EDITORIAL MESSAGE My journey of Toastmasters started with my first speech last year .With the support of my mentors TM Sushmita and TM Vadanda, I sucessfully completed my CC. TKS Toastmasters Club is a place to explore our Public Speaking Skills and Leadership Skills with support of members.

To explore my leadership skills, I joined the TKS Toastmasters Club EXCOM .

Being a VPPR of TKS Toastmasters Club, it is my responsibility to realease the News Letters that would be useful to members as well as non-members.

With immense pride, I release the Volume -1, Newslettter of TKS Toastmasters of October 2018.

As the first order of business, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our DIVISION C DIRECTOR TM Husni Ameen ACS, ALS and our AREA 2 DIRECTOR TM V.M.N.R Sharma for the countless support rendered towards our club.

Thanks to my team who helped me in completing the newsletter that includes TM Vandana and TM Indira Priyanka . I thank all the past and present eminent toastmasters who offered their timely support in completing the work on time.

HISTORY The Toastmasters Journey Toastmasters began as a series of speaking clubs organized by Ralph C. Smedley during his time working for the

education at the YMCA, Smedley saw a need for the men in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them.

Smedley decided to organize a club where they could learn these skills in a social environment, and the men responded well to the concept. He named the group the Toastmasters Club; "toastmaster" was a popular term that referred to a person who gave toasts at banquets and other occasions.

The first unofficial Toastmasters meeting was held on March 24, 1905. Much like Toastmasters meetings today, the participants took turns leading and speaking at each meeting. Smedley and the older, more experienced men evaluated short speeches, while the younger men were invited to join in the evaluations. However, as Smedley was offered positions at other YMCAs in Illinois and later, in San Jose, California, the fledgling clubs lacked leadership and did not flourish.

The Forming of Toastmasters International Smedley began working at the newly organized YMCA in Santa Ana, California, in 1922, and for the first two years, his time was spent building a home for the organization.

However, his passion to help others learn to speak and lead remained. Once the new YMCA building was christened in April of

1924, he was able to introduce the idea of Toastmasters to his colleagues, and organize the Toastmasters club that eventually became Club No. 1 of Toastmasters International.

The first meeting was held at the YMCA building on October 22, 1924. Word spread about Smedley's Toastmasters clubs and soon people in surrounding communities and other states were asking how they could start their own club.

To save time replying to the many letters and inquiries he was receiving, Smedley wrote the "Manual of Instructions" and "Ten Lessons in Public Speaking," which he had printed and bound in paper covers. On October 25, 1928, he secured copyrights on the publications and trademarked the name "Toastmasters Club."

By 1930, nearly 30 Toastmasters clubs had formed including a club in British Columbia, Canada. To reflect expansion outside of the United States, the newly formed association was re-named Toastmasters International. Two years later, in 1932, Toastmasters International was incorporated as a California non-profit organization and Smedley took on the positions of Secretary and Editor of the new association.

He resigned as YMCA Secretary in 1941 to devote more time to Toastmasters. Through the war years, he operated the organization out of a small office. When the war ended, a new Secretary, Ted Blanding, replaced Smedley and remained active as Educational Director for the rest of his life, as well as a permanent member of the Board of Directors.

Origin of The Telugu Kala Samithi , Bahrain TKS, Bahrain was founded with the motto of establishing a platform to encourage Telugu culture and arts. As a founder member of the Samithi, I feel proud to put on record that the performance of the Samithi has been exemplary with its zeal and commitment to the social work for the Indian community at large and Telugu people in particular. I pray that the Samithi continues its good work in the years to come.

SPEECH CONTESTS

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and International speech contests. Competition begins with club contests and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The International competition has two additional levels- semifinal and the World Championship of Public Speaking.

DIVISION –C DIRECTOR MESSAGE Leadership is not a luxury but a necessity As I progressed through my carrier ladder, the demand for better communication and leadership skills were increasing too. Attending regular briefings became a part of my job, but sometimes my briefings did not reach the other parties as it should have. Sometimes, briefings became battle grounds. That is when I realized, professional communication and servant leadership is not a luxury but absolute necessity.

Thanks to one of my colleagues, I had the privilege of joining one of the well-established and well recognized Toastmasters Club in Bahrain in March 2008. Until I took that simple but very important first step, I always thought that improving my communication and leadership skills, a tedious task. But after joining the Toastmasters I realized, taking that first step is much harder than learning the art of communication and leadership skills. So, it is very important that we help our guests to take that first step to join a Toastmasters club.

After I join the club, I realized that there are no shortcuts to improve my communication and leadership skills. I had to follow the well-established, practically proven Toastmasters learning experience with my sincere dedication and efforts. Now here is where the important fact came in to play. The Toastmaster learning experience is not a rigid, radical regime, rather it is a friendly fraternity where you can afford to make mistakes but still continue to enjoy the learning. As our founding father, Dr. Ralph C Smedley has stated “We learn the best in the moments of enjoyment”.

One important thing in Toastmastering is that, “Toastmasters” is not an auto button where everything happens miraculously. We need to put our fair share of commitment, efforts and perseverance to succeed. Having served in many leadership roles in Toastmasters, I really see a different me in myself.

Our vision for Division C in this term is to become a President Distinguished Division where all clubs and Areas in the Division achieve President Distinguished status. This is a realistic vision based on our District vision and mission. This vision can be achieved only though the dedication and efforts of each and every member of the clubs. Remember, in Toastmasters, the individual member is at the top of the hierarchy.

All successes in your club, Area, Division and the District are the results of your efforts, enthusiasm and encouragement. This will in turn improve your necessity of leadership skills.

AREA 2 DIRECTOR MESSAGE Dear leaders!

First of all I would like to express my sincere gratitude for giving me an opportunity to serve as Area 2 Director for the Term 2018-19. I am so fortunate to start my Toastmasters journey as chartered member of TKS Toastmasters Club. Toastmasters has become my passion as it provides opportunity to get transformed into great leaders that world need to make it better place to live in. Our TKS TM club generated many such leaders so far.

As per the theme of the year “Keep Your Dream Alive “, let us all work together as one team work to fulfill our mother club’s dream to form Telugu Toastmasters Club in this year giving opportunities to our Telugu community members to become great leaders that world needs.

Being Area 2 Director, I am always available at the service of TKS Toastmasters club as well as other clubs in our Area 2 for their development. I strongly believe that Leadership is not a position or title. It is action and example. Hence I will do my best to lead by example.

It is one of such dreams of Dr. Ralph C Smedley that led to a wonderful organization called Toastmasters, making a difference in lives of many people across the world, and it is one such dream that our founders, mentors and sponsors have seen, as one of the most vivacious toastmaster club on the island TKS Toastmaster Club.

It is a great pride and honor to be the President of TKS Toastmaster Club - spreading Toastmasters mission for the last nine years with enormous strength and wisdom. Vibrancy of our club is because our members are from diversified background including IT professionals, Engineers of various streams, Finance experts, Teachers and Homemakers.

Our recipe for success has allowed us to achieve President’s Distinguished Club status for the nine years, since its inception. If anything, the recipe is only getting better with age.

We are also proud of our Sparklers Club spearheaded by one the most dedicated Toastmasters TM. Sushmitha and supported by TM Vandana, nurturing the Gaveliers and preparing them to be the torchbearers of TKS Toastmasters. Their immense skills in communication and leadership were remarkably displayed at the recently concluded Gavels Annual Toastmasters Conference GMAC 2018.

With great power comes great responsibility, so our responsibility as the Excom for 2018 is 

Strengthening our membership by ensuring an atmosphere caring of growth and creativity,  Improving the quality of the club’s experience by successfully incorporating digital technologies and  Encouraging the participation of the membership in a fun filled and learning environment of the club.

Having the most energetic and enthusiastic EXCOM team on one side and talented and committed toastmasters on the other side, I believe our dream to take TKS Toastmasters to greater heights is certainly possible.

6 A MINDFUL DIFFERENCE!

Toastmasters International is a well organized programme to teach you how to accomplish the tasks in your life confidently, effectively and effortlessly. It can be at your work place or home.

Meeting Environment : Well planned, structured and positive environment where the people learn from each other.

Prepared Speeches : Here the focus will be on the development of skills present within you at the beginning and also to develop the required skills one at a time. You can go at your own pace. No rush. No race.

Evaluation: No one likes to be judged. The people who often judge cannot maintain a peaceful life. Toastmasters teach you how to evaluate a person without hurting the feelings. Evaluation technique is an immensely useful skill to have a peaceful, yet quality life.

Table-Topics: Life is all about answering questions on the toes. Table topics session helps you to cultivate the brain to think in an analytical way.

Socialization will be developed.

All you need is to dedicate 4 hours per month for your personality development by attending the Toastmasters meeting. Your worthy 4 hours per month! It’s in your hands.

*** SECRETARY My Journey as a Toastmaster has been wonderful so far. Before joining toastmasters, also I used to talk but after joining toastmasters I learnt how to speak and what to speak. In toastmasters I improved my speaking, listening and writing Skills.

I felt very lucky when I was offered Secretary Role; I immediately accepted the role, as I already know from other toastmasters that we can learn a lot by being part of the Executive Committee. Being secretary for the club, in the last few months itself, I have improved a lot in many aspects. My listening skills, organizing skills, presentation skills, have been improved a lot as I need to listen carefully and note down all important points during the meeting, organize it properly to present it the next meeting.

TREASURER Dear All, It is my pleasure to share a few words in regards to Toastmaster Internationals and TKS Toastmaster Club. Prior to joining the

toastmasters, I always had a small stage fear back in my mind even though I am a regular and active participant in any group events. Toastmasters helped me in overcoming that.

Toastmaster empowered in developing my communication and leadership skills. It also provides me a supportive and positive learning experience resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth of mine.

Communication and presentation skills are not optional. You MUST have excellent prowess in this area to excel in your professional and personal life. Building confidence is most important thing to be a passionate communicator. This confidence will not come automatically.

Confidence speaking requires strong command over language proficiency, know the smart presentation techniques, vocal variety, secrets of body languages and clear understanding of the content you are going to present. Toastmaster is the best platform to exhibit those skills and enhance your ability in public speaking, so join TKS toastmasters club and be a confident speaker. So, what you’re your waiting for?? Let’s join, learn, share & grow!! I am sure you all will enjoy the journey of toastmaster.

Even though my journey with Toastmasters is very short for 10 months, it helped me to improve my communication and leadership skills. I had come across many excellent and able speakers who stood as inspiration and has been motivating me to do more.

I even started expressing my experiences and achieved improvements to my other colleagues and friends who are part of my day to day life. It was rightly said by our founder Mr. Ralph C Smedley

LEADERS MESSAGES Leaders – What Do they Do With their Problems?

“Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” William Shakespeare said it best in “King Henry IV, Part II” Leaders of organizations and teams carry a burden that is only understood by those who have also carried the burden.

Decisions are often made that affect others’ lives and wellbeing. Accountability for many decisions and actions down the chain is the leaders to bear. And criticism often comes in plentiful doses. Where do they hang them?

Once there was a young father who had less than a productive day. His old car broken down and he had to walk to work. His tools didn’t support him throughout the day. And to make his troubles worse he twisted his ankle towards the end of the day and could barely walk. He took the help of his colleague to reach home. The young father invited his colleague to meet his family. As they approached the main door of the humble home he saw the father pause on the porch and touch a large coat hook with both of his hands.

When opening the door, the young father completely changed. After having been beaten down all day with problems, a big broad smile came across his face as he hugged his three small happy children and kissed his wife.

Afterwards as they were walking out the door they passed the large coat hook and his colleague asked him about what he had seen him do earlier. He replied, “That’s my problem hook. I know I am going to have problems, but one thing I never want to do is bring them home to my wife and children. So I simply hang my problems on the hook before I enter my house.

When I leave in the morning I pick them up again.” The young father continued, “The odd thing about it is when I pick them up in the morning, they don’t seem to be as big and heavy as they were when I dropped them off the night before.”

Do you have a problem hook? A place where you can hang your troubles when needed? Each of us need a sanctuary where we can escape the rigors and stresses of the day. Leaders find their sanctuary to upload & download when needed. The crown may be heavy but true Leader knows how to alleviate it.

Indian Words in the English of Old Blighty

“... The stars were coming out above him, in great processions of wheeling fire. He saw a great juggernaut of stars form in the sky and threaten to roll over and crush him…”

These words, in Ray Bradbury’s classic ‘Fahrenheit 451’ that I am reading, made me think of how Indian words have been giving a special impetus to English language.

‘Juggernaut’ and ‘wheels’ are often used together to define an overwhelming force of circumstances from which one simply cannot escape.

With its origins in Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri, in India’s east coast state of Odisha, and in its thousand-year-old annual Hindu chariot-festival, the term ‘juggernaut wheels’ has achieved immense literary significance.

It is an allegorical reference to gigantic temple chariots, reputed to crush devotees under large powerful wheels. Once the ratha-yathra (chariotjourney) starts, there is no stopping it. Even if crowds of devotees thronged its path, and came in its way.

The exaggerated accounts of deaths of devotees under Jagannath’s wheels, and the apocryphal stories of pilgrims in devotional

ecstasy throwing themselves into its path, to achieve moksha (salvation), gave rise to the term ‘juggernaut wheels’.

In this 1953 dystopian novel of Ray Bradbury, I could feel the protagonist Guy Montague’s emotions as he runs wild, as a fugitive, chased by sophisticated government machinery, both political and technological, unable to escape being crushed under the weighty wheels of inexorable circumstances.

On investigation, I found out that Charles Dickens had used the term ‘juggernaut’, much earlier, in ‘The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit’ published in 1844.

And so did Robert Louis Stevenson in ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. And even H G Wells, and H W Longfellow.

But ‘juggernaut’ is one simple example, from thousands of Indian words and phrases which enrich English literature.

In 2015, Shashi Tharoor the Indian politician had jokingly said in a debate at Oxford University that, during their rule of India, the British had looted many things, including the word ‘loot’.

And he is right. Hindi words like ‘loot, jungle, bazaar, bungalow, Tiffin, verandah, shampoo, chutney and gym’ are all commonplace in English now.

For etymology lovers, here’s another interesting piece of information I found on a BBC website about ‘Hobson-Jobson’, a dictionary compiled by Colonel Henry Yule and AC Burnell.

The dictionary’s subtitle is: "A glossary of colloquial Anglo-Indian words and phrases, and of kindred terms etymological, historical, geographical and discursive”.

In their work, which consists of over 2000 Anglo-Indian entries, the authors write about a copper coin. In ancient India, the coin was called a ‘dumree’. And it was common, long before British Raj time, for people in India to say: 'No, I won't give a dumree!', referring to something of insignificant value.

On English tongues, apparently, ‘damree’ became ‘dam’, and was soon spelt as an already existing English word ‘damn’!

‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn’. When Rhett Butler says this to Scarlett O'Hara, in the movie ‘Gone with the wind’, he probably has no knowledge about the ‘dumree’ or about the phrase’s Indian connection.

Oh, Blighty! This informal English exclamation also has an Indian connection!

A ‘wilaa-yati’ or ‘bilaa-yati’ in Hindi and Urdu means ‘a foreigner’. When Indian soldiers of the First World War referred to their British counterparts in this way, the Britons found it a ‘cushy’ term to use. Yes. ‘cushy’ too, is derived from the Hindi word ‘kushi’ for happiness.

Pyjamas, dungarees, and bandanas in clothing; thugs, dacoits and loots in crime; curry, tandoori and chutney in food; avatar, karma and nirvana in religion; pundit, guru and mantra in education…

There is no stopping the juggernaut wheels of Indian words romping onto the English language.

After all, in 2017 alone, Oxford Dictionary has added 900 new words, and 70 of them were Indian.

TKS SPARKLERS GAVEL CLUB TKS Sparklers gavel club was founded in the year 2013 by DTM Giridhar as sponsor and TM Sushmita as mentor . This was done keeping in mind the necessity to train young minds to become eloquent speakers and efficient leaders . The TKS Sparklers gavel club, last 5 years has seen many gaveliers who have groomed themselves under the able leadership of counsellor TM Sushmita and TM Vandana.

Here gaveliers are taught to be collaborative thinkers with independent minds. The basic protocols to run a club and conduct a meeting is managed extremely well, between the age groups from 10 to 18 years.The cohesive behavior among the gaveliers to learn unlearn and relearn has been observed which reflects the apt environment that has been created in TKS SGC. Every year from 2014 we had gaveliers participating in the GMAC winning laurels for themselves and the club. To name some of the gaveliers who had their proud moments in speech contests are Gav Ayushmathy , Gav Shobit , Gav Sriram , Gav Sridhar , Gav Roshini, Gav Anusha , Gav Rishita , Gav Abhiram , Gav Tanvi to name a few .

The club has been performing within limited financial resources as we work as nonprofit organization. We had magnanimous sponsors who have time and again, been donating for the club success for conducting various events. Here we should bring to light the major sponsor for us have been TM Srinivas Reddy . We had a team of toastmasters helping us always in conducting events for us , they are TM Prasad , TM Jagadeesh , TM AV Rao, TM Giridhar, TM VMNR Sharma , to name some .

With the hope that the TKS SGC reaches its’ zenith and blossoms every year with high quality gaveliers,this is TM Sushmita the present counsellor wishing all , ‘The very Best” in their endeavors. I joined in TKS toastmasters club in the year 2011.

I have completed my CC and CL. Also I have carried out different leadership roles as VP Membership two times, VP Education and President in TKS toastmasters club. It was truly a great learning experience to improve my communication skills as well as leadership skills. I can say that it is the best platform to improve soft skills. It’s been almost a year now that I moved from Bahrain to Dubai & I am glad to share with all of you that me and my family are almost well accustomed now to vibrant GCC country UAE. It goes without saying that its just a physical movement from Bahrain to Dubai, but I am well connected with all of you and club activities in many communication forums which makes me feel that we all are still virtually well connected, and I am still enjoying the motivation and learning from TKS toastmaster club activities.

I am elated to share with you that my journey of toastmasters is still on and will be active despite of this geographical change. Through this newsletter I would like to share with you my experience from this new smart city Dubai.

As you all know we can’t be away from public speaking and in specific toastmaster activities once we are used to it that’s the beauty and DNA of any committed toastmaster and that’s what is our strength and weakness. Currently I am a member of two clubs.

Dubai Internet City Advanced Toastmasters Club Its pleasure to share with you all that I am currently mentoring a new club that is to be chartered very soon a toastmaster corporate club for international center for culinary arts Dubai. Expected name of club is Keynoters toastmasters club.

Toastmasters clubs and activities are very vibrant in Dubai and I feel ecstatic to meet great leaders here in Dubai. Mid of October in one of our club meetings I am about to have an opportunity to meet 2018 world champion of public speaking Ramona j Smith. Though I miss my home club which is a great community of leaders and I feel proud today to say that “yes I am a leader & I was made by TKS toastmaster club.”.

Honorable president TM Raman and team are doing a great job in all aspects related to club activities with great support from all members, specially I am happy to notice the recent improvement related to club amenities which are dreams from long time. TM Raman and team made our dreams come true and their commitment is much appreciated. My special congratulations to our Immediate Past President and current Area Director TM VMNR Sharma for his esteemed guidance and leadership to our club in his district officer role of Area director.

Toastmasters makes you shiver?

If your answer is yes, read my personal journey with toastmasters.

I would proudly say that I was an introvert before joining the TKS Toastmasters. But now that's all past, joining toastmaster changed the way I was, calm, introvert, afraid to talk to anyone and my hands shivered when I went to any group of people or when stood on the stage. On the first day when I attended the Toastmasters meeting, I remember how terrified I was when I was supposed to give just my introduction. When the VPM called me to take the stage; I couldn’t utter even my name properly. I just wanted to run away from the meeting at that moment. But I have a policy; never give up anything in the middle.

To move on, I started my journey with a well-practiced Ice Breaker speech. After 2 minutes of speech delivery due to my risen stress and anxiety levels, my mouth dried up. My words fumbled.

Somehow I finished my speech on that day. I thought, it is due to my nervous feeling. But, same thing continued even in further speeches. As a remedy, I used to take small sips of water, during the speech time, but as it distract the audience from your speech, I omitted it. So I chose another remedy using a lip balm that moisture the lips or by having a piece of bubble gum / candy to produce the saliva in the mouth. By using these remedies, I started completing the speeches.

If you join toastmasters you are forced to talk, fellow toastmaster supports and motivates you and as the time passes you will starting gaining confidence .I Always believe the famous quote from Alexander the Great “There is nothing impossible to him who will try” To my surprise, my recent speeches, I could feel the change. Without using above remedial measures; I was able to finish my speeches without any hiccups with gained confidence.

Toastmasters is a great change agent, It is the platform which helps anyone, be it an introvert or extrovert. I have seen many extrovert people who can’t deliver a speech properly. They get scared and their hands shiver a lot. So here, the toastmasters help a lot. Even now my hands shiver but only due to cold.

Dear Fellow Toastmasters , Participation in Toastmasters Movement itself is a life changing exercise which shapes one's personality and career. It brings all positivism in every aspect of life i.e., thoughts and how to achieve the goals in life. But I wonder very few practice this positive outlook in daily life when it comes to respecting others thoughts , religion , language , region , caste etc., and at least the punctuality which is the easiest aspect to implement. My advise to all is try to practice not just in toastmaster sessions but in real life and be a model for others which I believe is the real goal of Toastmaster movement rather than just acquiring titles.
