WHAT'S COOKING

A Balanced Path to Adulthood Multi-sport athletes set the groundwork for success. JAMES COOK

E

very year I hear about athletes who

will be unable to play due to injury. Over the last 10 to 15 years that false belief that an athlete must focus on one sport in order to be an all-district, all-state player or get that coveted college scholarship is absolutely ridiculous. Study after study has shown multisport athletes are less likely to sustain a major injury than those who are a single sport athlete. Multi-sport athletes are more likely to play at the next level, high school, college or professional. A study of

multi-sport athletes on a personal level, found they are more likely to have healthier behaviors, and later in life. They exercise more often, eat healthier and are less likely to smoke. The study also found multi-sport athletes have higher levels of self-esteem and social support and have lower levels of loneliness and self-derogation. As I am sure you can tell, I am a proponent of multi-sport involvement. It isour job as a parent, a coach and an athletic administrator to create the best environment for our athletes to grow and develop and maintain those positive habits into adulthood. Guide them, love them, care for them, sports will happen. 2

Fall 2019

WINNING LIKE IT’S 1999! T

he year 1999 will always go down in history for not only St. Pius X High School but New Mexico high school

sports. It was the year of state champions, and the mighty Sartans dominated the Fall season. Never before had one high school won four state titles in football, volleyball and both boys and girls soccer. The record still stands to this day.

4

FALL 2019 | Est.1956

The reign began with girls soccer beating Albuquerque Academy 1-0 in the final game and winning their first of eight blue trophies. The Lady Sartans held a 17 – 0 – 5 record that year, coached by David Sullivan Sr. It was the first of seven state titles for Coach Sullivan Sr. Boys soccer was on the path to winning their seventh consecutive and ninth state title under Coach Jorge Tristani. The final game ended in a 1-1 tie and it was said that Coach Tristani gave the trophy to Academy ending the season with a record of 19 – 2 - 1. Later, the NMAA delivered a second state trophy to the school where it lives among the seventeen state titles won by the boys soccer program at SPX. In volleyball, it had been 5 years since the Lady Sartans had won their first state title in 1994 and 2 years since their last in 1997. Coach Holly Olsen Smith ’89 led the Sartans to victory against Moriarty in three games, finishing the season with a record of 22-1. Three down and one to go, the pressure was on for football, and the championship game was going to be played in Artesia. The game was played in frigid temperatures in the aftermath of a blizzard, and Coach San Juan Mendoza led the Sartans to victory with a final score of 22-12, ending with a season record of 12 – 1. It was the second of three state titles for SPX football. Since 1999, St. Pius X High School continues to dominate in athletics, winning 51 first place state trophies since that championship season and a total of 86 since our inception in 1956. As the school enters its sixty-third year, St. Pius X Athletics continues to be a force in high school sports. Our young athletes are blessed to have some of the best coaches in the state that sacrifice daily to teach and set an example of the school motto, “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.”

THE TRAINING ROOM

Hooked on Sports Medicine Juanita Marquez describes what she does as an athletic trainer, and why she does it.

A

fter ten years of working as a High School Athletic Trainer, I am still met with the same questions every year...What exactly is an Athletic Trainer? What do you do? Why did you choose this career field? As we begin the 2019/2020 school year at St. Pius X, I wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of those burning questions. What is an Athletic Trainer (AT) and what do you do? Athletic trainers are often confused with personal trainers. There is, however, a huge difference in terms of education, skillset, and job duties. Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified health care

professionals who provide treatment and care for athletes. As an Athletic Trainer, I provide services such as primary care, injury and illness prevention, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. I can be found at games or practices providing care and treatment before, during or after each sporting event. I am responsible for treating and caring for our 250+ SPX athletes. In order to become an Athletic Trainer, I had to complete a Bachelor’s Degree program from an accredited university. In addition to obtaining this degree I also received my Masters and Doctorate in Education.

Why do you do it? So often I am asked why did I become an Athletic Trainer. For those willing to listen, I explain that I always wanted to be a doctor but as a young college student I did not think I could handle 10 years or more of education. It was my father who then suggested I look into athletic training. As the daughter of a football coach, I was always very comfortable around sports. It was a natural fit to work in a profession where I was surrounded by athletes and sports. After taking my first athletic training class, I was hooked. I realized I had found a profession where I was allowed to practice medicine (to an extent) while watching the sports I love.

Dr. Marquez is entering her tenth year as the Athletic Trainer at St. Pius X High School.
