Jersey Bounce Conversation

J

ersey Bounce explores the visual “conversation” that occurs when works of art are installed in a gallery setting. Art Center Curator Mary Birmingham has invited several other NJ-based curators and collectors to collaborate with her on this exhibition. Participants include collectors Ann Schaffer and Ellyn Dennison; Alexandra Schwartz, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montclair Art Museum; Jeanne Brasile, Director of the Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University; Donna Gustafson, Andrew W. Mellon Liason for Academic Programs and Curator at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum; and Katherine Murdock, Exhibitions Manager at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Jersey Bounce opens to the public in the Main Gallery on July 29. Beginning with several key pieces of work, each participant has, in turn, chosen another work that responds in some way: formally (by composition, material, color, etc.), conceptually or by subject matter. The sequencing of these art objects creates a narrative thread linking one work to the next and forms a web of interesting connections. Featured artists: Willie Cole, Tracy Heneberger, Ho-Sup Hwang, Julia Jacquette, Laura Letinsky, Laurel Nakadate, Marlo Pascual, Ry Rocklen, David Shapiro, Cindy Sherman,

Hidemi Shimura, Alyson Shotz, Charles Spurrier, Linda Stillman, Jude Tallichet, Wahala Temi, Hank Willis Thomas, Ryan Trecartin, Josette Urso, Paul Villinski, Brent Wahl and Rachel Perry Welty. Jersey Bounce celebrates the practice of colleagues bouncing ideas off one another and documents a conversation among art lovers. The show also acknowledges the relevance and vitality of New Jersey as a site for contemporary art while honoring the Art Center’s long history of curatorial collaborations. The exhibition title is borrowed from the song Jersey Bounce, written by Tiny Bradshaw, Eddie Johnson and Bobby Plater, with lyrics by Buddy Feyne. It was a #1 hit in 1942 for the Benny Goodman Orchestra and has been recorded by countless performers including Ella Fitzgerald.

The Rhino BY MAXIMO RIERA

he Animal Chair collection constitutes a diverse range of species, from mammals to reptiles, and even including insects. Each creation retains the animal’s natural vitality whilst being totally biological accurate in their appearance. This collection is homage to these animals and the whole animal kingdom which inhabits our planet, as an attempt to reflect and capture the beauty of nature in each living thing. This unique chair design is named The Rhino Chair, designed by Spanish designer Maximo Riera and it is what we like to call a seating unit with a strong attitude. After all, it is not everyday designers choose to mix furniture with the mightiness of a rhino, while conserving its natural proportions. It is not the first time that Maximo Riera dazzles the mind with his designs. According to the designer, the project was created by using a strong inner frame along its body for stability and balance. S www.MaximoRiera.com

The weird and wonderful world of the Kenneth Bager P

ioneering dance music label Deconstruction Records are proud to announce their new signing, the legendary musician, DJ, club promoter and producer extraordinare, Kenneth Bager. Joining a roster of artists that range from Beth Ditto and Sasha to Retro/ Grade and Way Out West, Calvin Harris being the labels new A&R. Bager inked the deal with Sony Music VP of A&R and Deconstruction MD Mike Pickering, and is set for a UK release of his single ‘The Sound of Swing’ and album ‘The Sounds of...’ through the label this summer.

alongside his new club venture Home Party and DJing for P3 Radio Station (Denmark’s equivalent of Radio 1) along with his own weekly radio show at Ibiza Sonica , Kenneth spends his time producing music and running his Music For Dreams label. It was on Music For Dreams that Kenneth originally released his selfproduced album, ‘Fragments From A Space Cadet’, which garnered critical global acclaim and a Grammy nomination in Denmark. Now set for release under the title‚ The Sounds of...’ , the album has been picked up by Deconstruction Records and is set to release Sept.

His career to date has spanned over three decades. ‘Denmark’s original space cadet’, as he is referred to by Pete Tong, first made waves on the European dance music scene in the early 80s when he initiated and ran Copenhagen’s answer to London’ Shoom’, the now worldwide renowned Coma Club parties. Through the Coma Club parties Kenneth was responsible for bringing the likes of Sven Vath, Todd Terry, Paul Oakenfold, Norman Jay, Coldcut and The Orb, to Denmark for the first time. Fastforward to this decade and Kenneth Bager continues to influence many. In addition to continuing his promotion of the Coma Club parties

‘The Sounds Of...’ provides the perfect introduction to the weird and wonderful world of the Kenneth Bager experience, where Balearic electronica soundtracks scenes of decadence, beautiful women frolic in lacy underwear, white rabbits are regarded as equals and the man conducting the party is dressed as Mozart. One of the stand-out tracks on the album is the forthcoming single ’The Sound Of Swing’, a timelessly melodic summer anthem in the making which features Kenneth’s own children’s choir alongside the soulful crooning of Aloe Blacc. Nanna Van Blaaderen

S | 74 | August 2011

F

ashion designer Nanna van Blaaderen will be presenting her latest knitting designs in an exhibition at Droog in Amsterdam soon.

Her new collection, ‘Species. A Tribute’ opens on Friday, June the 18th and will remain on show until the end of the month. The new pieces are van Blaaderen’s signature autonomous textile forms, fashion designs and fabrics for interiors; a result of her collaboration with creative developer Andreas Koch. Using natural materials, textures and structures, Nanna designs textiles based on her affinity with, and respect for, nature, as well as employing a strong awareness for sustainability. ‘Species. A Tribute.’ is specifically a tribute to animals and is being presented as an alternative to fur. These ethereal lookbook images are just a hint of the breadth of shapes Nanna has manipulated soft materials into; and there are all sorts of incredible forms through which she expresses the beauty of various species.
