Fine Arts
Setting the Stage
The SPX Department of Fine Arts fosters creativity on the stage, in the studio, and in the classroom. Performing arts shine throughout stage productions, concerts, and the highly anticipated fall and spring plays. The students and teachers of Fine Arts never disappoint. This year, the Sartan Nation was entertained by the band, choir, and drumline at the Fall, Christmas, and Spring Concerts in addition to the band and drumline making several appearances in support of their fellow Sartans on the field. The Fine Arts Department’s biggest crossover events of the year took place with the productions of the fall and spring plays. The fall production of Career Angel, was produced by Ms. Clarissa Clark, directed by Mr. Stephen Armijo, and supported by Fine Arts Department Chair, Mr. Keith Jordan, who said,“This production was able to take place because the kids made it happen. Volunteers outside the drama department showed up daily and worked on set and behind the scenes. Two standout performances were Bethany Padilla who played the lead role and our Stage Manager, Olivia Boatman.” Career Angel is a comedic adaptation set during World War II of how a group of sisters save their school from financial ruin with the help of an angel. The spring production of Puffs became the biggest production SPX has seen in almost a decade. Director Stephen Armijo said,

Academics
National Finals
In February 2023, the Saint Pius X Academic Decathlon Team (AcaDec) competed and won its 22nd State Championship, earning the right to represent New Mexico at the National Finals in Frisco, Texas. Taking third overall in Division III, AcaDec competed in ten events: History, Science, Art, Music, Literature, Mathematics, Economics, Essay, Speech, and Interview. The theme for this year was the American Revolution. The 2023 team, composed of five seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore, delivered a remarkable first for our school: three consecutive years of achieving a top-three national placement in AcaDec!
