Understanding Your Decking Decking is now a great way to create a unique and distinctive outdoor living area. You can now add individuality to your deck, from colour preference, to the fall of the ground, creating all sorts of usable areas, which can be broken down into three key types.

Type 1 - Ground Level Please note: The sub frame isn’t usable with these decks types.

To create this type of deck, the frame is lower than the ground level, which is consequently sunken.

Type 2 - Frame Height If you’d rather not excavate the ground and just want to fit a deck, then the minimum height will be determined by the frame. Normally these types of decks sit around 150mm above ground level and because the frame is visible, fascia is used to both hide and protect it. *Option with or without Balustade.

Understanding Your Decking Type 3 - Deck at ‘x’ Level Above Ground These decks range from anything that exceeds the frame height, to balconies. With this type of deck, you need balustrading and the possibility of skirting. When you are implementing a design that includes multiple decks at varying deck heights, you need to consider how you’d move between them, the difference in frame height, and the inclusion of steps or even ramps.

The post is placed on outer corner for all rail sections. You have to use a sub frame bracket and fascia with the proper fascia board. Please note: Do not use deckboard as fascias.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ADVICE GIVEN IN THE CLEAN & CARE GUIDE MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR DECK. CAUTION: Extreme care should be taken when using hot appliances on, or near, Fitrite Fencing & Decking. Do not place hot products, such as disposable barbecues or hot electrical appliances, directly onto the deckboard or fencing as they will melt the PVC-U. Cigarette ends may also have the same effect. Patio heaters should be positioned so that the heating element is not in close proximity of any PVC-U surface. Care should also be taken when using lawn strimmers near Fitrite Fencing & Decking. PVCu surfaces may be marked or damaged by the strimmer blade / wire, especially those that are foiled.

Timber Sub Frame Instructions

Choose Correct Size & Timber • We strongly recommend that a minimum of 125mm x 50mm (5” x 2”) timber is used.

• Please note, our fascia board is 152mm deep. Any timber that is taller than 150mm, will not be covered by the fascia board.

• The timber must be of suitable use, we recommend the use of either ‘Vac-Vac’ water repellent preservative treated timber or tantalised timber, impregnated under pressure, with highly toxic substances, to protect against rot.

Design Consideration • The sub frame will need building but cannot exceed 2438mm (8ft) in length, in any direction.

• The joists must run in the opposite direction to the deckboard.

• The joist centres must not exceed 450mm (18”). This is the maximum span necessary, to ensure a solid fix for the deckboards and to eliminate any bouncing.

Fixings • Screw the outer frame to the joists using 90/100mm woodscrews, at a minimum of x3 screws per joist see (IMAGE A).

• The sub frame timber brackets are positioned in the corner of the frame as shown and fixed with 40/50mm woodscrews, at which point x8 screws are required per bracket see (IMAGE B).

Post Installation The sub frame is then lifted to the correct height and fitted onto the posts using coach bolts. These bolts are fitted through the brackets, directly into the posts. To use the brackets this way, the posts must be timber reinforced.

Please ensure that at this point and every further stage, a spirit level is used to maintain the consistency level of the deck (IMAGE C).

If the deck requires no balustrade and the posts do not exceed the height of the deck, then dummy posts are all that’s required. These posts must finish flush with the top of the sub frame. If balustrades are required, then so are full height posts. Each post must be checked at every stage to ensure that they are not out of square and are plumb.

We recommend that on a 914h (3ft) balustrade height, the posts are 1100mm above deck. This would mean on a 600mm deck height, for instance, the overall post height would be 1700mm.

When building the decking sub frame from timber, we only supply one component in this section and that is a unique bracket. This bracket allows the post to fit into the corner equally from either direction and provides symmetry in design. By doing this, you also spread the weight equally amongst all the corners.

ECO Deckboard Eco deckboard is manufactured here in the UK, using first generation recycled PVC with a virgin PVC outer skin. The unique embossed pattern gives the ECO deckboard its supreme, non-slip properties, in both dry and wet conditions.

Unlike timber and composite deckboards, Fitrite ECO deckboards do not rot or decay as they don’t contain wood. Fitrite ECO deckboards are produced with low energy input and generate nearly 80% less CO2 emissions per ton of product manufacturing.

In addition to this, the ECO deckboard is 100% recyclable, therefore making it extremely eco-friendly.

EVO Deckboard 2 Colour categories with 3m and 6m lengths*

Fitrite Evolution deckboards are made from the same recycled PVC as the ECO deckboard, with the exception of the outer skin. This is constructed using a unique blend of recycled hardwood and PVC polymer (WPC). Evolution deckboard has all the visuals and aesthetics like that of real wood.

Our manufacturing process uses a variety of quality materials from known reliable sources. The result is a WPC/PVC decking product, which is more consistent, natural looking and higher quality than normal composites. Fitrite Evolution deckboards contain natural wood fibres in its composition within the outer skin. Many types of hardwoods have a natural evolving process, where various colour changes will occur.

By developing a WPC & PVC mix in the correct ratios, we are able to control this natural process (see page 16). After a 6-8 week evolution cycle, the EVO deckboard will stabilize to its naturally enhanced colour.

How Are Fitrite Evolution Deckboards Made?

Fitrite Evolution deckboards are manufactured using a complex process and blend of materials.

The construction of the deckboard, is what we refer to as a twin extrusion, which means that there are two parts to the process, but these are manufactured as one, giving us all the benefits that are associated with the different materials used.

The main body of the deckboard is made out of a high quality recycled PVCu, which has been quality tested to meet our astringent criteria, prior to being used in our product. This ensures that we only use the correct materials and ensure we have control over the quality of our finished product, unlike some other brands on the market today.

The top layer of the deckboard (the skin), is made from a blend of recycled hardwood, and this is blended with a PVC polymer, to give the material mix that we have developed, enabling us to produce this unique product.

Why Are Fitrite Evolution Deckboards Hollow?

Over the years we have manufactured both hollow and solid boards.

During our continued research and development, we came to realise that a well engineered hollow board using PVC materials, can offer more advantages and an overall improved quality and better performance.

We have seen and heard all the arguments on comparing these against each other, however most of these are based on a pure composite board. Fitrite Evolution deckboards are not composite boards and therefore offer alternative, unsurpassed levels of performance.

The design of the Fitrite Evolution deckboards has been proven to make them extremely resistant to impact damage and this has been independently confirmed by our accreditations to British Standards - Static Load Test (BS6399 Pt 1), Wear Resistance (BSEN660-2).

We are also accredited for Fire Resistance (BS476 Pt 7) and Slip Resistance (BS7976-2).

Unlike some other brands, we offer our unique Fitclip, which is manufactured from Stainless Steel 316SS Grade. This offers a none visible fixing system, that will not affect the overall strength of the product, making installation simpler. The Fitclip will not rust and looks aesthetically pleasing. It’s a far better solution, than screwing through the deckboards!

Controlled Natural Weathering What Does This Mean?

Our manufacturing process uses a variety of quality materials from known reliable and ethical sources.

The result is a WPC/PVC decking product which is more consistent, more natural looking and higher quality than normal composites.

Fitrite Evolution deckboards contain natural wood fibres in its composition within the outer skin. Many types of hardwood have a natural evolving process, which can be effected by various conditions from location, temperature and light differences.

Due to this wood content, controlled natural colour evolvement will occur. It’s effectively a natural weathering process, a conclusion of

the technology used during the manufacturing of the board itself. Over a 6 to 8 week period, subject to conditions and location, differences in temperature and light, the board’s lifecycle and natural weathering process is affected. The board essentially goes from light to dark and reverts back to light again, before eventually stopping. Hence the name EVOlution deckboard, which is totally different to other decking products, which never stops fading!!

Fitclip The benefits of the Fitclip are as follows: • They can be used on either ECO or EVO ranges • They are specially designed for fast, clean installation • They are great for automatic spacing • They create a smooth finish, with no sharp edges • It enables a small gap to be left, providing air flow between the board and timber frame.

Deckboard Installation Each deck brings with it, its own unique design. For the most professional finish, its best to start from the outer edge of the deck and work back towards the caravan or building. This is, however, determined by the direction of the deck. The deckboard needs to be cut to length.

We recommend measuring the sub frame size, plus an additional 50mm per side for overhang. This overhang is to ensure enough cover for the fascia board to be fitted and the deck finishes flush with the posts (IMAGE D).

The first deckboard is fitted by screwing directly through the sub frame at an angle or using a suitable bonding solution. You must ensure that this board is level before fitting, as this board dictates the run of every other board. With the design feature of our grooved deckboard, the recommended fitting method is using the Fitrite Fitclip (IMAGE E).

Once the board is in position, fit a clip on the board on the outer legs and every joist (max 450mm centre). The clips will push in, but it is easier if a rubber mallet is used. There will be times where you will need to cut around posts and this is achievable with the use of a jigsaw.

The clips are now ready to be secured to the sub frame, using the correct screw for steel or timber. Ensure that the torque setting on your driver is correct.

If the screws are over tightened then this will cause either the clip or boards to not sit square and is essential for the board to fit together easily and quickly. When all the clips are fixed to the sub frame, the next board can be lifted into position. Again, the use of a rubber mallet will make the board easier to fit. Carry on along the deck, fitting each board as required (IMAGE F).

When all the boards are fitted, the design of the clips enables the board to be tapped level, making the fitting of the edge trim easier. Once all the board are fitted, check that the deck is even and doesn’t creak. The edge and infil trims are simply cut to size and fitted (IMAGE G).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Balustrade sections are done to 2 specific heights (distance between the top of the deck and the top of the hand rail). The governing factor is the height of the deck above ground level. For decks up to 1metre above ground level, the hand rail will be at a standard 914mm above the deck, however, for decks above 1metre the handrail must site at 1100mm above the deck. This difference of height affects the length of the picket / spindle required.

Balustrade Reinforcement The balustrade reinforcement (U channel) is used for all the balustrade designs, to give extra strength and stability to both the top and bottom rails. Galvanised steel means it won’t rust and is slid into place, when putting together the balustrade panels.

Handrail Brackets Mechanically fixed, the handrail bracket family allows a simple but strong solution to the installation of the Fitrite balustrade system.

Commonly, four screws are used to fix the bracket to the post and then four further fixings to the rail (standard only). All, with exception of the glass bracket, can be done in matching colours to the rails. The angle wizards allow fast installation for creating either various shapes of decks or inclines of steps and ramps.

Balustrade Installation

For the correct balustrade length, measure between the posts, internal to internal, then take 15mm off this size. This is to accommodate the brackets. Take the bottom rail and turn it downside and mark the rail at the midway point. This is where the foot block needs to be positioned.

Using a reinforcing screw, fit the foot block to the underside of the rail, ensuring a fix into the rail reinforcing is achieved (IMAGE H). The rail is then turned over. Fit the bracket backs on either end of the rail and sit the bracket covers on the rail. Then sit the rail onto the deck, on the foot block between the posts. This now makes it easier to mark for your brackets. Put your spirit level on the rail to ensure that everything is square and mark where the bottom brackets are on the post. With this mark in place, remove the rail and fit the brackets against the marks (IMAGE 1). The bottom rail can now be fitted into position.

With the bottom rail in place, fit all the pickets into the routered holes provided. Then fit the bracket backs onto the top rail and sit the bracket covers on the rail and fit the top rail onto the pickets. With the top rail on the pickets in place and the bottom rail fitted, the balustrade should be level. Just put the spirit level on to be sure. Mark for the top brackets on the post. Now the entire balustrade can be lifted out to fit the top brackets. Remember, pressure must be maintained on both the top and bottom rails, to ensure that the balustrade doesn’t fall apart.

With the top rail brackets fitted, lift the balustrade into position and sit it into the brackets. With the balustrade fitted, put pressure onto the rails and screw through the side of the bracket to secure. Ensure that the rails sit flush into the brackets. If the rails are proud, then the bracket cover will not fit. Once this is complete, the bracket covers can be fitted over the bracket backs.

Fascia is the use of a single board that covers the timber frame.

Skirting is the “infil” used between the bottom of the fascia and the ground.

Hinges & Latches For Gates On certain designs, whether it’s the top of steps, separating pools or water areas, sometimes there is the necessity to create controllable access areas and this is done by adding gates to your design. Matching gates to the balustrades can be created, normally by using the profile from the bottom rail all round. Gates are assembled at our factory and welded for added strength. Combining these with our tension controlled hinges, allows a nice finish to these areas. Limitations – certain pickets can not be used.

Gate Installation The Fitrite gate is fully bespoke and can be fitted easily. The gate needs to be made to the width of your opening (internal post to internal post) with an additional 30mm for the gate hardware. Firstly decide which way the gate is to hang and to open. Once this has been decided, measure to fit the hinges. This wants to be the same difference from the top of the gate to the top of the top hinge and the bottom of the gate to the bottom of the hinge (IMAGE J). There is no set distance, as this is mainly down to customer preference and aesthetics. The hinges simply fit tight to the gate frame and are screwed into position (IMAGE K).

Hang the gate in position on the post so the top of the gate is in line with the balustrade. The hinges fit securely to the post and are screwed into position. The hinges are self-closing and care must be taken when fitting, that the gate doesn’t slam shut.

The final procedure is to fit the gate latch. This is basically the same as the hinges. Position the latch onto the post at the desired height. Once this is placed, then the latch pin is simply fitted to the gate. Care must be taken that the latch pin engages correctly into the latch (IMAGE L).

Steps Steps Are Easy To Create • Create the desired framework out of timber.

• Use 102mm post and deck boards as normal.

• Install the deck board as usual, with outer edge piece first.

• Use fascia board, fixed angle to clad the steps and sides.

• Use fascia for skirting step sides.

• Use fixed angle to tidy up corners.

• Use stair brackets or up and down angle wizards depending on how steep the steps incline is.

We recommend that each tread height is no taller than 150mm. This makes 6” x 2” timber ideal for the step sub frame. The depth of the steps are calculated as per the table below. Dependent on what height deck you have, depends on how many treads you require.

For instance, a 600mm deck height, would require a 3 tread step, which leaves 150mm for the last step onto the deck.

For the correct balustrade length, measure between the posts (internal to internal). Then take 15mm off this size. This is to accommodate for the brackets. The rails must have the ends cut at a 30 degree angle to enable flush fitting against the posts.

The bracket backs are fitted in position and the top and bottom rails should line through with the balustrade rails at the top of the stop.

Once the bracket backs are in position, then the balustrade is fitted in the same way as the deck balustrade, apart from the foot block, as this is not required.

Ramp Installation The installation of the ramp rails uses the same principal fitting as the other balustrades, with the only difference being the bracket. The ramps use an angle wizard to enable the balustrade to run at the same pitch as the deck. The balustrades are deducted slightly more to accommodate these brackets. Instead of a 15mm deduction, we use a 115mm deduction overall. Normally the pitch for the ramps is approximately 6 degrees. As the deduction is greater on the balustrades, these bracket types have to be specified so that the end spacing of the rails can be set correctly when ordering.

Lighting Lighting is the perfect way to make an outdoor area more versatile, whether to create focus to an area or to simply illuminate walk ways and entrances. DECKBOARD with Fitrite Max

FOILED SURFACE

General cleaning

Dry sweep with a soft bristled brush and pressure wash at no more than 1200 PSI, using a fan tip. Use Fitrite Max prior to jetwash.*

Wash with a soft sponge and warm soapy water. Use Fitrite Max as instructed.*

Mould and Mildew

Do not place hot products, such as disposable barbecues or hot electrical appliances, directly onto the deckboard or fencing as they will melt the PVC-U. Cigarette ends may also have the same effect. Patio heaters should be positioned so that the heating element is not in close proximity of any PVC-U surface. Care should also be taken when using lawn strimmers near Fitrite Fencing & Decking. PVCu surfaces may be marked or damaged by the strimmer blade / wire, especially those that are foiled. *FITRITE MAX SHOULD BE USED REGULARLY IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN AND CARE FOR YOUR DECK. YOUR WARRANTY COULD BE EFFECTED IF NOT USED AS RECOMMENDED AND INSTRUCTED.
