We are excited to announce that St. Pius X is beginning a new strategic plan. With high school enrollment growing significantly and the successful addition of the eighth grade, our future is bright, and we need to collaborate as a community to map out the future of the school we love so much. Guided by the nationally renowned Leadership Roundtable and facilitated by our respected Assistant Principal Orlando Rodriguez, we have gathered representatives from the alumni, current parents, faculty, and school leadership to start an ambitious reflection on how we can make St. Pius X the school of choice in New Mexico. This process will only work with your support. Expect the school to communicate with you over the summer to participate in a critical survey to seek your input into our plan. We want the school to make the alumni proud, serve the needs of our parents and students, and be in the best position for the future generations of Sartans. The school leadership promises that what we all finalize in the plan will happen. Your support this year with the purchase of the property and the Meitler Study for middle school shows that as a family we can do anything, so we want to plan big and go far. Thank you for your continued support. St. Pius X, pray for us and may the Holy Spirit guide us.

Fr. John Trambley President, SPX

When I was a newly ordained priest in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, I had a spiritual director who helped guide my first steps in ministry. He had a favorite passage that he would share with me regularly. It is from Chapter 15, verse five of The Gospel According to John: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” This speaks about the importance of remaining rooted in Christ and His Church. It also speaks about the necessity to pray always without ceasing. This scripture passage also further explains the process and importance of pruning. It says in verse two, “He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” There has been some restructuring and pruning here at St. Pius X. This does not mean the school was not producing fruit, it simply means that this process will provide more fruit by exposing branches to more sunlight which stimulates growth. Emerging from the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Reorganization, the school will pay its debts and lay a foundation for future growth. You are a part of this. While you may not see an event like our annual gala, you will have an opportunity to grow our school in meaningful ways. This will ensure St. Pius X bears fruit for many years to come.

In 1964 when I graduated from St. Pius X High School, I knew I’d had great school experiences, had learned a lot from good teachers, cherished my friends, and was eager to move on with my life. On that spring day, I did not know that my connection to SPX would be as strong, albeit different, sixty years later. Much has changed since then: the original campus is now the site of a shopping center, Fr. Falbo, Sr. Christopher, and Mrs. Green sing with the angels, and demerit slips and red plaid skirts languish in landfills. Yet, common threads remain strong. SPX will always be our school, filled with memories of lessons learned, friendships shared, and a deep tradition of faith and service that connects Pius alumni around the globe.

My daughters, Amy Fink McCarty ’86, Pam Fink Read ’88, and Becky Fink ’90, are SPX alumnae. My granddaughters, Lilly ’17 and Karina ’19 McCarty are SPX grads, and grandsons, Aidan ’24 and Bryan ’25 Thomas walk St. Pius X halls today.

Beyond the family connection, I’ve enjoyed a strong network of friends and acquaintances developed during my days at SPX and through Board service. Classmates gather for monthly lunches; we established an endowment for tuition assistance, and support each other through good times and sad moments.

I am grateful for the many gifts I received through SPX, and I thank God for the legacy of faith, curiosity, achievement, and resilience that characterize our school.

As a native of Albuquerque, I am very familiar with its history and growth. My knowledge of neighborhoods and properties is broad, putting me in a unique position to advise clients, so when I was asked to serve my alma mater on the SPX Real Estate Corp., I was honored.

I attended Our Lady of Fatima, Heights Catholic grade school, St. Pius X High School, class of 1970, and UNM, where I acquired Bachelor of Arts and MBA Degrees, graduating in 1979. I am the owner and Qualifying Broker for Berger Briggs Real Estate & Property Management, having worked at Berger Briggs for over 48 years.

I have been married to Muffin Kennedy Menicucci for 49 years, and we have four children who attended Annunciation Catholic School and St. Pius X High School. John Jr. ’94 is Senior Legal Counsel for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, NE. John and his wife Betsy have four children. Janea ’96 is the Coordinator for NM Universal Design for Learning, Central Region Educational Cooperative, NM Public Education Department, and has a daughter. Joseph ’98 is a Contract Bond and Commercial Insurance Agent with Downey & Company. Joseph and his wife Nina Franchini ’00 have three children. Jason ’00 is the Director of Production Operations for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Division in Dallas. Jason and his wife Shaina have three children.

Since the early 1980s, my wife and I have been involved in many aspects of Catholic education and Catholic social services. I have served on the Annunciation Catholic School Board, the St. Pius X Foundation Board, the St. Pius X Athletic Booster Club, the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities, and the Finance Committee of Annunciation Church. I possess a strong desire to see Catholic Education succeed in Albuquerque as the means to raise our children to be outstanding young adults and future leaders in the Catholic Church and our community. I see the excellent education, values, and beliefs that my children learned manifesting in their lifelong success.

First St. Pius X Graduate

Joe Abbin Class of 1960

Joseph P. Abbin, began his high school career as one of 114 freshmen in the basement of St. Charles Catholic School in the fall of 1956. This was the original location of St. Pius X Catholic High School, as the Louisiana Campus was under construction. As the years progressed, the student body grew but the number of students in the first graduating class decreased to 80. Joe recalls, “Back then, not a lot was tolerated. We could be a rough bunch and it was easy to be expelled.” Not only did he make it through, but he was Senior Class President, Editor of the Yearbook (Chi-Rho), and most notably, the very first graduate of St. Pius X High School. The first edition of the Chi-Rho was published his senior year and dedicated to Father Daniel Rice who was instrumental in the realization of the need for a Catholic High School in Albuquerque. Upon completion of the Louisiana Campus, the Class of 1960 walked the halls for only one year, but they would leave a legacy that would impact generations for decades.

Upon graduation, Joe earned his Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1964 and 1966, respectively. He has led a multifaceted career spanning engineering, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. For thirty years, from 1964 to 1994, Joe worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, where he contributed to various areas, including nuclear weapons, national security, and energy systems.

While at Sandia, Joe began his second career, serving the community and the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) Reserve Office, working part-time as a patrol officer in various areas and shifts of the city under twelve different chiefs. Joe worked for APD for 36 years and was the last of his kind when the reserves program closed in 2020, during the pandemic. This unique firsthand experience gave him invaluable insights into the challenges and intricacies of law enforcement in Albuquerque. In 2018, Joe authored the highly acclaimed book “ABQ Blues – Crime and Policing in Albuquerque, NM,” which critically examined the criminal justice system in the area, highlighting issues and proposing solutions.

After his retirement from Sandia, Joe opened Motorhead Mart, an automotive bookstore and publishing house that later evolved into Roadrunner Engineering, a company that analyzes, designs, and sells high-performance equipment and books for automotive applications. As a registered professional engineer (now retired) in the state of New Mexico, Joe’s expertise has led to the publication of over 50 articles and the authorship or co-authorship of five books in his field. Additionally, he holds five U.S. patents, showcasing his innovative contributions to the industry.

Joe Abbin has left a lasting impact throughout his accomplished career through his engineering contributions, entrepreneurial ventures, and civic engagement. His knowledge, expertise, and dedication continue to make a difference in the fields of automotive engineering and public safety in Albuquerque. On the brink of his third retirement, Joe is focusing on his research, writing, and lecturing on automotive topics and addressing the alarming crime problem in Albuquerque. His dedication to exploring solutions and raising awareness of this issue showcases his commitment to improving the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens. As Joe continues to live a life of public service and safety, he reflects on his heroine, his mother, whose dedication and determination ensured he and his brother, Thomas ’63 received a good Catholic education. Joe’s parting words to the Class of 2023, “You can only do this once, it isn’t a dress rehearsal; hard work and education pay off. Be curious and be skeptical, and remember, time spent doing something is never wasted.”

Fine Arts

Setting the Stage

The SPX Department of Fine Arts fosters creativity on the stage, in the studio, and in the classroom. Performing arts shine throughout stage productions, concerts, and the highly anticipated fall and spring plays. The students and teachers of Fine Arts never disappoint. This year, the Sartan Nation was entertained by the band, choir, and drumline at the Fall, Christmas, and Spring Concerts in addition to the band and drumline making several appearances in support of their fellow Sartans on the field. The Fine Arts Department’s biggest crossover events of the year took place with the productions of the fall and spring plays. The fall production of Career Angel, was produced by Ms. Clarissa Clark, directed by Mr. Stephen Armijo, and supported by Fine Arts Department Chair, Mr. Keith Jordan, who said,“This production was able to take place because the kids made it happen. Volunteers outside the drama department showed up daily and worked on set and behind the scenes. Two standout performances were Bethany Padilla who played the lead role and our Stage Manager, Olivia Boatman.” Career Angel is a comedic adaptation set during World War II of how a group of sisters save their school from financial ruin with the help of an angel. The spring production of Puffs became the biggest production SPX has seen in almost a decade. Director Stephen Armijo said,

National Finals

In February 2023, the Saint Pius X Academic Decathlon Team (AcaDec) competed and won its 22nd State Championship, earning the right to represent New Mexico at the National Finals in Frisco, Texas. Taking third overall in Division III, AcaDec competed in ten events: History, Science, Art, Music, Literature, Mathematics, Economics, Essay, Speech, and Interview. The theme for this year was the American Revolution. The 2023 team, composed of five seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore, delivered a remarkable first for our school: three consecutive years of achieving a top-three national placement in AcaDec!

Congratulations and Farewell!

Over Three Decades of Service Culminate in Retirement

It is with great pleasure and heartfelt appreciation St. Pius X High School announces the retirement of Andres Maldonado, a valued member of our maintenance and facilities team. After an incredible tenure of 35+ years, Andres will bid farewell to SPX and is embarking on a well-deserved journey into retirement.

Throughout his remarkable career, Andres has been integral in maintaining the infrastructure and creating a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors at SPX. His unwavering dedication, tireless work ethic, and attention to detail have left an indelible mark on our Pius family. His commitment to excellence and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty significantly impacted the daily operations of SPX. Initially hired by an outsourced cleaning company 38 years ago for the Louisiana Campus, he would eventually become a full-time employee three years later. During his tenure, Andres approached every task with professionalism and a greeting, “Hello, my friend!” to anyone who crossed his path.

In commemoration of Andres’ retirement, Fr. Stephen Huber ’04 celebrated a Mass in his honor, leading a blessing where Andres was surrounded by the senior class, bidding him farewell and recognizing his outstanding service.

Feeding the Bodies, Minds, and Souls of Our Community

On April 5th, Campus Ministry and MADAH (Making a Difference Against Hunger) hosted their largest event of the year, Packing Day. This Catholic Schoolwide event united students from Annunciation, Holy Ghost, San Felipe, and St. Charles with St. Pius X students, alumni, parents, and other volunteers who packed 154,500 meals that will feed thousands of people in New Mexico, and Ukraine. In the last 15 years, MADAH has packed 2.5 million meals, 80% of which have stayed in NM. The meals go to families supported by Catholic Charities, St. Felix Pantry, and local St. Vincent de Paul Society Chapters. Packing Day is sponsored by a grant from the Catholic Foundation and various other fundraisers throughout the year.

In mid-April, the Campus Ministry Team, led by Fr. Trambley, Ms. Eiler, and Mrs. Olguin organized the final, and most largely attended Senior Retreat held at Glorieta Adventure Camp. The group of 37 seniors spent two spiritually formative days strengthening their friendships, creating lifetime bonds with their classmates, and ultimately deepening their relationship with God.

Athletes of the Year

The recipients excel equally in both academics and athletics. The requirement for this award includes being an honor student (3.75 GPA and above) and a varsity multi-sport athlete or year-round varsity athlete of exceptional leadership and performance.

The SPX Native American Leadership Award is given to Native American students who meet the following criteria: he or she must be a senior in good standing, must be an active participant in the SPX Native American Club, and must demonstrate leadership in both school and community.

Primo Contreras Award

The Primo Contreras Award is given to students who have demonstrated joy in serving others on campus as well as outside our school community, a love of St. Pius X High School, and exemplary character. This year the Theology Department has selected Bethany Padilla, who they feel represents these qualities.

The award is given to the student who most represents what the Sports Medicine Program is all about and is selected by the Athletic Trainer.

West Point Leadership Award

Each year, during Junior year, students are nominated and five are selected to attend the West Point Leadership Luncheon. At the luncheon, the students are interviewed by West Point Alumni who then select one student as the West Point Leadership Winner.

National Merit Commended Scholar

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million high school students enter the program each year. National Merit Commended Scholars are selected by The College Board. Students must score in the top 3% out of the country’s brightest seniors on the PSAT.

It is a tradition at St. Pius X for seniors to choose a young man and a young woman to represent the “best of their class.” They are asked to consider the following qualities in nominating a peer from their class who represents the all-around ideal St. Pius X student: intellectual integrity, respect and caring for his or her peers, sensitivity, congeniality, and leadership. The seniors are asked to vote for the two students whom they most respect and admire as good people and as good Christians.

In choosing a recipient for the Social Studies Department’s Excellence in Social Studies Award, the department looks for students who have excelled in the social studies program and exhibited a passion for history and government.

The Head of School’s Recognition Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in the school community and campus ministry activities, and has grown as a person academically, spiritually, and in their love for St. Pius X High School. Character development is the quality sought as well as integrity and leadership in his or her own way.

The Outstanding Graduate is selected by the faculty. Using the motto of St. Pius X, “Teach me goodness, discipline and knowledge,” the faculty looks for a student whose life truly embodies these traits. Faculty select the recipient of this award through a voting process. Teachers agonize over their vote and find it difficult to select just one outstanding graduate.

Cheer Recap

The Sartan Cheer Team had an exceptional 2022-2023 season, filled with achievements and growth. The season kicked off at The Varsity Spirit summer camp, where several Sartans were recognized as All-Americans for their outstanding performance and enthusiasm. Senior Krystal Lucero and sophomores Eva Chaidez and Isabella Pacheco were chosen to represent SPX in the prestigious Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Throughout the season, the team participated in various local competitions, showcasing their skills and spirit. They secured a remarkable 1st place win at the Rio Rancho Spirit Rally, demonstrating their talent and dedication. The success continued with a 1st place win for Cheer with Music and a 3rd place win for Game Day at The Spirit of Hope competition.

Cheer also successfully qualified for Regionals, highlighting their excellence and earning them a spot in the highly anticipated National competition held in Anaheim, CA. At Nationals, the team showcased their versatility by performing two routines: Game Day and Cheer with Music. Their hard work paid off as they achieved remarkable results, doing extremely well in both categories. The season concluded at the NMAA State Competition, where the Sartans represented SPX with a competitive showing.

Overall, the Sartan Cheer Team had an incredible season, marked by team victories and personal growth. Their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport were evident in every competition in which they participated.

Dorados Recap

The Dorados had a remarkable season filled with performances, competitions, and achievements that showcased their talent, versatility, and dedication in various events, bringing year-long and international recognition to SPX. In the pre-season, Dorado seniors Briza Flores and Erica White, and Meredith Smith, junior, were named All-Americans by Varsity Spirit Dance and Cheer Competitions.

The “Golden Ones” started their season with performances at all varsity football games, adding energy and entertainment. They also had the opportunity to perform at some varsity boys and girls basketball games, showcasing their talent during halftime and cheering our Sartans on to victory. Keeping with tradition, the Dorados organized the highly anticipated Winter Showcase, featuring solo performances, exclusive Dorados’ timeout dances, and competition pieces. This Christmas event allowed them to showcase their hard work and skills. During the Christmas break, White and Smith represented SPX internationally as they traveled to participate in The London New Year’s Day Parade as All-Americans.

In the spring, the Dorados hosted a Junior Dorados dance clinic where younger aspiring dancers could learn from them and improve their skills. In addition to the showcases and clinics, the Dorados had an extremely competitive season, winning 3rd for their Pom routine at the APS Spirit Invitational Competition. They received two 1st place finishes in Pom and Hip Hop in their division at the Rocket Spirit Blast competition at Goddard High School. The Dorados then competed at the APS Metro Competition held at Atrisco Heritage Academy and won 3rd place overall. Their performance impressed the judges and highlighted their showmanship and teamwork. The Dorados finished their season competing at the NMAA Spirit State Competition held at The Pit. In the 4A division, they secured 4th place overall, representing SPX with the pride and talent for which the Dorados are known.

The St. Pius X Baseball Team completed their season with an impressive overall record of 22-5. The Sartans achieved a second-place finish in the SPX-hosted Andres Arguello Tournament and a respectable fifth-place finish in the APS Metro Tournament. They secured a commendable 5-3 record in the district, finishing in second place behind Grants. This placement set them up for a challenging schedule in the state tournament. The Sartans faced tough competition throughout the state tournament, going up against two of the state’s top pitchers in the quarterfinal and semifinal games. The Sartans’ determination and talent excelled as they reached the finals for the third consecutive year, facing Albuquerque Academy once again. Displaying their dominance, they emerged as State Champions, triumphing over AA with a final score of 7-2. This victory marked their third championship in the past four years and carries even greater importance due to the absence of a championship game in 2020.

The 2023 season was extraordinary for the St. Pius X Softball Team as they displayed their unwavering competitiveness. Heading into the state tournament with an impressive 19-8 overall record and undefeated in the district, they once again secured the district title. Their outstanding performance earned them the coveted 4-seed in the state tournament, marking their highest seeding in a decade.

Regrettably, the Lady Sartans’ journey in the state tournament came to a heartbreaking halt during the semifinals, suffering defeat to the Lovington Wildcats. Nonetheless, the team showcased their remarkable abilities across the field, with various athletes stepping up during crucial moments to contribute to the team’s success. The Lady Sartans effectively established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the state and seasons to come.

Boys Season Record: 7-5

Boys State Seed: 9TH Girls Season Record: 4-8

Boys tennis had a spectacular season, finishing the regular season with a 7-5 record and an impressive 5-1 in the district, winning second. Senior Gavin Richards (9-2, losing only to 5A schools) was instrumental in leading the team to success, playing a vital role in their victories and securing the District 1/5 4A Individuals Singles Champion title. Senior Carlos Saucedo was a competitive 4th in the district for singles.

Girls tennis completed their regular season with four wins and eight losses and a district record of 4-2, earning third place in district. Despite a challenging schedule, the relatively new team only had three returners and finished strong. As a young team of Lady Sartans, they have high prospects for the upcoming years.

St. Pius X Golf had an exceptional season, qualifying the boys and girls teams and four individuals for the State Tournament. A total of 14 Sartans qualified, the most of any team, in any class. This significant achievement for St. Pius X Golf highlights the strength and depth of the program. The Sartan Boys performed exceptionally well in several significant tournaments, including the East Mountain Invite, where they placed first. They also emerged as champions in the Shootout in the Desert Tournament, which featured the top ten 5A, 4A, and 3A teams in New Mexico. Sophomore Jax Mulville took first in the individual competition. In the Academy Invitational and SPX Invitational the Sartans emerged as champions. Although they finished third in the 4A State Preview and the Metro Tournaments, the team was able to claim first place in District, with five out of six players being named All-District. The boys had an excellent showing in the State Tournament and finished in second place as State Runners-Up. The Lady Sartans excelled in several significant tournaments, including first-place finishes in the East Mountain Invite and the SPX Invite, and a second-place finish in the Academy Invite. Leading up to the State Preview and Dristrict Tournament, Amara Montoya was crowned the individual champion. The Disctrict Tournament was a big success for the team, with four out of six players named All-District players. In the State Championship, the girls were competitive and emerged as State Runners-Up. It was an impressive season for the girls, with notable performances throughout.

Despite a season filled with injuries and a demanding schedule, the St. Pius X Rugby Team demonstrated resilience and determination throughout their journey. Concluding the regular season with a 6-8 record, the Sartans experienced an upset in the semi-final match of the State Tournament. SPX was defeated by Rio Rancho, followed by another loss in the 3rd place match against Los Alamos, despite wins against both teams earlier in the season.

Additionally, this season marked the exciting formation of an U16 team of talented eighth and ninth graders in the club. Building upon this success, the club plans to establish a U19 team next year, comprised of senior, junior, and sophomore players. The club will also form a ladies team, adding to the growing diversity and inclusivity of the SPX Rugby Program.

The 2023 Sartan Water Polo season was another strong one for St. Pius X and the Albuquerque Prep Schools. Both the boys and girls St. Preps teams advanced to post-season play and achieved great success in the State Tournament.

The St. Preps Boys had a remarkable season, finishing it with a commanding victory in the 3rd place game. This was an impressive feat considering they were the only team to have a single win over the eventual state champions. The boys are a young team with no seniors and look poised for dominant play over the next few years.

The St. Prep Girls achieved an incredible feat by finishing in the top two spots in the state for seven consecutive years. Lone senior, Presley Olguin, was a strong leader and role model for the team throughout her time here. Her dedication to excellence was instrumental in helping the team reach great heights.

The girls are aiming to retake the state championship next year, and like the boys, have some strong players to look forward to adding to an already impressive roster. Sartan Water Polo has an extremely bright future!

Team members won seventeen medals and earned three scholarships. It was also the first time that SPX had three quadruple medal winners in individual events; Adam Goodyear, Colette CorreaBruzzese, and Chidike Anozie took home a combination of four gold, silver, and bronze medals. Mr. James Penn has been coaching SPX Academic Decathlon Teams for 31 years, starting the program in the fall of 1991 and winning its first State Championship in 1998. Since then, SPX has collected twenty-two State Championships and often placed among the top six in Division II or III at the National Finals, including five top three team trophies and banners. The purpose of the competition is to help form well-rounded leaders for the future: “It has been a joy to participate in this venture and witness the intellectual, social, and character growth of the students who participate in this program. On April 26th, the St. Pius X Athletic Department hosted its annual Signing Day, a day of celebration and recognition for the nine graduating Sartans who signed with colleges to further their athletic careers. It was a momentous occasion that signified the culmination of hard work, dedication, and passion for sports, marking the close of one chapter, and the beginning of an exciting new journey. As the academic year draws to a close, it presents a perfect opportunity for reflection and evaluation of the athletic seasons. It is a time to acknowledge our victories and learn from our mistakes. Regardless of the outcomes achieved by our teams, one constant remains: the dedication displayed by our student-athletes and coaches. I am rarely disappointed by their efforts. Over the course of this school year, we have undergone several changes in our coaching staff. New coaches have taken charge of football, girls soccer, and the Dorados dance team. Change is always challenging, yet it is through change that we hope to grow and become stronger.

In addition to the changes in coaching, we must also say goodbye to some exceptional student-athletes who will be graduating. To these senior student-athletes, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the countless hours, effort, and hard work you have invested in our teams and SPX. Your contributions have laid a solid foundation for future athletes to build upon. To those underclassmen athletes that will be returning, the time has come for you to embrace the opportunity to effect the changes, become leaders, and set an example. You now have the chance to shape your teams and work towards achieving both collective and personal goals.

Orlando Rodriguez Assistant Principal, SPX

After 45 years in education as a teacher and administrator, my journey is taking a different path. My passion in my professional career has been to use as many tools as possible to help students discover, develop, and share their gained knowledge in preparation for their future. My career in education has afforded me the opportunity for continuous improvement and knowledge in education in this ever-changing society.

I began my teaching career as a teacher of instrumental music in Roswell, Alamogordo, and Hobbs, NM. As a band director, my marching and concert bands received numerous awards and honors, and were recognized in the state of New Mexico and throughout the country. After 14 years of teaching, I was encouraged to pursue school administration and have served as both assistant principal and principal in Hobbs, Bernalillo, and finally St. Pius X High School. I also helped in the position of Middle/ Junior High School principal in Hobbs and Albuquerque with 31 years of school administration.

I have always considered myself as a catalyst for continuous school improvement to ensure that all students received the best curriculum and methodologies delivered by the best teachers. Having dedicated the last 15 years to St. Pius X High School, it will always hold a special place in my heart. I know that SPX will continue to flourish and serve God and the SPX community through faith, love, and respect.

As I reflect on my career, I have my former students and all of my colleagues to thank for being a part of a wonderful and cherished adventure that brought me much knowledge and experience.

It has been an exciting year for St. Pius X in terms of spreading the good news about our community and producing gains in enrollment numbers. This time last year, there was uncertainty with the archdiocese’s bankruptcy and fear our campus was potentially lost. Utilizing our traditional marketing efforts, including hosting the ASF 5k, visits to our Catholic feeder schools, and our strong shadow program where a potential Sartan spends a day on campus, we continued to share the Pius Advantage. This year, a marketing focus on an improved website and a vital social media presence has proven invaluable in recruiting new students. However, the most valuable factor has been the addition of an eighth-grade class, weeks after the results of the Meitler Study showed a need to better serve Albuquerque by expanding to middle school.

At press time, the first-ever eighth-grade class is approaching 100, and the incoming freshman class is already 45 students larger than last year! Like our tagline proclaims, A Legendary Past - An Exciting Future!

Tony Pino ’75 President, SPX Foundation

I am very honored to have accepted the role of President of the St. Pius X Foundation in January. My wife Julie and I are 1975 and 1974 graduates and twelve of Julie’s and my siblings also attended SPX. Our son Lyle ’00, his wife Kimberly (Maxwell) ’00, and our son Curtis ’02 had great experiences at St. Pius X. All three excelled academically and athletically. Lyle coached SPX freshman basketball while attending UNM. We have six grandchildren attending Annunciation School, with the first three attending St. Pius X, Fall of 2024.

One of my most significant connections to SPX includes assistant coaching in multiple sports for five years beginning in 1976. My most honored and proud accomplishment was being an assistant coach for the 1978 State Champion baseball team. As Coach Lincoln Galassini said, “I bleed black and gold.”

We have many exceptional Foundation Board members on our team; Chris Skipp ’86, Vice-President; Shannon Kawanee, Secretary; Roberto Espat, John M. Garcia, Paul Gessing, Wayne Glass, Ph.D. ’63, Matthew Wildau ’79, and Emeritus Board members Lonny Hurley ’77 and Joe Menicucci ’98. We have received several new applications from individuals interested in joining the Board, and we hope to make additions very soon.

The role of the St. Pius X Foundation goes beyond raising money for financial assistance and stewardship. As champions and advocates, we wholeheartedly promote all the incredible offerings that SPX brings to our entire community. Featuring a wonderful trio of leads; Chidike Anozie, Liam Chavez, and Bethany Padilla, and a few acting debuts; Andres Ismond & Antonella Abriola, the show was a massive success. The size and energy of the show has sparked a renaissance in our theatre program. We had several students leave the show excited to try and audition for upcoming productions.” The future of theatre at SPX has never looked more magical and bright! But perhaps the most magic happened on three occasions this year on Stage 2 when teachers and students came together to showcase their talents at Coffee House, organized by Ms. Clarissa Clark. Performances included poetry readings and musical acts. This year, for the first time, an ASL presentation was exhibited and enjoyed by the audience.

Congratulations and Farewell! • Over Three Decades of Service Culminate in Retirement

Andres’ retirement plans include moving back to his hometown in Durango, Mexico, and building his retirement home. On behalf of the SPX family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and warmest wishes to Andres as he embarks on this new chapter in life. May his retirement be filled with happiness, good health, and new adventures, “Every day was a blessing to work at St. Pius. Campus Ministry • Feeding the Bodies, Minds and Souls of Our Community

On April 20th, Campus Ministry completed the year with Senior Service Day. This day of volunteerism is an opportunity for our graduating class to give back to our community and unify through service one last time as a class. The seniors provided many helping hands doing yardwork, sorting donation items, and overall helping to beautify our feeder schools and partner organizations. Thank you to Annunciation Parish and Catholic School, Catholic Charities, Holy Ghost Catholic School, Santa Maria de La Vid Norbertine Abbey, and Village of Los Ranchos Agri-Nature Center for your partnerships.

Sartan Open

After a four-year hiatus, the SPX Athletic Booster Club hosted the return of the Sartan Open at Albuquerque Topgolf and raised nearly $17,000, benefiting Sartan Athletics. The tournament began with a prayer led by Deacon Tim Parker as golfers teed off on the signature Top Golf holes for a traditional Sartan-style tournament, complete with the return of Hit by an SPX Golfer and the Marshmallow Chip. The Sartans were in full swing as awards were given to Luke McConnell ’15 as the “Topgolfer;” San Bar Construction Corp., 1st Place; Quality by DiLorenzo, 2nd Place; and Neels Wheels came in last place due to technical difficulties.
