iles Kane is set to release his eagerly awaited debut album, ‘Colour of the Trap’ in May on Columbia Records.

another guest: French actress Clémence Poésy, best known for her roles in In Bruges and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire.

Recorded in London with Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip) and San Francisco with Dan The Automator (Gorillaz, Kasabian), ‘Colour of the Trap’ is a glorious exploration into the darker corners of vintage pop, psych and blue-eyed soul sounds by Miles; half boy-next-door, half charisma-firework, all instantly loveable star quality.

‘Rearrange’ is a finger-snapping instant classic complete with guitar effects of which Joe Meek would be proud - a reference Kane happily accepts. “A friend of mine did say it was like the modern day Telstar in a weird way.”

Starting work on the album in the famous Konk Studios in Hornsey, this natural frontman went on to bunker down with producer Dan Carey in Streatham for four action packed weeks. The Wirral bred singer songwriter then travelled to the West Coast of the United States to hook up with Dan The Automator, who lent additional production to the lithe, lean R&B flavoured funk of ‘Come Closer’, the album’s first fully available single (out now). The infectious ‘Rearrange’ as well as the erudite groove of ‘Counting Down The Days’ were also honed with the Gorillaz collaborator. For such a stellar record, it’s perhaps fitting that this 12 track collection boasts an all-star cast. Miles’ Last Shadow Puppets sparring partner and full time Arctic Monkey Alex Turner worked with Miles on the aptly named ‘Telepathy’, while Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys provides backing vocals throughout the album and co-wrote the turbulent moody blues of ‘Kingcrawler’. Noel Gallagher appears as well, helping out with harmonies on ‘My Fantasy’. The breathy, psychedelic romance ‘Happenstance’ features S | 6 | March 2011

Further knowing nods to musical greats feature in ‘Better Left Invisible’, which opens with a direct and purposeful reboot of the riff from John Lennon’s ‘Cold Turkey’, while ‘Inhaler’ is a tribute to one of Miles’ favourite acts – Los Angeles’ psychedelic garage group Bonniwell Music Machine. Very much a modern man, most of Miles’ accomplished material comes in the form of love songs, lyrically encompassing everything from the sleazy and seductive to the fragile and heartfelt. Joined by a brand new band, featuring Jay Sharrock from The Sand Band on drums, singer-songwriter Eugene McGuinness on rhythm guitar, Ben Parsons and Phil Anderson from Cherry Ghost on keyboards and bass guitar respectively, ‘Colour of the Trap’ is just as scintillating live as it is on record. Finishing his own acclaimed 13 date headline tour of the UK in February, Miles Kane also supported Liam Gallagher’s new band, Beady Eye, on six sold out UK dates in March and will be appearing as special guest to Arctic Monkeys at their two Don Valley Stadium shows in June. And as any fan of Karaoke in London will tell you, Lucky Voice on Soho’s Poland Street is the place to head. Now the people behind Lucky Voice (notably Martha Lane Fox, the young tycoon who set up lastminute.com) have gone a step further in their bid to spread karaoke beyond Poland Street. BROOKES BROTHERS S

ince they first burst onto the scene with their own unique brand of highly charged, uplifting dance floor drum & bass there are few who can deny the impact the Brookes Brothers have had in creating the current wave of feel-good music that perpetuates throughout the D&B movement. As we get set for their incredible debut self-titled album the BBK clan unleash one final single taken from it, and what a release to set us up for possibly the biggest drum & bass album of its kind this year! ‘Beautiful’ is pure, unadulterated Brookes Brothers at their best. Dripping with sumptuous

orchestration and soaring vocals from none other than the legendary Robert Owens, it’s been raising roofs for those few DJs that have been lucky enough to be given it already. An outrageously cool halftime intro, disco synths, Owens’ vocal and gorgeous piano riff all combine over the tough beats and bass to create yet another sunshine stormer from the Brookes. This one parts clouds, believe! Moving on and the brothers give us something very different but equally joyous; ‘Souvenir’ is an oldskool rush full of ethereal pads and twinkling fx that drip over shuffling breaks and a bassline that harks back to the golden years of the jungle days. Jazz sensibilities drop in throughout and pave the way to a breakdown to make your spine tingle. Awe-inspring stuff indeed. S

he site is on the outskirts of Leiria, in a high position overlooking the city.

The functions are banal: a house divided in private area with bedrooms, and social area with living-rooms. The private areas are at street level under the plot, around a central courtyard with rooms opening to private patios in a intimate environment. The living rooms are around a void, that collects light from above and gazes the castle at the city centre.

S | 12 | March 2011

The house is a recognizable archetype emptied of its centre by the light designed by a three heighted courtyard that opens horizontally at the garden level. The bedroom courtyards, revealed in the garden, relate with this archetypal object providing different readings on its scale. Scale and volume are controlled in a chaotic context, with a clear identity that from its core relates with the historical legacy far away: the Leiria Castle. S AiresMateus.com

Coral Reef

ocated off the coast of Cancun, Mexico, artist Jason deCaires Taylor has created an incredible artificial reef of statues he calls the Silent Evolution. A compelling installation that took several months to complete, Silent Evolution embodies a spirit that shifts between sadness and awe, all while reminding us of the intricate relationship between man and nature.

We probably don’t have to mention the life-threatening conditions natural reefs are under today due to human behavior. However, artificial reefs, which are quite a new phenomenon, have proved to be a very good alternative as they are durable, environmentally friendly and offer relief to the natural ones as they can regenerate. With 400 life-size human sculptures installed 9 meters below sea level, Silent Evolution plays many roles, but it is foremost an artificial reef encouraging the growth of marine life. Taylor’s sculptures are created with a pH-neutral concrete, reinforced with fiberglass, which (surprisingly) attracts marine life. Taylor also ‘rescues’ coral damaged in storms or by humans, and replants these on his sculptures. S | 14 | March 2011

In all its beauty there’s something a bit eerie about The Silent Evolution. Is it the closed eyes, the surrounding blue hue of the sea, or perhaps the emotions the lifeless sculptures still seem to express? There’s a strong feeling of hope in the work, even though the physical structure of the sculptures look as though the people have been tied together. Taylor’s message can be read in many different ways and voices, but what he does succinctly is to remind us of our close relation to – and not to mention dependency on – nature. These types of underwater projects have made Jason deCaires Taylor both a name and reputation. With a background in graffiti art and scuba diving, Taylor developed an interest for the relationship between art and the environment early on, and now creates pieces that both long-lasting and intellectually challenging. Moreover, his thoughtful placement in the shallow and crystal-clear waters of The National Marine Park of Cancun, Mexico, makes the piece very accessible to divers and tourists. Lauren Stucky was not bound by any pre conceived notion of what a collection should be. She was lead by her own artistic freedom to engineer her first Women’s collection for Spring 2011. In a world of magnetic forces and dimensional hysteria, she harnessed her capabilities and delivered a collection true to her standards of style.

Based in Los Angeles, but her designs are a timeless with a European edge, Lauren Stucky’s exciting new line that captures a luxe look but always with a rock edge with her primary use of leather, silk chiffon, and lace creates an effortless look. With this template, fashion has endless possibilities. Her refined edge offers sexy, casual dressing that can easily transform into nighttime glam.

Lauren has spent the greater part of her life growing up in Portland, Oregon. She moved to Los Angeles straight out of high school in 2005 and attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) majoring in Fashion Design. Just a year after graduating she debuted her Spring 2011 collection. Her inspirations are from the years among the fluid nature and beauty of Portland to the tempestuous mystery of LA. remont designer Devin Carlson showed bell-bottom pants, high waisted shorts, metallic knits, alongside more rugged pieces like fitted leather jackets, blanket coats and plaids in Fremont’s Fall 2011 show that included apparel for both men and women. With on-trend references, Carlson’s inspiration was subtle. Carlson noted that he was originally inspired by the book Into Thin Air, which takes place mostly in cold weather accounting for the repeat appearance of quilting in his Fall 2011 collection. Dry waxing was also used to to give a frozen appearance to some of the fabrics with sheer animal prints spotted in the show. There were plenty of wholly, wearable individual, casual pieces in the collection. FremontApparelCo.com

ower, confidence, and elegance of fencing are the inspirations guiding The Battalion’s designer Linda Wong’s collection. Jackets have higher robust collars and strong powerful shoulders to set the tone. Confidence is required to turn a defense into an attack. Lace is used where protective chain mail would normally armor. Short dresses worn over long dresses create unexpected layering and add to the hemline. The Battalion uniform is an interesting tee with an edgy jacket or vest over skinny pants. This season, all tees are soft stretchy lace tops to add texture, and to provide something new to the style-seeking modern woman whom we humbly dress. Garments are made from Eco fleece, big loop terry (recycled cotton), cupro (regenerated cellulose fiber) and dead stock fabrics. The Battalion is against fur trade. They want to show customers that faux fur is just as beautiful and luxurious. The Battalion is also an active member of 1% for the Planet. TheBattalion.us
