wide spread conviction among them that the state of the state was dire and it’s the other party or other candidate’s fault. As with Halloween, it’s make believe time, a time of suspended truths. The campaign apparatus must love this time because it gives free license to distort the truth and savage opponents by discrediting his or hers every action and utterance since childbirth. Its was also a time Political Action Committees and 527s to savage the legislature and public officials for failing to work wonders in difficult economic times. For the most part these are the same folks voted in during the 2008 election. In the short span of a political term they have gone from being bright eyed and bushy tailed to being dim-witted, incompetent and held up to public ridicule. So we throw the rascals out and send in a new group of soon to be rascals. This scene plays out election after election across the land and very little if anything changes for the better. Why is that? When you look at the big picture it doesn’t matter which party is elected because they are two sides of the same coin. Sure they talk differently and seem to have opposing views on most issues; but when you

10

look under the hood there’s not much difference. When republicans are elected they inch towards the center and when democrats are elected its the same story. Most politicians seem capable and sufficiently forth coming before and after the campaign, but during the campaign, they seem nothing more than parrots spouting negative garbage about their opponent and offering very little of substance to deal with the real problems of the state. During most campaigns the candidates seem clueless as to the real problems so they stick with the tried and true method of getting elected, that of demonizing the opposition, and offering up the standard, safe bromides for public consumption. If a plan or program is put forth, usually its a reflection of the party platform and nothing more than warmed over ideas that have, for the most part, been tried and discredited or rejected by the electorate many times over. However, because they suffered a bad fate or were rejected, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the ideas themselves were bad. Being human, politician come with built in bias and prejudices. Because every thing is viewed through the prism of that bias and prejudice, new and opposing ideas have little chance of immediate acceptance. If this isn’t bad enough, this blindness to new and competing ideas is exacerbated by political party affiliation. The story goes that the democrats never met a tax hike that they did not like and republicans never met a problem that couldn’t be fixed with tax cuts. Of course, the public knows these to be false premises but that does not stop the party hacks and paid political operatives from injecting this bit of divisive polarization into every election. I think politicians in general would like to propose and do the right thing; however, more often than not, party dogma and entrenched ideologies so becloud the issues, the real needs of the state are lost in the attacks. Across the country state after state is in dire financial straits. It didn’t just get Satorimagazine.com

this way, the warning signs having been flashing for years. Every where schools building are in disrepair, public and emergencies services are being cut and in many states public employees are being furloughed and or forced to take cuts in pay and benefits.

In a 2010 survey by the National League of Cities, 51 percent of the cities that responded said they had either cut or frozen salaries of city employees, 22 percent said they had revised union contracts to reduce some pay and benefits, and 19 percent said they had instituted furloughs. The physical infrastructure can only suffer so much neglect before the bills come due. How long before the next bridge collapses or a dam gives way?

According to National Transportation Statistics for 2009: Total US Highway Bridges 603,259 Structurally Deficient 71,177 Functionally Obsolete 78,477

How did things get this way? Look no further than the electorate. Across the country there is a persistent polarization that serves as a backdrop to every election, national or local. It starts along political party lines and expands from there. During the last national election different regions were pitted against one another for the sake of a few votes. Urban America was pitted against Small Town America, red states against blue states and the south against the north. And part of every election, whether covert or overt, the wedge issues; reproductive choice, gun control, offshore drilling and immigration controls. All push their agendas with vigor and enthusiasm. These are serious issues to the adherents but the state will not flounder if resolution is slow in coming. How long has the

national debate on abortion raged? How long will the gun control debate rage? Will they ever be put to rest? If history is any guide, probably not, but the union will not perish. Although cultural wars and sniping aren’t showstoppers, they tend to heighten emotions, which can contribute to the ambient polarization. With emotions running high over wedge issues the truly transcendent issues such as fiscal policy, budgetary short falls and tax policy doesn’t get the public airing and open debate necessary to gain wide spread understanding or public support for policies that would address the problem. If the state budget process is under water, which is the case in many states, and faced with the possibility of bankruptcy and insolvency, spatting over gun control is counter productive.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priotities, a Washington research institution: Forty six states face budget shortfralls that add up to $112 billion for the friscal year ending next June. Because emotions surrounding wedge issues can be very strong, many become single-issue voters. If one is a strong anti abortion advocate it’s more than likely that the candidate or party that promises to outlaw abortion will get their vote, the economy be damned. Many excellent candidates never make it through the partisan primary campaigns; because of their stand on wedge issues, they fail the party litmus test. So, after what seems like an eternity of name calling and negative blather, the candidates that were canny enough to safely tip toe through the wedge issues and smart enough not to antagonize the large special interest groups while steering clear of major controversy, gets the voter stamp of approval. Temporary though it may be. The process seldom find and elect the best candidates; however, it will always find and elect the most popular, least controversial and the least threatening to special interest

Citizen Exercising Right To Vote

groups. The question is, after a process spanning months and costing nearly 1.5 billion dollars what did the voters get? Elected officials with a mandate of “no new taxes” in response to the voter’s demand “no new

Elections Are Big Business Campaign Cost According to The Federal Election Comission House Candidates 1869 Dollar outlay $952,377,374 Senate Candidates 296 Dopllar outlay $554,718,813 taxes.” And who can blame voters, no one like higher taxes. Making such campaign promises pretty much ensures that the needs of the state will not be addressed. Fiscal solvency is a serious and transcendent problem in many states but because fixes must include tax increases and cuts in popular voter mandated programs, campaigns tended to shy away from details. Instead, promises such as no new taxes, or promises to cut waste and fraud and simplify regulations are trotted out as solutions. When the newly elected and the reelected are sworn and can no longer

hide from the reality that tax hikes and or programs cuts are essential elements to fix fiscal solvency they are without the prerequisite mandate. A mandate of no new taxes, cutting fraud and waste, simplifying regulations is not going to get it done. If there is no mandate, no action as unpopular as tax hikes or cuts in popular programs are likely so we complain and wait for the next election to throw the rascals out. When will voters wise up and demand campaigns that air and debate the underlying long term structural fiscal issues that are the real basis for financial solvency? As long as voters believe its simply a matter of getting the right people in office, and as if by magic, every thing will be okay, the slide toward insolvency will continue. By now voters should realize that persisting in this attitude would only work to forestall any forward progress on reconciling the revenue to spending gap.

Even as the United States appears to be on the mend, gross domestic product has climbed three straight quarters, finances in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and other states show few signbs of imnprovement. Recessions will come and go but structural problems faced by the states will persist until the hard choices are made and constructive actions are taken.

Tips For Treating A Sick Child Battery Basics

O

nce the winter months set in, it seems there’s always some sort of “bug” going around school. Between colds, flu, strep and other common illnesses, kids are lucky to escape this season without coming down with something. But if they do get sick, what should you do? These tips will help parents and caregivers see kids through the illness and get them back on the way to health. Treating a Fever. Not every fever needs treatment. Fevers are part of how the body fights off infection. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) says that if your child is eating and sleeping well, and has periods of playfulness, he or she probably doesn’t need any treatment. But consult with your child’s doctor to find out what’s best in each case. The AAP has these tips for taking care of a child with a fever: • Keep his room and your home comfortably cool, and dress him lightly. • Encourage her to drink extra fluid such as water, diluted fruit juices or commercially prepared oral electrolyte solutions. • If the fever is a symptom of a highly contagious disease such as chickenpox or the flu, keep your child away from other children, elderly people, and people whose immune systems are compromised. Treating Colds and Flu. While it’s tempting to seek medicinal treatment for every ailment, there is no cure for the cold or flu, and antibiotics don’t work on the viruses that cause colds and flu. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) says that headaches, muscle aches, sore throats and some fevers can be treated with pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Be sure you give the correct dose according to his or her age and weight.

What Homeowners Need to Know About Rechargeable Batteries

• • •

Cough and cold medicines are not recommended for children, especially those younger than two. Make sure your child rests and drinks plenty of fluids. A humidifier can help moisten the air in your child’s bedroom and will help with nasal congestion.

Medicating Children. When a doctor does prescribe an antibiotic or antiviral medication, there are several important things to be aware of. The AAP recommends finishing all prescribed doses of an antibiotic, even if the child starts to feel better soon. They also recommend: • Sticking with the schedule – don’t skip doses and ask the doctor what to do if a dose isn’t given on time. • Giving the right amount – Never give a child more medicine because you think it might work better or faster. It could do more harm than good. • Don’t try to hide the medicine – If a child hates the taste of the medicine, or tries to spit it out, it might be tempting to try to hide it in milk or food. But this could affect how well the medicine works, so do not do this unless specifically directed by your child’s doctor. For liquid prescriptions and over-the-counter medications that your child does hate the taste of, pharmacies can add Flavorx flavors to improve the taste. There are 15 to 20 flavors to choose from, including bubblegum, grape, strawberry and watermelon. Giving kids the power of choice when it comes to the taste of their medicine really makes a difference. The flavoring service is available at 40,000 major chain pharmacies across the country. Go to www.flavorx.com/locator to find one near you. If your child is prescribed medication in pill form, there are ways to help the medicine go down. A flavored spray such as Pill Glide helps medications, vitamins and supplements go down without giving kids a stuck-in-the-throat feeling. It is available in grape and strawberry flavors and can be found in several national chain pharmacies. Find out more about both products at www.flavorx.com.

f you have a cell phone, laptop or cordless power tool, chances are, your products are being powered by a lithium-ion battery power. With the growing demand for more efficient technologies, convenience and cost effectiveness, consumers should know some background behind what is powering the products that simplify their lives. These tips will help you make a smart purchase and give your batteries a longer life. Battery Types With proven power since the 1970s, lithium ion batteries began as a reliable power source for professional industries – now they’re a household mainstay. In fact, today lithium-ion (Li-ion) are among the most common types of rechargeable batteries consumers use, lending power to portable electronics such as cell phones, laptops and cordless tools. Lithium-ion is fast-becoming a popular form of portable power because: • They’re generally much lighter than other types of rechargeable batteries of the same size and power. • Once charged, it holds the charge longer before running down. • Although lithium is more expensive than other battery ingredients, its increased use has resulted in increased production, thereby dropping the costs to consumers. “Lithium-ion power is revolutionizing consumer technology,” says Keith McQuaid, consumer power tool product development manager for Black & Decker.

here’s no masking it: when it comes to unpleasant household odors, the stinkiness wafting from the trash can is tops. According to a recent survey, 75 percent of Americans rated trash can odors as the most offensive smell in their home, beating out pet waste, dirty diapers and dead flowers. And when it comes to trash can smells, foodrelated waste out-stinks the competition with those surveyed reporting that spoiled food left in their refrigerator, meal-time dinner scraps and leftovers as the top three odors they’d like to have scent protection from. “Kitchens are a breeding ground for olfactory offenses,” says cleaning expert Linda Cobb, also known as the “Queen of Clean.” “But as easy as it is to create these foul odors, it’s just as easy to alleviate them.” Cobb offers short-cuts to stamping out stink in five areas of the kitchen: •

Foul Fridge: Wipe out the refrigerator with a solution of half water and half white vinegar before putting groceries away. This is a great way not only to clean, but also combat odors associated with food. A bowl of fresh coffee grounds will also help reduce odors in the refrigerator or the pantry.

Fitness And Health With Diona The Neglected Hamstrings By Diona Lynn Austin December 13, 2010

A

ny sport fan or athlete can immediately identify with hamstring injuries. How often does an important player on your favorite team have to sit because of damaged hamstrings? How Many of you have suffered injury to the hamstrings that limited your physical activities such as participation in sports, dancing, cutting the lawn, or just playing with the kids? Beyond sports and good time activities, healthy hamstrings are essential to a well body. The Hamstrings’ main function is to move the upper leg backwards at the hip joint and pull the lower leg up at the knee joint. The Hamstrings’ job becomes more complex in different situations, but they also help move your upper body and rotate your lower leg. During jogging, running or walking, they act to control the quadriceps movements. As the quadriceps try to bring the legs forward and straighten them at the knee joint the hamstrings act to slow down towards the end of the movement to aid change in direction which is required to complete the walking movement. These are the most important group of muscles to stretch in the whole body. Muscles such as these that are shortened regularly, resulting in tight Hamstrings, require more stretching than any other body part. More often than not tight Hamstrings are responsible for a much of the back pain injuries that are so prevalent today. This is the direct result of shortened hamstring muscles which tend to shorten and remain shortened with use. The Hamstrings are shortened so much because they are used constantly during the day for walking and sitting. Sitting for long periods, and activity for which most are guilty, is probably the greatest single cause of shortened hamstring muscles. In addition to shortened hamstrings from normal wear and tear, athletes frequently suffer more serious hamstring injuries such as strains, tears, and ruptures. To guard against these common injuries its

important to strengthen the hamstring muscles. This is best accomplished with stretching exercises that range from the simple which can be easily done at home to the complicated which requires a trip to the gym. Weights and exercise machines are good for stretching the hamstrings; however, your body will be the main means of working out your hamstrings. Before starting any exercise routine check with your physician. The hamstrings, a group three muscles, are posiitoned on the backside of the thighs. They are made up of the biceps femoris(outer rear thigh) the semitendinosus (inner rear thigh) and the semimembranosus ( inner rear thigh).

was derived from the bottom portion of a shopping cart; however, it has since been developed and professionally built by Jacoy Inc. an athletic product development company formed by Jackson and McCoy. McCoy, a school teacher, teamed up with pal Jackson and created the ham-o-matic. Jackson, a volunteer coach at Rubidoux High School, in Rubidoux, California, who also coaches track and field, is a former track and field star out of Compton, California and UCLA. I recently met with Dave to gain a few pointers on different exercise routines and to learn more about the Ham-O-Matic. When asked how he came up with the idea, Dave stated that the idea came to him while at a dr.’s appointment with his daughter when he used his legs to roll forward in a chair to reach for something. Mr. Jackson comes from an athletic background. His father Dave Jackson senior is a member of the U.S. Masters Track and Field Hall of Fame and holds the U.S. Masters World Records in the Long jump and Triple Jump. He also organized the first Interracial Track and Field Clinic in South Africa. Dave Jackson Jr. has become an expert on building speed in runners of the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter races as well as short distance and sprint runners.

There is a multitude of exercises and equipments used to strengthen hamstrings; however, the leg curl exercise is the most common hamstring exercise you will see in the gym. A good Leg Curl machine will not have a flat bench but will be angled slightly. You can accomplish this on a flat- bench machine by placing a towel under your hips. Recently I was introduced to the Ham-OMatic, an alternative way of strengthening your hamstrings. Invented by Dave Jackson and Warren McCoy, the device

The Ham-o-matic addresses the hamstring muscle which is often ignored. According to Jackson, “It balances the back of the leg with the front. Most people neglect the hamstrings because they are in the back and you can’t see them. No one walks backwards into a room or in front of a mirror.” The Ham-O-Matic not only strengthens the hamstrings, it also gives an effective cardiovascular workout, improves knees and ankle stability and tones abdominal and calves.

This machine has been approved for use in the physical education curriculum at Mission Middle School and Jurupa Unified High School District in Southern California. It’s also used by Falcon cross country and track and field stars. It is credited with assisting local athletes gain an edge in competitive events. Ham-O-Matic is endorsed by ExNFL Player Anthony Prior, founder of Oceanspeed Training Camp. It is used to increase speed, flexibility and aid injury prevention. Nick Newton, the inventor of “Newton Starting Blocks” has also indorsed and used the Ham-O-Matic for College/International Competition Worldwide. Sam Gee who holds the CIFSS State Champion Boy’s Cross Country title also uses the Ham-O-Matic in the Middle School P.E and A.P.E Programs. I’ve used the Ham-O-Matic three times a week for about a month now, and in my opinion, this machine is amazingly effective. By using a series of different exercise routines not only have my hamstrings gotten stronger and more toned, but I’ve gotten a great workout in other areas as well.

Strength Coaches and athletes alike recognize the importance of training the lower half of the body. And unless you are strong enough to walk on your hands all day, the general public needs to acknowledge the importance of having strong legs. One thing we often forget is the importance of balancing the hamstring to quad strength ratio. The hamstrings need to be routinely stretched and exercised to keep them strong and long, the back straight, flexible and pain free. The Ham-O-Matic should be hitting the mainstream very soon. I have been given the opportunity to continue to use this

This is how Pitchford taught me the hamstring stretch. Lie on your back, keeping the back flat and your eyes focused upward. Grasp the back of one thigh with both your hands and (leg bent) pull that thigh into a 90-degree position vs. the floor. Then slowly straighten your knee. Bone Health Maintaining Bone Health You may not know this, but your bones play an important role in your overall health. They not only give the body a frame that lets you move, bones store minerals that are vital to the function of other life-sustaining systems. According to the Office of the Surgeon General, an estimated 10 million Americans over age 50 have osteoporosis or “thinning of the bones,” while another 34 million are at risk. The National Osteoporosis Foundation says that approximately one in two women, and up to one in four men over age 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining lifetime. Bone health needs to be a priority for people of all ages. One simple way to improve bone health is to make sure your diet includes bone-building nutrients like calcium, Vitamin D and phytonutrients.

Male Breast Cancer Awareness By Bernice Carter – McNeil November 17, 2010

A

nna, my best friend from high school, is the ispiration for this article. Both of her parents died from BREAST cancer and three siblings were diagnosed with the disease. Two of them are now considered cancer survivors while one continues undergoing treatment and continues to fight for his life. Not much is heard about male breast cancer because the disease is generally associated with women. Yet, approximately 1000 men are diagnosed every year.

Important Reasons for Annual Mammogram Early detection can save your life As one ages the risk of cancer increases Early detection often means less surgery Getting a mammogram is easier than you think

The consensus is risk is higher in men because they tend to ignore any abnormalities in the breast and by the time they seek medical attention, the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

An annual mammogram allows peace of mind

Male breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast.

Radiation Exposure

There are many reasons why people fall victim to breast cancer and at least 10% found in men are gene related. (family member diagnosed with breast cancer). Cancer starts the same way in men as it does in women, a lump in or around the nipple area or underneath the armpit. Some may have blood discharge from the nipple as well as retraction, where the nipple begins to retract or dimple inward.

Early detection can increase the chance of a full recovery. According to the American Cancer Society, there are several risk factors for male breast cancer. Excessive Alcohol Aging (on average diagnosed when 60 or over) Family History Inherited Gene Mutations

Obesity

Estrogen Treatment (used in hormonal therapy for men with prostate cancer)

Men with breast cancer have lumps that can be felt easily because there is less tissue around the breast and nipple , yet it may be one of the most common things men tend to ignore. When medical attention is finally sought, the disease has spread beyond the breast area and the diagnosis and treatment has become extremely critical. Although, breast cancer in men is rare an estimated 1,970 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2010. Overall incidence of breast cancer is 1.3 per 100,000 men compared to123 per 100,000 women as reported by the American Society of Clinical Oncology,

Certain factors affect prognosis and treatment options Treatment for breast cancer is the same for both men and women. Radiation and Chemotherapy are the most common; however, surgery is often necessary to remove the cancerous tissue. Even then, Radiation and Chemotherapy treatment will continue until disease goes into Satorimagazine.com

remission. The dosage is dependent upon what stage you are in. Someone in stage 3 may have a higher intensity of treatment because the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Stage 1 means the cancer may not have spread and the prognosis of recovery is good.

This is not the time for panic but a time for awareness. Men have to adopt the same measures employed by women: monthly breast self-exams and yearly mammograms if deemed at risk based on the risk factors cited above. However, let us not be guided by the risk factors alone, breast cancer strikes even those of us who have no history of this disease in our immediate family, therefore, it is better to be safe than sorry. Don’t be afraid to discuss breast cancer awareness with your children if they are also at risk, and men, if you feel something out of the ordinary around the breast area, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. A lump does not always mean cancer, but it surely means a trip to the doctor. Let’s be safe and most of all let’s be sure!

Beauty Tips

ith a new celebrity fragrance launching in what seems like every month nowadays, it can be hard to determine what fragrance is right for you. “Wearing fragrance is a deeply personal experience. It says a lot about you, so choosing properly is important,” says John Krites, beauty expert for L’Bel, a company known for its luxurious cosmetics and French-produced skin care and fragrances. “Scent can make a first impression, boost your mood and even affect one’s alertness and efficiency. The most important part about selecting a fragrance is how it makes you feel. I always advise that women, and men alike, take time to determine if a scent is really the perfect fit for them.” So how does one go about selecting a signature perfume with so many options? Krites shares his top tips.

Fragrances come in five primary categories which include floral, fruity, woody, greens, and oriental. “I recommend having a second scent for special occasions. Maybe it’s something with stronger base notes. I love L’Bel’s Mithyka fragrance for women in the evening because it’s a perfect balance of juicy fruit scents with subtle notes of musk and sandalwood;” says Krites. Apply properly: It is a common misconception that you should spray fragrance onto your inner wrists and then rub them together. This actually hampers the scent and can cause you to have an improper scent experience. Instead, apply directly to the skin at the neckline, on the interior of the elbow joints and on the inside of the wrists. Spray, then walk away: The first whiff of a scent is only one impression of how perfume will smell - scents can actually be different on each person because of body chemistry. “I always tell people never make an impulse buy on fragrance,” says Krites. eauty starts with healthy and beautiful skin. Being the exposed part of the body, its vulnerable to the harsh rays of the sun and harmful substances in the air To combat the problem, collectively, the beauty industry has created a boat load of skin care products; however, mother nature has provided a plethora of natural wonders that are every bit as good as the big names with still bigger price tags. Natures bounty is plentiful but the following natural fruits, juices and vegetables are particularly beneficial in healthy and beautiful skin: Apple Juice – Remedy for wrinkles, cracked skin, itching, inflammation and dandruff Lime Juice – Gives a shine to the skin and is used to cure pimples Strawberry – Works as a conditioning and skin toning treatment. Pineapple -- Skin softener, cleanses rough skin spots like knees, elbow and heels. Orange Juice -- Effective remedy for pimples and acne.

Brandenberg Concertos -- J. S. Bach 1721

Raw Papaya – Effective in the removal of whiteheads, boils and spots.

What follows is just the first sentence of his dedication to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt, its tone, if not its rather remarkable length, typical of dedications of the period:

Mango/Guava -- Boiled leaves can be used as antiseptic.

“As I had the good fortune a few years ago to be heard by Your Royal Highness, at Your Highness’s commands, and as I noticed then that Your Highness took some pleasure in the little talents which Heaven has given me for Music, and as in taking Leave of Your Royal Highness, Your Highness deigned to honour me with the command to send Your Highness some pieces of my Composition: I have in accordance with Your Highness’s most gracious orders taken the liberty of rendering my most humble duty to Your Royal Highness with the present Concertos, which I have adapted to several instruments; begging Your Highness most humbly not to judge their imperfection with the rigor of that discriminating and sensitive taste, which everyone knows Him to have for musical works, but rather to take into benign Consideration the profound respect and the most humble obedience which I thus attempt to show Him.”

Fresh basil – Treatment for pimples In many skin care products turmeric is used because it is an excellent antiseptic. It leaves your skin soft, smooth and glowing. Fresh turmeric fingers can be ground with a little mile and applied on the face and the body. Combine apple juice, cucumber, pear and mix with flour, add a teaspoon of water and stir thoroughly. Apply after cleaning face avoiding eye and mouth areas. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse off thoroughly.

Feature Whats’s In a Song? -- The Roads To Moscow By N.Ronimus December 28, 2010

R

ecently while cleaning a dark corner of the garage I stumbled upon some old vinyl LPs. There is one in particular that I treasure. It s not up there in popularity with my other treasured period pieces, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of The Moon,” The Beatle’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s club Band” or Bob Dylan’s “Times They are Changin,” but I love it.’ “Past, Present and Future” by Al Stewart is not your run of the mill album, and on my scale of importance, it ranks near the top. Its unique in that many of the songs are remarkably accurate accounts of historical events, and in this regard “The Roads to Moscow” stand out. Its a capsulized but fairly accurate account of the war between Russia and Nazi-Germany (1938-1945.) It captures the horrors of World War II and the abject misery of war torn countries. War can distort norms, wreck inhibitions and turn your average jane or joe into cold blooded killers. We don’t just become killers we also keep a tab and wave it like a badge of honor. In this song there are no winners or losers; just everyday people, taken from their safe and familiar environs, and cast into the hell of war. In war there is no glory just death and destruction. Many of the lucky ones who walk away physically whole are broken psychologically and never fully recover.

“They crossed over the border the hour before dawn moving in lines through the day Most of our planes were destroyed on the ground t’were they lay Waiting for orders we held in the woods Word from the front never came By evening the sound of the gunfire was miles away I softly move through the shadows, slip away through the trees Crossing their lines in the mist in the fields on our hands ands our knees

Two broken tigers on fire in the night Flicker their souls to the wind We wait in the lines for the final approach to begin It’s been almost four years that I’ve carried a gun At home, it will almost be spring The flames of the tiger are lighting the road to Berlin

And all that I ever Was able to see The fire in the air, glowing red Silhouetting the smoke on the breeze

I quickly move through the ruins that bow to the ground The old men and children they send out to face us, they can’t slow us down

All summer they drove us back through the Ukraine Smolensk and Viasma soon fell By autumn we stood with backs to the town of Orel Closer and closer to Moscow they come Riding the wind like a bell General Guderian stands at the crest of the hill

And all that I ever Was able to see The eyes of the city are opening Now it’s the end of a dream

Winter brought with it the rains, oceans of mud filled the roads Gluing the tracks of their tanks to the ground, while the skies filled with snow And all that I ever Was able to see The fire in the air, glowing red Silhouetting the snow on the breeze

In the footsteps of Napoleon, the shadow It was to protect itself and avert war that Stalinist Russia entered into a pact with Nazi- figures stagger through the winter Germany. However, Germany’s actions quickly Falling back before the gates of Moscow, standing in the wings like an avenger revealed that it had other plans. And far away behind their lines, the partisans are stirring in the forest The depth of meaning in “The Roads to Coming unexpectedly upon their outpost, Moscow” is such that I could write volumes; growing like a promise however, this is only intended as a thumbnail You’ll never know, you’ll never know, which sketch; first I will present the song and then a way to turn, which way to look you’ll never narrative of the history behind the song: see us As we steal into the blackness of the night The Roads to Moscow -- by Al you’ll never know, you’ll never hear us

Whats’s In a Song? -The Roads To Moscow Germany came to terms with the USSR to clear the way for the invasion of Poland. The Soviets, who could not negotiate an agreement with the allies, decided to protect themselves by dealing with Nazi Germany directly. The pact signed in Moscow included non-aggression and trade agreements. World War II began within weeks when Germany invaded Poland. The pact was broken when the Germans invaded the USSR in June 1941. “Most of our planes were destroyed on the ground where they lay ...” On June 22, 1941 the German’s launched their attack on Russia. In the initial onslaught the Russians loss 1,200 aircraft in the first 9 hours. Within a week 90 percent of the Soviet front line strength had been destroyed. “Smolensk and Viasma soon fell ...” Smolensk is a Russian city on the Dnieper River. The Germans took the city during the summer of 1941. It became a central battlefield in the drive towards Moscow. Moscow is only 200 miles east of Smolensk along a road that had been taken by Napoleon in 1812. It was liberated by Russian troops in the winter of 1942-43. “By autumn we stood with our backs to the town of Orel ...” Orel fell under German control October 8, 1941. German press chief Otto Dietrich told the world’s leading newspapers “For all military purposes Soviet Russia is done with. The British dream of a two-front war is dead.” “General Guderian stands at the crest of the hill ....” Heinz Guderian (1888-1954), appointed chief of German mobile troops in 1938, was a German military strategist and leading proponent of tank warfare. He is also credited with developing the blitzkrieg. The blitzkrieg was successful during the invasion of Poland and pivotal in the invasion of France in 1940. General Guderian, in charge of the German invasion of Russia, was known for having many disagreements with Adolph Hitler with regards to strategy.

Amber Room Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo, Russia “Winter brought with her the rains, oceans of mud filled the roads ...” Guderian noted that it started to snow on October 6, and reported that it was still snowing on October 12. By November he was reporting severe cases of frostbite, and no sign of winter clothing from headquarters. The temperature had fallen to 31 below zero, and this was causing the ill-prepared German troops hardships. On December 5, the temperature stood at 36 degrees below zero. On December 6, Russia unleashed 100 divisions of troops equipped and trained for the harsh conditions on the German invaders. For weeks afterwards the Germany army retreated, their front lines constantly pierced by Soviet troops. General Brauchitsch told his Chief of General Staff that he was quitting as Commander in Chief of the Army. “And the evening sings in a voice of amber...” The Baltic Sea coast has been a source of amber trade since prehistoric times. Neolithic artifacts made of amber were discovered in nearby Juodkrante in the 19th century. Lithuanian mythology, folklore, and art have long associations with amber; the legend of “Jurate and kastytis” imagines an undersea palace of amber under the Baltic, which was shattered by Perkunas, the god of thunder. Its fragments were thought to be the source of the amber that still washes up on the Baltic beaches. The Etruscans prized it as highly as gold. In Greeks mythology it’s considered the tears of Apollo’s daughters, solidified when they cried for their dead brother Phaeton. The Romans considered a single piece of amber to be worth more than a slave. Cultures across the world have used it both as a powerful medicine and as a medium for exquisite jewelry and works of fine art. The Amber Room: In the early 18th century Prussian king Frederick William I presented Peter the Great with several carved amber wall panels. Constructed of thousands of interlocking pieces, the panels included

During the 1740’s Empress Elizabeth had the panels installed in a 30-foot high room in the Catherine Palace near Leningrad. In 1755, Catherine ordered the amber moved to her summer residence at Tsarskoje Selo where a new generation of craftsmen worked for 15 years on a chamber to house the panels. Finally, in 1770, the Amber Room assumed the completed state that was to make it so famous. In September 1941, German troops removed the panels and sent them by truck convoy and train to Konigsberg, a port city between Poland and Lithuania. In 1944, Konigsberg was bombed for 2 days. No remains of the panels were found in the rubble, so it is believed they were moved before the attack; however, it’s still a mystery as to what actually happen to the amber panels.

During the Russian push towards Berlin in the latter days of the war there were a number of massive tank battles, at times involving hundreds of Russian and German tanks. In January 1945 the Russians mounted their greatest offensive of the war. Stalin sent 180 divisions; many heavily armored, into Poland and East Prussia. By January 27 East and West Prussia were cut off from the Third Reich, and Russian troops were only 100 miles from Berlin. Berlin was left pretty much to the Soviets. Concrete Care For Winter Simple Tips For Home Concrete Care

A

few hours of work now could save homeowners hundreds of dollars — or more — in costly concrete repairs come spring. Freezing rain, ice, snow and deicers, as well as freeze/thaw temperature cycles have the potential to wreak havoc on concrete surfaces if left unchecked. Not only does the saturation and freezing of concrete surfaces accelerate crack expansion and surface deterioration, but the spreading of deicing salts also causes severe damage to the aesthetic and structural integrity of unprotected concrete. Precautionary measures such as repairing and sealing cracks and damaged concrete surfaces are costeffective solutions homeowners can do themselves to prevent expensive replacement projects in the future. Waterproofing sealers offer a reliable, durable finish for a variety of surfaces, including concrete, masonry, stucco and brick. Sealers, such as Quikrete Acrylic Concrete Cure & Seal — Satin Finish, offer a highly water resistant coating that

protects the surface from cold weather freeze and thaw cycles — a common cause of surface cracking and spalling over time. If properly maintained, concrete can last generations. The repair and maintenance is easy if you know what to look for and use the right products.

What to look for Homeowners can use the following check list and do a walk around their homes — if any of these trouble spots are found, it’s time to make repairs.

Cracks and missing concrete

Typically found in driveways, car ports and exterior walk ways. Cracks that appear small can grow in size with continued exposure to water and temperature changes over time.

Spalling

Occurs when the freeze/thaw cycles cause the water that has saturated the concrete to freeze and expand — Satorimagazine.com

eventually eroding away the surface layer of the concrete. Deicing agents create more freeze/thaw cycles for unprotected concrete to endure, causing further erosion. Damage to the concrete’s aesthetic and structural integrity is more likely to appear the longer spalling is neglected, increasing the likelihood of a more expensive repair.

Water leaks Visible water leaks on masonry or concrete walls are an indication water is likely seeping from the outside. If left unchecked, leaking water can also cause extensive — and costly — damage to interior surfaces. Depending on the size of a repair, companies such as Quikrete offer products that are specially designed to fix particular structural and cosmetic issues with concrete. Continues on page 28

Winter Home Concrete Care Continued from page 27

Careful preparation of the concrete surface is essential for positive end results. Use broom and sweep the entire area to remove all dust and debris. The surface and cracks must be clean, dry and free of grease, dust or loose concrete prior to any repairs. Clean the surface with a concrete and asphalt cleaner and then rinse with clean water. Do not leave any standing water on the surface to be repaired. For minor horizontal cracks or fractures (1/8 inch to 1/2 inch in width), use a flexible concrete crack sealant. Cut the tip of the bottle so the opening matches the width of the crack. If the crack is deep, fill to within 1/4 inch of the surface with a fine sand. Squeeze the repair material into the crack in 1/4-inch layers, over-filling slightly to allow for shrinkage. Additional layers can be applied after 24 hours as needed. A polymer-modified concrete patching product is best for thin repairs to cracking and spalling concrete areas up to a few square feet in size and 1/2 inch in depth. The special vinyl resins improve bonding characteristics that help the repair bond to the damaged concrete and creates a dense water-resistant surface that helps counteract the freezing and expansion of water in the concrete. Prior to applying the patching product, dampen the repair area with water — enough water should be used to saturate the surface, but any standing water should be removed (applying repair materials to a dry surface will weaken the bond and can cause shrinkage cracking). The product should be built up in layers using a margin trowel — the first layer should be pressed into the repair area using firm trowel pressure. Feather edge the mix out onto the surrounding concrete to create a smooth repair. Apply the patching material in 1/4-inch layers. If the hole is deeper than 1/4 inch, apply in stages and allow each layer to cure for several days before starting the next. If water is seeping through small cracks in basement walls, begin by clearing any loose debris from around the crack. The active leak can then be plugged with a fast-setting hydraulic cement material. To protect concrete surfaces from cold weather freeze and thaw cycles — a common cause of surface cracking and spalling over time — use a water resistant concrete sealer to protect the surface. First, clean the surface to be coated with a concrete and asphalt cleaner, then use a roller or garden sprayer to apply the sealer. One gallon should coat 150 to 250 square feet. How to Succeed as a Small Business Owner

M

ichelle Binks has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. A move to a new city provided her a chance to start her own consulting business, building from the experience she received from her employment in large human resource departments. “Starting my company was not a tough decision, it was learning how to maintain and grow my company to where I wanted it to be that I needed help with,” said Binks, president and owner of HR Consulting Solutions Binks was not alone in needing help. The Small Business Administration says 50 percent of all small businesses fail within the first five years. But, according to a Dun and Bradstreet study, 90 percent of successful businesses say they sought out expert help. Binks found that help through the Business Accelerator Program, a free program provided by American Family Insurance that uses nationally recognized small business experts to help small business owners succeed. “What’s great about the Business Accelerator Program is the specificity it provides for individual companies,” said Binks. “When starting my business, I didn’t realize the huge importance of sales and marketing, but the Business Accelerator experts worked with me personally and covered these areas in a way that I could apply to my business and make a difference to my bottom line.” She is just one small business owner who has seen the positive growth in their business because of the program. “Entrepreneurs face new challenges every day,” said Bob Wright, Wright Business Institute founder and Business Accelerator career coach. “Overdue payments, materials

that don’t arrive on time, employees who don’t show up for work, and more. It’s easy to feel daunted and become paralyzed. Often, just taking one small step in the right direction will get things moving to really take off. The Business Accelerator program is a great step that will provide business owners the tools to make those little changes that can immediately make a difference in their business.” The Business Accelerator program experts offer these tips to help small business owners make those changes to better their business: •

Target your Audience - It’s tempting to try a little bit of every type of advertising that’s offered to you. But with limited budgets, entrepreneurs end up with a tiny presence in each. Instead, select a few mediums that really reach your target audience and that you can afford to establish a presence in by using frequency and larger visuals. Set Goals - What is your higher purpose for being a small business owner? What matters most to you? Write down your answers and keep them close at hand. Share them with your business partners, allies and friends. Remind yourself of them when you pick up the phone, when you face rejection, when you squeeze in another sales call on the way to pick up the kids. Sell Hope First - Many sales professionals make the mistake of getting caught up in trying to sell the features and dimensions of their product first – rather than engaging with the customer around their hopes and dreams, about what they hope to accomplish. It’s important to understand the bigger picture

in positioning yourself with a client and in the marketplace.

in the bag to neutralize odors – not just mask them, leaving behind a fresh scent while offering stretchable strength to help prevent rips and messy clean-ups. •

Microwave Meal-time Meltdowns: Pour about an inch of vanilla extract in a bowl and bring it to a boil in the microwave. As soon as the vanilla reaches a boil, turn the microwave off. Leave the bowl in the microwave overnight without opening the door. Any microwave odor problems will vanish by morning.

Ghastly Garbage Disposal: Put the plug in the sink and fill it with about three inches of warm water along with a handful of baking soda. Turn the disposal on and immediately pull the plug. The suction created – coupled with the baking soda – cleans out trapped food and sends it down the drain.

Scorched Supper Stench: To help clear the smell of burned food, fill a pan with water and bring it to a boil. Drop in a sliced lemon or about a ¼ cup of lemon juice and allow to simmer on the stove.

Sexually Conflicted By N. Ronimus December 21, 2010

E

very time the commercial “ What you do in Las Vegas stays in Vegas” fills the Television screen I wonder; other than legalized gambling what happens in Vegas that doesn’t happen in any other city in the world? Are the seductive settings a clue? Are the scantily clad waitresses that populate every casino a clue? Surely it can’t be the slots or gaming tables. With the advent of Indian casinos legal gambling is in everybody’s neighborhood. Is there some kind of elixir in the Las Vegas air that sabotages inhibitions just by visiting Las Vegas? Twice a year my bowling league holds their season ending sweepers in the Sin City. These are folks that I’ve bowled with for years and I have a fair idea what they do in Las Vegas. Almost to a person they do the same thing in Las Vegas, that is; they play the machines, see a show, and avail themselves of the many great eateries. In other words they are who they are and Vegas doesn’t cause them to step outside their inhibitions. So what is going on here? What is the commercial saying? Is it just a marketing ploy, and if so, what is being marketed? Surely it can’t be wild sex, that is, unless you can do it in the street or something equally as wild. Is something real being marketed or does the ad simply cater to what is perceive as the fantasy that is prevalent across society? First, as sexual beings, we are products of the human reproductive process. Nature has so conspired that if two fertile beings of opposite sex were isolated on an island they would in all likely hood mate and produce offspring. This is with no sexual education of any kind other than what is coded in the DNA. It’s also highly likely that it would have been a teenage pregnancy and certainly out of wedlock. Let’s face it, the human reproductive process is smart. It’s

30

seductive in nature and rewards those that succumb to its inducements. It monitors adolescence and at exactly he right moment it inflicts the unsuspecting with puberty. This is a time of dread for many parents because they still remember their trip through the puberty/young adult sexual zone. They remember those awakening feelings: the masturbation, sneak touches, light petting, necking and finally partner sex. This seems the natural way of things so why is anything having to do with sex so hush and to a large extent taboo as a subject? Why do parents have such difficulty explaining the most fundamental process, that of birth? Why is pornography so dangerous it has to be suppressed and confined to Rarees? In spite of the cultural phobias, societies are obsessed with sex. Sex is used to sell everything from cars to diapers, from burgers to Las Vegas hotel rooms, from jewelry to movies. Every month, there is a new product on the market promising youth and glamour. It is common for magazines to have large beauty section; advertisers are willing to pay big bucks for glossy ads of make up and cosmetics. Men and women seem willing to pay any ridiculous amount for the latest magical potion. Each year’s new fashions are awaited with bated breath, and they never disappoint as each succeeding years they get uglier and more expensive. The situation is so weird you could probably sell burlap bags for thousands simply by making it revealing and calling it a Christian Dior original. The more revealing and daring the greater the appeal. Sex also sells at the adult entertainment. In the New York Times magazine, author, Frank Rich, suggests that pornography is bigger than any of the major league sports, perhaps bigger than Hollywood. Porn is “no longer a sideshow to the mainstream…it is the mainstream,” he says. How can this be? A 10 billion-dollar industry needs customers to flourish. An Satorimagazine.com

industry this big has to have wide spread support from your every day citizen. Children are introduced to he importance of looking good and sex appeal at a very early age. Its not uncommon to see girls barely in their teens fully decked out with makeup and already trying to look sexy. Jon Bennett Ramsey was an extreme example of this phenomenon. Breast augmentation, at one time restricted to those over 18, is now common at an earlier age and is popular as a high school graduation present. Short skirts, tight pant, bare mids and plunging necklines have invaded the high school campus leaving a void where forced modesty once dwelled. Sexual permissiveness in modern society is illusionary. Madison Avenue knows the real story; hence those Las Vegas ads promising an atmosphere where every thing goes. In spite of the relative laxness of today’s norms and standards, with few exceptions, sex is repressed in every culture varying only by degree. In almost every culture pre-martial sex and extra-martial sex is prohibited. Measures to enforce prohibition vary by culture and includes religious teachings, family pressure, peer pressure and in some instances, governmental enforcement. This is especially true in Islamic states where punishment for pre-martial or extramartial sex can include public flogging and or death by stoning. Although punishments are not as extreme, many states use the power of government to enforce the moral behavior of its citizens. Fornication laws, laws prohibiting sodomy and laws prohibiting adultery were once prevalent in the US; however, there are still US states where these laws exist; even though most have been invalidated by the US Supreme Court. It was the repression of gambling that first sent gamblers to Las Vegas and it’s society’s repression of sex that will keep Las Vegas a popular destination.

Fire Escape Planning Fire Escape Planning Starts with Having a Plan

“If your primary exit is blocked by smoke, heat or flames, you’ll need to use a second way out, possibly a window” said Chris Filardi, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Werner Ladder. “Making sure everyone knows the exit options and how to use a built-in fire escape ladder if necessary could, ultimately, save a life in an emergency.” There are more than 70 million two-tothree-story homes in the United States, according to a 2007 U.S. Census Bureau American Housing Survey, yet surprisingly, research by HSC reveals that only six percent of U.S. homes own a fire escape ladder. “Many families don’t realize that a fire can go from first spark to deadly levels in as few as three minutes, leaving families little time to escape,” said Home Safety Council President Meri-K Appy. “In situations when getting out of the home quickly is critical to survival, a fire escape ladder may be one of the most important home improvement steps a caregiver can take.” The HSC and Werner Ladder are urging

Homes With Two Or More Stories Should Be Equipped With A Fire Escape Ladder n 2008, fire departments responded to 403,000 home fires in the United States, yet, a recent survey by the Home Safety Council (HSC) reveals that less than half (37 percent) of respondents have taken any actions to prevent home fires. In response, HSC and Werner Ladder are partnering to encourage families to prepare for a home fire by developing an emergency escape plan and to make sure secondand third- story exits are equipped with fire escape ladders. Families may consider an innovative built-in ladder as an option.

families to work together to develop a fire escape plan. They can start by drawing a floor plan of their home, including all rooms, windows, doors, stairways, fire escapes and smoke alarms, and indentifying two ways out of every room. In some cases a window may be the only way to escape a fire. In this situation, families should have a fire escape ladder that is easy to use and is long enough to reach the ground. Once the plan is in place, it is just as important that families practice fire drills at least twice a year. As part of their fire drill exercises, families should remember to practice deploying the fire escape ladder to the ground. To practice, extend the escape ladder and climb up a few rungs from the bottom. This will give each family member a sense of what it feels like to be on the ladder while preventing an unnecessary fall. Only use the ladder for an exit in an actual emergency. If you have infants or children too young to escape independently, keep a front facing baby carrier near the window so an adult can escape with the baby and have both hands free to hold the ladder. To learn more about developing a fire escape plan and choosing a fire escape ladder for a home, visit the Home Safety Council at http://www.homesafetycouncil. org/MySafeHome/msh_wernerladder_ w001.asp to Werner Ladder Feature Page and Werner Ladder at www. wernerfireescapeladder.com. By starting to practice fire safety now, families can ensure they will be prepared throughout the year to exit their home safely in the event of a fire.

Specifically, with power tools, there are some best practices to keep in mind while using your lithium-ion power products: •

Avoid running the battery down to zero power. The battery should also be partially charged during storage and returned to the charger after use.

Store batteries in cool temperatures (between 40-70 degrees). Avoid hot conditions like attics, cars, sheds and direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

This technology provides extra power, so now you can complete household drilling and screwing tasks like hanging photos, installing closet organizers and assembling furniture with ease.

Recycle The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation’s (RBRC) Call2Recycle program makes it easy to recycle your rechargeable batteries. Just return them to participating national retailers. For the closest location, or for information on how you can serve as a collection point, visit www.rbrc.org, or call 1-800-8-Battery. For more information, visit www. blackanddecker.com.

The U.S. teen birth rate hit an all-time low in 2009 – a decline that stunned experts. The birth rate for teenagers fell to 39 per 1,000 girls, ages 15 through 19, according to a government report released December 21, 2010. It was a 6 percent decline from the previous year, and the lowest rate since health officials started tracking that data in 1940. But experts acknowledge they can only speculate as to cause. That’s not surprising since none were able to explain an uptick in the teen birth rate in 2006 and 2007.
