• Jamalpur is a notified area at the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat spread for 10 Sq.km • It is located at 23.0° N, 72.35° E. • The main approach to the site is through Jagannath road which is a major road connecting inside and outside the city. • The site is a storehouse of landmarks and trigger points like Jamalpur vegetable and flower market, Sanskar Kendra, Tagore hall, Jagannath temple, Baba luilui masjid, NID, Calico mill land, Sabarmati riverfront development.
The Sabarmati riverfront came in 2012 as a development that brings in Environmental improvement, Social infrastructure and Sustainable development. A project that provided a meaningful waterfront and a unique identity to the city in the global platform.
The Flower market of Jamalpur is famous and is an identity to the place. It function 24 hours and supplies flower through out the city and outside the city too.
The vegetable market of Jamalpur is an important trigger point and defines the character of the site. It involves trade of vegetables in and out of Ahmedabad. It is the driving factor of the site and the study area in particular.
The Jagannath temple is more than 500 years old and has a rich heritage value. Infact the land for Jamalpur market was donated by the temple. Festials are celebrated with grandeur, Jal yathra and Rath yatra being the prominent ones.
One stretch of the Jagannath road is lined with wooden workshops that produces cots and door frames. They spill out on the road due to lack of proper facilities to store. They are also an eye sore in the site due to poorly designed and maintained structures.
The transport house is also in the study area so as another half a dozen buildings belonging to AMC. This is also a warehouse to station and to maintain AMTC buses.

• The timeline of development at the site started from the Jagannath temple in 1500’s - Calico Mill in 1880- Jamalpur Market in 1948- Sanskar Kendra in 1954- NID in 1961- Flyover in 2010 and Sabarmati Riverfront in 2012. • The demographics of the site shows the congestion of the place • Total Population - 66246, Male- 33612, Female32734 • Total households- 12459. Such high concentration of population implies the lack of space to expand hence every available space must be utilised wisely. • Total literate population- 53674 (81.15% of the population ie. more than the national average) • The traffic plays a vital role in the site, the market attracts a huge amount of traffic for its trade. A survey done on site at various times of the day show the pattern of traffic and peak hour density • Two wheelers- 310 Nos./hr @ 5km/hr between 8am-10 am and 6pm to 8pm • Auto rickshaws- 68 Nos./hr @ 4km/hr between 9am-11 am and 5pm-7pm • Four wheelers- 34 Nos./hr @ 4km/hr between 8am10 am and 6pm to 8pm • Heavy vehicles/ trucks- 4 Nos./hr @4km/hr between 3am-6am and 2pm to 4pm • It can be seen that the traffic pattern is not constant and varies according to time and the activites on site.

The informal market of Jamalpur The junction under the flyover also is an important activity trigger. has prominance, it has ample width The sectore functions throughout to carry the traffic but is poorly the day and the patter of activity managed and hence the congestion. changes fron vegetable vending to a It connects the four axis and forms food street based on time. a major spine in connecting the city internally and externally.
11
While one half of the flyover is overused for the market activities, the other hlaf of the flyover is completely neglected and left to decay. Encroachments by the homeless and public defecation are serious issues.
Inferences The activites of whole sale trade over a wide area, transit connections in and out of state, informal vending activities, religious connections and magnets, development, etc,. showcase a charater of NETWORKS going on in the site. This idea is taken forward and decided that the flyover, a key tool to networks and connectivity and solve its issues from various perspectives. The underdeck space of the flyover is generally neglected whereas it can be put to productive use.

(Under the Fly-Over) • In an attempt to de-congest the traffic, cities today see a lot of flyovers being constructed, but as we solve the problem of traffic we create another volume of space under the flyover that is hardly used. • The space under the flyover has always been a neglect where no activities take place whatsoever. • In the worst case these spaces are used for antisocial activities, generally the condition of these spaces are unhygenic and unsafe. • At a place like Jamalpur even a small piece of land has a huge value due to congestion, this makes the underdeck space a viable option to solve vaious issues in the site.
The space under the flyover is appropriated for parking except the space given for vending with the plinths. Spaces are used near the market for parking. This is a good strategy and result which can be followed in the future proposals. Unfortunately the space under the flyover which does not have enough headroom is misused to dump garbage. This has to be tackled and proper amenities to be given to vendors to dispose off these gaarbage.
1
• The market space is vibrant and the place transforms from a wide access road from the Sardar bridge to a narrow congested road infront of the maret. • The informal vending spaces spills out to the road obstructing traffic. • Hawking and vending from ground are a common sight and it happens throughout the day. • At night the place tranforms to a food street with food vending carts. • The place is appropriated based on time and need. 3
2
• The last segment of the flyover is the most neglected space in the entire stretch. • Parking happens scarcely, the space is used by hoemeless people and children. • Open defecation makes the place unhygenic, even though a toilet is located nearby it is not used. • Lack of proper lighting makes the place feel unsafe and hence not much activity happens.

Discovering the Urban residual spaces • Edge and buffer residues • Infrastructural residues • Transportational residues • Large scale plots
Exploring the residual spaces to unearth its potential • Infrastructural residue- the residual space left behind by the construction of the flyover is explored for potential
Synthesize • To take this underdeck space and arrive at a program that will address the issue of the site
Design 6
• To create a comprehensive design based on the program that can be executed on site.
• To understand the site better a series of study were done and analysed. • The building use was documented and studied to understand the nature of the site and the activities linked to it. • Traffic pattern, density and speed were studied to understand the congestion and the reason behind it. • Demographics to understand the amount of people dwelling and using the space. • Market area and the vending sectors were studied to understand the trading network and the space appropriated by them. • Time based activities were documented as the site is live 24 hours, the nature of activity at each sector of the day is studied.

• The plinths provided for vending under the flyover is sparsely used. • The centre part is completely deserted and only the fringes are used as there is no space for parking • The space is used to store the goods and sometimes for bathing too • The plinths extend into the road at points obstructing free flow of vehicles • Careless planning of spaces is seen
• There is an AMC maintained toilet under the deck right after the junction • It is equipped with 2 WC and 5 urinals for male and 5 WC for female • This is under used as the male tend to use the space behind to defecate in open as it is pay and use • There is an AMC store behind to keep street furniture and barricades, this is deserted and not used at all and is wasting away. 4

• While one half of the flyover in front of the market is heavily used for hawking and vending, the other half is completely negelected. • Henace there is a huge change in usage in a span of 500m and the entire character of the place changes • Careless planning and execution has led to congestion in the place.

Vehicular traffic is an issue in the site, as there is no right of way for the vehicles and pedestrians. The hawking and vending also takes place on the IIM road flyover road sometimes leading to spilling of activities into the road. All issues ultimately leading to congestion. Hence each activity can be decentralised and evenly distributed to have a hassel free commute and shopping. The IIM road flyover utilizes the underdeck space effectively by enclosing them with two linear multipurpose spaces. The design is simple, elegant, takes maximum space for usage and cannot be misused for any antisocial activities. The ends are protected with planters and the right of way for Mapping of time based activity the pedestrians and vehicles is ensured.

Matunga Flyover @ Mumbai Satish Chandran This is a special case of development where the government had a very minimalS.role. The residents of Mathunga and Dadar gave a comprehensove PA103616 proposal for the development of the flyover and took it forward to establishment. The idea is a huge success and the other flyover are also seeking Foundation Studio a similar make over.

The proposal is radical, firstly the periphery is contained. The design has a jogging/walking track, skating rink, basketball courts, green spaces, amphitheatre, seatings, flower garden and also a museum displaying the pictures of old Mumbai. The design is simple, efficient and universal, as it caters to all age groups, classes and sex.

A strong local leadership is required to encourage the importance of public spaces Vision is very important, since the wilingness to change the area to context can help in creating great neighborhoods Identifying the dead spaces in the area and using the fall potential of that place using the community in the process helps a lot Key to great public spaces is people if people are involved in creating public spaces we get great public spaces!

The idea was to accomodate the vending facilities and spaces in the design area along with other facilities to activate the dead spaces. Also due to the time based nature of activity the spaces designed has to accomodate varied functions. Hence a makeshift design was thought of where the designed spaces can be used for vending, seating, makeshift sleeping shelter, play area with play equipments and other functions based on need. This can transform the space into one of the active and properly used ones. Only regulation of activities may not work, the space has to be used by the people for their convenience and not hinder the traffic, only the space is provided appropriation hence can happen organically.
