Masterplan within High Street Context The Play Yard - Nursery - Family Housing

The project focuses on ‘re-thinking the high street’ of Falkirk whereby there will be an incorporation of intergenerational housing and supporting community uses within the group masterplan on the given site.

The project urges critical analysis and thinking in reviving the high street from new perspectives.

Our initial research was concentrated on the aspects of transportation, green spaces and character of the space within Falkirk. Futher research was then conducted on the neighbouring towns in identifying and establishing each of their relationship with the town of Falkirk.

After conducting critical analysis of the area, we have decided to include a few different building functions within our masterplan.

The current masterplan includes family housing, extra-care housing, intergenerational workshops, cafes, a nursery and a well-being centre.

Initial Sketches of Space

As the site is located on the edge of the High Street at the east end, there was not much pedestrian footfall besides teenagers making use of the Riggs as a recreational space for skateboarding.

Being on the east end, the site is quite remote and isolated from the rest of the High Street.

This has then triggered the design approach to integrate a communal sense within the site in order to establish a stronger link with the High Street.

With the introduction of these green spaces, hierarchy and sequence of spaces can then be planned and controlled according to function.

Consumer-related services are located on the street front as a continuation from the High Street; cafe, health food store, sports equipment store.

The internal courtyard acts as a breathing space for walks and for rest for both residents and the public.

Ranging from two-storey shoplots to a retail centre and a multi-storey carpark, the site is surrounded by buildings with vast height differences.

Besides that, the scheme seeks to provide the user with control over the external conditions in achieving one’s personal level of comfort.

Lastly, the scheme intends to incorporate the well-being aspect into the experience of the building through the choice of materials used; creating an atmosphere that is invigorating and robust.

By removing the asphalt and concrete ground layer, this then enables a clear strategy to incorporate green courtyard spaces within the scheme.

My building integrates a wellbeing centre with extra-care housing.

With the notion of the building being a well-being centre, one of the architectural intents of the scheme is to not just enable the user to get to a destination efficiently, but allowing the user to walk through the building as a journey as well.

Since the site was formerly a bus station, the site is primarily laid with asphalt and concrete; creating a harsh ground texture.

As the residences are extra-care housing units, constructing a circulation route that provides clear direction and orientation for the residents is vital.

An open-air deck circulation route was designed which not only allows access from each housing unit to communal facilities as well as visual connectivity to the courtyard, but also encourages walking around the building, vertically and horizontally; emphasising on the aspect of well-being.

The housing units are arranged in a grid system that allows permeability, achieving natural ventilation and natural illumination through the use of an openair deck circulation as mentioned before.

The preparation of the Script drawing kickstarts the reimagination of the site. As the name suggests, the Script acts as a guide and prompt, a drawing to draw into and annotate on site. In making the script, prior research of the site was done as well as identification of the places/things of interest that needed surveying and recording.

By tracing over the old map of The Water of Leith to create the Script drawing, sounds of the river were recorded at different points; whereby the locations of the old mills were marked on the Script. A personalised line notation system was then devised to interpret those recorded sounds.

Besides producing drawings as a recalibration and recording of the site, I also produced three film poems.

The approach of the narrative of the first film ‘The River is Calling Me’ was that the river was calling out to a person, enticing said person to venture out and discover its story.

As the person makes their way to the river, they suddenly find themselves on a journey to an orchestra performance.

Along the passage, the river ‘speaks’ to the person in a variety of ways, unveiling its past.

The notion that the river acts as both the orchestra and stage; a performance that needs to be walked through in order to savour its symphony.

Sound becomes music, an overwhelming performance by nature, interwoven with its historical past.

The next two films were iterations of the first one, building up from the previous one in layers and complexity in the form of visual material, sound and narrative.

The creation of the Plot i, Point of View, Time and Scale drawings followed after the Script drawing.

These drawings helped to gradually mould my idea of redrawing the river through sound and memory, leading to the creation of the final Plot ii drawing.

Final Installation Set Up

The final installation consisted of the film poems being displayed on screens, with the Plot ii drawing being laid on a table together with the pamphlet.

The final film introduces the idea that Waverly portrays The Water of Leith in certain aspects, drawing some parallels between the two ‘rivers’.

Waverly station as the river which flows through the movement of trains, Waverly Bridge spanning across the ‘river’ as Dean Bridge.

And so this urban escapism takes place by delving into memory, mapping the journey taken in The Water of Leith onto Waverly.

The whole set up carries the narrative of losing oneself within a world of sound and memory, and just immersing oneself to the point where one is able to make their own interpretations of the site through the drawings and films produced; evoking memory through sound.

INTRODUCTION

year iv; dissertation THE GENESIS OF SOCIAL AMALGAMATION THROUGH THE WIDESPREAD FABRICATION OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN THE VIRTUAL REALITY WORLD

The aim of this dissertation was to examine how the fabrication of architecture in the virtual reality world may be used as a restorative tool in hopes of achieving social amalgamation within a divided society.

Advancements in virtual reality technology and life in existing virtual worlds identify the possibilities of how society would be like, residing in the virtual reality world in the future.

As society is getting further divided in the real world, transitioning to reside in the virtual reality world where architecture is fully fabricated instead could enable society to leave their differences and come together to be unified in this new virtual world.

Virtual University of Edinburgh in Second Life

We are living in an age of technology where there are constant breakthroughs each passing day. As we advance further into the abyss of technology, we slowly find ourselves somewhat residing in this virtual space.

This dimension subconsciously surrounds, engulfs, and swallows our whole being as we invest more time in it.

In reality, we inhabit our homes. But what if, in this virtual reality, we too, can inhabit ‘homes’? Could it then be possible for society to live entirely in this alternate reality? Would members of society be able to leave their differences and discrimination in the real world to come together as a unified body in this new world?

Since 2007, universities and colleges from all over the world have started to carry out classes online in Second Life. These academic institutions set up their own virtual campuses and buildings for teaching and learning purposes; some of which but not limited to are Oxford University, Harvard Law School and even Edinburgh University.

Steve Taylor, the director of Vassar College’s academic computing services, has recreated the Sistine Chapel on Second Life’s Vassar Island in 2007 and has attracted quite a bit of attention from society when it was first unveiled.

Taylor digitally duplicated the ornate interior of the famed cathedral in the Vatican City, from the Renaissance pilasters to the barrel-vaulted ceiling adorned with Michelangelo’s renowned, breath-taking frescoes. Taylor, who has never visited the actual Renaissance chapel himself, has given society the opportunity to go on a virtual pilgrimage where it would not be possible in real life.

This has undeniably opened up doors of opportunities for students to obtain education, where it was maybe physically impossible or unavailable to them before.

Rendever is one tech company that is working towards exposing seniors to the world of VR. As age catches up, mobility becomes a main issue and for most senior citizens, this means their world shrinks considerably and has become limited. Moreover, this community might not possess the physical health to travel as they once did when they were younger, leading them to missing out on many experiences.

The fabrication of architecture in the virtual reality world itself ensures the practice of transparency, democracy and equality is being upheld. The ability of an individual to be present in the same space in the virtual realm as with others regardless of their location in real reality, allows transparency in any engagement; whether it relates to social, business affairs or even legal procedures.

Besides travelling in the virtual realm, VR is a useful tool in the early diagnosis of diseases like dementia and can potentially be a form of therapy for such diseases.

It is found that the fabrication of architecture in the virtual reality world also enables society to feel that they belong in their new home, instilling values of democracy and equality into their minds as they perceive one another as equals in being responsible for contributing to the harmony and quality of life in the virtual reality world.

As architecture is widely fabricated in the VR world, the seniors are able to meet up and join the younger members of society for social activities, ultimately narrowing and closing the age gap between them.

Thus, there is hope for society to achieve social amalgamation through the fabrication of architecture in the virtual reality world. Although most of society may not be too familiar with virtual reality technology as of today, there is promise that this technology may be used for the construction of the world in the future for the betterment of society.

The tectonics and narratives of the National Museum of Scotland’s ‘Scotland Transformed’ gallery space have been recasted onto the civic stage of Edinburgh.

The design and disposition of the museum artefacts in the gallery strengthen their relationships to one another in their historical context while informing the architectonics of the museum space.

Speculative and spatial drawings of what constitutes a collection and also a context are explored; how specific collections are to be re-arranged and re-presented architectonically in the context of the design studio; and third, the design of contemporary museums that critically reflect the understandings of the two terms: collection and context.

The Ivory Towers and Smoke Stacks as a collection, establishes strong axes which further amplify the proposed hierarchies and the connection of the 3C’s Collection, Container and Context.

The collections are marked in red; acting as focal points to which the container and context are then situated.

However, the collections are not restricted to being mere artefacts, and are able to extend to being the container or even the context, depending on their relative position and purpose.

As the project progressed into second phase, a re-territorialisation rescaling of the existing collection made to comply to the condition boundaries of the new site.

A portion of components from the existing collection was selected to be further developed in the second phase. Reframing and repositioning the selected components gave way to a new design response towards the new site; establishing new hierarchies and axes in the process.

Mrs. Chambers meets Mrs. Playfair for a Drink (s) - pair Phase II

The second phase of the project raises a critical response to museums as institutions of cultural production. This challenges the conventional idea of the museum as a mere spatial display of historical artefacts and instead, proposes the notion of the museum as more of a carapace, a projection of the object that is housed within.

Spaces Within Perspectives

With Dublin Street Lane South as the given mews site, the further development of the project was initiated by superposing the existing installation onto the current context. The abstraction and repositioning of individual elements from the previous installation were carefully carried out while taking into consideration the polarity of scales between the elements and their new context.

Elevating the idea of the museum as a productive space, ‘Mrs. Chambers meets Mrs. Playfair for a Drink(s)’ carries the narrative of a craft brewery as an undisclosed meeting place for the spouses of two prominent figures of Edinburgh, Chambers and Playfair. The brewery boasts a productive space as well as houses a small library to portray the modern social culture of work and play as a balanced lifestyle.

From Above Model Plan

Echoing the design elements from the earlier phase of the project, the craft brewery has taken the abstracted form of Adam House, scaled down to fit comfortably within the mews while establishing its boundaries and presence on site.

Within it lies the former Smoke Stack chimney which now acts as a massive vessel for retaining beer while the Ivory Tower has been reconfigured as the new library, keeping its identity as an academic centre. The position of both elements maintain the horizontal axis as before, acting as a locus for both production and learning. A beam protruding from the beer chamber reaches out to the library, connecting both in the form of a scale, further emphasizing on the idea of balance.

Even after several iterations, the project preserves its initial notion of synthesis between the collection [C1], the container [C2] and the context [C3]. The reconfiguration of forms and scales still manage to result in similar allocations of the C’s, with the two new figures, Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Playfair as additions to the existing collection [C1].

in practice / BYG; architectural-art installation BUTTERWORTH FRINGE FESTIVAL 2017 | THE TEMPLE OF COLOURS

Primarily an art installation revolving around a cubic form; The Temple of Colours is easily identified by people from all walks of life. It speaks contrast to its surroundings in its form and scale, yet portrays lightness in appearance and depth in interpretation.

The cube signifies tangibility through its form and intangibility through its translucency. The dynamic space and random colours within the cube represents the multi-cultural background of Butterworth.

Constructed of steel framings and infilled with bottles, The Temple of Colours primarily seeks to raise awareness and promote the culture of recycling back in Malaysia. The bottles that were used in the production of the installation were recycled bottles, gathered from numerous sources.

covers 179 km on the island. Part of the Master Plan – the 39.3km Coastal Cycling Route – starts from Tanjong Tokong to Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (the Penang Second Bridge) and the Penang International Airport is almost completed.

A spiral bridge at Queensbay will take cyclists to Bayan Baru, Sungai Ara and Bayan Lepas in a few years time.

We hope to further promote cycling and commuting to the public in order for a cleaner,greener,healthier Penang!

PENANG island has one of the most beautiful and interesting roads for cycling. This Penang Cyclist Map will help you to explore Penang’s recommended cycling routes. Go on an adventure and scenic round island ride with a distance of 82km or explore heritage George Town. If you enjoy hilly rides, take the Air Itam route or a leisure coastal one along the dedicated lane from town to the second bridge. Penang is synonymous with delicious food and hopefully this map will be able to ignite your adventurous side in exploring food all around town.

So, ride safe and take time to explore Penang on bicycles.

Inner City Heritage Ride Explore the city using LinkBikes which are available at 25 stations all over Georgetown, which will lead you to good street food, beautiful heritage buildings and meeting the friendly people of Penang. You must also stop at the cafes to chill and enjoy a cup of coffee or cold drinks. Do remember to drop into one of the many souvenir shops in town before leaving.

Safety Do’s • Do wear a helmet that fits well at all times during cycling. Any appropriate additional safety gear should be worn as well.

• Do follow traffic rules and watch out for pedestrians and motorised vehicles on the road. Use the cycling lane whenever possible.

• Do remember to switch on your front and rear lights under low light conditions to increase visibility.

Don’ts • Don’t suddenly brake or swerve without any indication or warning.

• Don’t simply litter, instead, find the nearest rubbish bin to dispose.

• Don’t cycle recklessly.
