LESA AMOORE

Lesa began her career in imagery as a model, and has appeared on the covers of Vogue, Photo and Elle. Amoore’s first cover as a photographer was published shortly after she began shooting in 2010. With a black & white style that is both modern and classic at once, Amoore’s evolving body of work is an alluring mix of reality and fantasy, street photography and fashion imagery, darkness and light. BENJO ARWAS

Born in Israel, Tel Aviv, Benjo’s main profession before becoming a photographer was serving in the Israeli Army for 5 years. After the army, Benjo’s passion for photography began as he was traveling around the world and since then has never put his camera in its case. Inspired by fashion, beauty of the human being, Europe, music, nature and traveling, Benjo supplies high imaginary in all sections from stills to motion picture. Benjo’s studio located in Beverly Hills, CA. BenjoArwar.com S | 2 | December 2011

Christele Jacquemin

A photographer originally from France, but settled in Murcia, she just loves travelling. Thanks to that she has learnt - and I go on learning - to realize what differentiates each culture, the details of every landscape, the way creativity opens up your mind. As she journeys she analyze all the different components of advertising, how images are used, how brands and values can be projected. And that’ s why photography is to advertising what the eye of the beholder is to the mirror: inseparable. RecreartPhotography.com

enguin Prison is back. Chris Glover, the man behind the name has a new single, ‘Fair Warning’ (from the self-titled debut album, to be released September 5th), and it’s available RIGHT NOW! Imagine, if you will, Chic produced by James Murphy; a collaboration between Prince and The Human League, or Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones remixing ‘Off The Wall’. It is some measure of Penguin Prison’s skills in the studio, on vocals and in terms of songwriting, that such illusory marvels have been achieved on this superb single as well as his self-titled collection. On ‘Fair Warning’, PP’s synthesized version of 80s disco funk soars as ever – a dance-floor filler to welcome

in the dawn. The single was mixed by Chris and Dan Grech-Marguerat (Radiohead, Scissor Sisters). Its booming beats, shimmering spectral synths and breathless honey vocals all add up to something delicious, with a treat of amazing remixes from Disco Bloodbath, Dirty Vegas, LaMond, Alex N, Club Clique, Goldroom, Squarehead and Penguin himself that have just been serviced to club. A download bundle of selected remixes has been released, much to the delight of his eager army of fans who’ve been waiting some time to hear it and they won’t be disappointed. S PenguinPrison.com

Editor London Silver

ony Viramontes was born in West LA, in 1956. He died in Los Angeles in 1988, leaving a legacyliterally thousands of drawings – of extraordinary power and attack. Tony Viramontes was born to Mexican parents. His early obsession with bull fighting, passionate interest in fashion, and preternatural gifts as a draughtsman coalesced to produce a thrillingly unrestrained drawing style. He trained at the Art Centre College of Design in LA before heading to New York where he attended first FIT, then Parsons. In New York he came to the attention of Antonio Lopez, who was an early champion, as was the designer Hanae Mori. In 1983 he moved to Paris, where his career went into orbit. He worked for Vogue, Per Lui and La Mode en Peinture; produced ad campaigns for Valentino, St. Laurent and Montana and exhibited (and S | 6 | December 2011

partied) throughout Europe and in Japan. He kept up a frenetic pace “I look for new ideas because I always want to be in a state of creative anxiety and insecurity. If I feel sure of myself I cannot be creative” he said. He began to experiment with photography and with collage, and his directional cover for Janet Jackson’s 1985 album Control, heralded a bold new phase. But, by then, Viramontes, was already ill – an early victim of the AIDS epidemic. Among his last projects was the supervision of a dazzling monograph (that would be published posthumously in Japan.) He died in Los Angeles in 1988, leaving a legacy- literally thousands of drawings – of extraordinary power and attack. S DeanRhysMorgan.com/epViramontes.php

DURAN DURAN GIRL PANIC!

Video Director Jonas Akerlund JonasAkrulund.com Editor Addison Dewitt

S

imon Le Bon says it “wasn’t easy” getting five of the world’s original supermodels together for Duran Duran’s new video, but they even managed to persuade a “very busy” Naomi Campbell. The band have unveiled their new nine-minute short film of Girl Panic! which features the models playing members of Duran Duran in a dayin-the-life-style video. Cindy Crawford plays the part of bassist John Taylor, Helena Christensen takes on drummer

Roger Taylor, Eva Herzigova is Nick Rhodes, Le Bon’s wife Yasmin is the anonymous guitarist while Naomi Campbell embodies lead singer Le Bon. The real members of Duran Duran cameo as bellhops, waiters, chauffeurs and paparazzi. Le Bon said “Cindy was the first to say yes. Naomi said, ‘yes but I’m very busy’ - that was a difficult one because she has such an incredibly full schedule.”

Bassist John Taylor admitted at the beginning of filming they were unsure what to expect from Campbell. “But I have to say she walked out there and she nailed it and you just go ‘superstar’ - that is what she is.” Filmed at London’s Savoy hotel, the film was directed by the man behind the videos for Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi and Madonna’s Ray of Light, Jonas Akerlund. The supermodels also posed in character for the front cover of Harpers Bazaar. The band, who know the supermodels well, said it was like

a big reunion for the girls. Le Bon said: “They spent so much time with each other two decades ago when they were doing shows together it was really was like a coming together.” Girl Panic! is from the band’s latest album All We Need Now. After going back on tour for the band’s US dates Le Bon says he now feels “bulletproof”. He said: “It’s a tough job, we all work really hard and you have to keep yourself in good shape.” S DuranDuran.com

ome say chic is about Audrey Hepburn- Breakfast at Tiffanys, or Jackie O and the iconic little black dress and pearls. That is all well and good, however my idea of chic is also Karen O, Bianca Jagger and Patti Smith without a doubt rock their own version of the word. Ann Demeulemeester’s amazing layered and stitched leather jacket balanced with straight-legged leather pants, accessorizing with Biba’s irredescent feather neck-piece, carrying a Jessica Grant blue python tote paired with Prada’s python and snakeskin stilettos... Fredric Reshew Editor William Montalvo Fredric is that rare American photographer to have lived and worked in Europe for over 11 years. He has worked for Arena Hommes Plus, Big, NY Times Magazine, British GQ, Details and many others. Some of his subjects have included actors and musicians such as Kanye West, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morriset, and bands like Massive Attack and Daft Punk to name a few. Fredric not only creates visceral and majestic images, but he is also an accomplished writer director and producer. Satellite: Can you tell us about the path you took to become a professional photographer? Fredric Reshew: When I was a young teenager I would cut out magazines and pictures of Peter Lindberg,Patrick Demarchelier, Richard Avedon, and paste them on my bedroom walls. But I dreamed of being a director, as well as a photographer‌ I loved images‌ I put myself through video engineering school and began working on commercials and music videos. After hurting my leg on a music video production assisting. a boom man. I picked up my still camera, which was always close at hand and S | 22 | December 2011

I shot a friends album cover. After that I never stopped shooting, I began testing models and shooting fashion for all the model agencies at the time. You were able to make a living shooting models portfolios back then. I briefly assisted but it was not for me. After 6 mos. I built up a portfolio and moved to Milan, as that was what you did back then to be great. I shot a couple campaigns and covers and came back to the states and could not get hired as my work was way to edgy. So I had to start over. Which is always a challenge. Luckily I learned in time how to balance it all out Basically living part time in Europe and the U.S. which I continue to this day.

S: Apart from absolute hard work, what would you say has been key to your business success? FR: Thick skin, and the willingness to put my ego aside in some cases, and do any job big or small to stay busy and doing what I love. S: What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started? FR: To have listened to those who came before me and made a living doing what they love. And to never waste time waiting for things to happen, but to keep moving, shooting and believing and trusting my instincts. S: Photographers are often told that they need to develop a personal style to set them apart. What would you say sets you apart from others? FR: My wife told me to say my sense of humor. ☺ S: You cross art, commercial, editorial photography and film. Is there one that you enjoy the most? FR: Honestly I enjoy them all for different reasons. But to be able to make a film with a strong message or point of view is really as good as it gets for me. S: What type of camera do you use? FR: Canon 7D mostly S: Do you rely on lighting, either natural or artificial, or do you rely on darkroom and computer manipulation? FR: Lighting As much in Camera as possible.

S: Celebrities or models on cover of magazines? FR: Models!! S: What inspires you? FR: My 3 year old daughter singing “ You are my sunshine.” S: What do you think of the photography industry at the moment and where do you see it five years from now? FR: A great quote I saw from an amazing photographer I’m a fan of (Vincent Peters.) said it all. Digital did to photography what cheap plane fares did to Spain, makes me still laugh! The industry is gasping for air. Magazines will be extinct in time. There will always be a few around but when TV and computers merge even more in the near future , things will never be the same as they aren’t now. In the future we will show up to a shoot with our I phone and that’s it.. Wait some do now. ☺ S: What advice do you have for young photographers wanting to become professionals? FR: Eat , sleep and breathe your dream. And don’t be afraid to work for free sometimes …. while you learn your craft. We all did before you… Travel as much as possible and put yourself in situations you can grow from as a photographer. Life is about experiences and the gift of photography can take you all over the world and bring you a lot of joy. It has for me. ☺ FReshew.com
